British Men’s Hairdresser of the Year Jamie Stevens Gives Frankie Cocozza the Chop Frankie Cocozza has trended on twitter after Jamie Stevens, twice British Men’s hairdresser of the Year and nominee for 2012 British Hairdresser of the Year, cut off his trademark long hair at his new salon in Kensington. Frankie went for the chop after saying, “I’m really nervous, but there’s only so many comments about having dirty, greasy hair you can take… I’ve had long hair since I was 12 and the time had come to change it – it’s summer, it’s hot and I’m ready for something new. I also wanted to raise money for the charity set up for my best friend Connor who died 2 months ago. I’m really pleased with how it looks and the response has been great.” Jamie, Global Ambassador for Matrix haircare said, “Everybody wanted me to cut Frankie’s hair when he was on The X Factor but it was a real part of him and when you’re going on stage in front of millions of people the last thing you need is your confidence stripped away. He’s a good looking boy though and I always thought he’d suit a more groomed style. I’ve done his hair and his eyebrows and he looks great.”

STANMORE MIDDLESEX On Stanmore Broadway, MG Hairdressing has been a constant for 35 years. Formerly Martin Gold, the salon was rebranded three years ago and has been turning heads ever since. Adam Harris, Managing Partner of MG Hairdressing spoke of the change, “We threw off our old staid image to embrace all the modern innovations of hairdressing in the 21st century. At the same time we made sure to keep hold of the values and passion that the company’s founder, Martin Gold, stood for, for almost 50 years. Our vision is to be the best and we have a dynamic, exciting, forward-thinking team all working towards the same goal.” Many salons are accused of offering nothing more than a conveyor belt service but a visit to MG Hairdressing couldn’t be more different. Adam feels his current team is the “best ever,” and this is proven in the 400 happy clients each week. MG Hairdressing has won several awards including, the Investors in People award, and is known as one of Wella Professionals top salons. MG Hairdressing has retained its clients successfully throughout the tough economic years and has even gained new ones. Adam says, “We believe that the clientele grows mainly by recommendation and word of mouth. Ever-conscious of the economic climate, we have a sliding scale of charges with different price levels to suit all pockets, meaning clients can feel comfortable to change stylists within the salon whilst still keeping our first class service.”

THE EVOLUTION OF MAN The trends and styles in men’s hairdressing tend to evolve a lot more slowly than women’s. Women’s hair fashion comes and goes just as quickly as the clothing. So far this year several male trends have seen themselves prominently featured in music videos, catwalks and street style.

Each and every trend has slowly evolved in 2012, some have stuck with their original roots and others have had a complete overhaul. Here we take a look at the five men’s styles we don’t see going anywhere for a while yet!

Brit-Rock Indie A favourite of Burberry Prorsum, the Brit-rock indie hairstyle is laid back and relaxed. Just make sure hair is swept forward

Slicked and Parted Classic through and through!

Apply small amounts of volume cream into the roots of rough dried hair and a volume mousse through the lengths and ends. Spray the hair with a texture spray; next create you parting, whether that is a deep side parting or straight down the middle. With a curling wand tong the hair in large sections from the mid lengths downwards leaving the top of the hair free. Once finished use a brush to gently brush out the waves to give it a soft natural finish. Fix with hairspray for extra hold.

Spray damp hair with a texture spray and a small amount of serum to stop frizz and give shine. Blow-dry the hair using a large round brush to pull the hair taught, and with a hairdryer face the nozzle downwards as you go for a smooth sleek finish. Continue until all the hair is dry. Finish with a shine spray to give that sleek glossy look.

Hi, I’m hoping you can give me some advice! My hair is long, past my shoulders, and is fine to medium in texture. It has a natural kink to it, not a nice one, so I straighten it every morning. Once straight my hair looks lovely and smooth and sleek but within half an hour it has kinked again! My hair will not stay straight! If it is humid or raining outside it goes completely crazy and kinks all over the place! I’m getting so frustrated! Please help, how can I keep my hair straight and stop it kinking? (I also use Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer on my hair every week to help with the condition as I use heat on it every day) Thank you, Angela, Somerset

Hi, The problem here is that it’s been straightened to much, and unfortunately that can break the hair and cause the kinks to fuzz up making the hair look fluffy. Irons, remember, if used everyday will without question cause damage and dry your hair out, regardless of what protection you use on it.

