CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Tonight we welcome the officials, players and supporters of Seaham Red Star to North Tyneside and The Daren Persson Stadium. We trust they enjoy their stay here before the journey back home down the A19.

Two battling performances have helped to wash away the FA Cup blues. Firstly at West Auckland where we dictated a lot of the play and thoroughly deserved the point. Then at home last Wednesday evening when we took on high flying Shildon. There's no doubt we were worthy victors.

Every man played his part. It was great to see young Paul Van score his first goal for the club and didn't he enjoy the moment.

I'm sure it wont be his last. A mention also for the other goal scorers in Connor Campbell and of course Gareth Bainbridge.

I'm reminded Gareth Only needs two goals to draw level with the great Don Winskill and only one more after that to become the clubs post war leading scorer.

Not quite sure how to put this but this could be the first of many games against Red Star this season thanks to the leagues newly conceived league cup.

Don's family are aware how close Gareth is getting and know all records are there to be broken so here's hoping it happens sooner than later. As you may know we are holding a managers talk in shortly so don't be shy please come along and air your views.

The full format escapes me but don't be afraid to ask one of our boffins in the media team. They claim to know everything about it.

If you have an issue come and get it off your chest. Nashy's very open and honest and will answer any question put to him.

Back to tonight and another tough game with points on offer for the winners. Let's hope it's ourselves.

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good evening as we welcome Seaham Red Star for a second consecutive home league match.

We have a perfect record so far at home in the league with excellent wins over Whickham and Shildon. Tonight will prove to be another test with Seaham having had a great result on Saturday to boost their confidence.

I honestly maintain that we have had the toughest start with these run of league games against established sides who have spent a lot of money.

Last time out, I thought we showed tremendous spirit and character to come from behind and defeat Shildon, who had been free-scoring previously.

We scored goals at great times and it was a delight to see three different scorers, including a first from youngster Paul Van-Zandvliet and then a classic breakaway for Gaz Bainbridge, who moves ever closer to the post war club record.

What made the win even more impressive was the fact we had to use a completely new centre back pairing with Paul New and Gary Ormston performing admirably.

The loss of skipper Adam Forster at half time was a blow but we adjusted and got on with the job.

Throw in the fact we changed our shape, that made the win that much more sweeter.

The players have responded to the fans and they have commented on their backing the last games.

It’s created a buzz and made the players hungry for more. Hopefully we can reproduce the form tonight.

Talented young left back who came through the Monkseaton Academy. A real gem of an attacking defender who earned Man of the Match on his debut.

Rhys joins the Robins after spending last season with Division Two side Washington as their captain. A combative defender with bags of potential, Rhys also played for Hebburn in their promotion from Division Two

Wayne is an experienced centre-half who joins the Robins from Division One rivals Ashington. He counts Gateshead, Blyth Spartans and Morpeth Town as his former clubs.

Kyle joins the Robins in the summer of 2019 from Bishop Auckland. A diminutive winger who has pace to burn, Kyle also chips in with the goals and assists.

Paul, a former defender for the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy, joins the Robins after a spell in Cornwall with St Blazey.

Previous to that, he spent four years with Darlington Railway Athletic.

Adam returns to the Robins from Blyth AFC. The talented midfielder also played for Blyth Spartans and will add quality to our team. He is also an FA Vase and Senior Cup winner.

Local lad Paul is another product of Tyne-Met College. His performances last year attracted the attention of Sheffield United. Paul’s box to box and powerful style will no doubt propel him to be a fans favourite in time.

David joined the Robins from Whitley Bay in 2018.

He played under Nashy during his time with the Bay and adds quality to our midfield. David has a serious amount of potential.

Connor returns to the Robins in the summer of 2019 after a seriously prolific spell with Division Two side Heaton Stannington. Formerly of Whitley Bay A, the extremely talented striker will look to build on an impressive season.

Ryan is a speedy attacker with a keen eye for goal.

He progressed through the ranks at AFC Farsley before returning North.

Scored the late winner in the 2016 Senior Cup Final against Blyth Spartans.

Scott joins the Robins after spending last season with Newcastle Benfield.

Marc and Woody were quick to snap up the attacker who is knows for his lightning speed and his ability to score a spectacular goal or two.

Gary rejoined the club early on during 2018/19 season, marking his debut with a wonder goal against Hebburn Town. A fan favourite who has led the line for the Robins time and time again. Will be looking to regain his fitness after nasty injury against Morpeth Town.

Three second half goals from Connor Campbell, Paul Van Zandvliet and Gareth Bainbridge handed the Robins a deserved 3-1 victory over Shildon AFC.

