A much loved Nagambie couple has celebrated a remarkable milestone, marking 60 years of marriage surrounded by the family and community that have been at the heart of their lives.

Maureen ("Moz") and Keith Fowler were married on 8 June 1966 at St Malachy's Church in Nagambie. Sixty years later, their enduring partnership remains a wonderful example of commitment, family and community spirit.

in recognition of her many years of service and dedication. A lifelong golfer, she continues to enjoy the game today and remains an active and respected member of the local sporting community.

The couple have spent their entire lives in Nagambie and have lived all their married life in the same home in Vale Street. Over six decades, they have watched their town grow and change while remaining deeply connected to the community they love.

Family has always been central to Keith and Maureen's lives. Together they raised two children, Nicole and Shaun, and are proud grandparents to Amber and Bridget. Their family has continued to grow with five great grandchildren, Will, Mackenzie, Lucas, Liam and Olivia, who bring them enormous joy.

Keith worked at FW Parris & Sons for his entire working life before retiring following a workplace accident. Known for his quiet nature and strong work ethic, Keith was also a keen golfer before his accident and continues to enjoy one of his favourite pastimes today, fishing. A passionate fisherman, he can still often be found enjoying time by the water.

Maureen's working life began at the local telephone exchange before it became automated.

She later worked on the bottling line at Mitchelton Winery before retiring. However, for Moz, retirement simply meant having more time to give back to the community.

For more than 20 years she has volunteered at the Nagambie Hospital and Nursing Home, dedicating countless hours supporting residents, families and staff. Often spending much of her day and sometimes her evenings at the facility, her care, compassion and willingness to help others have touched the lives of many local families.

Always smiling and ready with a friendly chat, Moz has become one of Nagambie's most treasured volunteers. Her extraordinary commitment has earned recognition well beyond the local community. She was nominated for Aged Care Volunteer of the Year for Victoria and went on to win the prestigious award. She has also been recognised with an Australia Day award for her contribution to the community.

Her involvement in local sport has been equally significant. Maureen has been awarded Life Membership of both the Nagambie Tennis Club and the Nagambie Football Netball Club

The Fowler family's circle extends even further.

For more than 30 years, Traci Stumer, Jayde Harvey and Courtney Harvey have been part of their lives and are proudly regarded as family, sharing countless memories, celebrations and milestones together.

On the King's Birthday long weekend, family gathered at Zephyrs in Nagambie to celebrate Keith and Maureen Fowler's remarkable 60 years of marriage. The special occasion brought together generations of family to honour a couple whose lives have been built on love, commitment and an enduring connection to the Nagambie community.

Those who know Keith and Moz speak not only of their dedication to each other, but also of the kindness, generosity and community spirit they have shown throughout their lives. Whether through volunteering, supporting local sporting clubs, helping neighbours or simply offering a warm smile and friendly conversation, they have made a lasting contribution to the town they proudly call home.

As they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, Keith and Maureen Fowler are a shining example of the values that make country communities so special, family, friendship, service and an unwavering commitment to others.

Congratulations Keith and Moz on 60 wonderful years together. Your contribution to Nagambie has enriched the lives of so many, and your story is one well worth celebrating.

Gravelista Secured for Two More Years as Seymour Rides onto the World Stage Seymour and the wider Goulburn Region are set to welcome hundreds of cyclists and visitors over the next two years, with the Victorian Government securing the internationally recognised Gravelista cycling event through to 2027.

Minister for Regional Development Michaela Settle announced $150,000 in funding to lock in the popular gravel cycling event for 2026 and 2027, providing a major boost to tourism, local businesses and regional communities still recovering from this summer’s devastating bushfires.

The announcement cements Seymour’s growing reputation as a premier cycling destination, with Gravelista also confirmed as an official qualifying round for the 2027 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Gravel World Championships to be held in France’s HauteSavoie region.

Starting from Seymour Racecourse, competitors will tackle some of Australia’s fastest gravel roads through the picturesque Goulburn Region, drawing riders from across the country and overseas.

The event is expected to deliver significant economic benefits to the region, bringing visitors who will stay in local accommodation, dine in cafes and restaurants, and explore the broader Goulburn Valley.

Minister for Regional Development Michaela Settle said the event showcased the best of regional Victoria.

“These events are exactly what regional Victoria is all about – driving tourism, supporting local jobs and businesses, and showcasing the best of our communities to the world.”

Minister for Tourism Natalie Suleyman said continued support for regional events remained a priority.

“Only Labor will continue to support fantastic regional events that bring visitors to Seymour and grow the visitor economy.”

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes welcomed the funding announcement, highlighting the benefits for local communities throughout the district.

“Securing Gravelista is a win for the Seymour community and its surrounding region, bringing more visitors and supporting businesses across the Goulburn Region.”

Local tourism organisation Go Seymour is already working alongside Gravelista organisers to attract Australian and international visitors to this year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, 25 October.

Go Seymour Executive Officer Sissy Hoskin said the event offered an ideal platform to promote the region.

“This event is a fantastic showcase of the Goulburn Region’s natural beauty and community spirit — and a real boost for local tourism.”

The Gravelista funding forms part of a broader Victorian Government commitment to regional cycling tourism. The 2026/27 Victorian Budget includes $800,000 for the Ride High Country Marketing Phase 2 project, designed to strengthen long-term tourism opportunities linked to cycling.

