New owner vows to cherish Tabac CAFÉ TABAC, one of Liverpool’s most enduring cultural institutions and a defining presence on Bold Street for over half a century, has begun a new chapter, joining the Ma Pub Group family.

Ma Pub Group - the independent Liverpool hospitality operator is behind Ma Boyle’s Alehouse and Eatery, Tempest on Tithebarn, Nova Scotia and the Newington Temple.

Opened in the seventies by Rita Lawrence and run as a fiercely independent family business, Café

Tabac quickly distinguished itself as a home for Liverpool’s creative vanguard. Through the 1980s it became a bohemian refuge for the city’s alternative scene, welcoming the likes of Holly Johnson, Pete Burns, Margi Clarke and Ian McCulloch.

A COMMUNITY book sharing box has been launched in the city offering people the chance to read for free.

The Little Book Stop is set up in front of the Museum of Liverpool on the waterfront.

Liverpool BID Company and National Museums Liverpool were chosen from hundreds who applied to install one of 90 Little Book Stops across the UK as part of publisher Penguin’s 90th anniversary.

The waterfront Little Book Stop is one of 18 across the North

West – and one of four more locally with stops in Edge Hill, Birkenhead, and Southport.

Each Little Book Stop has a steward appointed to maintain it – in Liverpool’s case Mark Morgans who is the BID’s lead Street Ranger – and they’ll run on a ‘give a book, take a book’ concept and promote book sharing.

Each book in the waterfront’s Book Stop has also been stickered with a QR code so anyone reading the book can enter their location, and the team can see how far each book travels.

Cocktails raise glass to love affair with Liverpool LIVERPOOL’S only 5-star hotel, Municipal Hotel & Spa, has launched a new cocktail menu.

Titled ‘A Love Letter to Liverpool’, the menu is a collaboration between the hotel’s Palm Court Bar Team and Anna Sebastian Hospitality, who are known for their work with major luxury hotel and resort groups including Fairmont and Raffles.

The menu features four new cocktails, each inspired by the city’s people and heritage.

Among them is The Municipal’s House Signature: ‘Made Up Mist’, a playful Scouse twist on the classic French 75.

Next on the menu is the Docklands Martini, followed by the Yellow Submarine, features ingredients such as Belvedere,

Mezcal, Yellow Chartreuse, Lemon, Chamomile, and Turmeric.

The final cocktail is titled ‘Boss Tha’, which is served in its very own postbox.

Annie Brown, General Manager of The Municipal Hotel commented, “Just like Liverpool, this menu is full of heart. It tells stories of Liverpool’s culturally rich past and present.”

Bringing art to the people for 20 years LIVERPOOL gallery and arts organisation dot-art is celebrating turning 20 years old in 2026.

Founder Lucy Byrne said: “Twenty years ago, we started with a simple belief: art should be for everyone. Today, supporting hundreds of artists and reaching

thousands of young people annually, we’re incredibly proud of the creative community we’ve built together.

Over the last two decades, dot-art has seen: 600 artists given long-term support; 21,000 school children engaged; 30,000 hours of

creative teaching delivered; 68,000 visitors to Liverpool Art Fair; 2300 artists shown at Liverpool Art Fair Lucy added: “Our 20th anniversary year will celebrate not just where we’ve been, but where Liverpool’s artists are going next.”

Culture Fund bringing creative vibrancy to city FOUR arts projects will receive a share of £30k worth of funding from Liverpool Business Improvement District’s Arts & Culture Fund.

Now in its fourth year, The Arts & Culture Fund was established to support smaller arts projects that help drive footfall, activity and animation within Liverpool city centre. The fund opens twice a year and submissions are selected by a panel.

