Honoring the fallen Last weekend, Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew once again joined scores of fellow riders for the annual Police Unity Tour, a 250-mile ride in honor of all law enforcement officers who have died while protecting their communities. Though the ride was made even more difficult this year by the oppressive heat, Agnew said he was grateful for the support of his own department, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the Circuit Court staff, the County Administration staff and Goochland Elementary Students, who lined the streets to show their support for the passing riders (inset). “It really means a lot to all of us,” Agnew said.

Legion Post once again passing out poppies in honor of the fallen Contributed report

“In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row…” is a line from In Flanders Fields, by Lt. Col. John McCrae. It doesn’t matter that this poem was written in 1915 during World War I, the sentiment and sacrifice of our Military remains the same today. Memorial Day is the day Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who met tragic ends during times of war. The red poppy has become the sym-

bol or remembrance, and May 25 has been designated as National Poppy Day. The members of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary will be passing out poppies in May and accepting donations. The full 100 percent of the donations collected are used to support our active duty military, veterans and their families. Look for volunteers in Goochland, at the Oilville Exxon, at the WaWa by Car Max, at Cabela’s and at

Courthouse Green during the Memorial Day Ceremony on May 28. The Ceremony Starts at 10 a.m. with a Children’s Parade around the Green. For more information, contact a veteran or stop by the Legion Hall on the third Tuesday evening of the month. The Legion Hall is located at 3386 River Road in Goochland. Further information can be found at www. facebook.com/auxiliar y215goochland.org or www. auxiliary215goochlandva.org/.

Extension program could help get lawn into tip-top shape Contributed report

The Goochland and Powhatan Extension offices are offering a lawn evaluation and best practices program called Smart Lawns. As part of the program, Master Gardener volunteers will schedule a visit to participnats’ lawns to measure the total lawn area, evaluate the existing lawn and take a single soil sample. Based on the results of the soil analysis and the onsite evaluation, homeowners will then be provided with a lawn maintenance and nutrient application plan to help achieve a healthy and attractive lawn. Anyone wishing to enroll in this program is urged to contact or the Goochland or Powhatan Extension office to obtain an enrollment form and a home owner lawn pre-

survey. Applications will be accepted until Friday, May 18. Celebrating

A CENTURY

Two Goochland residents mark 100th birthday festivities with family and friends

With humor, grace, Powell inspires family By Roslyn Ryan Editor

G

oochland resident dent Corine Powell ell marked her 100th birthday last Sunday, celebrating with the family and friends she continues to inspire. “She’s just amazing to me,” e’s said Josephine Collins, Corine’s niece, explaining that her aunt has always been the kind of woman capable of overcoming obstacles that would derail others. Now into her eleventh decade,

Powell continues to live in the home she bought for herself decades ago after retiring from a career in sales m and moving back to her native G Goochland from N New York. A And while a b bad accident 1 years ago 10 led her to give up driving, she continu continues to read the newspaper from front to back every day, maintain a busy social life, and catch every game played by her beloved Washington Nationals

baseball team. When it comes to reaching the century mark, Powell didn’t need to look far to find examples: both her mother and grandmother celebrated that milestone birthday. Her sense of humor, it seems, also remains very much intact. Asked on the eve of her birthday what it felt like to be 100 years old, she quipped that she wasn’t sure—she’d never done it before. To Collins, Powell is a shining example of how to age with grace. “To know her is to love her,” Collins said. “I always tell her I want to be just like her when I grow up.”

Over the course of her 100 years, Maidens resident Helen Fleming has had many roles, including daughter, nd sister, mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother. So it wasn’t surprising that,, when a crowd of 250 revelers at her recent 100th birthday celebration went to sing Happy Birthday to her, they weren’t entirely sure which name to use in the song. as Over the years, Fleming has ty answered to everything from “Betty Crocker”— thanks to her passion and talent for cooking — to “Grandma Sugar Cake,” a name bestowed by one of her 11 grandchildren. No matter what they might call her, those who know Fleming describe

her in very much the same glowing way: a woman of strong faith, integrity, dignity and humility, and one they have been honored to know. “Mother has always been a great source of strength, and a sounding f us,” said board for Vern Vernon Fleming, on of Helen’s one th three sons, d during her b birthday cele ebration at Quioccasin Bap Baptist Church on Ap April 7. The seventh of 12 children, Josephine “Helen” Fleming was born and raised in Goochland. It was also here that she raised her four children — sons Edward, Ralph and Vernon, and daughter Sherrill

