School Board votes employee bonus By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Full-time Goochland school employees will take home an extra $600 this month and part-timers (those who work 15-29 hours weekly) $300 after the School Board unanimously approved a one-time bonus plan at last week’s workshop meeting. In addition, the School Board

voted 3-2 to restore seven days to the contracts of 61 12-month employees. They will now work 260 days, rather than the 253 that had been allocated them in a cost-saving measure in the current budget. And school employees hired after July 1 will receive a 5.75 percent raise to compensate for the addisee Bonus > page 4

Owner Jonathan Nadolski said a fresh injection of capital along with community support has enabled him to reopen his butcher shop in Goochland Courthouse. “We had a huge outpouring of support from the community,” said Nadolski Monday. Nadolksi’s Butcher Shop closed Nov. 12, after almost three years in business at its 2913 River Road location. He plans to reopen Thursday, Dec. 6. “The community support has been overwhelming. Customers from far and near came to express that they didn’t want to see us go. We didn’t want to close; we enjoy doing what we do. We are so glad to have the opportunity to reopen,” said Nadolski. To move forward, the shop created a sister corporation called Nadolski’s Sustainable Meat Company that is centered on raising livestock and vertically integrating its operation, explained Nadolski, calling it a “cutting edge idea.” But the retail operation is also critical, he said. “It’s invaluable as a brand.” Now the company will

attempt to combine its retail and wholesale operation, rather than converting to a 100 percent wholesale operation, as was the intent when the closing was announced. The business will focus on supplying sustainable, local meat and poultry, as well as handmade artisanal charcuterie, seafood, cheese, wine, beer and gourmet grocery items. “We will now own livestock in the field, will be better able to monitor quality control, and cre-

ate economies of scale that will allow us to compete at a more competitive level,” Nadolski said. By educating the business team on how to process, market and utilize whole carcasses and being able to track production of animals from farm to table, Nadolski’s will reintroduce prepared meals from Tuesday– Thursday. During the holiday season, the shop will be open seven days a week. “Overcoming the challenges of a depressed economy has been

difficult, but we want to move forward. Eating well can certainly benefit your health, sanity and way of life,” Nadolski added.

Richmond Symphony Executive Director Davic J. L. Fisk listens as Associate Conductor Erin R. Freeman explains the Messiah Sing-A-Long performance planned for Sunday afternoon at Goochland High School to the Goochland Rotary last Friday. “Imagine you are living in 1742,” said Freeman, as she outlined the history of Handel’s Messiah, which was first performed in Dublin, Ireland as a fund raiser for an orphanage. “It was a piece that was specifically written to raise money for charity,” she said. This Sunday’s performance will encourage attendees to sing along with the 60 chorus members, some of whom will mingle with the crowd. Freeman said she will teach them what they need to know to take part. For tickets and more information on the event go to the Rotary web site at www.goochlandrotary.com.

Kilduff continued from > page 1 ment of six, is just getting his feet wet, learning the system he is charged with maintaining and expanding as the county grows. He’ll be working on The Park at Saddle Creek and doing testing for the new Goodwill store in Centerville and concentrating on operations and maintenance, he said. With 130 miles of water and sewer pipe, seven sewer pump stations and three elevated water storage tanks, Kilduff’s plate is full. But things are looking up with the recent hire of Utility Engineer Matt Longshore, which just leaves him one person down. A vacant inspector position is also being advertised. With 1,200 customers, Kilduff will be glad when he has a full roster on board. “My job is to see that my guys are not stressed out,” he answered, when asked if he ever had to pitch in and get out into the field himself to fill in. Kilduff, 35, grew up all over the country,

he said, since his father worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Florida, Kansas, New York and Maryland were some of his stopping points. He graduated from Frostburg State University in Maryland with a major in Environmental Analysis and Planning. Commenting on the two recent water main breaks in pipe belonging to the Department of Corrections, Kilduff said that infrastructure condition is always a concern. “The nation’s infrastructure is old,” he said, adding that he is still familiarizing himself with the Goochland system. On his to do list is a Water and Sewer Master Plan, said Kilduff. “Utilities are key for development,” he said, adding that he has made preliminary contact with several engineering firms to begin the process of writing the plan. Kilduff, his wife and 16-month old son Bodi are staying with his in-laws in Amelia waiting to sell their home in N.C., he said. Then he’ll be looking to put down roots in Goochland.