The latest successful projects are; l A Svara radio ‘Public Service Announcement’ event supporting a

series of live public broadcasts and visual streams across the city centre. l Lantern Installations in city centre businesses from the Lantern Company. The project will work to lighten up the winter nights with a stunning window gallery trail. l Dot-art’s 14th annual schools project, engaging Year 5 and Year 9 students from local schools and providing a platform for children to display their artwork in the Walker Art Gallery and St George’s Hall. l A Pagoda Arts cross culture

programme of events for Chinese New Year 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse.

Battle of the batter LIVERPOOL’S Annual Pancake Race returns to the city this February with chefs from restaurants across the city taking part in a battle of life and batter.

The annual race is held in the gardens of Liverpool Parish Church and organised by Liverpool BID Company.

The race sees runners compete in three laps, having to add three toppings on each lap and completing three flips at two flipping stations.

Alongside bragging rights, the winner receives an engraved pancake pan, presented by the Rector of Liverpool.

Last year’s winner, Sebastian Wojton, who won wearing crocs, said: “I was delighted. It felt like running on home ground for Ma Boyles.”

flock Artist celebrates prize win Visitors to light show THE winner of the inaugural Liverpool Sculpture Prize was West Kirby artist Benjamin Stephenson.

His cylindrical sculpture, named Laminae, reflects humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world, and will be on display on the plinth overlooking Chapel Street outside Liverpool Parish Church until the summer.

The 35-year-old artist said he was “ecstatic” to win the prize.

ROYAL Albert Dock Liverpool won the Best Large Marketing Campaign of the Year award at the Revo Awards in London.

The destination won a Purple Apple award for “Borealis by Dan Acher at Royal Albert Dock Liverpool,” whereby an illusion of the Aurora Borealis was created above the dock using a large-scale light installation.

The success of the campaign was underlined by the installation’s public engagement, drawing over 106,000 visitors to the dock across a 10-day period, and with the Liverpool installation ranking number one globally for visitor numbers within 10 days compared to all other major cities where Borealis has been exhibited, including Sydney, London and Paris.

Eat, drink and be merry as new restaurants open LIVERPOOL is set to welcome two celebrated restaurant brands.

Dishoom’s Permit Room and Flat Iron are poised to open in the heart of the city with the promise of fresh flavours and vibrant atmospheres.

Opening in early March at No. 1 Dale Street (former RBS building), Dishoom’s Permit Room will offer an all-day bar-café experience inspired

by Bombay’s legendary permit rooms. Guests can look forward to signature cocktails, a menu packed with Dishoom favourites, and a lively setting filled with music and local collaborations.

To celebrate the launch, diners can enjoy 50% off food during the soft launch in late February, with both bookings and walk-ins welcome.

PARLIAMENT Square Coffee has unveiled plans for a major expansion with the opening of a new 3,500 sq ft flagship site on Cook Street in early 2026.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Christopher and Hayley Commerford, the brand launched its first site on Parliament Street in June 2023.

Former chef Christopher, 44, from West Derby, and Hayley, 40, built Parliament Square Coffee from a plucky start-up into a respected and much-loved brand known for its specialty coffee, brunch-offerings and snacks.

In 2024, the couple opened their second location on Clarence Street, which also became home to the Parliament Square Academy for aspiring baristas.

Hayley said: “This new store brings together everything our brand represents, from exceptional coffee and British-inspired food to a dedicated meeting space and expanded corporate catering.”

Christopher added: “We are now backed by global investors. They recognise our potential.”

Faces I remember - Wirral artist Joseph Venning and his Mathew Street musical-connection mural

A MURAL has been unveiled on Mathew Street celebrating 100 figures from music who have shaped Liverpool’s cultural heritage, past, present and future.

Beatles to OMD, The Teardrop Explodes to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the mural is designed and created by artist Joe Venning and is funded by SP Energy Networks and The Beatles Story via The Beatles Legacy Group, and facilitated by Liverpool Business Improvement District.

Wirral based artist Joe has already created one mural in Liverpool, a 40m wall at ACC Liverpool celebrating the city’s sporting, artistic, comedic and dramatic talent.

