Hi Friend: Charming. Cultured. A coastal gem. Those are just some of the superlatives travel writers and visitors use to describe Portsmouth and the 18 miles of Seacoast we call home. Our scenic area blends historic charm with a young spirit. From fabulous restaurants to hip boutiques, historic homes to vibrant arts and culture, there’s something here for every visitor to enjoy. HarborGuide is your road map to it all. Visit one of the region's unique music venues, try a new restaurant—there are at least 75 places to dine within downtown Portsmouth alone—explore an out-of-the-way historic site or raise a pint at one of our many microbreweries. It’s all described in here. The teams at big brown books and The Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth are proud to present the 2019 HarborGuide—the Official Guide to Portsmouth and the Seacoast.

Art Around Portsmouth

HarborGuide 16

African Burying Ground Memorial, 386 State Street, Portsmouth, NH

HarborGuide 17

The Seacoast’s natural beauty has inspired artists for generations. Art is everywhere in Portsmouth and its environs, from commissioned public art and historic monuments to playful sculpture and colorful murals.

Commissioned sculptures can be found outside two of the city’s fire stations: Vigilance, by Emile Birch, depicting firefighters of today and the past in bronze, along with a water feature, stands outside the city’s downtown station at 170 Court St.; at 3010 Lafayette Rd., in front of station #2, is a hand-forged metal sculpture of a firefighter rescuing a child. As a visitor to Portsmouth, it’s hard not to discover local art just by walking around. There’s the evocative African Burying Ground Memorial (africanburyinggroundnh.org), located at Chestnut Street between Court and State streets. Designed by Georgia artist Jerome Meadows, the memorial honors the black men and women who lived in Portsmouth in the 18th century. Several blocks over, on Penhallow Street, between State and Daniel streets, look for statuary by local craftsman and stone mason Steven Lee in the Jay Smith Memorial Park. Then meander over to the Memorial Bridge (livingbridge.unh.edu), a piece of art in its own HarborGuide 18

right. In addition to a veteran’s memorial park, the bridge is lit dramatically at night (the views from the bridge make it a photographer’s dream). A five-minute walk from the bridge to Four Tree Island brings you to the granite sculpture My Mother, The Wind, created by Australian sculptor Cabot Lyford. Lyford’s sculpture was inspired by nature and the art of the female body. Portsmouth also has its fair share of murals. “Portsmouth’s murals are my favorite pieces of art,” says Denise Wheeler, co-chair of the Portsmouth 400 steering committee, the city’s 400th anniversary celebration. “They provide a jolt of vibrant whimsy when you come upon them.” A giant whale mural, the Whaling Wall, lines a brick wall of a public parking lot off Maplewood Avenue. Created by artist Robert Wyland in 1993, it’s one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. In 2011, the Portsmouth Museum of Art exhibited the work of six international artists who painted ten murals on privately-owned buildings and structures around town. Controversial at the time, many still exist, including: Shark and Sea Bird, created by graffiti artist Shark Toof on the wall of Granite State Minerals on Ceres Street; Sitting on State Street at State Street near Washington Street, a work by Herakut, a German street artist duo; a little girl with a jump rope surrounded by bees, by artist

Funding public art is part of Portsmouth’s master plan. The Foundry Place Garage at 100 Foundry Place was the first project funded by the city’s Percent for Art ordinance, mandating that one percent of the cost of new or renovated municipal buildings go towards public art. Two works, Working by Terrence Parker, of Eliot, Maine, and an etched glass mural by Seth Palmiter, of Rockport, Maine, are key features of the complex. “We’re really excited about growth in public art,” says Jennifer Minicucci, president of Art-Speak, the city’s arts commission. “Percent for Art is making it a reality. The fact that the city values public art so highly and makes it a priority is wonderful.”

A little further afield, the entire structure of Lost Coast, a resale store at 230 State Road in Kittery, Maine, is a colorful piece of abstract art. Painted by Portland, Maine, artists Ryan Adams and Rachel Manly, the building’s hard to miss. While you’re in the area, take in the 12-foot-tall chair in front of Art on the Hill at 78 Government Street, also in Kittery. Covered in fiberglass and resembling an easy chair, it’s a local landmark. Interested in outdoor sculpture in a natural environment? Alnoba (alnoba. org) in Kensington, offers group tours by appointment of its 400-acre contemporary sculpture park. Or stroll through Bedrock Gardens (bedrockgardens.org) in Lee, featuring multiple outdoor sculptures in a lovely outdoor environment. Foundry Place Garage The Foundry Place Garage (cityofportsmouth. com), towering over Portsmouth’s North End, features parking for 600 as well as the city’s first public art installation under its Percent for Art Ordinance. “Working,” created by artist and landscape designer Terrence Parker of Eliot, Maine, is a steel sculpture inspired by the neighborhood’s former foundries and factories; an etched glass mural by Seth Emerson Palmiter of Rockport, Maine, features two foundry workers, a nod to the city’s industrial workers.

