Friendship Group Group March Newsletter Editorial
Dear Members, Who’s Zooming Who?
Welcome to the new and hopefully improved friendship newsletter. As many of you have heard, Marlene is entering into a new and exciting phase of her life. Therefore, can no longer be the heart and soul of the group. In spite of this, do not worry, the group will continue to meet and organise activities which will try to target all of your interests.
As already mentioned in the editorial, a core group was formed last month to take over the various roles Marlene use to perform as Group Leader.
In fact, a new committee has been set-up and is already planning a series of exciting activities for the upcoming months.
The core group is composed of the following members: Annemarie Aquilina; Angelo Camilleri Joe Portelli; Carmen Galea; Fr Jesmond Gauci Paul Muscat Loren Cassar
Moreover, if you want to share your thoughts or contribute an article please do not hesitate to submit your submissions to me on the following e-mail email@example.com. Any contribution written in a comprehensible language is accepted.
The scope of this committee is to oversee the activities of the Friendship Group and see that the concerns of all its members are met.
Its first meeting was held some weeks ago. One of its main decisions is to organise an outreach programme. The scope of this activity is to reach out to each member and discuss with him or her what s/he expects from the group. Therefore, I encourage you to fully participate in this exercise.
Secrets can’t hide in science. Medicine has a way of exposing lies. Within the walls of the hospital, the truth is stripped bare. How we keep our secrets, outside the hospital, well, that’s a little different. One thing is certain, whatever it is we’re trying to hide; we’re never ready for that moment when the truth gets naked. That’s the problem with secrets – like misery, they love company. They pile up and up until they take over everything, until you don’t have room for anything else, until you’re so full of secrets you feel like you’re going to burst. The thing people forget is how good it can feel when they finally get secrets free, whether good or bad, at least they’re out in the open, like it or not. And once your secrets are out in the open, you don’t have to hide behind them anymore. The problem with secrets is that even when you think you’re in control, you’re not.

A Lenten Reflection: Voluntary Self-Denial Man is often forgetful of the fact that he is both body and spirit. During the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself to "the mystery of Jesus in the desert," where Christ, led by the spirit to be tempted by the devil, fasted for forty days (Mt 4:1-11). The penitential aspect of the Lenten season is "particularly appropriate" for various spiritual exercises, including voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving. But why is self-denial so important for us? For the simple fact that we do not get closer to God by living as materialists whose lives are spent seeking pleasure, comfort and ease, while our immortal soul, which will live on into eternity, is starved. Second, due to the fact that the flesh is weak, it is easy to fall into sin; therefore the body must be forced to subject itself to the spirit. The flesh must be trained, subdued in order that the intellect and the will are able to rule over it more easily. This Lent, let us go forth into the desert with Christ, where, along with him, we deny ourselves out of love. Let us prove to God we love him above all else. Let us engage in acts of voluntary self-denial, training our body, nourishing our spirit that, in prayer, we may begin to truly see the unfathomable value and riches of giving ourselves entirely over to God.