— with her husband, William “Ed” Fleming. Among her most notable traits, say family members, is her steadfast determination. When she gives her word, they say, you can take it to the bank. Though she has made one or two small concessions to age over the years — she doesn’t garden quite as much, and will occasionally use a cane to help her get around — Helen remains a dedicated member of St. Mark church and a force in the kitchen (she still cooks a huge meal for family and visitors each and every Sunday after church). “You just can’t stop her,” said Lannie Martin, who organized the simple but elegant celebration in honor of Helen’s 100th birthday. “She’s an amazing woman.”

When it comes to knowledge, loss is puzzling

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The other day, for some reason now totally lost to me, I found myself taking a brief inventory of all the things I don’t know. More specifically, I found myself listing all of the things that I see, touch or hear about every single day that I do not understand the inner workings of at all. The list, examined in its entirety, is embarrassingly long. While I have a basic understanding of what makes my car go, I could not begin to tell you how my alarm clock keeps time or what kind of voodoo allows my wireless mouse and my laptop to communicate. I cannot find the Republic of Georgia on a map, fully explain Bitcoin, or tell you how my refrigerator stays cold (only that it has something to do with Freon, which I think is a gas and I know is expensive). There are a lot of things in the margins, like the NASDAQ and Boyle’s Law and the House of Burgesses, that I can at least put in categories —financial stuff, physics stuff, obsolete government stuff — but I couldn’t be trusted to give you much detail on any of them. I am not sure how this happened — I feel like I used to be much smarter. When I was between 17 and 24, in fact, I’m pretty sure I knew everything. I made it through college just fine, and have managed to hold down several jobs over the years that all required at least basic comprehension skills. And yet, the other day I realized that if you told me that magic elves living in my Smartphone were what made it work, All I can figure is that there must be, somewhere in the back of my head, a tiny pinhole leak where information has been slowly escaping for years. Sadly, as I can still recite most song lyrics from the ‘90s with stunning accuracy, the important facts must be the see Knowledge > page 7

hen we have neighbors who are military veterans, how much time do we spend considering the sacrifices that they made for our country? Most of us give little to zero thought about it. We have our own lives to lead, and we as Americans are seemingly too busy to form friendly relationships anymore. We have so many of our own reasons not to engage that we may miss out on someone interesting. Luckily, a very kind and decent fellow lives in the little neighborhood of Village Hill, which is near the Goochland Courthouse. William G. “Bill” Painter is retired, and since he’s had time to help his neighbors as a Neighborhood Association President and a volunteer in his grandson’s elementary school, his kindness and decency has been noticed and appreciated by his neighbors. I was fortunate to get to know Bill, and soon found out that he was in Vietnam as a Marine, and that he may have been in country concurrently with my deceased uncle Steve, who was there for the first major Marine offensive in 1965 called Operation Starlight. Bill was a bit more willing than my Uncle, and stayed for a second tour “in country.” What struck me once I had learned more about Bill was that this kind, unassuming guy was really one tough son of a gun. He slugged it out with the communist forces for most of the two years he was there. It got me thinking about our fellow citizens, neighbors and veterans who have also had incredible experiences, warriors mustersee Painter > page 7

Whatever the reason, it is a privilege to know this Virginia gentleman who stepped up to fight at a time when cowardice and selfishness were running rampant in American society. Bill was born in the late 1940s and grew up in Chesterfield. There were a lot of World War II Veterans around, and they were admired as men and women who had met their obligations as Americans. Despite the presence of these veterans, Bill did not give the military much thought as a kid. But, when a Marine recruiter showed up at George Wythe High School and told Bill that he could get him together with his older brother who was already a Marine, Bill decided that the Marine Corps would be a good idea. Bill’s older brother was enjoying his enlistment floating around the Mediterranean Sea, which sounded good to Bill. Bill’s mom was not keen on the idea — it was January of 1965, and Vietnam was starting to loom in the consciousness of Americans. Bill’s dad, on the other hand, already had a son serving, and he told Bill to go for it. Bill’s parents had to sign for him, as he was only 17, so they went with him to the recruiter’s office on Broad Street in downtown Richmond. Bill was set to report to Boot Camp-Parris Island in May, 1965. Three months later, Bill was in Camp Pendleton in California attached to the 9th Engineer Battalion. He and his comrades were loaded onto the USS Thomaston-LSD 28, berthed at the Naval Base in San Diego. The 24-day passage across the Pacific to Vietnam included a stop at Yokosuka, Japan. From Japan the ship brought Bill to the South China Sea. Bill arrived in Vietnam on August 24, 1965. Other than some leave time, Bill would spend the next two years in Vietnam. He would be in combat most of that time. After he finished his first tour of 13 months, he headed back to Chesterfield for 30 days of leave. After the leave Bill reported to Camp Lejeune, where he was