A suspect in several burglaries in Goochland, Fluvanna and Louisa counties has been arrested, said Lt. Chuck Henley of the Goochland Sheriff’s Office last Friday. Jason Edward Rhoten, 34, was taken into custody Nov. 26 without incident at his residence in Louisa by Louisa County deputies. Henley said the Goochland Sheriff’s Office began working on the case after an Oct. 25 burglary in Goochland. Henley said Goochland began working with other counties when they noted that the method of entry in several burglaries was similar. Arrested earlier was Olivia Epps, 35, of the same Louisa address where Rhoten was taken into custody. Henley said electronics and computer gear were taken in the Goochland burglaries, while firearms and jewelry were stolen in other counties. “Two different citizens gave us license plates and descriptions,” said Henley. A tip from a Louisa citizen led to Rhoten’s arrest in Goochland. He is being held without bond in the Central Virginia Regional Jail. Epps i s being held in the Henrico County Jail. Henley praised the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the assistance of citizens that aided in the apprehension of Rhoten and Epps.

But before the vote on the bonuses and pay raise for new employees was taken, members Michael E. Payne, District 1 and W. Kevin Hazzard, District 2, expressed misgivings about restoring the seven days to 12-month workers, preferring to use the $410,000 at hand entirely for bonuses. “I’m concerned if we reinstate it, are we going to have to take it away, that would be just

crazy,” said Payne of the sevenday addition to the work year of the 12-month employees. “From our perspective this money is a windfall,” said Hazzard, voicing concern that there was no guarantee that money would be available in the next budget to retain the days. But School Board Vice Chairman John Wright, District 5, said he thought the money would be there next year to keep them at 260 days. “I’m stepping out on faith that the money will be there,’ he said. The School Board was initially presented with an array of options that did not include

the 5.75 percent raise for new hires. But new superintendent James Lane, who officially starts work Dec. 12, presented a new option that incorporated the raise for new hires and reduced the size of the onetime bonuses to compensate for the $74,000 cost. That School Board approved that option 4-1, with Payne dissenting “The end objective was the same for all Board members - taking care of our employees and trying to provide a meaningful bonus,” wrote School Board Chairperson Elizabeth A. Hardy in an email to the Gazette after the meeting.

New program will help out of work youth find employment

GOALS Outreach Coordinator Joshua Harris talks to the Goochland School Board about the program at last week’s workshop meeting.

Open house set for Dec. 19 By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

Come Jan. 2, Goochland County youth will have an opportunity to enhance their career options through a program called the G.O.A.L.S. Institute, which stands for Gaining Occupational and Leadership Skills. The program targets outof-school youth from 17-21 and is authorized by the federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998, according to Stacy M. Davis, site coordinator for the G.O.A.L.S. Institute in Goochland. “So out of school means youth who have a high school diploma or a GED or [who are] seeking to obtain a GED, Davis said. G.O.A.L.S. staff members help participants obtain work experience through on the job training and also assist them in gaining the certification needed to obtain employment, Davis said. “So we’re basically building them up so they can get their career options, she added.