Art ‘Round Town Enjoy a stroll through Portsmouth’s quaint streets and explore local art during Art ‘Round Town (artroundtown.org), Portsmouth’s free monthly art walk. Tour more than 15 of the city’s celebrated art galleries, where you’ll find traditional and contemporary works by local, national and international artists. The event happens the first Friday of the month from 5-8 pm.

Enormous Tiny Art Contemporary art gallery Nahcotta goes big every year with its Enormous Tiny Art show (enormoustinyart. com). Available for sale year-round online and in-store, Enormous Tiny Art is a curated collection of 10” x 10” and smaller works by artists from all over the world. The art is featured in Nahcotta exhibitions September 6-27 and in March 2020, when “the exhibit takes over the entire gallery,” says Michael Dandley, gallery manager. Celebrating Local Food and Fun

"Agritourism gives farmers a source of income while also giving folks a firsthand experience of a working farm and education in local food systems,” says consultant Erin Allgood of Allgood Eats Local. “Farms rely upon multiple revenue streams since it’s impossible to control for factors like crop loss or shifting growing seasons due to climate change.” There are more than 4,000 commercial farms in New Hampshire; Rockingham County alone ranks second in the U.S. for sales from farmers to customers. And there’s plenty of fun to be had, too. *Note: check farm websites or call for information as activities may change due to season or weather. Coppal House Farm (nhcornmaze.com) in Lee has a year-round farm stand selling everything from fresh eggs to their own freshpressed sunflower oil. Enjoy live music, kids’ activities and food among the farm’s 10 acres of sunflowers during its annual Sunflower Festival, July 27 – August 4. In the fall, adventurers of all ages can explore a giant corn maze and schuss across snowy fields in winter in horse-drawn sleigh rides. Nearby, DeMerritt Hill Farm (demeritthillfarm.com), also in Lee, is the site of Haunted Overload, a Halloween experience HarborGuide 22

happening on three weekends from October 11-27, that’s been named one of the country’s scariest. There are less scary activities as well, including a Fly By Disc Golf tournament, May 17-19, a Family Weekend September 7-8, Pumpkinfest October 5-6, as well as fall craft fairs, PYO apples, and an onsite store and bakery selling organically-grown produce, fresh cider, baked goodies, and local crafts. Emery Farm (emeryfarm.com) in Durham (see sidebar) debuts a new farm market and café on Route 4 this summer featuring its own produce as well as other local products. The café sells cold and hot drinks, ice cream, sandwiches and cider donuts. In the fall, there’s a corn maze as well as tractor rides. Starting August 31, Scamman Farm (scammanfarm.com) in Stratham features a corn maze and a pumpkin shack as well as a community marketplace on Saturdays. In Newfields, Vernon Family Farm (vernonfamilyfarm.com) sells their own fresh produce, chicken and “farm pops” (popsicles using their own fruit and veggies) as well as items from other local farmers, at their year-round farm

Seacoast area farms and farmers’ markets are more than just destinations for locally-grown food—they’re fun places to visit. With onsite activities like stores, cafés, corn mazes, apple picking, harvest festivals and more, you can enjoy a day out with the family, learning about local food and supporting area farmers.

INSIDER SCOOP Take a Bite Out of Appledore store. On Friday nights, the farm hosts Wicked Chicken Rotisserie Nights, where you can pick up a fresh rotisserie chicken to go or eat there. There are live music and food events during the summer and fall, including Fire and Ice, a familyfriendly event on August 23; Food and Folk, an outdoor dining and live music event; and a Christmas tree bonfire in early winter.

A fixture at local farmers’ markets, Heron Pond Farm (heronpondfarm.com), based in South Hampton, grows more than 250 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. Purchase fresh vegetables, fruits and a range of locallyproduced foods from their year-round farm stand on Rte. 107A. It wouldn’t be fall in New England without apple picking. Applecrest (applecrest.com) in Hampton Falls has been a pick-your-own (PYO) destination for years. Featuring over 40 varieties of apples as well as fruits and veggies ranging from asparagus to zucchini, the farm's board-and-beam market also sells handpressed cider, homemade apple cider donuts and baked goods, local honey, jams, and maple syrup and much more. Summer and fall festivals offer opportunities to (seasonally) PYO fruits and flowers as well as enjoy live music, hayrides and a wealth of family activities. If you can’t make it to a local farm, try visiting one of the 22 summer farmers' markets or 8 winter season farmers' markets in Seacoast New Hampshire or southern Maine, where you can buy fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy and more directly from area farmers (including some of the farms listed above). There’s a market in nearly every community on the Seacoast as well as the Kittery Community Market (kitterycommunitymarket.com) just over the Memorial Bridge in Maine. See our list on page 68 and visit seacoastlocal.org or seacoastgrowers.org for more information.

