GPRC CONNECT CHAMBER REPORT
Sarah Parry, GPRC CEO
INDIGENOUS BUSINESS COMMITTEE The Indigenous Business Committee was established as a Standing Committee of the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber of Commerce. Its primary purpose is to establish a framework for building effective and positive relationships, assisting with the introductions of private sector projects in a way that meets businesses’ competitive priorities, while respecting the rights, cultures, and aspirations of Indigenous peoples. The committee is working on building collaborative and improved communications, while improving the economic benefit to all.
SHOP LOCAL COMMITTEE The Shop Local Committee was struck in early 2020, with a mandate to serve as a supportive resource for business people who wish to learn, grow, create, and attract a stronger business community and a more robust and sustainable economic region. The committee is composed of two Chamber employee co-Chairs and 5-7 local business owners. The committee meets monthly. A cross-section of Chamber members who are business owners can keep the Chamber informed of relevant issues, concerns, and suggestions. The Chamber will also use the committee member businesses to help create plans for Shop Local campaigns and initiatives. The core of the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber is made up of the local businesses in our region, and part of the Chamber’s strategic plan is to support those businesses through Shop Local campaigns and initiatives. The Chamber recognizes that small business owners know what works best for them and what they need, and the Chamber wants a cross-section of businesses to tell us what types of assistance and services would support them the best.

2021 WOMEN OF INFLUENCE
AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Our Chamber Ambassador Program has created an army of “Chamber Champions”. The Greater Parkland Regional Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are a highly visible and influential group of volunteers who give their time to provide a crucial link between the Chamber, its members, and the community. Our GPRC Ambassadors demonstrate a passion for the Chamber and for supporting business. Acting as hosts and mentors, our ambassadors warmly welcome new businesses to the Chamber with a visit to their business to raise awareness of Chamber activities and benefits, informing and involving new Chamber members to promote strong comradery, and assisting in making members feel welcome and integrated into our chamber.
EMERGING LEADERS The Emerging Leaders Group (ELG) is being formed and will launch in 2021 to provide a forum that engages professionals in the early part of their careers, through connections, collaboration and learning opportunities that enhance and support the region’s business community. As a century-old organization, the Chambers understands that we have to remain relevant and the ELG’s mandate will be to harness the talents of young professionals and entrepreneurs in our region. Their focus will be on developing a pathway for young leaders and entrepreneurs to become engaged with the Chamber’s committees, program activities with the aim of developing new leaders in the years and decades ahead, and to help grow the region’s economy by ensuring that we have new business leaders well-prepared to lead the chamber into the future.
WOMEN OF INFLUENCE New for 2021, the Chamber is highlighting five of our region’s most exceptional women. We are honouring accomplishments, validating hard work, and contributions to the workplace. Throughout the year, we will be celebrating women who have made a significant impact historically and today. The GPRC Women of Influence launched on March 8, 2021, which is International Women’s Day. The Greater Parkland Regional Chamber recognizes that diversity is good for business, that organizations greatly benefit from having a diverse leadership team throughout the organizational structure, and that women in business play a critical role in breaking ground in the land of opportunities.

020 PROVED TO BE a year of extreme challenge for our business community. This past year, our Advocacy focus has been on responding to the ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions and programs, supporting our members through this difficult season, and streamlining and prioritizing information regarding financial supports and changes to work environments and human resource needs. Through weekly meetings with the Alberta Chambers of Commerce, we were able to clarify and organize information on COVID-19 supports, strategize best responses to challenges faced by businesses across Alberta, and provide much-needed, timely survey results to our municipal and provincial leaders regarding impacts to business, in real time. Our Committee and our Chamber continue to voice our deep concerns to the provincial government regarding the negative impacts which COVID-19 restrictions, even with recent easing, continue to have on our business community. Our Chamber issued 2 letters to Premier Kenney and our local politicians urging the government to give back responsibility and ownership to our businesses to safely operate within established guidelines. Also, in 2020, our Committee has successfully assisted many local businesses with barriers to growth, and have achieved positive outcomes for these local businesses, taking their concerns, in some cases, to the federal level for successful results. Additionally, our Committee, in concert with the Alberta and Canadian Chamber’s of Commerce, debated and passed policies of importance to businesses across Alberta and Canada, for ongoing advocacy at the provincial and federal levels for this next year. For 2021, we have several issues our Advocacy Committee is focused on: policy development on SR+ED credits, broadband/ fibreoptics/rural internet connectivity, increasing our participation with municipal economic development, streamlining business licenses for the tri-municipal area, and of course we continue to push hard for a return to fully re-opening the economy in a safe and responsible manner. Spring is a time of renewal, and we look forward to a strong rejuvenation of businesses in our region in 2021.