“We do resume building and at the end we want to‌educate them ‌so they can basically get that job.â€? In addition to Goochland, Davis supervises G.O.A.L.S. offices in Chesterfield and Powhatan counties. The program also is available in the city of Richmond, Charles City County, Hanover County, New Kent County and Henrico County, which serves as the fiscal agent, Davis said. “So each location has youth development specialists, which are career coaches for our participants,â€? she added. “We have assessment specialists who do testing ‌.â€? The Goochland office will be located at 2938 River Road West in the county’s Parks and Recreation Academy Building. The office will be open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and plans are in the works for the office to be open a second day each week as well, Davis said. “We have a computer lab with six computers and we’ll have a classroom where we’ll be holding a workshop, so the computer lab will be open to the public to use for job search and any other activity,â€? she said. “We have work-

books, GED books and jobrelated information for the community to access in that shared space in that Parks and Recreation room. Joshua Harris is an outreach coordinator and youth development specialist for the G.O.A.L.S. program, which he said involves “spreading the word, trying to build those partnerships and inform people about the services we have. Harris is enthusiastic about the program and what it has to offer. “I think this is a great pro-

gram and great opportunity for those that are seeking to enhance their lives as far as professionalism and education wise, he said. “So as much as I can do, I’ll be spreading the word and letting them know that there’s a program in Goochland. We’re new, but we definitely have something for the residents in that area. The program is free for participants and it works, Harris said. “I’ve seen people come in and actually they’ll start not knowing what they actually want to do as far as their career

path, he said. “There’s been a lot of situations that people will come through our workforce centers and were trying to obtain a GED or some type of credential. We’ve been able to assist in that. So I definitely think as far as our experience in the Henrico area and the Richmond area we just feel that it will be a great fit in the Goochland area as well. Davis said she is excited and eager for the program to begin in Goochland.

“I’m really trying to venture out, reach out to those clients who really need us, she said. “So I know it’s a need for it so I’m just ready to go out and get the participants who are in need of our services. Harris was like-minded. “I’m ecstatic, he said. “Words cannot express my gratitude for having the opportunity to work with the residents of Goochland and see GOALS > page 11

Bolling drops out A political bombshell hit Virginia Republicans last week, when Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced he was suspending his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor in next year’s election. No sooner was the word out then folks began speculating that Bolling might run as an Independent, a possibility bolstered by his statement that he would not endorse Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in a contest against likely Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe. Initial reactions of regret and support for the lieutenant governor quickly turned to chastisement from the state party chair, Pat Mullins, who, evidently reacting to Bolling’s remarks about Cuccinelli’s electability and fitness to occupy the Governor’s Mansion, expressed disappointment and asked Bolling to help bring the party together. It’s hard times for the GOP all over, with defeat in the national elections, where Republicans not only failed to win the White House but also gave up seats in the Senate and even lost seats in the House, the last bastion of GOP control. Now President Barack Obama is badgering Speaker of the House John Boehner with demagoguery about raising taxes without offering any spending cuts in return and it appears he’s getting away with it, setting up Republicans to be the fall guys if we drive over the daily lamented “fiscal cliff.” It’s against this backdrop that

Editorial & Business Office: 6400 Mechanicsville Tnpk. Mechanicsville, VA 23111 Mailing Address: P.O. Box 1118 Mechanicsville, VA 23111 Phone – (804) 746-1235 Toll free – (877) 888-0449 Fax – (804) 730-0476

Bolling’s withdrawal took place, one that has the GOP trying to decide if the way back to power is to broaden the tent and compromise more, as one presumes Bolling might have been willing to do, or go more conservative, the path Cuccinelli is widely thought to favor. One thing’s for sure and Bolling mentioned this in his initial statement, a convention battle would have been highly divisive and likely to give lots of ammo to the Democrats to use against whoever prevailed. But the question remains: How does the GOP reconstitute itself in a nation where the majority of voters appear unable to comprehend basic reality, such as the follies of continual deficit spending and the idea that government ought to provide whatever the masses need, rather than creating conditions in which they are able to provide for themselves? In such an environment, Bolling and Cuccinelli are really on the same side of the argument. Having conceded the GOP nomination to the Attorney General, Bolling should help his party make its case. How best to make the case for limited government and personal responsibility remains to be determined but the state and the nation badly need to hear it and a nasty spat between two Virginia GOP figures can only take away from that effort. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Planning Commission vote a sham The vote by six members of the Planning Commission on Orapax at it’s last meeting was, in my opinion, nothing more than a sham They completely ignored the near-by residents who didn’t have a noise problem with Orapax. The Planning Commission ordered another sound testing even though they knew what the outcome was going to be. The testing had already been done in the past. The six members accepted an attorney’s presentation representing unnamed opposition and opposition from outside Goochland County. There were signs in opposition along the following miles of highway. Measured from Orapax intersection with Route 6, east three to four miles, north two to three miles and west four to five miles to within a mile and a half of Route 45 The question is, how would anyone know that a gun they heard go off came from Orapax? The six members must believe that this is a fact. Orapax had to certify a sound

