Mayo Clinic Discovers Protein Doubles Down on Cancer Oct. 5, 2016 ROCHESTER, Minn. — The human cell cycle, the normal process of replication by which cells divide, separate and become two, is also a juncture where many mistakes can happen. Most of those errors are automatically repaired by the safeguards in our DNA. But when that repair system breaks down, cancer can result from the resulting mutations. Now comes the discovery of how part of that protection system works. Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that the protein that regulates the cell cycle — cyclin A2 — does double duty. In addition to its role as an RNA binding protein to coordinate DNA duplication during cell division, researchers have discovered that it also plays a role in establishing the machinery that fixes cancercausing DNA replication errors. The researchers’ article, which appears in the latest issue of Science, identifies cyclin A2 is a first example of a protein that binds to RNA to control the production of a single protein, Mre11, a key DNA repair protein. “Cyclins constitute a family of proteins that all living organisms possess to orchestrate ordered progression through the cell division cycle,” explains Jan van Deursen, Ph.D., senior author of the study. “Most family members were discovered 25-30 years ago and thought to uniquely function in the sequential activation of specific cyclin-dependent kinases at different stages of the cell cycle clock. Disruption or deregulation of the cell cycle is a common cause in the development of cancer, so researchers have been interested in understanding this process in the greatest detail in the hope to use this knowledge to develop new medicines to treat human cancers.” Investigation of cyclin A2’s functions in living organisms posed a unique technical hurdle for the team because of the crucial importance of this protein for survival of cells engaging in cell division. The normal approach for this kind of study would involve making genetically altered “knockout” mice with their cyclin A2 removed, so that the effects of this omission could be detected and linked to the protein’s function. But, in this case, because the function of the protein is essential for cell division, none of the mice survived; the “knockout” was lethal. This research, which involved 17 Mayo Clinic researchers from three departments, was supported by three grants from the National Institutes of Health: CA126828, CA168709 and CA166025. About Mayo Clinic Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit organization committed to clinical practice, education and research, providing expert, whole-person care to everyone who needs healing. Japan Airlines Extends Boeing Parts Solutions Agreement 10 Years Sept. 28, 2016 SINGAPORE -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today an agreement with Japan Airlines to extend its partnership with the company to provide spare parts solutions for another 10 years. The renewed Japan Airlines agreement for Boeing’s GoldCare Expendables, formerly Integrated Materials Management (IMM), is an expendable parts service solution that builds on more than a decade of success. The partnership reduces the airline’s operating costs by having Boeing manage a majority of its spare parts inventory, providing items to the airline mechanic as needed. Under the agreement, Boeing will provide the service through 2026. According to Japan Airlines, Boeing’s exceptional customer support and parts solutions were key factors in the decision to extend the contract. “Boeing is pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines, helping to improve operating efficiencies through our parts service,” said Rick Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. “Our focus is on providing our customers what they need, before they know they need it. This approach, along with our world-class customer support, is what continues to make Boeing a preferred parts provider across the globe.” The Japan Airlines order demonstrates the increased flexibility of Boeing’s parts business, which continues to evolve and improve based on customer needs and requirements. In 2015, Boeing increased inventory by 35,000 parts and lowered prices on 24,000 parts. In addition, Boeing has nearly doubled stocked parts for out-of-production airplanes and is offering emergent-build capabilities for customers who need to find parts for out-of-production fleet types. Boeing is a leader in providing 24/7 support and service to the global aviation industry. In addition to its expanded parts business, Boeing offers the industry’s largest portfolio of services, including retrofits and modifications, subscription-based maintenance programs, engineering support, crew training, route planning, digital crew scheduling, advanced data analytics and software to enhance airlines and leasing company operations. About Boeing Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract from US Air Force to Support GPS Modernization Sept. 27, 2016 The U.S. Navy has awarded BAE Systems a $50 million contract option to upgrade four additional Mk 45 Naval Guns on guided missile destroyers (DDG 51s), converting the guns to a fully-digital Mod 4 configuration. The option, exercised under an initial 2015 award, brings the full value of the contract to $130 million for a total of 10 modernized gun systems. Key updates to the Mod 4 configuration include a mechanically strengthened gun mount and a completely digitized control system. The stronger mount allows the gun to achieve 50 percent higher firing energy, and the new digital control system provides significantly more computing power while utilizing a user interface similar to that of a smartphone. These major enhancements enable the seamless integration of targeting and fire control data, such as GPS, positioning the Mk 45 to fire precision guided munitions at unprecedented ranges. “The proliferation of high-volume, low-cost threats is driving the need for multi-mission, cost-effective precision fire from naval guns like the Mk 45,” said Joseph Senftle, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. “As a leader in large-caliber naval guns and precision guided munitions, our team is committed to developing reliable and affordable technology that adapts faster and reaches farther than ever before.” The updated Mk 45 guns are expected to remain in service for decades to come, making the cost-effective Mod 4 conversion and the continued development of advanced munitions — such as the Hyper Velocity Projectile and Standard Guided Projectile — essential components of future surface warfare. Work on the Mk 45 Mod 4 conversions will be performed at the BAE Systems’ facility in Louisville, Kentucky, with support from its facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Delivery of the first upgraded gun will take place in late 2017 with the last delivery scheduled for 2020. BAE Systems has designed, produced, and supported Mk 45 Mods 0-4 for more than 40 years. The Mk 45 is the lightest, most compact 5-inch fully-automatic naval gun in the world and also the most widely deployed, with more than 260 deliveries to the U.S. Navy and 10 international fleets. The company’s Louisville facility houses its Naval Guns Center of Excellence for manufacturing, providing component and spares fabrication, as well as final system assembly and testing of new and modernized gun systems. National Geographic and United Technologies Launch “Urban Expeditions,” a Multimedia Series Exploring Sustainability in Global Cities Sept. 14, 2016 Urban Expeditions will identify cutting-edge research and exploration projects that are leading the way in sustainable urbanization in three key areas:   