The initiative builds on a previous $3.5 million investment through the Ride High Country Fund, which supports businesses

expanding services for cycling visitors.

Government figures show cycling tourism continues to deliver strong economic outcomes, with 177,000 cyclists visiting Victoria’s High Country and generating $257 million in visitor spending in the year to June 2024.

The Gravelista announcement is part of the Victorian Government’s broader investment of $50 billion in rural and regional Victoria over the past decade, aimed at creating stronger communities, supporting local jobs and encouraging visitation to regional centres.

For Seymour, Avenel, Nagambie and the wider Goulburn Region, the return of Gravelista promises not only world-class sporting competition but another opportunity to showcase the region’s hospitality, resilience and natural beauty to a global audience.

Solstice Glow to Warm Nagambie This Winter New riverside festival at Mitchelton promises bonfires, live music, local makers and family fun.

A new winter festival is set to bring warmth, music and community spirit to Nagambie later this month, with Mitchelton Winery launching its inaugural Solstice Glow by the Riverside event.

Taking place on Saturday, June 27, the free community festival will transform the iconic riverside estate into a celebration of the winter season, featuring live entertainment, local artisan stalls, fireside food and wine, and a spectacular bonfire overlooking the Goulburn River.

Designed as a relaxed and welcoming event for all ages, Solstice Glow will run from 1pm to 6pm and is expected to attract visitors from across the region as well as Melbourne and surrounding areas.

The centrepiece of the festival will be a grand bonfire, creating a gathering place for families and friends to enjoy the atmosphere as the winter sun sets over the river. Live music will accompany the afternoon, beginning with an acoustic solo performance before transitioning into a duo act later in the day.

Festival-goers will be able to enjoy a range of seasonal food and beverages, including mulled wine, Irish coffee, Mitchelton's renowned red wines and a selection of non-alcoholic drinks.

The Fireside Kitchen will serve hearty winter favourites such as slow-cooked beef brisket rolls and loaded jacket potatoes, while younger visitors can enjoy hot chocolates, marshmallow roasting and dedicated children's activities.

Adding to the festival atmosphere will be

a curated Makers Market showcasing local businesses and artisans from across the Goulburn Valley. Visitors can browse a range of locally made products, including olives, handmade heat wraps, botanical oils, lavender products, whisky and gin, providing an opportunity to support regional producers while enjoying the day.

Mitchelton Winery said the event was created to celebrate one of the most beautiful times of year on the estate and to encourage the community to come together during the cooler months.

"Winter is one of the most beautiful times to be at Mitchelton — the estate glows in the low light, and the river is at its most atmospheric. Solstice Glow is our invitation to the community to experience that, with great wine, great music, and a fire to gather around," a winery spokesperson said.

The event will be held on Taungurung Country, with Mitchelton acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land and paying respect to Elders past and present.

Letter to the Editor Parliament Prize Dear Editor, Entries are now open for this year’s Parliament Prize, giving students across regional Victoria a chance to have their voices heard and share what matters most to them.

The competition invites students from Grade 5 through to Year 12 to submit a 90 second video outlining what they would say in Parliament if they were an MP. As the Member for Euroa, I regularly visit schools across our region and I am constantly impressed by the insight, creativity and passion of young people in our communities. Whether it’s the cost of living, mental health, education, roads, housing or the future of regional Victoria, students have strong views and thoughtful ideas that deserve to be heard.

The Parliament Prize is a fantastic opportunity for students to build confidence, learn more about our democratic system and engage with issues that are important to them and their communities.

Last year, more than 1,400 entries were received from over 240 schools across Victoria, covering hundreds of unique topics. It’s encouraging to see so many young Victorians taking an active interest in the future of our state.

The competition is open across three categories: Grades 5-6, Years 7-9 and Years 10-12, with cash prizes available.

Recovery Welfare Checks to Connect Fire-Affected Residents with Support Fire-affected residents are being encouraged to engage with upcoming welfare checks as Council strengthens its partnership with recovery provider Windermere to ensure community members can access the support they need.

Over the coming weeks, Windermere team members will begin contacting residents in fire-affected areas to check on their wellbeing and connect those who have not yet engaged with emergency recovery services.

Strathbogie Shire CEO Rachelle Quattrocchi said the initiative would help ensure support reaches residents who may be isolated, vulnerable or unaware of available recovery assistance.

A new Memorandum of Understanding, signed on 19 May, allows Council and Windermere to share contact details and relevant information under strict privacy requirements, helping to streamline recovery efforts and improve access to support services.

Residents retain full control over their participation and can choose whether to accept recovery assistance, receive referrals to services, and consent to information sharing between recovery agencies.

Council is encouraging anyone impacted by the fires to take the opportunity to discuss their circumstances with Windermere’s team and explore what assistance may be available.

“These calls are a valuable winter welfare check and will help us assess and plan recovery services over the next two years, Ms Quattrocchi said. “Even if you’ve moved away from the emergency area, you can still get help. Support may be available near where you live now.”

Ms Quattrocchi said recovery remained a collaborative effort, with all levels of government and a range of recovery agencies continuing to invest time, resources and expertise into supporting affected communities.