The Robins were not behind for long as in the 53rd minute, a low Chris McDonald cross was met by Campbell, who slotted the ball past the diving Bancroft.

After a goalless first half, the Robins fell behind early in the second after Zak Atkinson’s close range finish beat keeper Greg Purvis.

Campbell’s goal seemed to lift the Robins as in the 61st minute, a dangerous freekick taken by Cassidy needed to be tipped wide by the busy Shildon keeper.

However, After Campbell had levelled the score, Van Zandvliet rose highest to head a Nick Cassidy corner into the top of the Shildon net.

And with minutes to spare, Bainbridge was on hand to convert a Cunningham cross at the far post, sealing the points in the process.

Shildon began the game brightly and after only two minutes, Atkinson and Nathan Steel linked up well, only to see the ball swiftly cleared to safety.

Shortly afterwards, in the ninth minute, Cassidy came within inches of opening the scoring when his well struck freekick cannoned off the crossbar.

Straight up the other end and it was Atkinson who threatened to make the breakthrough, when his headed effort from a Robson cross flew wide.

However, as the weather began to deteriorate, the chances dried up as both teams struggled to deal with the wind and the rain.

It took until the 34th minute for the next chance for the hosts. Patton was causing the visiting fullbacks no end of trouble and after breaking past his marker, his effort on goal was saved

by Bancroft.

With five minutes left until the break, Campbell came close to snatching the lead, only for Bancroft to smother the ball.

As the wind and rain got worse, so did the Robins’ luck as captain Adam Forster was forced off during the break with a shoulder injury.

Shildon were the quicker to settle into the game and in the 47th minute, they were awarded a freekick in a dangerous area, following an Ormston challenge. Thankfully for the Robins, the chance was wasted.

However, in the 53rd minute, the visitors took the lead when Atkinson collected the ball at the far post from a free kick before finishing smartly past Purvis.

Having made his debut on Saturday against West Auckland, Van Zandvliet was looking to impress on his first appearance at the DPS and in the 62nd minute, he did just that.

After having a headed effort fly inches over the bar in the first half, he went one better when he connected with a pin-point Cassidy corner to thunder the ball past the helpless Bancroft; giving Shields the lead for the first time.

Lifted by a goal on his home debut, Van Zandvliet was at the centre of the action once again in the 68th minute, when he had another effort which drifted just the wrong side of the bar.

Conscious that one goal would bring them back into the game, Shildon kept pressing forwards and in the 72nd minute, a good flowing move resulted in Atkinson lofting a ball into the box.

He found the head of Nathan Steel but the attacker didn’t connect with the ball well and the effort was squandered.

Only minutes later, Atkinson should have really levelled the game when he beat the offside trap and was released through on goal. However, the in-form Purvis prevented the former Ashington attacker with a sensational block at the near post.

As the clock was running down, the visitors were beginning to throw more and more bodies forward in search of that all important equaliser.

In the 89th minute, this cost them the game.

Have battled for the ball in the centre of the pitch, Van Zandvliet and Patton exchanged passes before the former Bishop Auckland winger spotted substitute Cam Cunningham bursting through on goal. Unselfishly, the youngster squared the ball to Bainbridge who finished well, under pressure, to help lift the Robins to seventh in the Division One table.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League.

They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic.

The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0.

A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker.

(North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United.

The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed.

This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

SEAHAM RED STAR CLUB HISTORY Seaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs.

Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974.

After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season.

Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons.

Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League.

However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position.

Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status.

In 2012 the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. They brought the nucleolus of the side from their previous club and have added experience and quality into what may well be a team that could challenge for honours.

Steady improvement was noticed over the next four season’s and saw a 10 th place finish in 2012/13 and 4 th place in 2013/14, missing out on promotion by 1 point. The 2 nd division championship was won in 2014/15 and in 2015/16 season we finished a creditable 9 th place in a very tough First Division. After only 9 games of the 2016/17 season Collingwood left the club to go to Jarrow Roofing FC. Chris McCabe was promoted to manager and promptly brought in Paul Johnson as his co-manager.

A good run of results had the Star placed comfortably in the upper half of the table, however only one win from the last 12 games saw the Star end the season in 15 th spot. During that poor run McCabe resigned and Craig Lynch stepped us as player manager. At the end of a disappointing 2017/18 season, in which two managers resigned and numerous players decided to jump ship, Mark Collingwood was installed as manager for his second spell at the Star, he brought in Simon Johnson and ex Easington manager Paul Frame as his assistants along with Shaun McKenna and started his rebuilding programme in the summer of 2018. More changes saw Collingwood bring in specialist coaches in Ian Longstaffe and Michael Johnson ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
