GORE FRIENDS AND FAMILY, Welcome! This marks our 85th season of doing what we do best – delivering a great winter experience to those who wait all year for the powder to fall. This year, we are excited to show you the many great improvements we have been making at Gore, all while staying true to our identity as the mountain you go to for authentic Adirondack skiing.

Gore is built proudly upon longstanding family traditions. As we improve the experience, we do so hoping to add fond memories in the place you might already have so many. Perhaps you have gathered with friends in the Saddle Lodge; that has been fully renovated for this season. So many folks tell us they learned to ski or snowboard here. An even better version of our learning experiences awaits this winter. The new Straight Brook Lodge welcomes your next visit to the summit.

After 25+ years of employment here at Gore, I am honored to have been appointed as General Manager. I know and love the mountain deeply, have extensive knowledge of outdoor recreation, and I am supported by an amazing staff that is committed to making your time at Gore Mountain the best it can be. IMPROVEMENTS COME TO GORE

Facelifts at Three Gore Lodges Imagine Gore's Saddle Lodge doubled in size, with a modern style that carries over elements of charm from its original structure. In keeping with Gore’s award-winning sustainability efforts, the Saddle Lodge’s new design incorporates its original wooden beams, ceiling, and the exterior concrete arches. An expanded kitchen now accommodates two different dining options. Enjoy a satisfying meal alongside breathtaking Adirondack views at Gore’s newest restaurant (elevation 3,000’), or opt for New Saddle Lodge

At Gore’s summit, plan to take a break at the Straight Brook Lodge. This structure was home to the unloading station of the historic 1967 gondola. The original lift machinery was intertwined with the new construction, preserving an iconic piece of Gore history while introducing welcome conveniences up top. This gathering place provides space to warm up, a sunny deck for bragging about your last run, vending machines, and restrooms.

It’s very exciting for Nordic and alpine skiers to be part of that.”

The Ski Bowl has a new Nordic Center!

“Winter wonderland just comes to mind. It definitely has a home-like feel to it. I think the vibes emitted from it being a combined alpine and Nordic venue make it very special and different from other places. There is a historical component as well, knowing it’s the Ski Bowl and home to some of the first skiing in the Northeast. You are throwing yourself into a piece of that heritage."

Can you tell us what makes the trail system unique?

Not only do we have man-made snow, but we are open later into the evening so people can get in some activity after work.

To see Gore Mountain invest the resources and put the time and energy behind this Nordic Center is really great. To think that we would have a venue like this, even a few years back, would have never crossed my mind. It’s really exciting for this to be happening - this kind of culture in my hometown.”

What has been most rewarding about working here?

“I love seeing the positive interactions between Gore’s Nordic staff and the public. The staff does a tremendous job in making the Center be at its best and ensuring that all guests are welcomed and having a good experience. Consistently having young people at the Nordic Center lends us a lot of energy and good times. One of my goals is to create a ski culture where there is more connectivity between the community and Nordic skiing.”

What’s it like for spectators?

There is some amazing racing talent out there and you are in such close proximity to what’s going on.”

What do you like about North Creek?

“The recreational options are wide open, and there are a variety of musical and cultural experiences. I think this is a great community to experience living the outdoors. There is a lot of opportunity to be part of a lifestyle that is active and healthy. In this town and at the Nordic Center, we are promoting activities that you can do for your entire life.”

TREES OF GORE

• Burnt Ridge Mountain High Peaks Area • North Creek Ski Bowl • North Side • Northwoods Area • Straight Brook Area • Topridge Area IRONWOOD A leafy tree also known as the Blue Beech or Musclewood. The hard, heavy wood is used for tool handles, walking sticks and canes, and golf clubs.

Only grows east of the Rocky Mountains.

(AMERICAN) BEECH Early settlers often looked for beeches as a sign of a good potential place to farm. The wood is so heavy and hard that beeches were left uncut before power tools were available. Beechnuts provide food for numerous animals, including humans.

MOUNTAIN ASH Also called "Wayfarer's Tree," it supposedly prevents those on a journey from getting lost. Grows in an oval shape and puts on a spectacular fall show. The fruit of this tree persists through the winter and can intoxicate birds after fermenting from a few frosts!