The musicians included in the mural include Sir Paul McCartney, Ian Broudie, Andy

McCluskey and Holly Johnson. Bands include Red Rum Club, CamelPhat, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Wombats, Dead or Alive, The Icicle Works and The Swinging Blue Jeans.

Bill Addy is CEO of Liverpool Business Improvement District said: “Mathew Street’s musical heritage is one of the reasons tourists visit from across the world.

“The Cavern Quarter is such a distinctive and vital part of our city, the artworks throughout it are part of a visual storytelling, showcasing why the spirit of this place is such a passionate one.”

Artist Joe said: “Whilst painting I started seeing connections between the acts I hadn’t noticed before.”

Record already set for half marathon THIS year’s BTR Liverpool Half Marathon has sold out in record time at 12,000 entries.

Event date is Sunday 15 March 2026.

The day also features the BTR 10 Mile Road Race, which sold out two weeks ago at 500 entries.

First staged in 1994, it is one of the longest established premier road races in the region, and is a real highlight in the North West running calendar.

The event boosts the local economy through hospitality and tourism sectors across race weekend, including bars, restaurants, hotels, retail, and attractions.

Alan Rothwell, BTR Race Director, said: “The Liverpool Half Marathon is a real highlight in the race calendar – not just in the North West but now in the country. People don’t just see it as a race, it’s an experience. A chance to

see Liverpool through running, take in the sights, and embrace the welcoming atmosphere – pulling on their trainers for 13.1 miles of making memories in Liverpool.”

More Magic For Everton EVERTON’S Hill Dickinson Stadium will host the 2026 Betfred Super League Magic Weekend on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July.

The return of Rugby League to Hill Dickinson Stadium follows the outstanding success of this month’s Ashes Test - the first major non-football event at the venue - when a sell-out crowd of 52,106 delivered a landmark moment for the Club and the city region.

Super League’s annual celebration will now take place in July and feature a full round of fixtures across the Saturday and Sunday, including the return of three classic derby encounters which were a highlight of the inaugural Magic Weekend in 2007.

The schedule features a full roster of marquee fixtures, including reigning champions Hull KR against city rivals Hull

League of their own - the Hill Dickinson will host the Rugby League’s Magic Weekend.

Quiztopia has all the answers A NEW immersive quiz experience has opened its doors on Dale Street.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Barbara Murray, was amongst the first to test her knowledge at Quiztopia, which was opened in December.

The venue is fitted out with podiums, buzzers and lights giving “a full-on game show experience.”

Samir Patel from Quiztopia said: “This new concept is easy to play and we’re thrilled Liverpool’s first citizen was the first to step up to the podium.

“With a wide range of subjects to choose from, you don’t have to be an expert quizzer and can even create your own quiz!

“It’s great fun and we look forward to welcoming families, friends and work colleagues to our new immersive experience.”

There’s enough room for 40 people at Quiztopia, which is open 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm.

Hundreds of new homes CONTRACTOR and developer Vermont, alongside Peel Waters, X1 Developments, and Starlight Investments, has completed construction of the 278-home Lighthaus Build-to-Rent development in Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters.

The 31-storey development, which offers a mix of apartments, includes a sky lounge with panoramic views, a fitness centre, co-working spaces, 24hour concierge service, and a residents’ lounge.

The project has also created vocational pathways for residents during construction, including permanent positions, apprenticeship schemes, and work experience placements through the City of Liverpool Construction Academy.

Free courses for businesses HUNDREDS of businesses in Liverpool have access to online training courses through SEEDL to help improve the skills and experience of their staff. The innovative learning hub is supported by Liverpool Business Improvement District and is free for all BID levy payers.

The courses come via live, interactive webinars, and include subjects like communications, customer service, leadership and wellbeing.

Yellow Monday was created to help bring positivity to what is typically seen as the most difficult day of the year, when post-Christmas blues and dreary January weather can dampen spirits.