Each day the names of those Marines killed in combat over in Vietnam would be posted, and Bill would feel guilt when he recognized names of fallen warriors. It was a sense of duty mingled with the guilt that compelled him to return to the war zone. When a first sergeant came in and told them that they would get 15 extra days of leave if they would volunteer to go back to Vietnam, Bill took him up on the offer. After 15 days more of leave back in Chesterfield, Bill reported to Camp Pendleton, in California.

Bill Painter didn’t really get a welcome home until he went to the Veterans Center on Fitzhugh Avenue. He was told that it would be in his best interest to keep his Vietnam service private, so as not to bring the disdain of the antiwar crowd down on him. Bill found himself once again in combat, sometimes with ROK (Republic of Korea) Marines, and sometimes supporting Australian Bushmaster Units. Eventually Bill would be up near Khe Sanh at a place called Ca Lu. He and his team of Engineers put in 16,000 mines. Bill would spend the rest of his second tour near Khe Sanh. Each night the North Vietnamese Army would attempt to sneak into the Marine positions. Bill would have to fight each night with grenades in order to avoid the signature of a muzzle flash. Bill remembers receiving the order of “Fix Bayonets!” This order followed the receipt of some intelligence that the enemy would be attempting to

overrun their base. At Khe Sanh, Bill would be doing his turn on watch, looking out across the open ground towards where he knew the enemy would come from. This would usually be at night, and an artillery unit to the rear of Bill would be sending up flares. These flares would float slowly down, lighting up the perimeter. At some point, where there had been nothing before, black dots would appear: it was the hunkered-down enemy making their way to the Marine positions. Once they were close enough, all hell would break loose. This type of constant fighting drove some people crazy. Bill said after Vietnam, Marines talked of others being lumped into either the “alive” or “dead” category. Bill says he would add a third category — those who went crazy — explaining that this Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was not fully understood until years later. When Bill got home from the war, he eventually discharged at the El Toro Airbase in California, went home to Virginia, found work, and started to come to grips with the war. He didn’t really get a welcome home until he went to the Veterans Center on Fitzhugh Avenue. He was told that it would be in his best interest to keep his Vietnam service private, so as not to bring the disdain of the anti-war crowd down on him. Bill learned eventually what the war had done to him. He returned with an amoebic infection that destroyed his liver, then developed diabetes. Now Bill has cancer, which may be from the exposure to Agent Orange, which has taken hold in his lymph nodes. Bill recalls landing by helicopter near Khe Sanh. The hill appeared to have been cleared in advance of their coming. Bill was told that Agent Orange, a strong defoliant, had been dropped. This area is where Bill and his fellow Marines spent months digging in the dirt. Bill is a realist — he knows that his days are numbered. He has been a good family man to his wife Ann, and has taken her grandson Cole under his wing since Cole was born. Those of us who are Bill’s neighbors will miss him. Bill is just one of those good people that you’re lucky enough to spend a little time with, and even luckier if you know just what they have been through. Thank you, Bill, for being a wonderful neighbor and a courageous U.S. Marine.