Bring island ecology to your plate during Take a Bite Out of Appledore (shoalsmarinelaboratory. org/event/eco-culinary), a weekend eco-culinary experience September 6-8 at the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island, six miles off the New Hampshire coast. Forage, fish, and explore the island’s rocky shores alongside ecologists and award-winning chefs. Learn firsthand about the region’s marine ecosystem and enjoy dining outside, with ocean views, and gain an appreciation for local, sustainable food.

Farm-a-Q Slow Food Seacoast, a local chapter of Slow Food USA, brings together area chefs, farmers, gardeners and food-lovers for events and projects that support a healthy, sustainable food system. One of its annual events is the familyfriendly Farm-a-Q (slowfoodseacoast.com) on July 14 at Tuckaway Farm in Lee. Explore the farm, enjoy live music, and sample fresh food prepared by some of the region’s top chefs.

Emery Farm Owned by the same family since 1660, Emery Farm (emeryfarm.com) is a Durham landmark. The farm reopens its market and expanded café/bakery on busy Route 4 this July. Stop in for a sandwich, salad, ice cream, or coffee and one of their award-winning cider donuts. Browse the market which offers the farm’s fresh produce and other local products. There’s also a petting zoo and PYO blueberries during July as well as a corn maze and pumpkin patch in the fall.

ON THE WATER Coastal Celebrations of the Seacoast

HarborGuide 26

It could be argued that in summer and early fall, it’s one big party on the waterways and adjacent shorelines of the Seacoast. Here are just a handful of the watery celebrations to be on the lookout for this season.

The four-day Sail Portsmouth celebration, which includes day sails, special exhibits, food, and music, is a fundraiser to support PMC’s Sea Challenge program. The 2019 program hopes to provide as many as 60 scholarships to at-risk Seacoast teens for adventure learning programs in August 2020 aboard sail-training tall-ship vessels. Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses (lighthousefoundation.org) kicks off its 2019 season with its annual Lighthouse Open Houses, running on Sundays from 1-5 p.m. from late May through mid-October. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse is located on Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor (facebook.com/ CGStationPortsmouthHarbor) in New Castle, and is only accessible during the open houses. The Friends also sponsor a series of special cruises, including the popular Sunset Lighthouse

HarborGuide 28

A tall ship in Portsmouth Harbor

Cruises aboard the M/V Granite State, which run June 21 and 28, departing Rye Harbor at 7 p.m. On August 17, the group will offer a special sunset lighthouse cruise with guest photographer Michael Leonard on board. And finally, the Five Lighthouse Cruise will sail from Rye Harbor State Marina on Saturday, September 14, at 8:30 a.m. aboard the M/V Granite State for the most extensive lighthouse cruise on the Seacoast. It doesn’t get much more picturesque than full sails against a vivid blue sky and the Isles of Shoals as a backdrop, during the annual Gosport Regatta. This year’s race is September 15, 2019, and is a fundraiser for the Piscataqua Sailing Association (sailpsa.org), which supports sailinglesson scholarships for local children. Gosport Regatta is a destination pursuit race similar to those that began back in 1873 at the Isles of Shoals, in which the famed yacht America raced. The entire day is a party with upwards of 300 people on Star Island for kite flying, live music, and a barbecue.

It’s always an exhilarating sight to watch the tall ships sailing in and out of Portsmouth Harbor during the Sail Portsmouth Tall Ships event, sponsored by the Piscataqua Maritime Commission (PMC, sailportsmouthnh.org). This summer, the U.S. Coast Guard’s own CGC Eagle will enter Portsmouth Harbor August 1, 2019, as part of the Parade of Sail that begins about 1:15 p.m. The Eagle will make its way up the Piscataqua River and, with the assistance of Portsmouth tugs, will dock at the New Hampshire State Pier. There, the Eagle will be available for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 4; by special arrangement of PMC, veterans and first responders can tour the ship for free from 9-10 a.m. each day.

