The week of 29 September to 6 October 2013 has been set aside as Older Persons Week in South Africa.
During this special week, all South Africans are encouraged to do something distinctive for our senior citizens in recognition of their contribution to society, and to address issues that affect them which in line with the provisions of the Older Persons Act of 2006.
Older Persons Week, which is now celebrated annually, comes against the backdrop of an increase in the number of reported cases of elderly women being raped.
Older persons enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Constitution particularly the right to have their dignity respected.
Older men and women enjoy the same rights as anyone else in South Africa.
Government continues to prioritise the provision of basic needs of older persons.
Government will continue to work with communities and ensure the enforcement of laws to protect older persons from criminality.