Dear Angela, Your problem is a common one! There are three options you could look at to try and tame your kinky hair. Firstly, you may have heard about the recent development of ‘Keratin Smoothing Treatments’ or ‘Brazilian Blow-dries’. These are non-chemical treatments that are designed to smooth the hair, eliminating frizz, and making styling easier. It lasts for about 3 months, and can greatly improve the condition of the hair as well. There has been some negative reaction to these treatments as some initial formulas contained high amounts of formaldehyde, so make sure you do your research, visit a reputable salon and question them on whether they use a formaldehyde-free product. Secondly, if your hair is really stubborn, a stronger and more permanent option would be to have it chemically straightened. There are various types of straightener on the market, some milder, some stronger, and with varying degrees of duration. Some are designed to make the hair poker-straight, or some just to relax and smooth the hair. Bear in mind though that these are chemical treatments and therefore will harm the condition of your hair, to some extent - just the same as if you permed your hair, or coloured it. Again, visit a reputable salon that ideally carries a number of different types of straightening product, and they should advise you according to the exact result and level of straightness you want to achieve. Last but not least - products! - if the two options above don’t appeal, you are going to have to rely on selecting and using the right products to try and extend the life of your hairstyle. Make sure you use a straightening blow-dry product, such as a smoothing blow-dry cream, on wet hair before drying. The new oils on the market, such as Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, do wonders for frizzy hair so it’s definitely worth investing in one of those. Layering products together, providing they are not too heavy, can help, and before straightening with irons use a heat -protecting spray that helps to produce super smooth results and has added humidity protection too. Finally, finish with an anti-humidity super-strong hairspray!” Good luck! Nick Malenko of Royston Blythe, Wolverhampton

I have hundreds of clients who are in the same situation here and they are stuck, if they don’t straighten it they don’t get the feel of smooth hair. Ironed hair is not a natural feeling, its man-made, forced with heat up to 230 degrees. Your hair is soft and finer in texture which will mean it just can’t take this amount of heat. Solution is to stop straightening it as much and ease your way into it, ultimately though you must try and embrace your texture and how it is, at least for most of your week, and maybe smooth your hair out for special occasions, not daily. Hope this helps! Nelson Brown of Browns, Dumfries

How can I keep my hair straight and stop it from kinking? 67

Hi, Three days ago I went to the hairdressers with a photo of the colour I wanted in my hair, which was a subtle dip-dye of honey blonde on my previously dyed dark blonde/light brown hair. Instead the hairdresser gave me unflattering blonde highlights which appear streaky and almost white at the roots, and are too thick in places. I’m really unhappy with them and was wondering if it was too soon to dye my hair all over with a dark blonde colour from the shops? Thank you, Kate, Colchester

Hi Kate, If you’re not happy with the result from the salon, and it’s not what you asked for, I would definitely give them a call with a view to going back and discussing your dissatisfaction with your colourist. Most good salons offer a 7-day guarantee, and so if you’re ever unhappy with a cut or a colour, let them know as soon as possible, initially by telephoning and then by a visit for a chat in person. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed by this; all good salons do appreciate that this does occasionally happen, and they would much rather you go back and give them the opportunity to correct it, rather than go elsewhere or attempt a home job. Hopefully they will be able to re-colour your hair to what you originally wanted, and in most cases, this should be done free of charge. If you don’t trust the colourist who did your hair, ask to have a chat to the manager or a more senior colourist. It may be possible to colour over the hair yourself, but of course you run the risk of this not turning out right, and you may then be landing yourself with a very expensive trip to another salon to correct your handiwork!

Sorry to hear you are not happy with your hair colour. Before you do anything drastic, think about whether you want to colour this at home or whether you feel comfortable enough to go back to the salon where you had it done and get them to re-colour it for you. It sounds to me that there was a miss-communication at the consultation stage of the appointment, this I think is often the most important part of a hair colourists job because we need to get this right before we mix up any colours. If I were you I would be weary of colouring it yourself to a dark blonde level, because if you choose the wrong shade the colour may grab in areas where it is lighter and possibly end up a khaki green over the almost white areas. John Clark at Brooks+Brooks, London

Good luck! Michelle Lawley at Royston Blythe Wolverhampton

I’ve had some unflattering highlights put through my hair, is it too soon for an all over colour?

