ichael Casper enters his fourth season as head coach, and eighth season overall, with the Red Flash men’s soccer team. In 2007, Casper brought together an experienced team to lead them to the Northeast Conference championship match, one step away from the school’s coveted first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Casper has had two strong recruiting classes in each of the last two years to help the Red Flash get back into position to compete for a Northeast Conference playoff berth. Saint Francis showed signs of maturity in 2009, and are ready to take the next step this season. Prior to his appointment as Saint Francis’ sixth head coach, Casper served four seasons as an assistant under mentor B.J. Craig. Together, Casper and Craig laid the foundation for the success the Red Flash have enjoyed over the past six seasons, which includes a combined record of 16-156 in Northeast Conference play and a pair of trips to the NEC championship match in the last four seasons. Saint Francis is looking to get back to the excellence it enjoyed in 2006 and 2007 when the team put together a combined mark of 12-3-3 in Northeast Conference matches. During his seven-year tenure in Loretto, Casper has overseen the development of 10 all-Northeast Conference players, seven NSCAA All-Region players, one NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, four ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees, and one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Additionally, he has had six different players named to the NEC All-Tournament Team, 55 players named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll, and two of his last three teams have received the NEC Team Grade-Point-Average Award for having the highest team GPA among all men’s soccer teams in the 11-team league. The accolades received by Saint Francis’ men’s soccer players over the past seven seasons are unprecedented in the program’s history. While the 2006 season set the benchmark for success to date at Saint Francis, the 2007 campaign was nearly as impressive. The team’s 9-9-2 overall record helped the team achieve a .500or-better record for the fourth consecutive season, the first four in the program’s history. Bryce Luetzen, Andrew Stephens and Jeremy Tice were all named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II teams, the first three players in program history to be so named. Luetzen went on to be named to the Academic All-America Second Team, and was named the NEC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jarron Brooks and Bryan Maguire were named to the NSCAA All-North Atlantic Regional Second Team, while a promising young freshman, Patrick Fleming, was named to the region’s third team. Fleming repeated on the NSCAA All-North Atlantic Region Third Team in 2008. Brooks, Luetzen and Maguire were each named all-conference honorees, and Brooks, Jon Guse and Daniel Moir were named to the NEC All-Tournament squad. Defender Sean O’Reilly joined Saint Francis’ ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II honorees in 2009 by being named to the second team. Prior to taking over the head coaching position, Casper spent four seasons as an assistant coach in charge of the team’s goalkeepers. He coached former Red Flash goalkeeper Bobby Pipech to a school-record 15 career shutouts and a 1.31 goals-against-average, also a school record. The goalkeeper who replaced Pipech, Brad Williams, has since broken the shutout record. Pipech’s .774 career save percentage is also second in school annals. Williams tied Pipech’s single-season school record of seven shutouts in 2006, and broke his former mentor’s school record with a 0.76 goals against average as a first-year starter that season. Williams then bested his shutout record in 2007 with eight shutouts to tie the all-time school record of 15. A four-year member of the UMBC men’s soccer team, Casper helped lead the Retrievers to a Northeast Conference championship in 1999. During Casper's four-year career at UMBC, the Retrievers posted a composite record of 54-19-11 (30-7-3 NEC). Following his collegiate career, Casper served as head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at Timothy Christian High School (NJ) for two seasons (2001-02). In 2000, Casper served as head coach of the Central Jersey Riptide in the Professional Development League. He holds a B License from the United States Soccer Federation and an advanced regional diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Casper received his master’s degree in Education Leadership from Saint Francis in 2005 and is a 2000 graduate of UMBC with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

avid Casper enters his second season at Saint Francis University after serving the 2008 season as an assistant/goalkeeper coach at William Paterson University.

During his one season as an assistant coach in Wayne, N.J., Casper assisted in all aspects of planning and conducting training sessions, game analysis, scouting, recruiting, team travel, fundraising, equipment management, community relations, and academic monitoring. He helped lead the Pioneers to a 13-5-4 overall record, and a 5-3-1 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). After not appearing in the preseason national rankings, Casper helped guide William Paterson to a national ranking as high as 11th. The Pioneers spent eight consecutive weeks in the NSCAA national rankings, finished the regular season at No. 22 and No. 3 in the Metro Region, and won the ECAC Metro Region title. William Paterson, which won its first post-season championship since 1975, set a school record with nine shutouts. In addition to his coaching experience at William Paterson, Casper served as the varsity assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at Timothy Christian High School during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, and was the varsity head coach at Somerset Christian Academy in 2003. While playing for William Paterson, Casper was an honorable-mention all-NJAC selection as a junior in 2006. He posted career totals of 31 starts in 32 appearances with a 1.64 goals-against average, a .735 save percentage and eight shutouts. Prior to his arrival at William Paterson, he was a member of the 2002 national championship team at Messiah College. Casper has remained active during the summer months by working on his coaching skills during camps at Notre Dame (2 years), Michigan State, Rhode Island, Navy and Saint Francis. The younger brother of head coach Michael Casper, David Casper received his bachelor of science degree in Physical Education, from William Paterson. He is working towards his masters in education leadership at Saint Francis University.