“It’s inevitable that personal circumstances for some individuals may change over time,” she said.

“Some may now need extra assistance or feel a bit stuck not knowing what steps to tackle next.”

Windermere’s intake team can assist residents by connecting them with support services and information relating to: • local support services • insurance and legal matters • financial pressures • health and wellbeing support • registration for government services.

Shire Ceos Unite To Support Children’s Mental Health Through Disaster Recovery Training Programs

In the aftermath of the Longwood fires, which spread across Strathbogie, Murrindindi and Mitchell Shires earlier this year, many parents were left asking the same questions: How will this affect our children?

How do we help them process the grief, loss and uncertainty they have experienced?

"Across our region, many children have been affected directly or indirectly by the fires. This includes students whose families experienced property loss or disruption, as well as children whose parents and carers volunteer with the Country Fire Authority and other emergency services.

For Kellie Giannarelli from Go Seymour, these concerns were evident in conversations with affected families. Having previously delivered the MacKillop Seasons for Growth program for many years at St Mary’s College Seymour, Kellie understood the value of peer-based support programs in helping children and young people navigate trauma, change, loss and grief.

Given the widespread effects of the fires across our communities, we strongly support this initiative being made available to all schools within the affected areas, including both government and nongovernment schools. The fires have touched the whole community, and it is essential that every child has access to support, ensuring no students miss out regardless of the school they attend."

Seeking support for local communities, Kellie contacted MacKillop Seasons and learned that the organisation had a fully funded Stormbirds Disaster Readiness Initiative ready to be delivered in communities affected by natural disasters.

The Stormbirds Disaster Readiness Initiative builds on the highly successful MacKillop Seasons programs, which have supported more than 400,000 children, young people and adults internationally. The evidence-based programs are designed to strengthen resilience, build emotional wellbeing, increase understanding of change, loss and grief, and strengthen supportive relationships.

The initiative provides schools and communities with access to resources and training through the MacKillop Seasons suite of evidence-based education programs. It builds local capacity by training professionals in schools and community organisations to deliver programs that support children, young people and adults experiencing change, loss and grief. A dedicated team of Resilience Officers provides professional learning, ongoing coaching and support tailored to the unique needs of each community.

Importantly, the impacts of disasters are often felt not only during the event itself, but also in the weeks, months and even years that follow—both for those directly affected and for the wider community.

Recognising the need to support recovery and strengthen community resilience, Kellie approached Rachelle Quattrocchi (Strathbogie Shire Council), Mary Agostino (Mitchell Shire Council) and Livia Bonazzi (Murrindindi Shire Council), who united in their support of the initiative.

New Light Tanker Strengthens Safety and Response for Wirrate CFA Volunteers

The Allan Labor Government is supporting Wirrate CFA volunteers with enhanced safety and emergency response capabilities.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has announced the arrival of a new $225,000 light tanker, designed to be highly versatile and capable of navigating challenging regional terrain.

For many young people, the emotional impact of these events can surface well after the immediate crisis has passed, particularly as the next fire season approaches.

Strathbogie Shire Council Rates notices in the mail Strathbogie Shire Council has issued its fourth instalment rates notices.

Emailed notices have been sent and postal notices will start arriving in letter boxes this week. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Payment is due by 22 June.

Residents impacted by the Longwood Berrys Lane bushfire will receive third and fourth instalment notices together this month based on revised property values following reassessments.

The Valuer General of Victoria appointed LG Valuations to undertake assessments, which included assessing data from fire-affected properties and, in some cases, undertaking a supplementary valuation.

Council has a hardship policy for anyone experiencing difficulties paying their rates. Please reach out to our Customer Service team to discuss your individual circumstances. Phone 1800 065 993.

Payment plans are available.

Council has been advocating to the State Government to support impacted residents with rates relief but there was no announcement in the State Budget. Rates relief is expected to cost $5.9 million over three years and Council will continue to ask the State Government to provide this essential support for our residents.

Nagambie Library closed Tuesdays in June

Free coffee for local first responders

Nagambie Library will be closed on Tuesdays throughout June to enable upgrade works to be completed.

Strathbogie Shire Council is thanking local first responders with complimentary coffee vouchers as part of Thank a First Responder Day on 10 June.

Extended afternoon opening hours will be available on Fridays and library members can also access services through other Goulburn Valley Libraries branches and the eLibrary while works are underway.

First responders can collect a voucher from the Strathbogie Shire Council Customer Service desk from 10 June and redeem it at participating local cafes throughout June.

The upgrades, which are focused on creating a more accessible, functional and welcoming space for the Nagambie community and visitors, are on track for completion by the end of June.

The day carries added significance following the January bushfires, which highlighted the dedication of emergency service personnel and volunteers across the shire.

Key improvements include:

Winter Wildlife Warning as More Than 24,000 Animal Collisions Recorded Nationwide Australian drivers are being urged to stay alert on the roads this winter, with new AAMI research revealing wildlife collisions remain a major road safety issue, particularly during lowlight conditions and on regional roads.

More than 41 per cent of Australian drivers have hit an animal while driving, while AAMI recorded more than 24,000 wildlife collision claims across the country in 2025. Alarmingly, one in five drivers admitted they would swerve to avoid an animal, despite experts warning that this reaction can lead to more serious crashes.