For a taste of early Portsmouth river life, take a cruise on the Piscataqua River with the nonprofit Gundalow Company (gundalow.org). It operates the Piscataqua, a reproduction of the traditional flat-bottomed cargo barges, or gundalows, that once hauled goods for trade up and down the river. Choose a daytime sail, an evening Sunset Sail, an Adventure Speaker Series cruise, or a Concert Cruise with live music. Gundalow Company also hosts the annual Round Island Regatta, scheduled this year for June 1, 2019. Both Sail and Paddle classes launch from Peirce Island Boat Ramp and circle around Round Island, while spectators cheer from the banks of the Back Channel. New this year is an optional long course for experienced rowers and paddlers that circles both Round Island and Lady Isle, as well as inclusive entry to a brand-new event, the Piscataqua Riverfest and Boat Show, on the grounds of Strawbery Banke Museum and Prescott Park. Of course, a perennial favorite is taking one of the day cruises from Portsmouth Harbor operated by the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company (islesofshoals.com) or Portsmouth Harbor Cruises (portsmouthharbor.com). Whether it’s a sail up the Piscataqua River, a romantic wine or sunset cruise, a dedicated party sailing, or a voyage to the Isles of Shoals, you’re sure to savor every moment of your outing on the waterways of the Seacoast. [by Pat Chaudoin]

INSIDER SCOOP Wood Island Life Saving Station Standing watch for more than 100 years just off the coast of Kittery, Maine, Wood Island Life Saving Station (woodislandlifesaving.org) was once a base for the U.S. Life Saving Service, men who rescued mariners in distress. Built in 1908, the structure was neglected for decades. Over the last few years, thanks to fundraising efforts and a dedicated group of volunteers, the life saving station has been restored and will eventually re-open as a maritime museum. Watch—or participate in—the annual Wood Island Flotilla, a marine parade from Pepperrell Cove to Wood Island and back, on August 24.

USS Albacore Museum The USS Albacore (ussalbacore. org) is a dry-docked submarine that was designed and built at the nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Commissioned in 1953, it was the first submarine to feature a teardrop hull design, making it the world’s fastest sub. Top-secret features tested on the Albacore by the U.S. Navy led to the high-speed silent operation used on modern U.S. submarines. It’s open seasonally for tours at Albacore Park in Portsmouth.

Hit the Beach This August, be inspired as war veterans and their families ride the waves off Hampton’s North Beach during the 12th annual Hit the Beach (post35.us), a project coordinated by the Wounded Warrior Project, American Legion Post 35, the Manchester VA, New England Disabled Sports, and local surf shops. “It’s an awesome event and cause,” says Dave Cropper, owner of Cinnamon Rainbows surf shop, which provides boards and wetsuits for the event. “Helping people in the water is just amazing.”

Historic homes in and around Portsmouth offer a fascinating glimpse of New England history and, if you enjoy gardens, a beautiful look at early landscapes. These historic sites are easily accessed on foot.

Moffatt-Ladd House

So, put on some comfortable shoes...here’s a brief guide to some of the Seacoast’s grand historic homes and their gardens (many of these sites are open seasonally. Call or visit their websites for more information).

A short walk from Strawbery Banke is the Governor John Langdon House (historicnewengland.org). A National Historic Landmark, the house, an exceptional example of Georgian architecture, was built in 1784. Home of John Langdon, three-term governor of New Hampshire as well as a merchant and shipbuilder (and signer of the U.S. Constitution), the grand home has an expansive back lawn. Shaded by trees, it features a restored perennial flower garden and a rose and grape arbor, making it a popular site for weddings. About five minutes from the Governor John Langdon House is another National Historic Landmark, the John Paul Jones House (portsmouthhistory.org), owned by the Portsmouth Historical Society. Jones, a famed hero of the HarborGuide 34

American Revolution, is credited as one of the founders of the American Navy. His former home, a 3 1/2-story, yellow and white house offers a fascinating glimpse of 18th and 19th century Portsmouth, when the city was a busy maritime port. During late spring and early summer, the garden, designed in 1859 by Samuel Lord, is resplendent with peonies, bright tulips, and fragrant with blooming lilacs. The Rundlet-May House (historicnewengland. org) is a short walk from the John Paul Jones House. Set on a large, tree-filled lot, the imposing three-story Federal-style home was built by textile merchant James Rundlet in 1806-07. Many of its original furnishings still exist, as does its carriage house and stables. The home’s formal garden and orchard, behind the home, were designed as both a working garden and orchard (the gardens are featured in Everything for the Garden, a new book by Historic New England, available in September). Across town is the Moffatt-Ladd House (moffatladd.org), a Georgian-style mansion built in 1763. The home has beautiful interiors as well as a garden designed by Alexander Hamilton Ladd in the late nineteenth century. Highlights include a 300-foot axis path flanked by formal gardens, an

Start your tour at Strawbery Banke (strawberybanke.org), a 10-acre outdoor history museum in the heart of Portsmouth. Covering 300 years of American history, the museum maintains six historic gardens and several heirloom apple orchards, each reflecting a specific era. There’s a garden for nearly every taste, including a Colonial kitchen garden, Victorian ornamental plantings, a Colonial Revival garden, an herb garden, and a victory garden. The museum’s new Horticulture Learning Center, a teaching space for learning more about historic landscapes, opens this summer.