test, but no test was offered for the above, nor any certification that home values would go down. Some of the opposition believes that they have the right to make those of us that have been here for years and years, even generations, shut down our noise just because they have moved into a area If you are a farmer or business owner, gun enthusiast or hunter, dog owner or kennel owner, sawmill owner and power saw owner, just to name a few, you had better start to take interest in what is going down at the courthouse. One of the best things you can give an anti is a noise ordinance. A supervisor at an earlier meeting this year has already asked the county attorney about his progress with a noise ordinance. Some of the previous supervisors targeted Orapax when they put in the conditional use permit, knowing good and well what would happen. Another example the county can target your zoning. They will change your zoning then when you go down to get your kennel license the county will tell you that you have too many dogs for your zoning. They would

have put the restrictions in earlier. What you are witnessing in the above is also suburban influence. Do you want this to happen to your county? I would suggest that you have a long talk with your supervisor if you care about the way the county is headed and tell him to fix the mess created by the previous supervisors. You could be the next one out. Floyd F. Smith Goochland

Wouldn’t have moved if range had been here There are 90 homes in Holland Hills. I believe it safe to say that most of those who originally moved here were drawn to the attractive homes, the relative quiet of a rural setting, and a neighborhood with spacious lots, good schools nearby, and adequate shopping. I am guessing they did not buy a home here so they could hunt wildlife in their back yard. When these homes were originally sold they appraised see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from > page 6 at more than $500,000 each, an investment of $45 million, resulting in a sizeable tax gain for the County. To most of us this will likely be the largest investment we make in our lifetimes. I can say, without hesitation, I would not have moved to this part of the county had the clay shooting range been in operation then. Future residential development in the county, or the lack thereof, should be factored in when considering the CUP request. Homeowners or real estate representatives, trying to show and sell a home located within hearing distance of a shooting range, will have a difficult time convincing a prospective buyer that they will get accustomed to the constant repetitive sound of gunfire. tive psychological effects of repetitive sound. It was correctly stated that Mr. Dykers has property rights including the legal right to do with his property as he wishes. However, if the exercise of that right causes something to happen that infringes on the rights of more than 150 other property owners, by possibly reducing their property value or if it increases the difficulty encountered when one wants to sell one of the homes that belongs to one of the majority, then an egregious wrong has been allowed to occur. I am bothered when I consider that a group of non-residents to Goochland County, who pay no taxes to the county, without allegiance to the welfare of the county, will come here and get their enjoyment shooting at clay pigeons all day, then return home to resume their lifestyle in the peace and quiet of their own environment.