Season outlook

M

ichael Casper heads into his fourth season as head coach of the Red Flash men’s soccer program, and will have the services of 15 returning lettermen with which to work in 2010. Saint Francis fell short of the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2009, but had some big wins that showed hope for this year and beyond. SFU won non-conference road matches at IPFW and Valparaiso, and handed Monmouth, which was ranked seventh in the nation at the time, its only regular season loss of the year. A young squad has matured, and is showing signs that it is about to blossom into one of the top teams in the Northeast Conference. Returning veterans have dedicated themselves to Saint Francis’ new strength & conditioning program, which came into existence in 2009, and players are beginning to buy into their roles. Under the leadership of senior team captains Patrick Fleming and Tyler Hibbs, the Red Flash are in good hands from top to bottom. Saint Francis is preparing to play teams from eight different conferences, including three teams that made the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. Casper will lead the Red Flash into non-conference battles against teams from the Big Ten, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Patriot League, The Summit League, The Big South, and the Atlantic Soccer Conference, in addition to the team’s 10-match Northeast Conference slate. The 18-game schedule includes eight non-conference games and 10 league contests. Six of Saint Francis’ eight non-conference games are against opponents that finished with overall winning records in 2009. Big Ten power Penn State (Sept. 29), Patriot League champion Bucknell (Sept. 22) and Northeast Conference champion Monmouth (Oct. 29) all made the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Here is a look at the 2010 Red Flash position-by-position: FORWARDS The Red Flash struggled to score goals in 2009, but return a highly talented front line in Patrick Fleming, Owen Gombami, Kingsley McLeod and Wayne Tiller. The foursome combined for eight goals last season. Fleming moved to the midfield in 2009, and missed out on some scoring opportunities. He tallied just one goal, a career-low, but led the team with three assists. Fleming, who is a team co-captain, returns to forward this year, giving SFU a legitimate scoring threat game-in and game-out. Gombami was limited by nagging injuries in 2009, and had found the net just once. After scoring three goals as a freshman at Lee University in Tennessee, Gombami showed promise as a sophomore when he lit the lamp three times for the Red Flash. A healthy Gombami will put pressure on opposing defenses in 2010. McLeod has four goals through his first two seasons, and has shown flashes of developing into one of the top forwards in the Northeast Conference. Now in his third season, McLeod has the experience to take his game to the next level. Despite his small 5-foot-3 stature, Tiller is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He is one of the fastest players in the Northeast Conference and has the ability to get past and around defenders in the blink of an eye. He played in 17 matches as a freshman, scoring two goals and five points, and is expected to take on more of a role in 2010. MIDFIELDERS In the midfield, Taylor Powers and David Butler lead a group that also includes Kyle Driscoll, Tyler Hibbs and Seamus Ryder. Powers brings stability and two years of experience to a group of midfielders who should be among the best in the Northeast Conference this season. He has played in 28 matches, including 14 starts,

during his first two seasons in Loretto. Butler is another speedy option for the Red Flash, and often draws rave reviews from opposing coaches. He finished second on the team in goals (3) and scoring (8) in 2009, and will be a key figure in the midfield this season. Driscoll brings much-needed depth to the midfield, and has played in 20 games during his career. He was limited to just four matches in 2009. Hibbs is a team co-captain, and obvious leader, on the Red Flash and has started 48 of 55 matches during his career. His experience and attitude will be a positive for his teammates. Ryder started seven of 16 matches during his first season in Loretto, and came away with one goal. He should benefit from one year of experience under his belt, giving the Red Flash a strong core of midfielders. Freshmen Toby Iguade, Nick Kolarac, Tanner Panza and David Trunzo will also get a look during preseason camp. DEFENDERS The Red Flash could have one of the most talented and deepest defense corps in the Northeast Conference. A young group is beginning to mature, and is showing signs of fulfilling the potential that has shown flashes of excellence. Makala Hairston, Benjamin Kujawa, Tamas Maffey-Stumpe, Sean O’Reilly and James Price will compete for the starting positions, while incoming freshmen Toby Iguade and Tanner Panza will also garner attention during preseason camp. Hairston played in nine matches during his freshman campaign, and is looking to continue his progress as a strong defender. Kujawa is a steady and calming presence in the back four for Saint Francis. He has started 32 of 55 matches, including all 18 last season, that he has played in his career. Kujawa also brings an offensive threat as he has tallied four goals, two assists and 10 points during his first three seasons in Loretto. Maffey-Stumpe performed very well during his first season at Saint Francis, starting 15 of 17 matches. He had one goal, two points and registered 10 shots. O’Reilly is another defender with significant experience. He started 18 of 19 matches in 2009, when he recorded the first two assists of his career. A former team manager, O’Reilly has worked his way up the ladder into a starting role. Price is a big (6-foot-4), fierce defender who has the potential to develop into one of the best in the league. He started 13 of 14 matches in which he played, and will likely find himself in a starting position in 2010. With Kujawa, Maffey-Stumpe, O’Reilly and Price returning to the defense, the Red Flash have four defenders with starting experience.

GOALKEEPERS Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak is the leading candidate to work between the pipes this season. He started one match last season, showing potential to be a top keeper in the Northeast Conference. Valcicak made five saves in a 2-1 victory at IPFW. He was very good during spring practices, and will have that edge over the incoming freshmen. Newcomers Thomas McWilliams and Joseph Sullivan will challenge Valcicak for the goalkeeper duties.

The northeast Conference

W

hen the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To mark the NEC’s 30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the Conference will proudly celebrate its heritage as its builds toward a promising future. The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball). Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. 23

The Stokes Club

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy... Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those who have generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club. The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round. With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improved every day working conditions within the athletic department. We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward and take our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athletics is very bright because you care about our student-athletes. ME MBERSH IP