In Portsmouth’s South End, overlooking Little Harbor, is the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion (wentworthcoolidge.org), former home of Benning Wentworth, New Hampshire’s first royal governor. The 40-room home reflects aristocratic life in the 1700s and later, when the Coolidge family welcomed artists like John Singer Sargent and Edmund Tarbell. The lilacs around the home are the oldest in the U.S. (they’re also inspiration for the organization’s annual Lilac Festival in late May). Venture a little further outside Portsmouth. In South Berwick, Maine, Hamilton House (historicnewengland.org), located on a bluff overlooking the Salmon Falls River, is a striking National Historic Landmark, built c. 1785. The Georgian home’s elaborate perennial garden, including a charming garden cottage, is perfect place to stroll and picnic. South of Portsmouth, in North Hampton, Fuller Gardens (fullergardens.org) was created in the late 1920s for Massachusetts’ Governor Alvan T. Fuller’s summer estate. Its well-maintained rose gardens feature hundreds of varieties as well as a Japanese garden and a dahlia display garden. A full list of historic houses in Portsmouth, as well as information about an annual historic house twilight tour on August 9, is available through Portsmouth Historic Sites Associates at portsmouthhistoric.org. Suffragette 2020 August 18, 2020, is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and organizations around the Seacoast are celebrating, including Strawbery Banke Museum (strawberybanke.org), the Portsmouth Public Library (cityofportsmouth. com/library), and the Portsmouth Athanaeum (portsmouthathenaeum.org). For more information and a list of events, visit NHWomenVote100.org.

American Independence Festival The town of Exeter doesn’t technically celebrate July 4th with fireworks. Instead, it hosts The American Independence Festival (independencemuseum.org), a town-wide celebration a week after Independence Day because that’s when townspeople learned in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was signed. Featuring historic battle reenactments, colonial artisan demonstrations, children’s activities, tours, cannon firings and crafts, this year’s Festival, scheduled for July 13, is familyfriendly and fun. The town of Exeter sponsors a fireworks display in the evening.

Fort McClary French and Indian Wars Reenactment Once upon a time, Fort McClary (maine1.gov) defended approaches to the southern Maine coast at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Today, the seaside fort in Kittery, Maine, is a symbol of military history, hosting events like an annual French and Indian Wars Reenactment on June 15-16, sponsored by the Friends of Fort McClary. Costumed in period clothing, reenactors demonstrate daily life during the mid-18th century and reenact battles between the French and British armies, and Native Americans who fought alongside the French. eat From vintage diners to seafood on the deck, the Seacoast is notable for its remarkable restaurants. You have a veritable buffet, from elegant prix fixe to family friendly. Whether it's Asian, Greek, Italian, Mexican, vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free, you'll find it here.

FOODIE CITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT Portsmouth's Vibrant Restaurant Community HarborGuide 65

But it could also be the city’s universal appeal to visitors, says local food writer Denise Wheeler. “Portsmouth has a natural beauty and walking is part of the allure of the city. And we have consistently good restaurants,” she says. Here are some of the chefs and restaurants getting national attention. AWARD-WINNING CHEFS This spring, Evan Mallett of Black Trumpet (blacktrumpetbistro.com) and David Vargas of Vida Cantina (vidacantinanh.com) were named 2019 semi-finalists for best chefs in the Northeast by the James Beard Foundation. It was the third nomination for Mallett, a champion of the area’s food systems, and Vargas’ first. “We’re blessed on the Seacoast with our chef and restaurant community,” says Vargas. “We share the mindset HarborGuide 66

that ‘a rising tide raises all ships’.” Vargas and Mallett are in good company: Matt Louis, chef/ owner of Moxy (moxyrestaurant.com) and The Franklin (franklinrestaurant.com) is a four-time James Beard Award-nominated chef; in Dover, Evan Hennessey, chef/owner of Stages at One Washington, has been nominated once. REALITY TV STAR Hennessey received national attention last year with appearances on several episodes of “Chopped,” a reality-based cooking television show on Food Network. Although Stages itself is tiny, Hennessey—a Cordon-Bleu-trained chef who worked in New York City and Chicago before returning to his hometown of Dover—stepped up big on the national stage. In 2018, he was named champion of the “Chopped” cooking competition (during the show, chefs use ingredients from a “mystery basket” to make different foods for a panel of judges). Last fall, he won the “Chopped Champion Throwdown: Battle 1.” Even though he didn’t win a third competition, it’s been enough to secure his place as a genuine food celebrity. And he can still be found in the small kitchen of Stages, overseeing the restaurant’s modern menu, featuring many locally-sourced ingredients, including foraged mushrooms and other wild edibles. TV TIME Other restaurants are getting their time on national television. The bright colors and vibrant Mexican flavors of Vargas’ Vida Cantina were enough to attract raves from celebrity chef Guy Fieri, host