SUGAR MAPLE The State Tree of New York and the source of our famous maple syrup! Can live over 400 years and stand over 100'.

STRIPED MAPLE Also known as Moosewood, as moose eat its bark in winter. The greenish-brown bark has vertical white stripes on the small, shade-tolerant tree.

(WHITE) PINE Known by the Iroquois as the Tree of Peace, this towering tree is the tallest in eastern North America. Mature trees usually have no branches on the lower half of the trunk.

(NORTHERN) RED OAK Considered a national treasure. Their acorns feed wild turkeys, black bears, raccoons, and many others. Oaks grow over 2' per year when young.

BLACK CHERRY This tree's cherries are used for making jams and wines.

The seeds are widely dispersed by mammals that eat them, making this tree a prevalent Northeast species.

Cherry timber is used for premier furniture and cabinets, known for its strong red color and high price.

BASSWOOD Also known as the "Lime Tree," but unrelated to the lime fruit. Bees produce excellent honey with a mildly spicy flavor from its blossoms.

(QUAKING) ASPEN Even a slight breeze causes the leaves of this tree to tremble or "quake." Boasts the largest span and oldest recorded age (8,000 years) of any tree species.

Commonly confused with birches due to its smooth white bark marked by black scars.

YELLOW BIRCH Hawks show a preference for nesting in New York's yellow birches. The wood of birches is still flammable when wet, so it is ideal for campfires.

PAPER BIRCH Also known as white birch and canoe birch. One of the first species to colonize an area. The bark's oil content gives it waterproof and weather-resistant characteristics.

HEMLOCK Produces some of the smallest cones in the pine family.

The Iroquois used the hemlock's needles, which contain Vitamin C, for tea. Hemlock bark is a source of tannic acid used to make leather softer and stronger.

(BALSAM) FIR A favorite choice for Christmas trees. On mountaintops, firs can develop in waves as the trees most exposed to the elements die off and the new ones grow on the more protected side.

(BLACK) SPRUCE Birds eat off this tree, but moose and deer avoid it. Black Spruce is associated with tilted "drunken trees," a sign of the fast thawing of permafrost.

HOW TO SPEAK SNOW

You know how it is: we skier types love our lingo. And yes, it’s a little bit of a cult - but one where all are welcome and the more the merrier. In case you’re a little rusty from last season, here’s a quick refresher on the words that define our snow world. Repeat after us:

CHATTER

That vibrating noise your skis sometimes make, especially over fresh corduroy. It means your edges are losing contact with the snow.

DUMPING

Snowing really hard. Read: “Drop what you’re doing and hightail it to the gondola ASAP. The upper mountain is the perfect place to hang out on dumper days. It’s gonna be epic.”

GNARLY

A positive adjective describing something awesome. Synonyms: rad, cool, sweet, legit.

Used in a sentence: “Dude, did you catch that fresh pow up there on Uncas? Super gnarly.”

Can also have a connotation of intensity, very fitting for the adrenaline rush some of Gore’s steeper slopes up top, like The Rumor and Lies, will give you.

POW

Short for powder. This is the light and fluffy stuff, the Holy Grail of winter precipitation. Riding on pow is like skiing through a cloud. If you’re looking to find stashes of pow at Gore, check out any of our 28 glades. If tree skiing isn’t your style, you might still find some hidden pow on the North Side, Little Dipper, or Hudson.

JIB

Skiing on anything that isn’t snow. Rails, boxes, trees, ponds, you name it. The world is your playground. For some jibbing opportunities, check out terrain features in 9 different park areas, including Wild Air, Forever Wild, and the Sleighride trails.

SADDLE LODGE

It’s located partway up the mountain, accessible by lifts only. It’s right where the Adirondack Express Quad drops you off. Stop by the newly-renovated space to get toasty and take in some pretty amazing Adirondack mountain views.

PIZZA

The wedge shape you make with your skis when you’re learning or trying to slow down.

It’s the opposite of “french fries,” which is when you’re skiing parallel. If you’re riding by some beginners, it’s not uncommon to hear shouts of “Pizza! Now french fries! Now back to pizza!”