May 17, 2018

Need for mother’s love never fades As I entered the gates at Fort Lee, I had a feeling of uncertainty, the type of feeling you get when you are preparing to do something that you really don’t want to do. I was interviewing a soldier who was retiring after a storied career as a medic in the U.S. Army, and I anticipated a long narrative of battlefield memories and stories of survival. And this guy had seen all of those things, but he was much too humble to mention any of them as we talked of his many tours of duty. He had seen men die in his arms, and suffered through some unthinkable horrors in unspeakable situations. “When they know they are not going to make it, they call for their mothers,” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “Their mother?” I replied with some surprise. He explained that in that moment of total despair and surrender, battle-hardened heroes call for the one person that had cared for and healed them so many times in the past. That interview took place

more than two decades ago when I worked at The Hopewell News, but the softspoken medic’s words have stuck with me. They resound with more intensity each year as Mother’s Day approaches, and we offer thanks and appreciation for the many sacrifices made by the ones who gave birth to us. My mother was forced into a dual role early in my life. When my father died at a young age, leaving two small children and a stay-at homemom behind, she must have felt like the weight of the world had descended on her. She didn’t shrink in the face of such an enormous challenge, and never shied from her mission to raise us the way my father would have wanted. She was more familiar with the needs of my sister, and attending dance recitals or school plays to see her perform seemed much more comfortable than attending a Boy Scout function or Little League game with me. I can recall many functions where boys showed up with their fathers, and I arrived accompanied by my mother. Even more challenging

was fielding questions from a young boy searching for answers in a world that seemed confusing after my father died. Queries most times reserved for man-to-man discussions were routine questions, and the answers most guys got from their fathers, I received from my mother. She also provided that swift kick in the rear end that boys often need, often tempered with the soothing shoulder that only a mother can provide. On her final day on this earth, I hurried to the bakery to get my sister a birthday cake on my way to the hospital. Somehow, every minute seemed important, and the long line of customers moved more slowly than usual. When I arrived at my mother’s bedside, my sister rushed up to me and said, “She’s been asking for you.” I grasped her hand as she tried to speak. “Don’t try to talk, just relax.” Now, I’ve often wondered what those final words might have been, but I have a confident hunch it might have been a final lesson in life, one thing maybe she had forgotten to instill in all those years of

single parenting. With enormous effort, she took her other hand and placed it on top of mine, and looked at me and smiled. Minutes later, she was gone. As I sat in that hospital room beside her bed long after she had left this earth, I looked at the woman who had been both mother and father to me and thought of the sacrifices, the selfless hours, the uncomfortable moments associated with raising a teenage boy and the infinite amount of patience displayed by this amazing mother who taught me how to be a man. The words of that medic have never left me, and, somehow, it seems totally fitting that the first face in a man’s life also is the last one he seeks when the end comes. It’s also the reason we pay homage to the women who raised us on this important day of recognition. Simply put, it’s called a Mother’s Love. And when those last minutes of life come to us all, we’ll probably be no different than those brave men on the battlefield and call out for our mothers. Chances are, she’ll be there.

My Advice to You This week, the Gazette continues our series in which we ask county residents to share the best piece of advice they have ever been given.

Del. John McGuire As a new member in the Virginia House of Delegates, I find m myself o often rrelying o on the best advice I have ever bbeen given: listen twice as much as you speak. As representatives, we were elected to solve problems. We cannot solve a problem if we don’t know all the sides of the problem. Too often we hear that “politicians don’t get anything

done.” As it turns out, this doesn’t have to be true. When I heard that the owners of the Goochland Drive-in Theater were having issues related to advertising on the blue highway signs on I-64, we took the time to listen instead of telling them it can’t be done. By bringing together a team from VDOT, the County, the Division of Legislative Services, and the owners, a seemingly small issue has ended up having a huge impact for these small business owners. They had been told no for 8 years. It only took one conversation where everyone really listened to get them a “yes”. Hearing and listening are not the same thing. When we listen more than we speak, we are given a real opportunity to improve the lives of those around us.