Goochland publisher opens bookstore in Richmond Contributed Report

Wayne Dementi of Goochland and Steve Barnett of Short Pump have opened a book store in Richmond. Dementi’s Books of Richmond is located at 7019A Three Chopt Road behind Starbucks in the Village Shopping Center in Richmond’s West End. This bookstore has exclusive author signings through Dec. 31. All authors are based in Richmond with featured authors from Goochland including Richard and Kathy Verlander, Robin Williams, Aynsley Fisher and Sandy Fisher. “Nowhere in Richmond is there a book shop that focuses on just Richmond and their authors,” said Dementi. The new bookstore is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

proposed and denied for very good reasons that apply even more today. Excessive and repetitious noise that would be injurious to the use and enjoyment of other property in the immediate vicinity and the certain adverse effect on property values in the general district were cited as real issues then. It was also cited that the shooting range at the correctional facility provided proof that the noise produced from a firing range was detrimental and that similar facilities will have an adverse impact on the quiet enjoyment, potential safety and real property values of land and people within a considerable distance of such a site. This is not what we and I am sure many other county

residents came here for. Please use common sense and deny this proposal once and for all. Allowing this now would only open the door for more of this sort of thing in the future. We don’t believe this in in the best interest of our community.

agency. Even with a full time position as a Louisa County Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, Senator Garrett carved out hours to go to bat for me in Richmond. While Ms. Lascolette took the time to push through the mire and keep Mr. Garrett informed. I am grateful for their help. Senator Garrett has taken to heart his pledge to serve Virginia constituents. He is clear thinking, direct, and well spoken with an economy of words. He gives due diligence to each matter before him and sees it to conclusion. We are fortunate to have such an able man represent us in the State Senate and very lucky to have this role model in the public eye.

A gem in our own backyard

Last week I took an unexpected trip to the emergency room. In May, our neighbor had a medical emergency and chose to go to West Creek Emergency Center located in West Creek just off Rt. 288. Our neighbor had great praise for the care he received, so I elected to go there too, rather than continue on to Richmond. It may have been one of my most brilliant decisions of 2012. The staff was superior and the facilities state of the art. I was treated immediately and with compassion, concern, and expert medical Laura Keaton Morrison attention. There was no part of my Lynchburg

visit that was not outstanding--from the moment I walked into West Creek Emergency Center to the time I left some five hours later. In fact, the attention continued the next day when a staff member called my husband to see how I was doing. That call was followed later in the week by a card signed by all the staff on duty the night I was admitted. This emergency center, affiliated with Henrico Doctors Hospital, is a gem right here in our own backyard. Please support them! Margie Farquhar Richmond

Childrens’ Engineering GFCFS annual breakfast challenges young students draws more than 250 Contributed Report

with student-made alligators, children were given the charge of working with a partner to construct a bridge over the river with Duplo blocks. Students were informed that the bridge needed to go all the way across the river. Each team was given an equal number of Duplo blocks to use in their bridge construction. Once the bridges were completed, the students counted the total number of blocks each bridge used and determined which teams used

the most and the least number of blocks. This hands-on experience was an excellent culminating activity for a unit on math concepts, fairy tales, social studies topics, and teamwork. Children’s Engineering is not designed to make every child an engineer, but there are “engineering solutions to challenges. Students are engaged and having so much fun while learning.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services staff was honored to host the third annual Building Bridges of Hope Fundraising Breakfast. Over 250 supporters and potential supporters gathered at Hope Church to enjoy a morning filled with eye-opening client testimonials, a true reality video, and inspirational talks by GFCFS Executive Director, Sally Graham, and John Ogle of National Public Radio. Volunteer table captains brought friends to learn more about the organizations impact on this community. It was a morning to remember. Over $150,000 in donations and five-year pledges was raised to support GFCFS programs, including stocking the Food Pantry

We all know children love to build, create, tear down, start over, and have fun! This fall, county elementary schools have begun implementation of “Children’s Engineering. This program engages students in hands-on, problembased learning where they apply learned knowledge as they “engineer solutions to challenges their teachers give them. The “challenge is designed by the teacher and often involves a book the students have read or a unit they are studying. The challenge may involve creating, designing, building, or experimenting, while the kids are having fun. Teacher representatives from each school and grade level have been involved in a series of Children’s Engineering classes. These classes will continue through the spring. After each session teachers are asked to utilize the skills learned in a classroom project with their students. One recent example of classroom implementation took place across a kindergarten team that involved a cross-curricular approach to learning. Students were working to develop pre-literacy skills in conjunction with the classic fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. In math, students were studying the terms “more and “less and practicing application through real world examples. In Social Studies, the weekly focus was on maps, land, and water. The team tied all three subject areas together to create a challenge that engaged students through Children’s Engineering. Using a paper river filled