DARCY TORHJELM UR FIRST YEAR AS the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber of Commerce has been one of many firsts and plenty of foundational work. The Governance of the GPRC can sometimes be very dry and something that seems to be so unimportant and redundant. But it really is very exciting and very important to the groundwork of establishing the future of the GPRC and setting an important part of the future of our organization. Working on our by-laws was a big challenge as we were working with the Board of Trade Act and that proved to be very limiting in what we were able to do to establish our Chamber. However, we were able to get through that and have put together a set of by-law’s that I am certain will be an asset for the Chamber moving forward. Additionally, establishing Terms of Reference for our Committees and working with the Board of Directors in setting the proper direction and guidance for our Governance was important work. It was a great experience, working with Dan Duckering, Brieanne MacLeod, Matt Schellenberger, Sarah Parry and Richard Wong, thank you for your input and knowledge.

L A N D I S VA N T H U Y N E S A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber of Commerce (GPRC) is responsible for ensuring its funds are used appropriately to provide services supporting our members. As a Director & Treasurer of the GPRC, I also have a vested interest as a Chamber member and in the communities that make up this great region. As an organization of businesses, we are here to further our collective interests and to advocate on the behalf of our community’s economic prosperity and business interests. As Treasurer I have focus on the ‘financial well-being and a continuous health check’ of the organization, very similar to my own business. It is vital that our Directors and operational staff understand their financial responsibilities. I have spent considerable time developing my own financial management and I take great pride in working with our operational team to continue to develop a robust financial structure to ensure sound fiscal management and good governance. My responsibilities include understanding the financial structure of the organization so that I am aware of all the sources of our income and expense, reviewing and discussing the organizational budget; working with management to review all financial reporting to ensure that as a Board of Directors there is understanding and trust with all aspects of financial management and ensuring that we have a recognized procedure for remedial action where action is required. The Chamber’s revenue typically comes from a couple of main streams; membership investments (fees) and revenues generated through events. These revenue streams are very typical for chambers across the country and serves to keep the annual membership fees low and membership value high. Members typically join to support the advocacy/lobbying work we do, the marketing and promotion we can provide, and the education and professional development opportunities we offer. Whatever your reason for joining the Chamber, we truly appreciate your support.

HE MEMBERSHIP & RETENTION Committee has worked hard over the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber’s inaugural year, all in support of our nearly 900 businesses. The committee’s primary goal is to work with the operations team to increase our number and representation of sector businesses across the region, while enhancing member service & value to current members. In leadership of these efforts, the committee in 2020 established a 3-year strategic vision and plan, including member goals and satisfaction metrics. This was combined with the launch of several programs, including the Ambassador Program, the Women of Influence Program and the soon to be launched Emerging Leaders Group. As we move further into 2021, we look forward to continuing to engage our members from across the region in various programs, initiatives and hopefully (eventually) in-person events. I would like to thank the entire Committee for their dedication, as well as the operations staff, most directly Sarah and Jodie, for all their hard work.

