The Significant Force That Is Timber Rupert Scott, Marketing Manager of TRADA Technology, explains why Timber Expo will be more than just an exhibition. Using timber as a major material on almost any project provides the greatest scope for truly outstanding design. Its inherent properties ensure good thermal and acoustic performance and, if correctly specified and designed, timber and engineered wood products provide strength where needed – and endless inspiration, both for new build, restoration and refurbishment. As the world’s only truly renewable construction material, it has a special place in the built environment of the future. Valued by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) at more than £7.6 billion, the wood industries and forestry combined comprise the fifth largest industry in the UK – and for the first time Timber Expo will bring this significant force together, under one roof. To take place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 27th and 28th September 2011, it will create a platform to enhance the profile of timber, gathering together forward-thinking companies, timber commentators and business leaders, linking suppliers with specifiers and end users. We understand that in today’s industry individuals want value for money – but they also want to spend their time wisely. Timber Expo therefore is designed to be more than just an exhibition and will provide an opportunity for dialogue, for networking, for learning and for inspiration. Its clear aims have appealed to more than 100 manufacturers and suppliers who have signed up as exhibitors, as well as leading trade bodies. Among those who have pledged their support and sponsorship are the Timber Trade Federation, the Builders Merchants Federation, WWF, the American Hardwood Export Council, PEFC (with the Malaysian Timber Council), American Softwoods, Wood for Good (supported by the Forestry Commission) and the Wood Awards. The UK Structural Insulated Panel Association will construct one of the show seminar theatres using SIPS technology and Frame Wise will construct the other using advanced timber frame technology. Exhibitors include, as Platinum sponsors, International Timber/Pasquill Timber Engineering, AHEC as major sponsors, and B&K Structures, Global Forest Trade Network (WWF), Grainger Sawmills, Timbmet and Wood for Good as Gold Sponsors, with Coillte, Gang-Nail Systems, Latham’s (also

Aiming to attract more than 5,000 visitors from the UK and internationally, Timber Expo will encompass TRADA’s flagship In Touch with Timber conference, in a new format of four half-day sessions (see below). Furthermore, the winners of the Wood Awards 2011 will be unveiled at the event, adding yet more value to the visitor’s day. In short, with free entry to all who pre-register online, Timber Expo will be an event where visitors can be informed, inspired - and do business. Dricon Hits New Heights! Arch Timber Protection’s proven Dricon fire retardant treatment for timber will be protecting the refurbished Charles Inglis Clark (CIC) Memorial Hut, a climber’s facility on Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is the tallest peak in the UK, and this could make the CIC hut the highest fire retardant project in the UK. The CIC hut was first built in the late 1920s and is owned by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. It is 685 m above sea level, below the cliffs on the north face, and is believed to be the only true mountain hut in the UK. This face is the main focus for snow and ice climbing, so the hut gets the heaviest use in the winter. “The hut is used by parties from the UK and all over the world,” says Andrew M James, Convener of the Huts Sub Committee. “Two years ago we built an extension which includes new living space and composting toilets and used a fire retardant on the internal wood linings that had to be applied by hand. This proved to be hard work, messy and not very cost-effective. The next stage of the project was to upgrade the interior of the original building, where a new wood lining over insulation to the timber frame will replace the original pitch pine lining. Once we were assured that it would meet the requirements of a single helicopter lift, less than 900 kg, we decided to use cladding pre-treated with Dricon fire retardant protection, to avoid the problems we had experienced with on site treatment”. With a date already booked for the work programme, to suit a low hut use period and better weather, Arch pulled out all the stops to prepare the treated timber in time. The project will use around 100 sq metres of 12 mm tongue and groove redwood internal timber cladding pre-treated with Dricon to meet Euroclass B standards and because of the access challenges to this remote site, all materials have to be airlifted in by helicopter. “Dricon is robust enough to protect the internal cladding from fire under the extreme conditions found in the winter on Ben Nevis and is the only BBAcertificated fire retardant treatment for timber, providing proven fire protection for interior applications such as this,” says Jacqui Hughes, Arch Timber Protection’s Fire Retardant Sales Manager.