AAMI Motor Claims Manager Leah James said instinctive reactions often put drivers at greater risk than the animal itself.

“No one plans to hit an animal, but when wildlife jumps into your path out of nowhere, panic can take over pretty quickly,” Ms James said.

“Swerving may feel instinctive, but it is one of the most dangerous reactions a driver can have.

"When confronted with wildlife behind the wheel it often causes drivers to lose control, swerving to miss the animal and hitting a tree, or crashing into another vehicle, all of which are far worse than the original risk.

"AAMI is urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and keep a close lookout for wildlife, particularly in signed areas.”

Ms James said.

“Once a kangaroo is on the road, there is not much you can do. But by slowing down when you see wildlife warning signs, you're giving yourself more time to react and avoid a crash."

Australians willing to help wildlife after collisions The research also found Australians are willing to assist injured wildlife following a collision.

Survey respondents said they would: • Stop and check on the animal (60 per cent) • Contact a wildlife rescue service (50 per cent) “Aussies have their hearts in the right place, but in the moment, it’s not always clear what to do,” Ms James said.

“Having a game plan, especially if you’re travelling on country roads, takes the guesswork out of a stressful situation.”

In 2025, wildlife collisions resulted in more than 4,500 vehicles being written off, while the average claim cost exceeded $9,000.

Ms James said the seasonal trend was driven by a combination of reduced visibility and increased animal movement.

“Animals are most active at dawn, dusk, and overnight, exactly when visibility is at its worst, leaving drivers with less time to react,” Ms James said.

Wildlife Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) spokesperson John Grant said rescuers regularly deal with the consequences of wildlife collisions.

“Many animals we rescue have been hit in low light, when drivers don't see them in time,” Mr Grant said. “Slowing down in wildlife zones and staying alert can make a real difference.

“A major factor for the spike in animal collisions over winter, is peak-hour traffic coinciding with the time nocturnal wildlife are on the move—at dusk and dawn—to feed and are most likely to be crossing roads.

“Extreme conditions, like the drought across NSW, push animals to travel further to find food and water and can leave them disoriented in unfamiliar areas.”

"If you do hit an animal, pull over safely and contact a wildlife rescue organisation for advice, even if the animal moves away.”

“Winter brings longer periods of darkness and colder nights and mornings, so animals are on the move more, which means you have a perfect storm for collisions."

While 77 per cent of drivers said they would slow down if they spotted a large animal near the roadside, less than half (46 per cent) said they always adjust their driving behaviour when entering wildlife warning zones.

Ms James said prevention starts long before an animal appears on the road.

“You’ve got drivers doing the right thing when the animal is right in front of them, but not necessarily when the warning signs are there,”

The research findings were compiled through a national survey of 2,017 Australian drivers aged 18 and over and were conducted by Pure Profile between 27 and 31 March 2026 on behalf of AAMI. Claims data relates to wildlife collision claims lodged between 1 January and 31 December 2025.

Nagambie Senior Citizens Our Mother’s Day High Tea at Araminta’s in Seymour went well. We thank them for the lovely spread they provided for us and their usual customer service was appreciated as always. There were quite a few High Tea events for Mother’s Day this year in Nagambie, and many of our members attended these as well. I am sure we all had our fill of lovely food over those days!

We had a trip to the races at Kilmore Trackside on Monday 1st June, with only a small number attending, but they reported it was a very enjoyable meal and day out. We even had a race named after us and this added to the fun and atmosphere.

Our dedicated team braved the terrible weather to hold a stall to sell our beanies at the Seymour Market on 17th May. There were not many sales made, and we thank them for still turning up and trying. We have all these wonderful knitted beanies, scarves and slouch hats for sale at HALF PRICE, please think about buying some. Great for gifts or just for keeping you warm and looking stylish. The milestone means one million families are receiving real help with the cost of living, as the Labor Government puts money back into the pockets of Victorians while fuel prices remain high.

Opening the 2026 program is Bush and Bay, a new exhibition by popular local artist Bruce Hargrave. The show features around 30 framed watercolour works showcasing landscapes and seascapes, many inspired by the Strathbogie region along with scenes from Albert Park and Melbourne’s bayside areas.

An official opening will be held at 2.30 pm on Sunday 7 June with special guest Andy Wilson. Visitors can meet Bruce daily and view the exhibition inside the Artbox between 11am and 3pm.

The works are also visible at any time through the gallery’s glass windows, offering continuous public access.

A valued supporter of the Artbox program and a repeat exhibitor, Bruce Hargrave is known for his distinctive impressionist and realist style. His paintings capture both the natural beauty of local landscapes and the unique character of the region’s iconic buildings, hotels and homes.

An active member of the Watercolour Society of Victoria, Bruce has held many successful solo exhibitions. His practice highlights a deep appreciation for the expressive qualities of watercolour, with a strong focus on vibrant colour, subtle tonal variation and the medium’s unique challenges.

Twenty percent of all sales from the exhibition will be donated to the Euroa Chamber of Commerce Bushfire Relief Fund.

Community Event Highlights Benefits of Reducing Gas Use Community members gathered in Avenel last month to learn how switching from gas appliances to electric alternatives could help reduce household energy bills and improve health outcomes.