HAIR & SKIN DOCTOR Hi, I trained in Hairdressing many years ago but had to give it up due to being allergic to hydrogen peroxide. 12 years ago I also suffered a severe allergic reaction to hair dye in which I had to stop colouring my hair, which was fine until I reached the age I am today, 44. I have recently started to notice grey hairs coming through, not a great deal but I would like to try colouring my hair again. I would like to try henna but after reading up various articles on the internet it seems getting the colour right is quite difficult. I would like to be able go to a professional hair colourist wherein they themselves could advise me of the right colour and also to apply the henna. Would you be able to offer some advice, is Henna the only solution to my problem or do you know of another way I could dye my hair?

I’m allergic to hair dye; can you recommend a more natural approach?

Many thanks, Anon, UK

Hi there, Over time, the way that our body reacts to hair dye can change, so I definitely think it’s worth performing patch tests with professional hair colourants to see if a reaction still occurs. Henna hair dye can be tricky as you say, and you will probably find it difficult to find a reputable salon that uses the old traditional type of Henna colours. Instead, there are now various types of organic and natural hair colours available in professional salons, so I would recommend going down this route. The best course of action would be to visit a salon that offers this type of hair colour, tell them your full history, and ask them to perform a patch test. If you experience a reaction, just try a different type of organic or ammonia-free colour, and keep going until you find one that doesn’t cause a reaction. Always get the salon to tell you specifically what colour they are testing on you, so you know what you’ve tried and what you haven’t! A permanent colour would produce better results in covering grey hair, but a semi-permanent uses a lower level of peroxide and therefore may be a better bet. L’Oreal produce a permanent ammonia-free colour called INOA, and Schwarzkopf manufacture an organic range called Essensity and an ammonia-free range aimed at sensitive scalps called Senea, so these would be a good start. Because you have experienced severe reactions in the past, make sure the patch test is done thoroughly; test a small area of skin first, as normal, and if that’s fine then it would be worth going back to the salon and testing it again over a larger area of skin to make absolutely sure. Get advice from your doctor as well on what do to if you experience any discomfort; I know people with sensitive skin who just take anti-histamine tablets before having their hair coloured, although we would never recommend this unless advised by your doctor. Hope you find a solution - good luck! Michelle Lawley at Royston Blythe Wolverhampton

Sorry to hear about your allergy to the chemicals in hair colour. At present there isn’t much in the way of professional colourants without p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) or Resorcinol. These are essential in the colouring process and are the main components of the dye. I can suggest that first you go and have a skin test at a salon to see if you are still very sensitive to colour, I have heard about a professional Schwarzkopf colour line called Senea that is super gentle and is designed for delicate skin. It is worth a try to see if that would possibly work for you. If that fails then maybe you could try using a vegetable colour or as we call it in the industry a true semipermanent colour, Chromative by L’Oreal Professionnel lasts for around 6-8 shampoos and has a good range of shades. But have a skin test first before you have the service. Henna is always an option but you have read correctly that it is quite a difficult colour to get right. If you want orange or vibrant red then I think it is a great product, however if you are looking for natural browns or blacks then be aware that even they could contain PPD. Lots of Henna is made in countries with less strict laws about what the manufacturers have to tell is in the ingredients. Pure natural henna should contain no PPD and be made of 100% Lawsonia Inermis (the Latin for henna). I don’t use henna at work and off the top of my head I don’t know of any salons or colourists that do. This is because once hair is coloured with henna then it cannot be bleached or lightened with regular hairdressing colourants. All sorts of complications arise, so you will have to do some research in your local area about salons or people that colour with it and go have an in depth consultation, strand test and skin test. Would love to hear how you get on, whatever you decide to do. John Clark at Brooks+Brooks, London