We’re fully integrated,” says ACC President & CEO Ken Kobly. “From High Level in the north to Raymond in the south, Jasper in the west to Lloydminster in the east.” With the support of its membership, the ACC provides a powerful voice that speaks out on issues like taxation, transportation, and education. Participation by more than 80 corporate members provides additional support for efforts at all levels. The ACC operates as a grassroots organization, with all policies set by the community chambers. Weekly meetings are held to discuss what’s happening in communities, to identify pinch points, and determine how the ACC should use its influence to encourage government bodies to support local businesses better. Community chambers and their member businesses are provided with support, staff and volunteer training, educational services, and discounts on merchant fees. To better understand what community chambers need, the ACC has adopted the Alberta Perspectives platform. It was the second provincial chamber to do so, following in BC’s footsteps. The platform conducts nationwide surveys of chamber member businesses, then rapidly returns survey results to share information and a true national perspective. In July 2020, benchmark surveys were conducted to get opinions about the effects of low oil prices and COVID-19 on business confidence. A survey of labour and market issues is forthcoming. Hot button surveys are also conducted, on issues like confidence in government and vaccine rollouts. In the past year, the ACC has made it a priority to ensure businesses are getting timely and relevant information about the possibility of reopenings amid COVID-19 related restrictions. Opinions are collected and parsed with postal codes, enabling the ACC to gauge moods and impressions down to the neighbourhood level in Parkland County, and get localized rapid input on policies. In a normal year, the Alberta Chambers of Commerce meets face-to-face with MLAs, cabinet ministers, and deputy ministers on behalf of the Chambers membership. It also proactively creates those opportunities by hosting four annual events: the Alberta Business Awards celebrating excellence in business, the Political Action Day and MLA Dinner, the Fall Board Meeting, and the Deputy Ministers Dinner.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) is a phrase that broadly outlines the efforts an institution takes to create a more welcoming environment for people of less-privileged identities.

propriate language, equal pay scales, fair policies and flexibility in race, gender and religion are all a great start. Attending a session or two in the upcoming webinar is another.
Q: Who will this affect? A: Being a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive business affects us all. Beginning with business owners, who see visible results with increased number of customers, and happier employees. Employees who feel more comfortable about taking mental health days, and sharing their visions, ideas, and goals, create a more creative workplace. Customers feel more welcome coming into a business that is able to accommodate them through awareness of language and accurate vocabulary. The community naturally becomes more supportive, stronger, and all who live, work, and play in the region reap the benefits of the inclusivity.
Q: How does a business that’s DE&I benefit me? A: Statistics show that a business that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive has less employee turnover, and employees who are better problem solvers, make faster decisions, and are more passionate about their jobs.
Q: When is the webinar? A: The DE&I webinar starts March 18th — but don’t worry if you miss it. Each webinar has a specific topic, so you can register for one, a few, or all of them as you are able. These webinars are a taste of some of the things your business can do to get started in being more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. For more information or to register, go to the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber’s website at www.gprchamber.ca, click Events and then click Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
Q: Why do this now? A: As we begin recovery from the COV D-19 pandemic, businesses that are struggling are finding creative ways to keep their doors open. Laid-off workers are looking for new opportunities and many of them bring diverse backgrounds with them. As restrictions ease and we move toward “getting back to normal”, business will increase and owners will be better prepared to welcome both new and experienced employees, and more diverse customers.

SARAH BEFUS
THE FASHIONISTA
When Sarah Befus took the leap into entrepreneurship, she went feet first. Most people have experienced the downsides of new or ill-fitting shoes, which multiply during events where you might be wearing them all day, and on your feet for most of it. Whether you’re running a marathon, or doing a marathon of sightseeing, comfort counts. If you’re wearing high heels, pain is almost guaranteed. For Befus, that was an inspiration. Having stepped away from her career to start a family, she decided to pursue new opportunities from home. Ideas for businesses came steadily. “My dad taught me to write my ideas down. And, to pay attention to the ones that keep recurring in your heart and your mind.” The pain of wearing high heels at social functions was one of those things that had stayed with her. Heels are about fashion before function. And they’re fun to wear and they look great, so at weddings and parties and nights out on the town, women suffer through. There was a time when Kiely MacLean didn’t know anything about robotics. She was fresh from finishing her business degree at Acadia University, and living in France. Around the same time, her father was working for an oilfield services company, and had been exploring ways to use robotics to clean the inside of oil tanks. A colleague with a passion for new technology took an interest. MacLean moved to Alberta to develop the idea and a year later, the three partners established RJ Maclean tank services. When they launched, the price of oil was low. It took years to get traction, but eventually their high tech approach proved to be their advantage. “When you go from a startup to competing with much larger competitors, you have to be innovative. You have to do things differently. Traditionally, the inside of massive crude oil tanks — the kind you might pass as you drive down a highway — are cleaned by people, sometimes working on their hands and knees. The large oil producers were looking at how they could do things differently, so it was an ideal time to be innovating. The trio created robots that would go into the tanks first, to clean up as much as possible. People would follow, to finish the job.