As part of a Victorian Government-supported program aimed at encouraging household electrification, RAE is offering a limited number of free induction cooktops to eligible households.

The information session, hosted by Renewable Avenel Energy (RAE) on 26 May, attracted about 25 residents interested in practical ways to improve home energy efficiency and reduce reliance on bottled LPG.

“We’re trying to identify people who would benefit from making the change — people looking to reduce costs and improve how they power their home,” he said.

RAE member Jim Billings said moving home cooking and hot water systems away from gas — particularly bottled LPG, which is commonly used in the Avenel area — could help households reduce both energy costs and health risks.

Mr Billings said up to five cooktops would initially be allocated, with recipients able to keep them permanently.

RAE is working through local networks to identify suitable households, with several already selected. Mr Billings said additional units may become available if enough community interest is generated.

“We’re really encouraging people to move away from gas,” Mr Billings said.

The evening also included a presentation from Mr Lodge on ways households can future-proof their energy use and improve energy efficiency.

“It is a more expensive form of powering your house, and it has been shown to have health impacts, including respiratory issues such as asthma.”

Mr Billings said the session was well received and highlighted practical steps residents could take to lower energy costs and make informed decisions about the way they power their homes.

The event featured a demonstration of induction cooking by Goulburn Valley Community Energy chief executive officer Jeff Lodge, who outlined the benefits of induction cooktops and broader household electrification.

North-East Communities Rally Against Renewable Energy Expansion

The Nationals’ Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland and Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy have joined north-east residents in calling for greater oversight of Victoria’s renewable energy rollout, following growing concerns about the impact of large-scale projects on regional communities.

The pair attended a packed community meeting at the Glenrowan Hotel, where residents from Glenrowan, Winton, Benalla and surrounding districts voiced concerns about the pace of renewable energy development across the region.

Community members raised issues including the loss of productive agricultural land, potential impacts on waterways, and increased bushfire risks for local CFA volunteers already managing significant pressures.

According to figures released by the Allan Labor Government: • Of Victoria’s 86 operating renewable energy projects, only 19 are located within a proposed Renewable Energy Zone.

• Of the 16 projects currently under construction, nine are located within a proposed zone.

• Of the 111 renewable energy projects approved across the state, only 34 are within a proposed Renewable Energy Zone.

• Of the 15 projects with planning permits currently under construction, seven are located entirely outside those zones.

Ms Cleeland said the figures highlighted significant shortcomings in the state's energy planning framework and reinforced community concerns about the approval process.

“Farmers and landholders across the northeast are being silenced by a Labor Government determined to bulldoze through transmission lines and industrial-scale projects,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Regional Victorians should not carry the burden of an energy transition that Melbourne demands but refuses to build in its own backyard.”

Ms Cleeland said The Nationals’ Urban Solar Parks policy would provide an alternative approach by encouraging renewable energy generation on industrial rooftops and commercial precincts rather than productive farmland.

“We will reinstate communities’ rights to appeal these developments and give local people a genuine seat at the table,” she said.

Mr McCurdy said many residents felt excluded from decisions that could have lasting impacts on their communities and local landscapes.

“People feel completely shut out,” Mr McCurdy said. “Families are asking legitimate questions about fire risks, battery storage, and flood overlays, but they are being met with arrogance.

“We will give regional communities their voices back and ensure regional Victorians are treated as partners in energy policy, not collateral damage.”

The Nationals say the proposed review would examine the effectiveness of Victoria’s transmission planning process and the extent to which renewable energy developments are aligning with designated Renewable Energy Zones.

Community Workshop to Shape Future Infrastructure Plans for Ruffy A community engagement workshop will be held to explore local needs, aspirations and priorities for community infrastructure in Ruffy, both now and into the future.

The workshop will take place at the Tablelands Community Centre site on Sunday 14 June 2026, from 9am to noon.

Strathbogie Shire’s Recovery Team will host the session in partnership with national community engagement and planning firm Capire Consulting.

Capire Consulting has previously worked with Council on major projects including the Urban Growth Strategy and Rural Residential Growth Strategy, and also provided pro bono support in the aftermath of the fires.

Lead facilitators Denise Francisco and Eliza Knox will join Council representatives to deliver presentations, a Q&A session, and open-house engagement activities. Topics will include: •

Status of community infrastructure in Ruffy township, funding and Council priorities

Planning and delivery processes to replace or rebuild

•

Understanding community needs, aspirations and priorities

•

Opportunities for sustainable management models

•

Proposed new facilities on existing footprints and future funding models

This initiative provides a valuable opportunity to ensure that local rebuild efforts and future infrastructure align with the evolving needs and aspirations of the entire Ruffy community.

Attendees can enjoy a marquee setup with heaters, along with egg and bacon rolls, coffee, hot chocolate and tea while sharing their ideas and hopes for the future.

Mayor Scott Jeffery said Council recognised strong community interest in reinstating the Ruffy Recreation Reserve and the Ruffy Tablelands Community Centre in their previous form.

“This broader consultation process to help develop community infrastructure in Ruffy is a timely opportunity to consider options that cater for the future needs of the community,” Cr Jeffery said.

“We are aware Ruffy Recreation Reserve’s Management Committee is progressing its rebuild and design concepts for a replacement pavilion at the oval. Council looks forward to discussing these plans as part of the conversation with the wider community on the day.

