Planning a wedding is a lot of work. That’s why working together can make all the difference By Jacqueline Kovacs

ou’ve no doubt heard the expression that a wedding is “the bride’s day,” but that old cliché is leaving out an equally important person: the groom. When it comes to wedding planning, grooms are often unfortunately pushed aside. That, says Bettie Bradley, author of A Major Mistake. “A lot has changed in the last 30 years,” says Bradley. “These days, 51 percent of couples pay for their own wedding. Another large percentage divides the cost three ways — the couple and both sets of parents.” So today’s grooms can and should have a larger role to play in wedding plans. Here are some of Bradley’s suggestions to get the guys more involved.

For some big wedding decisions, it definitely takes two. Anything that is a large budget item, for example, should be decided by both the bride and the groom, says Bradley. “You need to decide together where the service and reception will be,” she says. You also need to set the budget together, decide who will pay for what. “You also need to agree on the guest list,” she adds. Same with the menu — what will you be serving? Will it be a buffet, sit-down or cocktail style with passed hors d’oeuvres. How much budget will you allocate for that? Plus, think about whether you want a “men’s area” at your reception. “Many modern couples are adding a men’s corner to the reception with such things as beer or brandy,” explains Bradley, “things men tend to like more than women do.” It’s a little touch that can be a nice nod to the fact that weddings are a shared experience.

Any large-budget wedding item, such as the venues for the ceremony and reception, as well as the menu, should be decided by both of you.