Harden 50th anniversary On October 27, 2012 Deacon and Minister Robert L. and Joyce A. Harden celebrated 50 years of marriage. The Harden’s have been lifelong residents of Goochland County, where they are faithful members and supporters of Ebenezer Baptist Church and Life Changing Ministries International respectively. The center of their existence has been their family, friends and the Goochland community for many years. They are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Vickie Harden Cooley (James) and Pastor Karen Elizabeth Harden. They now find much joy in playing an active role in lives of their grandchildren, Rhavin Cooley and Cephas Harden. Both retired, the Hardens are active members of their community and work tirelessly to support others around them. On behalf of the Harden Family they would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt words and deeds of support. They are eternally grateful to a merciful Savior, their famPhoto courtesy of Mabry Photography ily and friends who continue Joyce A. and Robert L. Bulldogs get second shot at once in a lifetime moment By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

FISHERSVILLE- Although life sometimes offers second chances, a shot at a high school state championship is usually a once in a lifetime opportunity. Last year, the undefeated Goochland Bulldogs made it all the way to the Division 2 state football finals. That dream ended on a cold, windy night in Salem when the Bulldogs came up short against Gretna. This Saturday the team returns to Salem for a shot at redemption. The 13-2 Bulldogs will face Essex in a 4:30 p.m. contest for the state championship at Salem City Stadium. For many players, it’s a second chance to make a dream come true. Many members of this year’s Goochland squad suffered through the disappointing end to last year’s spectacular season. They are part of a group of players who this year held steady focus on the prize. While the Bulldogs may not have the star power of last year’s squad that featured two

GHS shuts out Wilson Memorial 35-0 in state semis By Billy Fellin Richmond Times Dispatch

FISHERSVILLE- After their win against King William last week, Goochland coach Joe Fowler said that his team’s identity was about the running game. On Saturday in the VHSL Division 2 semifinals at Wilson Memorial, though, Goochland’s running game was largely held in check and held out of the end zone. The passing game and defense, however, were more than happy to score touchdowns as Goochland advanced to the state championship game, shutting the Hornets out 35-0.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity to reach the pinnacle of the season,” Fowler said. “That’s what we strive for every year. Coming into this season, we had a lot of young kids and I don’t know if many people thought we could do this. We’re proud of the opportunity.” One of the young kids that suited up for the Bulldogs is freshman quarterback Reid Chenault, who completed only three of six passes for 108 yards, but two of those throws were for touchdowns, including an 80-yard strike to Mitchell Brice. “It was crazy,” he said. “I didn’t expect to do that much. To come out after one score,

we were feeling good and that score put us over the top.” Both defenses were able to keep each team’s rushing attack in check, but Goochland’s defense was able to get pressure on Wilson Memorial quarterback Brandon Gochenour, coming up with sacks, knockdowns and rushed decisions at key times on either third or fourth down to end drives. The Bulldog defense killed any small amount of momentum that Wilson Memorial were able to cultivate. Goochland did not allow a single completed pass from Gochenour to his a Hornet receiver the entire game. He did, however, complete

a pass to Goochland’s Connor Saunders, who made a one handed grab and ran it 80yards for a score. Nathan Mattox also returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Bulldogs (12-2) defense. “The ball bounced our way a couple times,” Fowler said. “The fumble bounced right into our kids’ hands. The ball went right through their kids’ hands and into ours on the interception. It’s a testament to our kids’ character and work ethic.” The path to the state title game has been the same as last season for Goochland. Defeat King William, then defeat Wilson Memorial. However,

Fowler hopes that the state title game goes differently this season, after falling 21-17 to Gretna last season. The Bulldogs will face Essex in Salem, a team that Fowler admits they aren’t familiar with. “We don’t know a thing about Essex,” he said. “Except that everyone says they are unbeatable. We’ll find out next week.” For Chenault, though, reaching the state title game in his first season is something special. “It’s unbelievable,” he said. “To go to (the state title game) my freshman year, it’s been a dream of mine for years.”