“One of the objectives on 14 June is to set clear expectations and community understanding on the process involved in community infrastructure projects,” Cr Jeffery said.

“Council is keen to make the best use of available funding for all rebuild opportunities, in the best interests of the Ruffy community.”

Regional Students Celebrated at Parliament House for Leadership and Character Thirteen outstanding young people from across the Euroa electorate have been recognised at Victoria’s Parliament House for exemplifying the values of leadership, courage and community spirit through the prestigious Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Award.

The annual award, coordinated through The Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland MP’s office, honours students who demonstrate the qualities embodied by Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop, including courage, compassion, humility, integrity, leadership, friendship and forgiveness.

Award recipients and their families travelled to Melbourne for a special day of recognition that included an official presentation ceremony, a guided tour of Parliament House, lunch and the opportunity to watch Question Time from the public gallery.

During proceedings, Ms Cleeland formally acknowledged each recipient’s achievements through a Members’ Statement.

The students also experienced some of Melbourne’s most iconic attractions, including a visit to the Melbourne Skydeck and the Edge Experience, where they stepped out nearly 300 metres above the city in a transparent glass cube.

Victorian Electricity Price Cut to Deliver Relief for Households and Small Businesses More than 500,000 Victorian households and small businesses are set to benefit from lower electricity bills after the Essential Services Commission (ESC) announced a reduction in the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) from 1 July.

Under the final 2026–27 VDO, electricity prices for small businesses will be reduced by an average of 6 per cent, cutting around $241 from annual power bills.

Households on the VDO will see prices fall by an average of 5 per cent, delivering annual savings of approximately $84.

The final determination represents an even greater reduction than the ESC initially projected in its draft VDO released in March.

Around 62,000 small businesses and 512,000 households currently on the VDO will benefit directly from the immediate price cut when the new rates take effect.

The Victorian Default Offer also serves as a benchmark or reference price for market electricity rates. As a result, private energy retailers will be under pressure to pass these reductions on to other customers when market offers are updated from 1 August.

Introduced in 2019, the VDO is a regulated electricity price designed to provide a fair and transparent pricing option for consumers.

The 2026–27 VDO is 14 per cent cheaper than the standing offer it replaced when the scheme was introduced.

Victoria’s VDO is also expected to remain significantly lower than the national Default Market Offer (DMO), reinforcing the state's position as one of the more affordable electricity markets in the country.

The State Government has attributed this year’s reduction to improvements in energy efficiency and continued investment in renewable energy generation.

Business groups have welcomed the announcement, particularly after several years of sharp increases in energy costs.

Australian Chamber Chief Executive Officer Andrew McKellar said the reduction comes after a prolonged period of highly volatile energy prices for both businesses and households, with costs increasing by between 15 and 27 per cent over the past three years.

“The stabilising of energy prices in 2026-27 is welcome news and it provides businesses, especially small business, some much-needed breathing space,” Mr McKellar said.

“Hopefully, small businesses will continue to see price reductions reflected in forward contracts for electricity over the next few years.”

From Paddock to Plate: How One Macedon Ranges Family Built a Direct Connection with Their Community For more than four decades, John and his family have been raising Coopworth sheep in the Macedon Ranges. Today, their business, M.R. Lamb is a familiar sight at Victorian farmers' markets, where customers can meet the people behind their food and learn firsthand about life on a working farm.

Like many livestock producers, the family once sold their lamb through traditional commodity markets. But a conversation with John's son Teddy changed the direction of the business.

"Teddy suggested we try selling directly to customers," John recalls.

"After our first farmers' market, I knew it was something special."

What began as an experiment has grown into a thriving direct-toconsumer business, connecting hundreds of Victorian families with locally raised lamb each month.

For John, the greatest reward isn't just selling quality produce — it's the opportunity to build relationships with the people who eat it.

"I love being able to connect directly with consumers and have them really know where their food comes from," he says.

That connection is increasingly important at a time when many people are seeking greater transparency about how their food is produced.

Farming with the Seasons Life on the farm follows a natural rhythm shaped by weather, pasture growth and the needs of the flock.

The sheep are managed using a regenerative grazing system, moving regularly to fresh pasture. The approach helps maintain healthy soils, encourages pasture recovery and supports animal wellbeing.

One unusual feature of the operation is the absence of sheepdogs.

"Our ewes are very calm," John explains. "They'll generally move where we need them to without pressure."

Keeping watch over the flock is Ben, the family's alpaca guardian, who has become something of a local celebrity among market customers.

More Than Just a Market Stall Farmers' markets have become much more than a place to sell lamb.

John enjoys introducing customers to cuts they may not have cooked before, including lamb ribs, necks and king shanks. Conversations often extend beyond recipes to discussions about grazing practices, animal welfare and the realities of farming in regional Victoria.

As a committee member of the Victorian Farmers' Markets Association, John is passionate about the role markets play in supporting small-scale producers.

"Small producers can create amazing produce, but they need an accessible pathway to customers to make farming economically sustainable," he says.

The markets also provide an opportunity for producers to support one another. John is a regular shopper himself and values the diversity of food available from local growers and makers.

