Can you rear pigs without giving up the day job? Yes, says Nicola Crosse, the editor of Sawday's British B&B guides. Here she tells how her dream became a reality. My yearning for pigs went on for weeks. The weeks turned into months and years. The barrier to getting them was giving 'it' all up – job, house, city – to move to the country. I need my income and I live in the city with a sociable teenager whose idea of personal disaster is moving to the countryside. It seemed that I would have to wait for ever. But now, unbelievably, I have the job and the pigs. A piece of land came up opposite our offices and, thanks to a resourceful boss and a stroke of luck, I've been able to install two Berkshires. There I’ve watched my pigs grow and taken them for daily walks. I know their field. To my left there are two further fields. Rural bliss? Not quite, for this is two miles outside Bristol. If I look the other way the view is over a dual carriageway, a railway line and a landfill site over which crawl vast lorries. After I’ve fed the pigs I never leave straight away but watch them for a bit, savouring my luck. Even my city teenager shares my joy now and then; he is impressed most of all with my choice of boiler suit (the lead singer of Slipknot has the same). He is fond of the pigs and on summer evenings brings his friends to see them. I hope it all adds a bit of balance to urban hoody-dom. Next year the field will have more allotment space for staff, there are plans for a wildlife pond, even bees. For me it represents the chance to get the balance right for the moment, to do more of the things that make me happy without having to change everything at once. When I walk away from the pigs I am conscious that I am returning to something very different. A short walk down a footpath and I am over a road, into the warm, bright office at Sawday's. The muddy wellies and boiler suit are left by the door and I go straight to my desk, back to work editing B&B books. Bring them on – pigs for office workers! 281