DR. SARAH MALENCHAK
THE VETERINARIAN
When Dr. Sarah Malenchak started her business in 2011, she visited most of her patients at home, on farms across the greater Parkland County. They were house calls — for horses. If you live east of Edmonton and keep horses, there’s a good chance you’ve already met Malenchak. Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is the only equine services provider in the area. In 2016, she built a permanent home for Westhills, 10 minutes west of Stony Plain. In the beginning, there was a main clinic, a lab, and a couple of stalls for intensive cases. Today, the hospital offers 24/7 hospitalization, in addition to regular visits and checkups. There’s an office, a heated arena, covered outdoor stalls with attached runs, daytime turnout pens, a heated barn with monitored foaling stalls, and a laboratory area with semen storage. In-house lab facilities include CBC and blood chemistry analysis, automated fecal parasite analysis, and more.
Instead of travelling to see patients, people started bringing the horses to her, from an hour in every direction. Sometimes from Northern BC. For the level of care Westhills provides, people are willing to make the drive. Malenchak is busy year-round, offering preventative medicine, vaccines, and health checkups. Addressing lameness issues and performance issues keeps the horses running the way they should be. After hours, there can be emergencies. In the summer, babies are born. Westhills’ advanced reproduction services — artificial insemination and embryo transfers — are in high demand. Malenchak describes the community as very supportive and welcoming. She tries to give back through sponsorships, 4H clubs, and equine associations and programs.
A former hockey player, Malenchak emphasizes the importance of building a strong team to make a business thrive. Her first hires were summer vet students. The first two — Dr. Emily Graham and Dr. Brandy Rimmer — stayed on at Westhills after graduating. They were joined in 2020 by Dr. Alyssa Coulombe, bringing the total equine vets on staff to four. “Looking back, when someone told me I had to start a business to practice in the area, it was overwhelming. I believe that the staff that I have and the people who have come into my life have made it possible.”
“A FORMER HOCKEY PLAYER, MALENCHAK EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDING A STRONG TEAM TO MAKE A BUSINESS THRIVE.”

More recently, she took on an apprentice named Jaidyn — a fourth year cabinet making student from NAIT. “I’m always encouraging women to stay in this industry. When I first started, there were none. As far as I know, outside of husband and wife teams, I’m the only woman owner in Western Canada.” Carmichael doesn’t have her journeyman certificate or Red Seal, but NAIT has given her special permission to apprentice people. “That’s what drives me really. Not wanting anyone to go the route I had to, to learn and figure things out. One day she may go do her own thing — and that would make me proud.” In 2020, Carmichael started The Storm Bison business collective — a support group for entrepreneurs and business owners struggling through the pandemic. “Let’s be strong. Let’s be bison,” she told them. They listened and, one year later, the collective has become a general contracting business.

DR. MEL ANIE T. CURRIE
THE DOCTOR
What’s the best part about delivering babies for a living? “Seeing them grow up,” says Dr. Melanie T. Currie. Currie herself grew up just outside of Edmonton on an acreage in Namao. At the U of A, she started in Nursing, switched to Science, and then applied for Medicine. She graduated in 1996 and completed her Family Medicine residency at the U of A. After three years in Lac La Biche, she moved her family to Spruce Grove in 2001 and started practicing at the Westgrove Clinic. In 2004, Currie became an owner of Westgrove Clinic. A big decision that put her hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt at 36 years old. On the subject of risk-taking, she’s an optimist. “Have in your head that it might turn out. If it does, that’s amazing, and if it doesn’t... hopefully you aren’t too old to try again.” Everything worked out. In 2007, the clinic moved into its current location at Queen Street Place. Today, there are 8 owners and 14 doctors total — 10 of them women. When she started working towards being a doctor, there were more men applying to medical schools. That’s changed for fam-