Strathbogie Shire Celebrates Volunteers with a Night of Laughter and Gratitude

More than 125 local volunteers enjoyed a well-deserved night of comedy on Friday 22 May as Strathbogie Shire Council honoured the dedicated individuals who keep the community running during National Volunteer Week.

The free Comedy for a Cause event brought together volunteers from across the region, including many who have played a vital role in recent bushfire recovery efforts. Held as part of National Volunteer Week, the night recognised the enormous contribution volunteers make to local communities every single day.

“Without volunteers, our communities simply would not function the way they do.

“This was a small but heartfelt way to say thank you and give people a chance to relax, connect and enjoy themselves — because they truly deserve it.”

The event resonated strongly with attendees, with one volunteer describing the evening as “just what I needed”.

“I would like to say thank you for the great night last night. It was very enjoyable, very funny and just what I needed,” they said.

Council thanked all volunteers for their ongoing generosity and invaluable contribution to the community. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year, and community members are encouraged to get involved and make a difference.

Dry Conditions Drive “That includes undertaking improvements to our water delivery including our channels, pipelines and regulators, during Lower Irrigation Demand network, the current Winter Works period,” he said.

“These improvements will help provide more efficient and reliable Across GMID water delivery to our customers when the 2026/27 irrigation season The 2025/26 irrigation season recorded the third-lowest volume of water deliveries across the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID) in the past decade, reflecting the ongoing impact of dry conditions and reduced storage inflows.

The season, which concluded on 15 May 2026, saw 79,000 orders processed and more than 850,000 megalitres of water delivered to private irrigators. This was well below the 10-year average of 1,007,000 megalitres.

Persistent dry conditions have contributed to declining water levels across Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW) storages, with inflows to several storages remaining well below average over the past two water years.

GMW General Manager Water Delivery Services Warren Blyth said a combination of lower storage inflows and economic pressures had influenced irrigation demand throughout the season.

“Our customers are continuing to face challenges due to dry and variable conditions” he said.

“Timely rainfall did arrive throughout the 2025/26 season but not at the levels we need for substantial flows into storages.

“Some of our storages, in particular the ones in the Goulburn, Campaspe and Loddon systems, are at 40 per cent or lower.

“This combined with other factors such as lower allocations in the Goulburn system and temporary water prices being higher during the 2025/26 season, plus external factors such as increased fertiliser and fuel costs, has seen a drop in the amount of water we’ve delivered across the GMID.” Despite the challenging conditions, GMW continued to deliver water to customers across its network while preparing for the next irrigation season.

Mr Blyth said the organisation remained focused on maintaining and improving the water delivery network during the annual

The lower delivery volumes follow a significantly larger 2024/25 irrigation season, when more than 1.4 million megalitres of water was delivered across the GMID. Beyond Housing Warns of Rising Risks for People Experiencing Homelessness as Winter Approaches As winter draws closer, Beyond Housing is urging people at risk of or experiencing homelessness to seek support and assistance.

Homelessness takes a severe toll on health, with people sleeping rough dying at an average age of just 44. Contributing factors include limited access to health services, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, higher exposure to violent crime, and increased rates of suicide and accidental poisoning.

Beyond Housing CEO Celia Adams said the colder weather creates significant additional health risks for those without stable housing.

“Winter is a particularly difficult time for people experiencing homelessness. For those who are sleeping rough, including in cars, tents or swags,the cold can make almost unliveable situations worse,” she said.

“Rough sleepers in particular are at further risk of illness, not only due to the low temperatures, but also because the moisture means they often end up with mould on their bedding.

“And it’s not just rough sleepers for whom winter can be challenging. Those on low or very low incomes find themselves in the ‘eat or heat’ dilemma, especially those in older, less energy-efficient properties.”

Many people choose not to use heating due to the cost or are unable to repair or replace faulty appliances.

“The cost-of-living crisis means a lot more people are now struggling to pay their bills without even considering heating on top,” Ms Adams said.

“We’ve seen social housing waitlists continue to grow, and over the winter, this is likely to increase further.”

While social housing supply continues to fall short of demand, Ms Adams encouraged anyone in need to reach out for support.

“Availability of resources such as crisis accommodation and funding to secure it, means we can’t always provide the level of support we would like, or that meets expectations. However, we still encourage people to reach out, because we will work with people to do what we can.”

“If you know someone you think might be struggling, we ask that you let them know they can come to us. A small conversation can make a big difference.”

Independent economists have warned that the full economic plan would require “radical cuts” to meet the $40 billion promise. Labor says this would likely lead to further closures of hospitals and schools, along with cuts to nurses and teachers across regional Victoria.

GMCL Celebrates 30 Years of Leadership Impact at Landmark Gala Goulburn Murray Community Leadership (GMCL) has marked 30 years of building regional leadership with a milestone Gala event that brought together 150 community leaders, alumni, partners, and supporters.

The celebration highlighted the enduring legacy of the Fairley Leadership Program, which has developed a strong network of leaders committed to driving positive change across the Goulburn Murray region over nearly three decades.

Guided by MC Neha Samar FF’21, the evening featured reflections from across multiple generations of the program. Keynote speaker Cathy McGowan AO addressed the importance of regional leadership, followed by a candid panel discussion led by Board Member Shara Scott FF’22. Panellists included Ross McPherson AM, Lisa McKenzie OAM FF’97, Sam Birrell MP FF’13, and current Chair Lacey Nicholson FF’22.