GROM

Short for “grommet.” Slang term for a young participant in extreme sports. Mini shredders, we see you. The Gore Snow Sports Center and racing programs specialize in raising the new generation of groms.

POWDER HOUND

A snow junkie, a ski bum in search of the next patch of perfect, undisturbed powdery goodness. Trust me, one taste of pow and you’ll be chasing after it for the rest of your life.

LIFTIE

One of the lovely folks manning the lines and getting you situated onto the lifts as you make your way up the mountain. Gore has the coolest lifties in the world. Give ‘em a wave!

SNOW TRAIN

Chugga-chugga choo-choo! The Snow Train is one of two awesome conveyor belt lifts that ski instructors can bring newbies on, so everyone can head safely up the hill. It’s named after the arrival of North Creek’s first destination skiers via rail in 1934. Located by the Mountain Adventure Center near the Bear Cub surface lift. Kids ride up, kids slide down.

Got it? Good. Now that you speak the lingo, we’ll meet you on the mountain for a gnarly, pow-filled day!

GORE SNOW SPORTS LOVE Article by Jocelyn Arndt Gore Mountain teaches kids to love skiing.

How do I know?

I was one of those kids.

I learned to ski pretty much right after I started walking, and Gore was with me every step of the way, from my first turns on the bunny hill to the day I braved the steeps of Rumor. But looking back at my time in lessons at the Gore Mountain Ski School, I learned so much more than how to get down the slopes.

I learned that just because something seems daunting at first doesn’t mean you should quit. You just need the right kind of help. Here at Gore, the right kind of help wears a blue instructor jacket and an encouraging smile, and they’re here to change your definition of impossible.

I learned to keep my head up and my eyes open, because there’s beauty everywhere you look. The icicles on the pine trees, the fox darting across the trail, the clouds above you and the mountain beneath your feet - this is a magical place. Open your eyes and don’t let the beauty escape you.

I learned that finding lasting friendship is easy if you can meet others who love the same things you do.

The friends I made during my time in lessons at Gore will be in my life forever. Bonds forged on chairlift rides aren’t easily broken.

I learned to trust myself, to believe in my ability to learn, and to share that belief with others. I went from taking lessons to becoming an instructor myself, and got the chance to do for others what Gore’s staff did for me. Confidence is contagious. This isn’t just a place where you move mountains - it’s a place where you learn to shred them.

Gore has given me so much. Friends, skills, smiling photos I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.

And above it all, a love for the Adirondacks that raised me and the sport that made me who I am today. Because when those snowflakes start to fall, I remember the memories I’ve made on these trails, and I can’t wait to relive it all on the next run.

I’m so thankful I grew up Gore.

You can score some extra time on the mountain by familiarizing yourself to how the Hudson Chair, Burnt Ridge Mountain, and the North Side are networked. Ski where the locals do—link up with all four sprawling peaks and add some adventure to your day. Even if you didn’t grow up on these slopes, you’ll soon feel like you did.

GORE'S ORIGINAL BASE CAMP The North Creek Ski Bowl opened in 1934 when the first ski train from Schenectady brought 378 skiers to the site.

Today, located at the foot of Little Gore Mountain, the Bowl keeps that cherished history close, while offering guests a year-round recreation and community complex. Guests head to the Ski Bowl for alpine skiing and snowboarding, freestyle fun, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

Opportunities for adventure don’t cease once the snow fades away. During the warmer months, the Ski Bowl offers 20km of picturesque hiking and mountain bike trails. With both single track and open ski trails available, there’s something here for everyone - whether it’s a scenic autumn hike with friends or a day of challenging mountain biking. There's Adirondack flower gardens and tennis, too.

Snow Style H I S TO R Y

There’s a fresh layer of pow on the ground, and it’s time to gear up for a day on the slopes. But first, you have to get dressed. What kind of getup are you reaching for?

The answer to that question depends entirely on the decade. Ski fashion has evolved a lot over the past hundred years.

Let’s take a trip through snow style history, shall we?

Pole straps off, goggles on - this is going to be quite the ride.

