FOOT NOTES Making Connections was an initiative of the Annie E. Casey Foundation created to support work that demonstrates the premise that kids thrive when their families are strong and their communities supportive. The initiative commenced in 1999 as a demonstration project in selected neighborhoods in 22 cities across the urban United States. The Annie E. Casey Foundation works to build better futures for disadvantaged children and their families in the United States. Its primary mission is to foster public policies, human service reforms and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of today’s vulnerable children and families. Contracts for consultancy between Gabriel Q. Velasquez and the Annie E. Casey Foundation were executed on behalf of the Metaform Collaborative, a subsidiary of OBDC, Inc. Areas of Capacity Building Include: Result 4 – Families and Neighborhoods Have Strong Informal Support And Networks Result 7 – Families and Children Live in Safe and Attractive Neighborhoods Westside Attractive Communities Coalition: In partnership with the City of San Antonio Department of Neighborhood Action, the Westside Attractive Communities Coalition was an assignment contracted through a grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation for capacity building and leadership development. The WACC was comprised of more than 30 community organizations, some informal social networks, including Avenida Guadalupe Association, Storm Neighborhood Association, Our Lady of the Lake Gardens, Westend Neighborhood Association, Memorial Heights Neighborhood Association, the Westlawn NA, and informal groups such as Los Jardines, and the St. Agnes Beautification Project. Capacity building included creation of neighborhood associations and guidance for general community maintenance, such as City of San Antonio Neighborhood Sweeps, Super Sweeps, San Antonio Fighting Back - Weed & Seed crime prevention partnerships, and the creation and promotion of community National Night Out activities. Target result was to increase the knowledge and neighborhood capacity required for the creation and maintenance of “Attractive Neighborhoods” measured by cluster mapping techniques, quantification of participation (Social Networks: Family-Friendly Places) based on January 2003 Census baseline data, as defined by residents.
