LOCATION OF NAPHEGY Naphegy is a hill and neighbourhood which belongs to the 1st District in Budapest , Hungary. It rises south of the center of Krisztinaváros, between Gellérthegy and Tabán. Its boundaries are Hegyalja út, Naphegy utca, Gellérthegy utca and Mészáros utca.
HISTORY OF NAPHEGY Naphegy played a vital role in the time when Buda was freed from Turkish invsasion in 1686. The slopes of the hill were still unbuilt at that time. Most of the buildings on Naphegy today were built between 1910–1939. Naphegy also was one of the most attacked areas during World War II because of Southern Railway Station and the strategical importance of the hill.
NAPHEGY SQUARE (DESIGN SITE) Naphegy Square is a circular-formed center and meeting point of Orvos u. , Fem u., Dezsö u., Tibor u. and Parduc u which are the linear accesses to the square. This square is located between many functions such as residential, educational, cultural functions and shopping , transportation etc. This circular-formed park or square has one main function which is children playground at the center of the park and the outer sides of the place are surrounded by vegetation. User types can be defined as children, parents, passing pedestrians and others who stay longer.
1.UNFRIENDLY AND SHOCKING DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR NAPHEGY SQUARE CONCEPT ‘’FREEDOM OF THE NEW GENERATION’’ The aim of the design is to create an unfriendly shocking design idea for Naphegy Square. As we have designed the site, the experience of the user is our main point to think about. First of all, after entering the park we want our users to have the feeling of being lost and with the red colored concrete path which is barely visible between the vegetation we give the users a clue that the function is going to be following this red path. When the users use these paths there will be two possibilities waiting for them. They find themselves either in a red claustrophobic box which is the playground is located or watching this box from 2 metres above just like people watching animals in the zoos. But this time people will be watching children(new generation) in a huge disturbing box and untill they see the place they will not have any idea what’s happenning about this place.
1.ROAD SYSTEM AND ACCESSES First of all, our goal in this design proposal is to keep the function of the park as it is but to create a totally unfriendly feeling. As we analyzed our site, the linear acceses to the park which are dominating the characteristic of the space were creating a really well welcoming feeling in the park. Since our aim is to design an unfriendly public park, we have decided to break the linearity of the accesses and make the users confused about the directions. Thus, with this porpose we have created accesses and the road system which guiding users to stay outer parts and exit from the park instead of guiding them to find the function inner parts of thepark.
2.PLANTATION We have used vegetation to create a hidden central space which is our main function, playground. Since we wanted the users to feel lost with the accesses and the road system, our porpose to make this function hidden was to increase the shocking effect of the users who are going to find out this shocking place in an unexpected place.
3.COLOR We have used a strong red color only in the place where our only function (playground) is located. We have used red color on the pavement, walls and the playground elements. The paths that are giving us the clue to follow are also red.
4.GEOMETRICAL FORMS As it is mentioned above, Naphegy Square has a welcoming circular form. So we wanted to break that circular form by random geometrical forms with random angles. Finally we had the success that the circular form is not as noticable as it was on the plan view.
5.MATERIALS Our main characterized material is concrete which we emphasize espacially in the playground area. This concrete material is going to be red-colored on the ground and the walls of the playground.
2.FRIENDLY AND INTIMATE DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR NAPHEGY SQUARE CONCEPT The aim of the design is to create a friendly and intimate design for the users of Naphegy Square. First of all as we have observed the site, we have seen the lack of functioning in the park. It had a feeling of being a park mostly for children and parents but in our design proposal we desire to make a multifunctional park design that serves many types of users. So we have taken the advantage of the linear accesses to the park and with this linearity, we have divided the park into 4 parts. These parts are the playground, openair gym, sitting areas and flexible use zone. These four different functions zones are going to serve different types of users and in our design proposal, we would like to create another circular form which is the gathering point of these four functions and different types of users. In this central gathering point, there will be a monumental point-like element which can be directly used by users instead of being an untouchable monument.
PLAN AND ACCESSES As we have mentioned above, linearity of the road system in the park was already friendly so we wanted to keep this linearity with some revisions. We have used the four streets’ directions to create our four functional zones and the central point of the park. Our porpose is to design a park where users can access easily. PLANTATION The existing plantation is going to be protectred and besides some additional plantation will be added to create the separation between the functio zones. GEOMETRICAL FORM As the opposite way of our unfriendly design , we decided to emphasize the circular form as a design approach. The central gathering point of the park is emphasizing the circular form of the park which has a stronger welcoming feeling. MATERIALS As we are creating a friendly space our main materials are going to be wood, concrete and rubber. Rubber material is going to be important espacially fort he openair gym and playground to make the users feel safe.
CONCLUSION In conclusion, a designer can create totally different atmosphers for the users according to his/her approach.