Early 1900s The turn of the 20th century marks the first instances of organized ski races and the beginning of modern ski culture. Pull on your warmest wool sweater, strap on those leather boots, and hop to it. Ladies, you’re skiing in skirts. Don’t worry - you can put on some insulating leggings underneath.

Mid-1900s Woohoo! Pants for everyone! We’re still pretty heavy into the woolwear, although synthetic fabrics are gaining popularity.

If there’s one rule now, it’s color coordination! Make sure your patterned turtleneck matches your high-waisted wool pants, which should also match your scarf, which goes perfectly with your mittens.

1960s-1970s Groooovy. The clothes are tighter, the colors are brighter, and stripes are definitely a thing. Fleece and nylon are all the rage. Sporty attire is in right now, so it’s perfectly acceptable to wear your ski jacket out on the town, especially if you zip off the sleeves first.

1980s Your goal is to incorporate as many of the most blinding shades of neon as you can into your outfit. Doesn’t match? Doesn’t matter. You’re going for impact here. Tease your hair, don a headband and overalls, and hit the slopes. If your snow pants are hanging on the line right now, never fear you can always ski in your jeans!

1990s Move over, skis - there’s a new shredding tool in town. Enter the snowboard, and with it a whole new facet of snow culture that’ll shake things up at the mountain.

Some of the windbreakers you’ve got left over from 1988 might still be okay, although you’ll probably want to tone down the colors a little bit. You know that pastel crayon-scribble design that’s on everything? Go for that.

Modern Day The whole world’s gone parabolic! The rise of shaped skis and other revolutionary ski equipment modifications have made ski fashion very tech-forward. Moisture-wicking fabrics, state-of-the-art goggles, you name it - anything to make your on-snow experience more comfortable and enjoyable. One thing’s for sure, though… you’re gonna need a brainbucket. Helmets are a regular part of today’s ski getup.

But wait… is that a neon onesie I just saw zip past me on the hill?

Gore Mountain has a storied history of innovation.

Here, we look at just some of the milestones that have established Gore as the premier snow sports experience in the Northeast.

1964

The primary Gore Mountain facility is opened by New York State on January 25.

It features a j-bar, a t-bar, and for the more advanced, a double chair, the longest lift in the East.

1934

The first snow train, carrying 378 winter enthusiasts, arrives in North Creek at 10:30am on March 4. The Ski Patrol was organized, led by Lois Perret. It served as a model for patrols all over the world.

A 3000' t-bar is installed at the North Creek Ski Bowl, servicing 830 vertical feet.

Gore Mountain installs its first snowmaking system on four trails: Sleeping Bear, Sunway Showcase, and Cloud.

The first gondola in New York State is installed at Gore Mountain. It remains New York's only gondola until 1999.

The Topridge Area is introduced with a lift and four new trails. Conveniently linking guests from the Straight Brook Valley to Bear Mountain's summit, Topridge transforms the Gore Mountain experience.

New terrain serviced by a high-speed quad opens on Burnt Ridge Mountain, increasing Gore's vertical to 2300'.

The 1984 Adirondack Express is replaced with an all-new luxurious and high-speed detachable quad, AEII.

Let’s ensure both happen with a quick mountain safety refresher course.

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) believes education, helmet use, respect, and common sense are of the utmost importance when cruising down the mountain – and we agree. That’s why we’ve adopted the “Your Responsibility Code” from the NSAA to help skiers and snowboarders be more aware of how to stay safe on the mountain. Below is just a partial list of rules to follow.

A HELMET - IT’S A SMART IDEA.

As part of our commitment to safety, Gore includes a free helmet with every rental package. We urge skiers and riders to wear a helmet, but to also remain safety-conscious, skiing or riding with care. Skiing and snowboarding in a controlled and responsible manner is the best way to ensure your safety. Helmets, however, do make a difference in reducing or preventing injury from falls or other impacts. So cover that head!

If you’re unsure as to whether you or your child is properly fitted for a snow sport helmet, don’t be afraid to ask a Gore team member for assistance. They’d be glad to help.

PRACTICE LIFT SAFETY

Riding a chairlift is one of the safest forms of transportation available, but there are risks involved when people and moving machines come together. Your personal behavior is critical for overall chairlift safety.