Creative. Vibrant. Collaborative. The Seacoast restaurant community is exciting, awardwinning and getting national attention (even the lobster and brie nachos at Surf (surfseafood. t a n s StageWashingto com) were e n O called out by the Food Network). That could be inevitable, given that Portsmouth purportedly has more restaurant seats than its 21,000 residents.

of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Fieri also sampled fried clams from Bob’s Clam Hut (bobsclamhut.com), a Kittery, Maine, institution; world cuisine from Street Food 360 (streetfood360. com) St. Louis-style ribs from The Kitchen (thekitchenportsmouth.com); and tapas from Moxy. If you’ve ever watched The Travel Channel, you may have noticed Samantha Brown, a Portsmouth native, extol some of her favorite local dining haunts, including comfort food at Kittery, Maine's Black Birch (theblackbirch.com). Also featured on The Travel Channel’s “101 Places to Chow Down” have been hot dogs from Gilley’s Diner (gillysdiner.com) and hearty breakfasts at The Friendly Toast (thefriendlytoast.com). Food trucks are showing up on the Seacoast, too. This winter, the Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race” filmed in and around Portsmouth, drawing crowds despite singledegree temperatures (Vargas served as a judge). Cisco Brewers (ciscobrewers.com) hosts the 6th Annual New Hampshire Food Truck Festival, part of a national tour, on August 18. It seems the secret’s out—Seacoast restaurants and chefs are getting some well-deserved attention for their dedication to creative local cuisine. “I really appreciate this area’s history and culture and the sense of independence here,” says Vargas. “It all comes together on the Seacoast.” [by Debbie Kane]

Botanica Restaurant and Gin Bar Love of French food is behind chef/owner Brendan Vesey’s newest venture, Botanica Restaurant and Gin Bar (botanicanh. com) in Portsmouth. “French food is underrepresented on the Seacoast,” he says. “I wanted to open a nice, formal restaurant that’s not stodgy.” Vesey, who also owns The Joinery (joineryrestaurant.com) in Newmarket, has added a decidedly un-stodgy twist: a gin bar, featuring 25-30 different gins.

Restaurant Week Portsmouth & the Seacoast More than 40 restaurants around the Seacoast join together twice a year for Restaurant Week Portsmouth & the Seacoast (goportsmouthnh.com) a delicious opportunity to enjoy the region’s culinary delights. Participating restaurants offer special three-course, prix fixe menus at low prices.

Portsmouth Eats Walk, talk, eat, repeat. That’s the premise behind Portsmouth Eats (portsmoutheats.com), a business offering tasting tours around the city. Whatever your preference, they offer it, from white tablecloth restaurants to area sweets shops and restaurants featured on local and national TV shows. There’s even an Access Portsmouth tour of restaurants accommodating visitors with disabilities. You’ll also learn some tasty facts about the Seacoast. HarborGuide 67

INSPIRED SHOPPING Bring Home a Piece of the Seacoast HarborGuide 103

Start with something special from the Portsmouth Historical Society Museum Shop (portsmouthhistory.org/gift-shop), located downtown at Discover Portsmouth. Shop Manager Cynthia Novotny says everything there reflects the mission of promoting the history, arts, and culture of the Seacoast region, including pieces by local artisans, locally commissioned notecards and tea towels, history books from the Portsmouth Marine Society, and unique handicrafts from The League of NH Craftsmen. Off Piste means “deviating from the expected,” and this shop on Congress Street certainly accomplishes that. Owner Mackenzie Dube says the items she carries aren’t easy to find, adding, “It’s stuff you probably won’t find on Amazon!” That includes screen-printed shirts and wine bags created locally, insulated coffee mugs with a map of Portsmouth, even a card game designed by “some kids from Dover” called I Can’t Even. Swing by Gus & Ruby Letterpress (gusandruby. com) on Congress Street for beautiful paper and printed products, plus a fun assortment of gifts like locally produced jams, exclusive Gus & Ruby candles, and organic-cotton baby clothes.