Lady Bulldogs off to disappointing 1-2 start By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Fluvanna spoiled the home opener for the Goochland girls’ basketball team last week with a 46-22 thumping. The Flucos opened the contest with four consecutive 3point shots and the Bulldogs couldn’t buy a basket. Due to a combination of turnovers and poor shooting, Goochland didn’t score its first points until there were three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. “I’m really disappointed with the way we came out and played tonight,” said Coach Sarah Voyack. “Our bright spot was rebounding, but we didn’t shoot the ball well, didn’t shoot free throws well and had 27 turnovers.” But there was something else that bothered the coach

Bulldogs continued from >page 15 Jordan feels this group of players has mastered the team concept. “They don’t have any really stud stick out players like we had with DJ Coles or John Hicks, but they know their roles and play very well as a unit,” Jordan said. “And, they love what they do, just like our championship team did.” For junior linebacker Connor Saunders, the second trip means another shot at a win. “We need to stay focused this week on our business,” he said. “There is more pressure and more intensity surrounding this game, but we’ve been before so we should be good.” Senior linebacker Scott Pearce is also ready for another shot at a title, and said this team won’t make the same mistakes as last year’s squad in its preparation.

even more. “They stopped playing,” Voyack said. Late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs drew close at 25-20 and had several opportunities to cut the deficit even further, but the Flucos’ Kiara Childress exploded for eight fourth quarter points. The Flucos then turned up the heat with 19 fourth quarter points to put the game away. The Bulldogs scored only two. Voyack said she had some indicators that her team wasn’t ready to play. “We had some rough practices leading up to the game. I was hoping we would work things out, but apparently, we didn’t.” On paper, it seemed Goochland’s experienced starters would challenge the Flucos predominantly sophomore lineup led by senior Ashleigh Harris. “We shot poorly and I think

that carried over to the rest of our game,” Voyack said. Fluvanna coach Chad White also had concerns about the Bulldogs’ experienced lineup,

“Last year, we went in undefeated and this attitude that we couldn’t be stopped,” Pearce said. “It didn’t turn out that way. “This year, we have a different mentality and we are ready to take it home this year,” Pearce said. For senior receiver and linebacker Nathan Adams, this year’s trip is all business. “We just want to go back and win

it this time,” he said. “Going to the state championship and losing last year has been a driving force this year. We’re ready this time.” The team’s return to the finals was hard for Coach Joe Fowler to imagine after the Goochland dropped tough losses to Fork Union and Monticello early in the season. “Going into the season I don’t’ think anyone expected

and was pleased with the way his young team reacted. “We are a young team with ton of sophomores and a couple of freshmen,” White said. “We us to be here,” Fowler said. “I’m really proud of the way the kids responded to adversity early in the season. I don’t think we were ranked in the top 10 in the state at any point in the season, but we are one of the last two standing.” Fowler noted there are differences between this year’s team and last, but many team members are heading back to Salem for the second time. “Last year we were a little flashier, even though some of these kids were part of that flash,” Fowler said. “This year, we’re a little bit more blue collar. We grind it our—maybe a little stronger, a little bigger than last year’s squad.” Fowler is hesitant to carry those comparisons too far as the team prepares for a second chance at a state title. “It’s hard to compare them, but I’m proud of both teams,” he said. “Hopefully, this team can finish what we weren’t able to finish last year.”

were up against a senior laden team tonight and we came out and executed our game plan.” Even though White’s youth served the Flucos well, it was Harris who led the attack. “She’s our leader. It all begins with her. She’s the glue that holds us together,” White said. “When she plays well, we play well.” The coach also recognized Childress’ 14-point effort. “We ask a lot of her and she’s beginning to respond. We need her to score and she did that tonight.” The Flucos (1-1) host the Bulldogs this week, but White is taking them one game at a time. Voyack said it’s back to the practice court for the Bulldogs. “It all begins at practice,” she said. “They have to want it and learn to practice hard. If you work hard at practice, then you work hard in the game.”