ily medicine, Currie says, and thinks the flexible schedule of family medicine is a big draw. “The best part about being a doctor is that you can take on as much or as little work as you want. Many of us are mothers too, and our kids matter to us. You only have so much time. When your kids are getting older, if you haven’t already been doing leadership stuff you don’t have a chance.” She credits her early mentors with giving her those opportunities to take the lead. It’s a style of mentorship she hopes everyone is able to find, and something she provides. Westgrove Clinic is a residency teaching site for the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Family Medicine, where she herself trained. Some of the current doctors at Westgrove stayed on after completing their residencies. Two decades into her medical practice, Currie works four days a week, delivering babies and doing palliative care. When she started at Westgrove, there wasn’t anyone doing good palliative care.
“They were looking for someone who was willing to do home visits. I worked with the site director to make that happen at Westgrove.” She continues to do maternity care because kids make good patients, but notes that anxiety and mental health needs are on the rise in today’s youth. For that, she offers some expert medical advice. “Exercise is better than any pill I can give them. More than two hours of screen time per day is going to give your kid anxiety.”
“HAVE IN YOUR HEAD THAT IT MIGHT TURN OUT. IF IT DOES, THAT’S AMAZING, AND IF IT DOESN’T …TRY AGAIN.”

Parkland County
REIMAGINED Parkland County is reimagining its economic future, and how it will achieve the goal of offering high-quality services, promoting investment and job creation, while embracing emerging trends and strengthening local communities. Under the direction of Council, the County established a comprehensive marketing and investment attraction campaign based on our strengths and a strategy for sharing this information with the world. Local businesses understand the value of locating in the County, however many decision-makers located outside of the greater Edmonton region are unaware of the advantages Parkland has to offer, including the most competitive non-residential tax rates in the region, low provincial corporate tax rates (8%) vs. Ontario 11.5% and British Columbia 12%). Alberta’s combined federal-provincial business tax rate is now lower than that of 44 States in the USA. Research shows this is an important factor for business owners and investors to consider, however it is not the sole motivation for businesses when looking at new locations for expansion or relocation. Of heightened importance to investors are qualities that relate to talent/people and the quality of life those employees can maintain. One of the strengths of the Greater Parkland and Edmonton Region is its access to well-trained, educated individuals who can live a high-quality life with the many amenities located within the region. The County’s four main investment attraction sectors are transportation/logistics, warehousing, IT/Data Centres and agriculture/ agribusiness developments. These sectors have been identified as a competitive strength and differentiator by the experts working with our team. With access to a skilled workforce, low tax rates and affordable land/building costs, this presents a great opportunity for investors seeking new development opportunities or businesses looking at expansion/relocation.
Other areas of focus for the County include building complete communities that offer opportunities to work and play as well as a tourism attraction strategy built to facilitate and promoted product and destination development. New logistics and business parks will provide the County with future development that can focus and take advantage of renewable, greenspace-oriented, work-from-home, e-commerce style complete community development trends. The Wabamun Lake area provides a unique development opportunity for the County and the central Alberta region as a whole. Natural habitat attraction, rolling landscapes, and the work-life-play possibilities in the relative proximity to the metropolitan region are amazing. The County’s Economic Development team will work on developing and analyzing future opportunities with a focus on a further diversified economic base. The County has seen a great deal of activity in the past eighteen months despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of the Acheson area has continued to be an attractive and diversified place for employment and development. The County has been actively engaging with the development community and local businesses to determine how to best support their efforts in attracting new businesses to the community. We are excited about the work the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber is doing in promoting a competitive and investment attractive region to support Parkland County into the new, post-COVID environment in a strong position. At any time, contact our Economic Diversification team at opportunities@parklandcounty.com to discuss how we can make your ideas and plans for a strong and vibrant economic environment a reality.

SPRUCE GROVE METRO BALLPARK INSIDE BASEBALL How the Edmonton Prospects are bringing baseball to Spruce Grove.
B
ASEBALL ISN’T THE FIRST sport people think about when Alberta is mentioned. But, the Edmonton Prospects are about to change that, with an ambitious construction project and the latest chapter in the long history of prairie baseball. The Western Canadian Baseball League dates back to 1948, and though it has undergone many name changes since then, the league has never strayed from its purpose as a showcase for top Canadian college prospects, and as a destination for American college players who need a place to hone their skills in front of welcoming Canadian crowds. Since the mid-1990s, the WCBL has enjoyed a burst of popularity. There are seven teams in Alberta, and several Saskatchewan teams. The Edmonton Prospects were established in 2005. When the Edmonton Capitals ended their residence at RE/MA X Field in the North Saskatchewan River Valley, the Prospects took over the lease. In the six