It is your responsibility to know how to use and ride the lift safely. As a parent, you should emphasize and educate your child about the overall importance of chairlift safety. Before you start, stand outside the lift line and with your child, watch other skiers and boarders line up and load the chairlift, explaining the process. Stress that your child should ask the lift attendant for assistance any time they need it.

Chairlift Guidelines It is best that a parent or adult ride in the middle of a chair seat, with the child and/or children on either side of the adult. Smallest kids should load closest to the attendant.

You should load onto a chair seat when you are ready. It’s okay to allow an empty chair to go by if you or your child is not prepared to safely load the lift.

GENERAL SAFETY REMINDERS oo Gore is loaded with glades to explore on every 4 mountain area! Always go into glades with someone, wear your goggles, and remove your pole straps.

If they get lost, children should go to the base of the nearest lift and let the attendant know they need assistance locating their parents.

Before loading, remove and hold packs as straps may become entangled. Holding packs will reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Remove ski poles from your wrists and hold your poles in one hand. Parents, it may be helpful to hold your child’s ski poles, as well as your own, while loading the chairlift.

Once on the lift, your child should sit back as far as possible and should never lean forward toward the edge of the seat, nor rest on the restraint bar. Emphasize to sit still, hang on, and absolutely no horseplay while riding the lift!

4 WINTER OLYMPIC MOMENTS THAT INSPIRE US The Winter Olympics mean something different for everyone but, to us, nothing beats the thrill of watching athletes soar to new heights. It’s a powerful reminder that there may be glory waiting for all of us, out on the snow.

Starting February 9, all eyes will be on PyeongChang, South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympics. As we prepare for a new generation of winter superheroes to be discovered, let’s look back and remember the heroes of yesteryear, celebrating the moments that helped put winter sports on the map.

Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards Some ski jumpers soar like eagles, others fall like bricks. During Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympic Games, Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards was sorely the latter.

Eddie competed in the 70m and 90m with no training, zero sponsorships, and as the first ski jumper in Britain’s history since 1929. Did he medal? Is this an epic underdog story? Nope, sorry. He didn’t just come in last, he came in dead last, miles away from the rest of the field. His spectacularly awful attempts made him a celebrity on the talk show circuit. Despite his inspirational gumption, the International Olympic Committee was not amused. After 1988, The “Eddie the Eagle Rule” rule was enacted to make it harder for athletes to qualify for the Olympics.

Snowboarding Gets Its Olympic Debut In 1998, snowboarding made its Olympic debut with four events – Men’s and Women’s giant slalom and halfpipe. Ross Rebagliati won the first gold medal in snowboarding in the men's giant slalom, with Gian Simmen winning halfpipe, Karine Ruby earning slalom gold, and Nicola Thost taking the halfpipe.

Today, snowboarding accounts for 11 events at the Winter Games, including 10 individual events and one team.

The Miracle on Ice The Winter Olympics Come to Lake Placid (Twice) In 1932, the Winter Olympic Games left Europe – home of the previous two Games - and headed to Lake Placid, NY for the first U.S.-hosted Games.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (the then-New York Governor) opened the Games that saw more than 250 athletes from 17 nations participating in the 12-day event.

This wouldn’t be the last time the Winter Olympics called Lake Placid home. The games returned in 1980 and saw the creation of the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).

ORDA manages the facilities at Whiteface, Belleayre, and our own Gore Mountain to this day!

Okay, so this one didn’t take place on a mountain, but it was the greatest upset in U.S. sports history.

A gritty team of mostly-college hockey players went up against a seasoned Soviet powerhouse and won.

The Soviet team had won in six of the previous seven Olympics and was the clear favorite. However, the U.S. team showed that sometimes heart beats brawn. With just seconds left in a game tied 3-3, ABC broadcaster Al Michaels asked fans, “Do you believe in miracles?” And before there was time to respond, it was clear the answer was YES. The U.S. surpassed the Soviets and went on to beat Finland for the gold the very next day. We get chills just thinking about it.

What you may not have known? ORDA’s very own CEO drove the Zamboni of the Miracle on Ice game!