SKIN DOCTOR All the latest skincare advice from our expert Victoria Ammoscato

Hair: Ashley Gamble at Royston Blythe. Photography: Alex Styles

Hi Victoria, I was reading about you on the Good Salon Guide website and noticed you give some amazing skin advice. I’m 44 years old, never smoked and rarely drink alcohol, I guess I would say I’m pretty healthy and have always taken care of myself. I have been using a Vitamin C serum on my skin for many years now which has been great, yet I want something more as I get older. My pores are quite enlarged and my skin can sometimes be a bit oily yet dry in other places, I have been reading about Retinol lately and noticed the Medik8 Retinol 40. Would you recommend this product at all or is it too harsh for my skin type. I want something which will improve my skin tone, shrink pores and help anti-ageing yet don’t want anything too harsh. Thank you so much for your time, Emma, London

Dear Emma, Thank you for your question. Medik8 is a very good product range, I would not recommend starting with Retinol 40, instead I would suggest a course of Retinol 3TR to begin with and then progressing to Retinol 40 mixed with Hydr8 Night. The retinol must be used pm only and spf should be used daily as retinols cause sensitivity to UV. I would suggest using Vitamin C am and perhaps try the CE Tetra which is a stronger potency and then the retinol at night, I like to encourage usage of the retinol 1-2 times per wk to begin with and then increase to every other day for 2 weeks and every night after then, depending on skin type and any professional treatments recently received. If you experience excessive irritation or prolonged redness then change back to a lower frequency of application until your skin adjusts. Whilst the Retinol 3TR is milder it is still potent and this method ensures comfort. I hope this helps! If you have a clinic near you that offers Medik8 products and treatments it might be of benefit to visit them for a consultation and to guide you through your retinol course to ensure suitability and optimum results. If you need any further advice I am happy to offer it. Kind regards Victoria Ammoscato. Victoria Ammoscato at Victoria Ammoscato Micropigmentation & Beauty, Banbury

How can I improve my skin? Hi, I really want to improve my skin! I’ve got mild hyper pigmentation, broken capillaries around my nose and enlarged pores!!! What can I do to stop it from getting worse? Thank you Anon, Northern Ireland

Hi, To avoid it worsening I would suggest a good daily SPF (heliocare 30 or 50 is great for protection). To help with pigmentation, even skin tone, tighten pores and promote healthy collagen production, protect the skin using a vitamin C serum such as Medik8 C Tetra, this will also help with capillaries. Kind regards Victoria Victoria Ammoscato at Victoria Ammoscato Micropigmentation & Beauty

Hello Skin Doctors, What’s the best advice for dry skin on my face? After washing my face I put on a vitamin E moisturiser but after about 30 seconds of putting that on my skin is dry again and feels really tight? What is the best routine I can use to get rid of this tight dryness? Thank You, Anon, UK This sounds like you have a quite dry skin type, ensure that your hydration levels are kept up by regular intake of water, use a cleanser that is mild and moisturising so as not to irritate your skins barrier, also perhaps undertake some regular professional treatments to boost your skin and strengthen it, using a suitable oil may be helpful particularly overnight as this is when our skin takes the ultimate benefit, so also ensure that your night skincare routine is good. It is difficult to offer more specific advice without knowing more about your age, skin type, medical history and lifestyle but I will supply the following general advice for dryer skin types. Use of a hydrating serum penetrating deeper within the skin surface may be useful, particularly hyaluronic acid as this holds 100 times its own weight in water. Use of a lipid barrier in the form of a stronger face cream both day and night for nourishment of the skin without blocking it. Central heating and air conditioning aggravate and dry out skin so the use of a water spray such as Evian or Avene facial mist is very useful. Facial massage using a good premixed skin oil containing essential oils such lavender, geranium, sandalwood (ensure you have no allergies before using) vitamin e is an excellent nutrient for skin health particularly when it is dry but it seems that the one you are using is perhaps not strong enough for you at the current time. A healthy balanced diet is also helpful; Olive oil is good natural source of vitamin e, cod liver oil is also very good for skin suppleness but once again check that you have no allergies. If your skin is really excessively dry it may be advisable to visit your GP to eliminate any medical reason for this. I hope this helps. Kind regards Victoria Victoria Ammoscato at Victoria Ammoscato Micropigmentation & Beauty, Banbury