Food Buildings Transportation

From architecture to engineering and urban agriculture, the project will shine the light on key sustainability issues and introduce us to change agents from a variety of disciplines doing great work around the globe. “This historic migration of people to cities can be achieved sustainably if we think differently about buildings, food and transportation networks,” said John Mandyck, Chief Sustainability Officer, United Technologies. “Urban Expeditions will showcase the global opportunities for cities to advance more sustainably.” Compelling analysis of these challenges and possible solutions will be featured in a new National Geographic digital storytelling series that takes a deep dive into six global cities, beginning with Austin, Texas, in October 2016. Additionally, the initiative will convene four global stakeholder events, each featuring a crossdisciplinary group of experts and stakeholders, exploring the future of cities and global sustainable urbanization solutions. “National Geographic has a long history of investing in bold people working to better understand the world around us and to develop solutions to our most pressing challenges,” said Brooke Runnette, Chief Program and Impact Officer, National Geographic Society. “The issues around rapid urbanization are only getting more complex, and the Urban Expeditions project allows us to continue to support and explore projects that will be instrumental to solving them.” National Geographic has devoted considerable coverage to the impact of population growth. In 2011, a series called Seven Billion served as an inventory of our times across issues such as demographics, food security, climate change, fertility trends and biodiversity as the world’s population reached seven billion. In 2014, a collection of articles, Feeding Nine Billion, examined how we can provide food for all as the global population expands and climate change impacts agriculture. Urban Expeditions is the next installment. To learn more about UTC and its sustainability initiatives, visit or follow @UTC and @JohnMandyck on Twitter. For more information, visit

Celebrating a 30 Year Business Anniversary! February 23, 2016 - For the past 30 years, InstaKey Security Systems has prided themselves on client-driven best practices to help meet the demand of a changing business landscape. It began in 1986, when the business was formed from the search for a simpler alternative to rekeying a facility after hours. “There just had to be a better way. We knew the day the rekeyable lock technology was invented, that we had something powerful”, recalls Scott Serani, President and CoFounder. Early in the 1990’s, InstaKey Security Systems added additional product lines such as small format interchangeable cores (SFIC) and unique serialized keys to help meet the increased demand for simplicity and cost savings. Significant government contracts and client referrals helped raise awareness about this revolutionary program. As the lock and key technology matured, InstaKey Security Systems didn’t just stop with the hardware, as they felt there was a better way to manage the information. In 2003, their integrated KeyControl® Program was released. This new program would link together the four Key Control cornerstones, setting them apart as a solution provider. Through restricted serialized keys, rekeyable lock cylinders, patented key management software, and a devotion to program administration, a total Program was born. In 2006, the cloud-based management software platform,®, was patented, making “real-time” key tracking and decentralized program administration a reality. Through accessing KeyControl® Program information from anywhere, security management became much simpler to utilize and communicate. In 2014, a KeyControl® Dashboard was next released into the® platform allowing clients transparency and visibility into all of their Program’s requirements. Through a simplistic design on their homepage, visual charts identify exceptions leading to detailed reporting. When asked what makes him most proud of his 30 year tenure, Scott Serani replied, “It’s the relationships with our clients. They are not just clients, but our partners and friends. We know they rely upon us and that we share the same level of commitment and dedication to their security and safety.” Through developing and retaining talent, over 50% of current personnel are tenured with 10+ years. This combined industry knowledge and commitment to their clients provide the most simplistic and cost effective KeyControl® Program. InstaKey Security Systems would like to take this opportunity to express its appreciation to all clients, distributors, vendors, and business partners for their continued support and commitment over the years. It’s the collective efforts of these amazing people that has made simple Key Control possibilities, a reality. What’s next for InstaKey Security Systems? You’ll just have to wait and see! ###
