Golden Oldies Hockey Warms Up Christchurch

The 19th Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival started in Christchurch with our hardy hockey players and supporters braving a strong and cold blustery wind followed by a party that’s going to last all week. The Parade of Nations began at the Christchurch Netball Centre and made its way to the Festival Hub in Hagley Park to be welcomed by a Maori welcome from Ngai Tahu. Lianne Dalziel the Mayor of Christchurch then

welcomed Golden Oldies Hockey to Christchurch. Her welcome was warm and typical of the friendly welcome we can expect throughout the city for the next week. Local music duo Vague As Brothers hit the stage and sang the songs we all knew the words to. Bee Gees, Elvis, Creedence Clearwater - you name it they did it. The photo above? ‘YMCA’ a perennial favourite and some of the best moves you’ll see all week.

HOW’S THE BODY?

NEWCASTLE BEACHES

Life is a Beach for this team, so much so that a Team Member was on the beach back home in Australia on Saturday lapping up a balmy 31 degrees, around 24 hours later it was off to The Garden City and a rather chilly autumn afternoon for the Opening Ceremony.

If it’s twisted, broken or just plain shagged out see the team in the massage tent. Their magic hands will have you as good as new in no time. Or as close to it as possible.

But if their previous results are anything to go by action on the pitch will be Red Hot this week, at a previous event in Hawaii they went through unbeaten. If the team can keep up their winning ways this week they could say “Life’s Peachy” or maybe even “Life’s Beachy”.

THE WIZARDS

The Wizard is synonymous with Canterbury so when The “Wizards” wanted to create some wizardry of their own on the pitch they knew just where to turn. Yes local team “The Wizards” were granted permission from the man himself to use the name and with such high profile backing they sure are a team to look out for. The “Wizards” team has taken on many guises (and names) over the years but this team involves only men.

LITHGOW STEAMERS

Australian side “Lithgow Steamers” are named after the famous Zig Zag Railway with steam trains travelling on it’s tracks, well in the name of Hockey the “ Steamers” have Zig Zagged the world to be at the Festivals.

I’m sure the “Wizards” will be looking to cast some spells of their own on the pitch this week.

This tight knit group who predominantly all live close by with just a few members in other parts of Australia are firm friends and socialise together outside Hockey. That fits in well with the mantra of “ Fun, Friendship and Fraternity” that forms the basis of the Festival.

MERCHANDISE

The great range of merchandise will be available through to Saturday night. Merchandise will not be discounted on Saturday. Jackets, beanies, caps, hoodies - all available. Quality items that will be a great reminder of Christchurch.

IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE?

No it’s ‘Wander Women’ from the USA and their dynamic sidekick - Wilma.