Executive Officer Jesse Mitchell FF’23 said the event represented far more than a celebration.

“When you look around the room, you’re not just seeing individuals - you’re seeing a network, a movement of people who care deeply about this region and are actively shaping its future.”

With more than 700 alumni now contributing across local government, business, health, education, and community organisations, GMCL has remained focused on developing “a willing, ready and able pool of community leaders.”

St Joseph's Primary Division Cross Country On Thursday 28th May, Huda, Scout, Ruby, Hunter, Morgan and I represented St Joey’s at Division cross country in Yea, where it was surprisingly warm! There were schools there from over in Mansfield all the way to Murchison! Huda, Ruby and Scout ran first in the 2km.

Hunter ran next and did so well; he made Regionals! Morgan and I ran next, and I also made Regionals. It was great to see kids from different schools interacting with each other and well done to everyone who participated!

Reconciliation Week On Tuesday the 26th of May, National Sorry Day, the school did activities including drawing their own Sir Doug Nicholls round AFL jerseys which connected to the team's area or mascot, decorating feet to show us walking towards reconciliation and making hibiscus flowers that symbolise resilience, hope, strength and healing .

On Friday the 29th of May, St Joseph’s had a Liturgy ran by Mrs Gab and many other students. We prayed for reconciliation and also made signs out of leaves, one saying ‘Sorry’ and the other saying ‘Reconciliation’.

Everyone in the school contributed a couple leaves each. Our dance group performed to 'Beds are Burning' & we presented our new Indigenous class name signs. We all reflected on what reconciliation looks like in our school and the wider community.

STEM at Nagambie Primary School Our students love their weekly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) lessons with Mrs Saunders. The Years 3/4 students have been investigating rocks, soils and minerals in hands-on lessons. The students have been learning about the different layers, features and properties of rocks, soils and minerals through a range of scientific explorations and activities. They’ve certainly enjoyed getting messy too!

Our Years 5/6 students have been exploring electricity and circuitry in their STEM lessons. They explored how electrical circuits work by designing and testing circuits, while learning how conductors and insulators affect and control the flow of electricity. We have some budding scientists among this cohort of students for sure!

Nagambie Golf A big finish ensued week two of the Finnigan four ball at the Nagambie golf club with multiple pairs having red hot runs throughout the round. John James and Dean Brown come up winners with +6 for a two week total +12 to win by way of count back. It was Brown's 5th time a winner of the much sought after trophy and James 3rd. An emotional Brown acknowledged his admiration of the event which is a longtime classic on the Nagambie golfing calendar and the herculean efforts of his playing partner in achieving the win. He thanked all that participated in making it such a fun and dramatic two weeks with a big call out to matchday sponsor Barry Cryer. Unlucky runners up were the leaders from round one Doug Neville and Wayne LeCerf with a +3 in round two and two week total of +12 was not quite enough, missing out on the win in a count back, Neville will go away licking his wounds and LeCerf will just have to reload for another go next year. Third overall was the much fancied pairing of Michael Sloan and Andrew Biggs finishing on +11 with Dean Brown now equalling Sloan's 5 wins in the event this will motivate Sloan for more in the coming years.

The nearest the pin prizes went to John Hurley with one of his signature strikes at the 3rd, Graeme Cusack stole the 8th, Michael Nolan found the precise spot on the 13th and he was at it again Michael Sloan slotting it onto the 16th. Next week's golf at Nagambie will be a stroke - monthly medal with J. Ezard on office duty and J. Mills in the bar.

Nagambie Football Netball Club VALE PAM SHEPHERD The Nagambie Football Netball Club send their condolences to the Shepherd family on the sudden passing of their beloved Wife, Mother & Grandmother, Pamela “Pam” Shepherd.

Pam was a regular fixture and supporter at Lakers games for many decades, whether at home or away, cheering on her children and later grandchildren.

Pam was always up for an extended chat and a cup of tea, she’ll certainly be missed around the club and the wider community.

Go Nagambie Today, the Go Nagambie community mourns the loss of one of our town's true treasures, Pamela "Pam" Shepherd.

Pam was one of those special people who helped make Nagambie the wonderful community it is. A tireless volunteer, she was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed, never seeking recognition and always putting others first.

Whether it was supporting local events, helping community groups, or simply being there for a neighbour, Pam's generosity knew no bounds.

She was a familiar and much-loved face around town — always ready for a chat, always interested in how others were going, and always welcoming with her warmth, kindness and unmistakable smile. So many people will remember spending far longer than planned in conversation with Pam, because she had a wonderful way of making everyone feel valued and heard.

Pam's work ethic, community spirit and genuine care for people left an imprint on Nagambie that will not be forgotten.

She was immensely proud of her family, and they were the centre of her world. As a devoted wife, loving mother and cherished grandmother, her greatest legacy lives on through the family she adored and the values she embodied every day.

Legend of the Tongs is a nationwide search launched by Bunnings to find, recognise and reward the local community legends who fire up the BBQ every weekend to raise much-needed funds for their clubs.

And there is no one more deserving than Bub. This recognition celebrates the enormous impact that volunteers like Bub have on grassroots footy and netball, and we couldn't be prouder to see her efforts acknowledged on a national stage.
