As the sun sparkles on Lake Nagambie, the township of Nagambie is ready to burst into life.

On Saturday 28 February 2026, the Nagambie On Water (NOW) Festival returns for its annual celebration of water, community, and fun, a day brimming with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable lakeside experiences.

Since 2008, the NOW Festival has become one of Nagambie’s signature events, drawing locals and visitors alike to enjoy everything the region has to offer. From heart-pumping competitions and playful family activities to live music, art displays, and markets, it’s a festival that captures the spirit, creativity, and warmth of the town.

For long-time volunteer and proud Citizen of

the Year Andrea Richards, the festival is more than just a day on the lake, it’s a celebration of community connection.

“I’ve been volunteering at the NOW Festival for many years,” Andrea laughs, smiling as she remembers decades of smiling faces and shared memories.

“There’s something magical about seeing families, friends, and visitors come together on the shores of Lake Nagambie. It’s a day where everyone feels part of something bigger and trust me, you don’t want to miss it!”

The festival day kicks off early, with the Nagambie Lakes ParkRun at 8am, filling Buckley Park with fresh-air energy and laughter. By 9am, the Go Nagambie Lakeside Market springs to life at Jacobsons Outlook, offering a colourful array of local produce, handcrafted goods, and artisan treasures, all set against the shimmering lake. Families can wander along the lakeside to the Ray White Primary School Art Display, a vibrant showcase of young creativity, while the Shepparton Remote Control Boat Club dazzles onlookers with their miniature vessels skimming and weaving across the water.

Club2Pub Open Water Swim kicks off, with competitors plunging into the sparkling water for 600m and 1.1km courses, cheered on by crowds lining the shoreline. Not long after, the Costa Kayak Time Trial challenges paddlers to race against the clock, with just a $5 entry fee and the fastest time of the day taking home the prize money.

As twilight settles, the Strathbogie Shire Council Open Air Cinema lights up the big screen at 7pm. Visitors bring rugs, pack picnics, and enjoy a relaxed family movie night under the stars, the lake reflecting every flicker of light and laughter.

Families can cool off with the Wacky Splash & Play Day, enjoying discounted access to inflatable water fun, while Go Adventure Nagambie offers stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and Hobie boards for everyone to experience the lake firsthand.

For Andrea Richards, the festival’s true magic lies in moments like these. “It’s about connection,” she says. “Watching a child’s first yabby race, hearing the laughter from the grape stomp, seeing friends and strangers alike share a sunset by the lake — that’s what the NOW Festival is really about.

The afternoon brings playful competition with the Tahbilk Great Grape Stomp at 2pm, where participants laugh, slip, and battle it out for grape-stomping glory. Golfers take aim at the Beer Auto Group Floating Golf Shootout, testing their precision on a floating green 80 metres out, with a $5,000 prize on the line. Younger festival-goers can join the Seymour Septic “Shoot the Poop” Junior Challenge, while those after a quirky race can cheer on entrants in the Goulburn Gallop Yabby Cup, a uniquely Australian spectacle full of charm and chaos.

Water supply to fire impacted towns Goulburn Valley Water continues to support communities impacted by the Longwood fires, providing essential drinking water supplies and operational support during both the emergency and recovery phases.

Emergency drinking water access during recovery As communities transition to recovery, Goulburn Valley Water continues to ensure safe drinking water remains readily accessible: Emergency drinking water tanks (15,000 litres each) remain in place at • Ruffy – opposite the recovery hub and hay access point • Molesworth CFA Shed • Yarck Town Hall These sites are available for all fire impacted people, including non-GVW customers, with capacity for containers up to 1,000 litres.

• Additional drinking water fill sites remain open at: • Bonnie Doon Recreation Reserve • Yea Recreation Reserve • Friendlies Oval, Euroa • Alexandra Rotary Park (Vickery Street) Standpipes in these towns remain available at no cost for larger water carters.

Water services during extreme heat • Extreme heat across the region has led to unusually high water demand, placing additional pressure on water treatment plants.

