Battle In Seattle Playing games with national exposure is nothing new for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs, so when the opportunity to play a feature game in their backyard presented itself, Gonzaga jumped at the chance. The first Battle in Seattle set the tone for a great inseason event as Gonzaga hosted the University of Missouri with Washington native Quin Synder at the helm. The Bulldogs entered the game at No. 17 in the national polls while Missouri was ranked third. In front of a Key Arena crowd of 12,831 and a national CBS television audience, Gonzaga knocked off the Tigers in overtime 8780. Ronny Turiaf scored 23 points to lead Gonzaga while Cory Violette pulled down 12 rebounds and Blake Stepp dished out 10 assists. Missouri was just as impressive on its end with Rickey Paulding pouring in 23 points to go with five assists. Linas Kleiza grabbed 13 rebounds to lead all players. In 2004, Gonzaga hosted the Atlantic 10 Conference’s University of Massachusetts, knocking off the Minutemen 68-57 on CSTV. The Zags defeated Oklahoma State University 64-62 on CBS in front of a record crowd of 13,644 in 2005. Adam Morrison’s 3-point buzzer beater providing the drama. GU faltered in 2006 to Nevada dropping an 8274 decision to the nationally ranked Wolf Pack. In 2008, Gonzaga dropped an 82-72 decision to the University of Tennesse, ranked 11th at the time. Last season’s Battle In Seattle was probably one of the best games to date. The Bulldogs, then ranked 8th in the nation, welcomed the University of Conneticut, ranked second in the nation at the time, to KeyArena. Connecticut rallied from an 11-point deficit eight minutes into the second half, tying the game at 74 with 7.8 seconds left in regulation on a forced 3-pointer by A.J. Price with defender Jeremy Pargo in his face and the crowd roaring at him. Price pumped his fists in defiance after the shot, then stripped Pargo of the ball in the lane to force the overtime. The Huskies then took over by relentlessly attacking Gonzaga’s foul-troubled interior. Behind Gavin Edwards and Jerome Dyson, UConn scored 10 of the first 13 points in overtime and went on to win 88-83. The Battle in Seattle is sponsored by Northwest Sports & Entertainment. Gonzaga will play host to Davidson College this season on Dec. 12.