Alie Jewelers (aliejewelers.com) on Market Street has been a family-owned business since 1914, doing what they do best—selling fine jewelry, watches, and engagement rings, plus wedding rings to suit any bride’s taste. For the ultimate in recycling, Sea Bags (seabags. com) on Market Street gives new life to old sails by transforming sailboat canvas into cleverly decorated totes, duffels, wine bags, diaper bags, and much more in a variety of colorful stripes and prints. Kittery Trading Post (kitterytradingpost.com), just over the bridge in Kittery, Maine, has everything you could possibly need to enjoy outdoor experiences on the Seacoast—and beyond! Located at Foyes Corner in Rye, Summer House Furnishings (summerhousefurnishings.com) will help you furnish and accessorize your Seacoast home with distinctive pieces, from indoor/outdoor wicker to unique lamps, rugs, bedding, and fine art. A Market Street fixture, Kennedy Gallery & Custom Framing (kennedygalleryandframing. com) features fine art reflecting Seacoast themes, all from well-established local artists, as well as custom framing services delivered by a professional staff. Nahcotta (nahcotta.com) on Congress Street is part gallery, part gift boutique, part art supply store, all rolled into one inspired shopping experience. You’ll find quality fashion accessories at Puttin’ on the Glitz (puttinontheglitznh.com) on Market Street, including an eclectic collection of jewelry, scarves, and handbags. But where this store really shines is in its selection of hats for every occasion and season. Located on Pleasant Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, Serendipity

INSIDER SCOOP Sol Sunwear

(serendipitynh.com) is the place to shop for fun, trendy fashions, jewelry, and accessories from around the world. Browse through the offerings at Hazel Boutique (hazelportsmouth.com), tucked into Commercial Alley, and discover clothing and other goodies from more than 80 designers from around the world. Put a little spring in your step with something from City Shoes (clubboutiquecityshoes.com) in Market Square. You’ll find the perfect style for every activity under the Seacoast sun, whether a fashionable lunch or a formal wedding. From Portsmouth logo gear to sea glass jewelry, miniature tug boats, shanty artwork, and tide watch clocks, Tugboat Alley on Bow Street is a Seacoast adventure in shopping. Exeter Fine Crafts (exeterfinecrafts.com), on Water Street in Exeter, is a treasure trove of handcrafted art created by talented artisans from throughout New England. From one-of-a-kind jewelry and stained-glass pieces to fiber arts and Seacoast-inspired prints, this store is sure to appeal to art lovers. The extensive collection of artists’ studios at The Button Factory (buttonfactorystudios.com) on Islington Street will host its 33rd Annual Open Studios event on Saturday, December 7, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a preview Friday evening, the 6th, from 5-8 p.m. Dozens of tenant artists will showcase their studio work and be on hand to chat with visitors.

At an age when most teens are considering their first summer jobs, siblings Alexa and Kosta Mocklis decided to start a retail store. In 2017, at ages 17 and 14 respectively, they pooled their savings and opened Sol Sunwear (solsunwear.com), a seasonal retail sunglasses shop in downtown Portsmouth. They already had inside knowledge of the eyewear business (their father is a local eye doctor) and embraced the challenge of owning their own store. Sol Sunwear sells ophthalmic frames as well as sunglasses; brands include Maui Jim, Ray Ban and Costa del Mar.

Muse Lifestyle boutique Muse (museboutiquenh.com) reflects the eclectic tastes of its owner, Nicol Hotaling. Opened last year on Route 1 in Portsmouth, the boutique features a fun variety of merchandise in a spacious, industrialstyle space. “I try to find funky, unique gifts you can’t find elsewhere,” Hotaling says. You’ll discover Free People clothing and accessories, hand-crafted furniture, local art, pieces from India and Thailand, and much more.

Swag on Swasey Once a month through October, shoppers in downtown Exeter can browse antiques, collectibles and everything in between at Swag on Swasey (swagonswasey.com). A changing list of vendors from throughout New England sell artwork, vintage goods and re-purposed treasures outdoors on the town’s pretty Swasey Parkway, along the scenic Squamscott River.

SLEEP ON IT IN STYLE Boutique Hotels and Inns

HarborGuide 133

This page: Three Chimney's Inn; (R) The Sailmaker's House

Tuck in for the night at one of these intimate hotels or inns, each with a decidedly Seacoast flair.

The Sailmaker’s House (sailmakershouse. com), located on Court Street, is another newly renovated downtown Portsmouth option that combines traditional quality with stylish and modern details, according to owner Amanda McSharry. The boutique inn caters to the self-sufficient traveler; instead of keys, guests are assigned four-digit codes to open the front door and guest rooms. But not to worry, a team member is always on site to answer questions or offer up the perfect dining suggestion. The historic home, with its ten beautifully updated and furnished bedrooms and en suite bathrooms, still has the unique characteristics of an early 1800s house, from narrow stairways to slanted pine floors and original windows. Visit Water Street Inn (watersinn.com) in Kittery, Maine, and sample one of eight newly furnished guest rooms with period charm and enough modern amenities to make your stay ubercomfortable. For special occasions like a wedding, family reunion, or girls’ weekend getaway, rent the entire home for the ultimate in privacy. The Exeter Inn (theexeterinn.com) has been a mainstay of relaxation and fine dining on Exeter’s Front Street for decades. Tucked among stately HarborGuide 134

