“A Symbol of Pride” For Jerenze Campbell ’92, giving is a way to thank to those who came before him. As Gonzaga prepared for the 1952 football season, several of its traditional opponents told the school that they didn’t want to play the Eagles that year. Their reason: The Gonzaga squad included an African-American, John Gabriel “Gabe” Smith. Refusing to succumb to pressure to force Smith off the team, Gonzaga, led by Athletic Director Joe Kozik, scheduled several away games against schools in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1954, Gabe Smith became the first African-American student to graduate from Gonzaga. On Homecoming Weekend this fall, one of the portals to Buchanan Field was named in his honor. The Onyx Alumni Association led the fundraising effort to name the Buchanan Field portal for Gabe—and Jerenze Campbell ’92 says he was extremely honored to support such a worthy cause. A Leadership Development Coach in Prince George’s County Public Schools, Jerenze was presented with the Fr. Allen Novotny, SJ, Alumni Service Award at the Father-Son Communion Breakfast this past May. “Gonzaga means the world to me. I was developed into a man for others on Eye Street,” says Jerenze. “And if it were not for trailblazers such as Mr. John Gabriel Smith, I may not have received such a stellar education and become a part of the brotherhood and the legacy that is Gonzaga. This portal will forever be a symbol of pride, not only for the African-American students who pass under it daily, but for all young men who call Gonzaga home.”