Wirsing leads the way for Triathlon Club By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

While competing in triathlons is not something that a high school athlete can participate in through the Virginia High School League, Goochland High School has come through in providing an outlet for these athletes to shine. The Goochland Triathlon Club has found a niche for these athletes to have a chance to compete wearing their

school colors in a sport that many of them wouldn’t have considered beforehand. And, in typical Goochland athletics fashion, given the chance to compete and go for the top prize, the Bulldogs excelled at a recent triathlon. At the Richmond Triathlon Club Sprint Triathlon on April 28, Goochland’s Anna Kate Wirsing won her 16-to19 age group with a time of 1:08.32. “It went exceptionally well, especially given how much

time the kids had to practice for the event,” club head Ed Boyle said. “We started back in February with workouts on bikes. I had a lot more help this year from Coach Wirsing and Coach McCaskill, especially on the cycling part,” he added. In preparation for the event, Boyle reached out to the Richmond Triathlon Club to see if they could assist the athletes in any way in terms of equipment needs for the

event. The club, and some of its sponsors, came through in a big way. “I had told the club that we had 16 kids that had signed up for the club and some of them were doing a triathlon in the coming weeks and some of them didn’t have decent bikes,” Boyle said. “The response from RTC was pretty amazing. I had people donate six trainers, four bicycles, all kinds of clothing, shoes and helmets,”

he said. Sponsors also came through to provide the uniforms that the Bulldogs wore during the race. “We had sponsors step forward who basically paid for the uniforms,” Boyle said. “People donated over $1,200 to offset the cost of the uniforms. They looked really sharp and raced really strong. It kept the momentum going as some of the kids are already talking about their next triathlon.”

The race was held at the Collegiate Aquatic Center, the same venue that hosts many of the area swim meets for teams like Goochland. The race consisted of a 400 meter swim, a 20K on a bike and a 5K run. In the Novice Female category, Meghan Wright finished fourth with a 1:24.40. In the Male Group 16-to19, Caleb McCaskill finished fourth with a 1:05.56, with see Bulldogs>10

Roundup: Benedictine baseball earns No. 2 seed By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The playoffs have arrived for the Benedictine Cadets baseball team. The Cadets earned the No. 2 seed in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division I state baseball tournament, which began on May 15. St. Christopher’s is the top seed in the state tournament. The Saints fell to the Cadets at the Deep Run Spring Break Tournament, but the Saints defeated the Cadets the second time the team’s faced in a benefit game at RF&P Park. The Cadets faced No. 7 Norfolk Academy on May 16 in the state quarterfinals. If the Cadets advanced, they will face the winner of Flint Hill and Paul VI on May 18 in the semifinals at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights. The state final is scheduled for May 19 at Shepherd Stadium. Goochland’s baseball team went extra innings against Randolph-Henry on May 10 and came out on top in a 6-5 final. Zac Harlow was 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Wyatt Murray was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while Austin Rose was 1 for 4 with

2 RBIs. John King was 3 for 4 with a run scored for Goochland. The two teams combined for 23 hits in the game. The Bulldogs also defeated Bluestone 14-0 in a five-inning game on May 8. John King was 2 for 3 with three runs and 3 RBIs for the Bulldogs. Wyatt Murray was 2 for 2 with two runs and 3 RBIs, while Joey Ramsbottom was 2 for 2 with one run scored and 3 RBIs. The Goochland defense allowed just one Bluestone hit.

SOFTBALL On May 10, Goochland’s softball team defeated Randolph-Henry 5-1. Ellie Spencer was 3 for 3 in the win over the Statesmen, while Cherish Sims was 1 for 1 with a run and an RBI. On May 8, the Bulldogs rolled past Bluestone 14-5. Keisha Braxton was 5 for 5 with three runs and 6 RBIs to lead the Bulldogs. McKenzie Reams was 4 for 5 with three runs and 3 RBIs, while Carleigh Gilstrap was 3 for 5 with two runs scored.

discipline, but strategically applying yourself in the way you’re racing. That’s really cool to see in these kids.” Boyle said that the seniors who are in the club have expressed to him that they are going to look for triathlon clubs at their respective colleges, such as at Virginia Tech and James Madison University. “They’ve tried a new sport, liked it, and want to continue with it,” he said. “That’s pretty

cool.” Boyle said that the competition was “pretty stiff ” among the age groups in which the Bulldogs athletes were competing, with athletes in the event that train yearround for triathlons. “I think the kids were surprised how fast some of their peers are at their sport,” he said. The club has been something that has been embraced

by Goochland athletic director Bryan Gordon, and Boyle said it rounds out the offerings for the athletic department. The Richmond Triathlon Club allowed all the Bulldogs to race from the same starting corral and their bikes were racked together, so they could stay together. Boyle said the club is ooking forward to the next event for the Bulldogs to participate in.