years that followed, the team’s presence and community involvement has revitalized local enthusiasm for the sport. Attendance has gone up and fan support has swelled. By 2020, the Prospects ownership group saw an opportunity. Their vision was to build a privately funded development in a great location. Patrick Cassidy, team owner and managing partner of the Edmonton Prospects Baseball Club, set his sights on building a facility the team could call home for years to come. A place where they could share baseball culture and the experience of live baseball with a community. And to have as much fun as possible. “It's the importance of human connection and social connection. The importance of gathering with people — that's what baseball is all about,” Cassidy says. This summer, construction crews are breaking ground on the Spruce Grove Metro Ballpark. The state-of-art facility will be a hub for entertainment in Spruce Grove, and a draw
for the Greater Edmonton Metro Region. In addition to Prospects home games, the venue will host a full calendar that includes concerts, festivals, corporate events, kids camps, slo-pitch tournaments, minor league sports, and winter activities. For fans attending games and events, the venue will boast seating options that include more than 2,200 grandstand seats, 200 Founder's Club seats, premium suites for groups, a grass berm viewing area, and a party patio viewing deck. In addition to the ballpark, there will be a community amphitheatre and a microbrewery restaurant that will be open year-round. Pre-sales will be available soon for an adjacent condo development that will offer baseball fans the chance to be in the heart of the action, with 70 to 80 suites total, and half of those facing into the ballpark between left and centre field. Tenants on the other side of the building can enjoy the view from a large common suite that can also be rented out. Future additions to the ballpark complex include commercial frontage, a multi-sport fieldhouse, and an auditorium. JEN COL Construction, a local firm with a strong 43-year history of building in the region, has recently been named as partner
and general contractor for construction of the project. The commercial frontage along Highway 16A is being headed by Victor Moroz with Metro Horizon Developments. By making their home in Spruce Grove, head coach Jordan Blundell hopes baseball players will become role models who inspire local youth to take up the sport, and to enjoy the spirit of baseball fandom. “What our league does is provide a path to college baseball, and a chance for kids to see both local talent, and players from around the world,” says Blundell. If COVID-19 restrictions permit, the Prospects will be playing 28 home games this summer, at local ballparks and other WCBL stadiums. These locations include Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, Edmonton Wally Footz Field, Sylvan Lake, Okotoks, and Lethbridge. For businesses and fans, there are exciting opportunities for marketing, partnerships, and hospitality. Chief among those are naming rights for the ballpark. Naming rights present a major, long-term marketing opportunity for a business that wants to connect their brand with the baseball community, and to enjoy substantial exposure to fans, Spruce Grove residents, and a high volume of passing traffic, year-round. The Prospects group is in talks with several companies for this naming rights opportunity, but have not made a commitment yet, and welcome inquiries from other interested businesses. For companies that want a mix of hospitality and branding presence at the ballpark, there are Premium Activation Partnerships available. These are multi-year commitments that include naming rights to one of the 5 major areas at the ballpark, suites packages, and season seats. Also, a variety of digital and static signage, gameday sponsorships, concourse activations, and much more. Currently, four of the five premium partnership opportunities remain available.
Those looking for the best value should consider Founder's Club Seat Licenses. These are lifetime season seats that include additional perks. Only 200 are available, and the first 50 sold will include extra annual benefits. Year to year season seats are also available. Several Founder's Club seats have already sold and, as the Prospects near construction, buzz and interest continues to mount for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Companies interested in entertaining groups of friends & family, employees, and customers will find what they’re looking for on the Suites level. Sky suites will accommodate groups of 4 to 24 and are available with multi-game, full season, and multi-season commitments. Only a handful will be available for full season or multi-season bookings. A waiting list has been started for these suite options. The Inaugural Home Game Package includes a seat at the first Prospects game at the new ballpark. It includes a ticket, a hat, and a golf shirt. Plus, your name will be etched in a planned monument that commemorates opening day.
For information about the ballpark or the opportunities listed above, contact Keaton at 780-940-4854 or Ryan at 780-717-6739. Find the Edmonton Prospects online at sprucegrovemetroballpark.com

