A Note From your Pastor

Good Shepherd Family,

We’re a month away from the start of our cooperative parish, a month away from officially collaborating with Pleasant Hills and Ridgewood UMCs as we seek to be the church together. And I want to take the time to let you all know how excited I am about this work.

For any of you who have been around Methodist churches for some time, you might be familiar with multi-point charges where churches share a pastor but function independently of each other. This cooperative parish is not that. This is more than simply sharing pastors. This is seeking to become 1 parish in 3 churches, 1 church in 3 locations, with a shared mission and vision.

By coming together in this way, we will have the opportunity to combine resources – both financial and in the variety of gifts and passions our various members across the three churches bring. I am especially excited that we have received a large grant to help with pastoral support and to build shared ministries. This grant will take some of the financial burden we have been feeling as a church and allow us to do what we are, first and foremost called to do, be the church.

It is going to be a process. It will take time to get to know one another, to learn the different identities and stories, and to work together to discover where it is we are being called in this chapter of our journey with Christ.

What I want to encourage is this:

Engage in the opportunities to come together and get to know one another. Join us for our combined worship service and lunch on July 7th as we kick off this cooperative. Watch the parade with others on the 4th of July. Participate in at least one of the Listening Posts we will be offering as we seek to listen to one another. Come to our Parish-wide Picnic in August. The opportunities will continue to come.

Be patient. This is going to be a process. We are not going to have every answer to how this will look right away. It will take time. It will involve trying different things, some of which might not be the right fit for us but all of which will be a chance to learn, grow, and discover who we are being called to be.

Do not be afraid to ask questions if you have them.

And trust that the Spirit is moving in all of this!

I feel in my heart that the Spirit is at work and that this coming together will provide a way for us to deepen our impact in the church and in the world as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world (even as we are still learning and growing ourselves). I hope you feel it too!

Rev. Stephanie