The Bulldogs fared little better when they returned to action on Friday in the Dale E. Travis Invitational at Trinity Episcopal. Goochland suffered a 58-39 loss to Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (3-0) in their tournament opener. Contributed Report

Students and families of Goochland Cotillion donated over $800 for the Goochland County Christmas Mother Program at the fourth annual Holly Ball held at Adams International School Saturday evening, December 1. “This gift comes at a time when Goochland County needs it most,” stated Heidi Hall, Goochland

Christmas Mother 2012, “as we have a record number of applicants this year.” Goochland Cotillion’s Holly Ball took place at Adams International School, located on Broad Street Road in Maidens. Parents, and an occasional grandparent, filled the room as students demonstrated what they had been learning about social dance with instructor Lynn Irwin. The cotillion, which originat-

ed in September 2009, offers an opportunity for students to learn ballroom dancing, while emphasizing etiquette, life skills, and respect for self and others. Local residents, Lynn Irwin, Margaret Reynolds and

Tamra Adams direct the program. Goochland Cotillion also provides an opportunity to build community among students who are homeschooled with students who attend Goochland County and Greater-

Richmond area schools: Goochland Elementary, Randolph Elementary, Goochland Middle, Salem Christian, St. Catherine’s, South Anna Elementary, Moody Middle, and Adams International School.

Fresh local food still available during the winter months

Healthy locally grown food is available year-round.

By Roslyn Ryan Powhatan Today Editor

Now that the weather has grown chilly and local farmers markets have packed up for the season, many residents have probably

resigned themselves to foraging the chain grocery store aisles until spring. For those residents, Powhatan’s Becky Lillywhite has just one question: Why? Lillywhite is the manager of Local Roots Food Co-op, an organization operating under the umbrella of the Goochland-based Center for Rural Culture. Her mission? Spreading the word to residents that fresh, locally grown produce—as well as local baked goods, seafood and more—is still very much available to them in the late fall and winter months. The way the program works is fairly simple: once buyers sign up for the service, they can log on to the Local Roots website (http:// localroots.luluslocalfood.com) and browse through dozens of local producers’ product lists. The program offers a weekly buying cycle, with orders opening Friday evening and closing Monday evening. Buyers pick up their goods on Thursday at one of several locations in Goochland, Powhatan and Eastern Hanover. “It’s such an amazing concept,” said

Lillywhite last week, returning from one of her weekly drop-offs. “Basically, it’s like a year-round, online farmers market.” As Lilywhite explains, the co-op is a nonprofit, “run by the producers and for the producers.” They only sell fresh produce, she is careful to point out, and it is all locally produced. The market has evolved over the five years it has been serving the area, adding pick-up sites and expanding its roster of vendors. One particular change to note for Goochland residents: The county’s pick-up site has recently been moved from Nadolski’s butcher shop to the Grace Episcopal Parish House (2955 River Rd West), site of the Goochland farmers market. Powhatan’s site remains in the Village, in the parking lot of The Complete Picture frame shop (3835A Old Buckingham Rd). Even after a year as the market manager, Lillywhite still finds it hard to contain her enthusiasm for the work the co-op does, and for the program’s potential.

“It has evolved, and we keep getting new customers all the time,” said Lillywhite. “It’s pretty amazing.” For more information on Local Roots, please visit the organization’s web site or call (804) 878-2166.