WE AR E CO-OP WE ARE CO-OP. Three simple words that sum-up a different kind of business. A co-operative. A business owned by its members, ordinary everyday people that choose to be a part of something bigger. A business founded on co-operation, shared-ownership and community. A business governed by a locally-elected Board of Directors. Three simple words. We are Co-op. Whether you’re a member, an employee, on the Board of Directors or the CEO, you are an equal shareholder in North Central Co-op. You’re a part-owner of their Association, which means you have a seat at their table, a vote in their business and the opportunity to earn equity and cash-back on your investment. “Co-ops are a different kind of business. We are owned by our members, not faraway shareholders,” explains Dean McKim, Chief Executive Officer of North Central Co-op, adding that “Co-ops are guided by the needs of our members, customers and communities.” Co-ops have a reputation for being locally-invested and supporting local causes that

WHEN BUSINESS IS GOOD
How one entrepreneur turned a good deed into a thriving business. A decade ago, when a friend was struggling to remedy a painful skin condition, Terry Caron thought an all-natural solution would be worth exploring. Between nursing shifts with the WestView Primary Care Network, Terry’s research led her to a recipe with potential. She started with the recommended natural

ingredients, and then tweaked the recipe with her own selection of herbs. The salve worked. So well, that Terry brought a few jars to work to share with her coworkers who suffered from dry, cracked hands. Again, the salve got great reviews.. Recognizing an opportunity to help even more people, Terry booked space at a local farmer’s market, and set up shop with just six jars of her Healing Salve. She sold out, returned the next week with twelve more jars, and sold out again. Terry started wondering what else she could make, and started experimenting with new recipes. Spring Lake Naturals was born. In the years that followed, Terry’s time at the farmers markets grew a loyal clientele for her creations. In 2018, she opened her own shop on Main Street in Stony Plain. It’s a community where she has deep roots, having lived there since she was 13 years old. “I love creating things. And even when I have a bad day, I turn the key to my store and it just smells so good. It’s a zen place, where people come in just to chat.” Through all of the early success and g rowth, Terr y continued nursing. To keep up w ith her busy schedule, she hired t wo employees — Denise Fortowsky and
Raven K ing — to help her run the shop, make products, and manage her social media presence. Today, the Spring Lake Naturals product line is diverse and growing, with products like loofah body bars, relax wax melts, men’s beard oil, shaving bars, and shampoo & conditioner bars. Branded versions of products are supplied to other local businesses like massage therapists. You can find Spring Lake Naturals products in the hotel and store at the David Thompson Resort west of Nordegg. Terry has her sights set on wholesale opportunities out of province, both east and west. And business isn’t just good, it’s still about doing good. Organic and natural ingredients are still a must, and the team is mindful of the waste that retail products can generate. They favour products that use less plastic and no bottles, and offer things in bar-form or refillable containers whenever possible. It’s those good intentions that Terry attributes having some of the same customers for over a decade now. “They know that I take pride in my products, that I use good quality ingredients, and that I would never compromise.”

