Andrew Corbin is an evangelist who preaches throughout the surrounding area of Northwest Georgia. He accepted God’s call to preach in April 2017. Andrew, his wife Amber, and son, Reed attend Grace Baptist Church in Dalton, GA. About The Author R omans 9:1-3: “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.”
The Apostle Paul writes a few verses in Romans chapter 9 that Christians nowadays need to pay close attention to. One thing that I believe Christians in general have fallen short in doing is loving each other and the lost. For a church body to be able to carry out the work that the Lord wants, the people inside the church must love one another. Love promotes unity, unity promotes liberty, and with liberty, we will be able to go out and reach the lost sinners out in the world. Keep in mind what Jude has to say about love. (Jude 1:22: “And of some have compassion, making a difference.”) The compassion we have for the world will make a difference when trying to reach them.
Paul writes Romans 9 and gives us a prime example of the love we need to have as Christians. Many times, we hear others say we need to love sinners just as much as Christ loved us. Often, we just brush that notion off, but we really need to think about how much Jesus Christ really loved and continues to love us.
Paul says in verse 2 that he has great heaviness and continual sorrow in his heart. This is not to say that he went around sad all the time, but the amount of compassion he had for the lost made him be sorrowful. As Christians, we need to have enough love for the lost to be sorrowful for them, to shed tears on their behalf, and to never give up on them. (Psalm 126:5-6: “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”) If you want a harvest, there has to be water. If you want Spiritual fruit, there has to be tears.
Paul goes on to say in verse 3 that if it would make a difference, he would die and go to Hell just so his brethren could be saved. Paul knew that his sacrifice couldn’t make a difference, but it goes to show how compassionate he was for his lost family and friends.
Let this be a reminder for us to ask the Lord to make our hearts tender for our lost family and friends. If we are really concerned for the lost, we need to have the love that Paul has in this text. While we cannot save their souls, we can be a light and witness to them so maybe they will come to know Christ as their personal Savior.