The Inn Downtown

trees, near Phillips Exeter Academy, the inn has 46 luxe rooms and suites with plush linens and flat-screen TVs, and one romantic suite even has a working fireplace. A collection of six separate lodges comprises the York Harbor Inn (yorkharborinn.com) in York, Maine. Its centerpiece is the Main Inn, with 22 luxury guest rooms, many with ocean- and beachview decks, fireplaces, and/or Jacuzzi tubs. Other beautiful, historic properties—including the Pet Friendly Inn—are sprinkled throughout York Harbor. At Stage Neck Inn (stageneck.com), 58 wellappointed guest rooms—some pet friendly—are just steps from the water and all the shopping and activities of York Harbor. The inn also offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools, coastal dining, and seasonal tennis on seaside clay courts. Conveniently located near I-95, the Port Inn (portinnportsmouth.com, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member) is a boutique hotel offering travel-friendly amenities like studios with kitchenettes and a healthy, complimentary breakfast. Rooms are finished with soothing colors, comfy beds, and touches of coastal décor.

According to Doug Palardy, owner of The Inn Downtown (inndowntown.com)—which occupies the former Blue Mermaid restaurant space on Deer Street and opens in July 2019—this brandnew, fully renovated “apart-hotel” brings a different kind of lodging experience to Portsmouth. Ten modern studio apartments are designed for nightly, weekly, or monthly stays, and each offers premium linens, contemporary décor, a fully equipped kitchen and a washer/dryer unit. Whether you need a home base while exploring the Seacoast or are looking for a comfortable place to stay while renovating or relocating, this is the perfect option.

Water Street Inn

Just steps from Market Square, The Hotel Portsmouth (thehotelportsmouth.com) on Court Street is located in a 138-year-old historic mansion and has 32 comfortable guest rooms finished with contemporary interiors and crisp white linens. Some even feature cozy alcove spaces with skylights. Public spaces like the sitting room offer fireplaces and conversation nooks. Ale House Inn (alehouseinn.com) on Bow Street is a little oasis of contemporary design behind the façade of a 130-year-old former brewery warehouse. Just ten rooms are tucked into unique, loft-like spaces with downtown views to die for. On a whimsical note, you can’t miss clever hints at the inn’s brewery past, like shelves holding historic ale bottles and in-room books on brewing. Three Chimneys Inn (threechimneysinn. com) in Durham has just 23 guest rooms divided between the original 1649 Homestead and the character-filled 1796 Carriage House. Each room has a distinct personality and showcases original millwork and exposed beams. Rounding out the inn’s distinctive New England décor are four-poster beds, wide-pine floors, and gas fireplaces. With so many lodging options on the Seacoast, there’s no reason not to get a good night’s sleep. [by Pat Chaudoin]

Stage Neck Inn

Just over the bridge from Portsmouth, in Kittery, ME, The Water Street Inn (waterstreetinn.com) offers a quiet escape from Portsmouth’s hustle-bustle. Owned by restaurateurs/innkeepers Jay and Amanda McSharry—they also own The Sailmaker’s House (sailmakershouse.com) in Portsmouth— the six-room boutique inn is tucked in a quiet neighborhood along the Piscataqua River. The quaint, red brick Victorian house is steps away from the vibrant Kittery Foreside.

Wentworth by the Sea Combining historic elegance with modern convenience, the award-winning Wentworth by the Sea (wentworth.com) has been a historic part of the Seacoast since it was built in 1874. One of New England’s grand hotels, the Wentworth hosted the signers, including President Theodore Roosevelt, of the 1905 Portsmouth Peace Treaty, ending the Russo-Japanese War (Roosevelt later received the Nobel Peace Prize). Over a century later, the hotel is welcoming guests for family vacations and romantic getaways. Amenities include two acclaimed restaurants, ocean views, a luxury spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center and much more.

C&J Bus Lines Concierge Service Need your car serviced while you’re away? C&J Bus Lines (ridecj.com) offers concierge “service while you travel” at its Portsmouth and Dover locations. In Portsmouth, drop your car off at Autoworks (auto-works.com) in Kittery, ME, and they’ll drive you to the C&J station or park your car in a designated Autoworks’ spot at C&J and they’ll service it while you travel and deliver it to C&J for your return (they’ll even provide a free loaner if necessary). Dupont’s Service Center (dupontservicecenter.com) offers a similar service for C&J travelers in Dover. HarborGuide 135