KEEPING COMMUNITIES VIBRANT WITH SENIORS HOUSING.
While most locals are familiar with the sight of Meridian Housing Foundation’s eight properties, fewer are familiar with what happens inside, who lives there, and how the foundation has been enriching communities for over six decades. The foundation was established in 1960, as a partnership between municipalities. Their shared goal was to provide affordable local housing to seniors 65 and over, where they could grow older in their communities. Today, 260 seniors live at Meridian’s residences, with an average age of 87. The foundation operates as a registered charity, with the City of Spruce Grove, the Town of Stony Plain, and Parkland County as its contributing municipalities. The foundation’s residences exist to address the less talked about realities of growing older — the social pitfalls and financial barriers many seniors face while transitioning from their careers and home lives, to appropriate, affordable housing. Seniors are valued and valuable members of any community. The residences strive to maximize each senior’s independence and autonomy, acknowledge their individuality, and ensure they feel respected. In short, Meridian does everything it can to make seniors feel at home. Reflecting that independence, there are
four housing options that cater to seniors’ different wants and needs: Lodge, Independent Lodge, Affordable Housing, and Seniors Self Contained. Lodges include three daily meals, three snacks, light housekeeping, activities and programs, emergency pendants, night checks, and utilities. Independent Lodges are similar, but with just the lunch-time meal provided. Affordable Housing offers simple apartment living with parking, at rents at least 10% below market value. All of the buildings are safe, clean, well-maintained, modern, and secure. Senior Self Contained units are independent living seniors’ apartment buildings with subsidized rents. Residents pay 30% of their income as rent. The most important amenity in each Meridian residence is the people. Living adjacent to other seniors provides a constant source of social interaction that boosts mental and physical health, and prevents feelings of loneliness and isolation.
As members of a community within the greater community, residents also enjoy access to a full range of services, and recreational and volunteer opportunities if they’re interested. Resident satisfaction is high, as is demand for the quality of local housing Meridian provides. The builds are at full capacity and, at the time of publication, there were nearly 200 seniors on waiting lists. Building new facilities to shorten those waiting lists is an ongoing priority for Meridian. Construction is currently underway for a new seniors residence in Stony Plain, along with a 1.5M capital campaign to fund the project. When it’s completed, Folkstone Manor will be a 4-storey building, Meridian’s first 55+ residence, and the first one to offer 2-bedroom units. Each of the 63 suites will feature a stove, fridge, and storage room, as well as a private balcony — all at below-market rents. Other amenities include an elevator, laundry facilities on each floor, a rentable events room, and surface and underground parking, and landscaping. For more information about the project, visit meridianhousingfoundation.ca

Physical Therapy & Massage Therapy
After a successful career as a civil engineer in civic and provincial transportation, Chantal McKenzie took the next natural step: buying a yoga studio and physical therapy business. Like transportation, yoga and physical therapy keep people moving. Phoenix Physical Therapy employs one full-time physical therapist, two more working part-time, plus a massage therapist. There are plans to offer holistic massage therapy and reiki in the near future, and they’re looking for a chiropractor to join the team.

When Chantal bought That Yoga Place in 2017, the studio already had clientele, and physical therapy was being offered in two small rooms in the back. Three years later, the studio was offering 40 yoga classes per week and specializing in hot yoga. Business for both yoga and physical therapy had doubled. And though the temporary business closures that began in early 2020 have interrupted her core business at that location, she took it as an opportunity to reinvent how her two businesses operate together. “There’s a great symbiotic relationship between physical therapy and yoga,” Chantal says. Yoga training focuses on improving physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, while physical therapy focuses on optimizing body function, treating pain, and improving physical movement. When customers visit the renovated and reopened space, they’ll be greeted by new decor, new faces, and new services — in a local mecca for wellness that just keeps getting better.

“I am really proud of what our team has done for our community.” said Adam McArthur, General Manager of Community Futures Captial Region when asked about the Regional Relief Recovery Program (RRRF). “Everyone in our office has gotten their chance to do their bit. And then some. I took one for the team by agreeing to be in this picture.” Community Futures Capital Region has provided loans to over 100 businesses in their region since April of 2020. Business Lending has been the offices primary service for almost 25 years, so when they were tapped to administer the RRRF program, they knew that they could contribute; however, the number of entrepreneurs needing help surprised everyone. “We reviewed more loan applications for more dollars in this year than we would have expected in a 5 years span. It’s exceptional for us, but so has been the impact on many in the business community.” Asked if he was surprised by anything

beyond the scale, Adam responded: “We ended up serving more women-run businesses than ever before and different sectors than our typical clients, including more in ‘creative industries.’ This region has a diverse base of entrepreneurs. It’s great that Community Futures Capital Region can meet so many of them. We are also proud of our YETI program, back again for 2021.”
What is YETI?
YETI is a Young Entrepreneurs Training Initiative where big hairy ideas meet the world… with a little helping hand from Community Futures Capital Region. This “Do It Your Selfie” summer business program for senior high school students, is a locally focused, yet potentially global-reaching, high speed business training initiative with the goal to educate, mentor, train and release the potential of modern teens. We offer the tools, resources and guidance participants need to start a new venture or help turn a low-key “side hustle” into a full-time money-maker over the summer and well into the future!