• GVW continues to monitor treated water storage levels closely to ensure supply meets demand.

• Power outages affecting treatment plants on 26 January required temporary requests for reduced water use in Longwood, Longwood East, Euroa and Violet Town.

• Generators are now fully operational, and water treatment processes have returned to normal. Customers are asked to be mindful of their water use while high temperatures persist.

• Importantly, for the many thousands of people who love their lawn and gardens the only restrictions in place are Victoria’s Permanent Water Saving Rules, which require people to only use garden watering systems between the hours of 6pm,- 10am..

• Any changes to water use will be conveyed to customers by SMS, through our social media platforms and on our website.

• Guidance on safe and efficient water use during heatwaves is available at: https://www.gvwater.vic.gov.au/heatwave Community support and resilience • GVW acknowledges the significant emotional and practical toll the fires have had on residents, landholders and local businesses. We recognise the resilience of the Longwood, Molesworth, Yarck, Ruffy, Euroa, Yea and Alexandra communities, and we remain committed to supporting recovery efforts with compassion, transparency and continued on-ground presence.

• We also acknowledge customers and non-customers from the Yarroweyah and Katamatite areas were impacted by fire and extend an invitation for people who have questions about water or need support to make contact with us.

• We encourage residents to share information about drinking water availability with neighbours, friends and family—particularly those who may not have access to phones, internet or social media following the fires.

The gates will open at the Seymour Racing Club on Friday, 20 February, but this will be no ordinary race meeting. When the first horses step onto the track to launch the “Racing For Our Regions” series, they will do so against a backdrop of reflection, unity and a strong sense of local spirit.

In the wake of January’s devastating bushfires, communities across regional Victoria are still recovering, rebuilding fences, restoring paddocks, supporting neighbours and counting the cost of long, anxious days. Through it all, firefighters, CFA crews, SES volunteers and emergency services personnel stood on the front line, protecting homes, farms and lives. Now, the Seymour Racing Club is inviting the region to come together and say thank you.

The February 20 meeting marks the opening of a fourrace regional series and serves as a tribute to the men and women who answered the call when communities needed them most.

A dedicated marquee will welcome invited emergency services personnel and volunteers for an afternoon of country hospitality. Guests will enjoy complimentary catering, entertainment and on-course activities — a small gesture of appreciation for their tireless efforts during the fires. For many who worked exhausting shifts in extreme conditions, it will be a rare opportunity to swap high-vis gear for race-day attire and simply enjoy time with the community they helped protect.

Seymour Racing Club CEO Chris Martin said the event reflects the club’s strong ties to the region and its people.

“Communities like Seymour rely heavily on volunteers and emergency services, and during the bushfires we saw firsthand the incredible work they do under the toughest conditions,” Mr Martin said.

“We’re proud to host the first Racing For Our Regions meeting and welcome those who helped protect communities across the region for a well-earned day at the races.”

“Race days at Seymour are always about bringing people together,” he said. “This meeting is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of those who stepped up when it mattered most, while enjoying everything that makes country racing special.”

Country race days have long been about more than what happens on the track. They are about neighbours catching up on the lawn, families enjoying a day out and local businesses benefiting from visitors. This meeting will carry added meaning — an opportunity for the broader community to show its support in person.

For residents of Seymour, Longwood, Ruffy, Highlands,

Avenel, Nagambie and across the Goulburn Region, the invitation is simple: show up. Bring your friends. Fill the rails. Applaud not only the horses thundering down the straight, but the volunteers and emergency crews who stood steady when the smoke was thick and the days were long.

Recovery is not only about rebuilding infrastructure; it is also about strengthening the bonds that hold a region together. By turning out in force on February 20, the community can send a powerful message that the efforts of local heroes have not gone unnoticed.

The Seymour meeting is the first of four race days in the Racing For Our Regions series. Following Seymour, the series continues at Towong Cup Day on Saturday 7 March, Alexandra Cup Day on Saturday 14 March and at Kyneton Racing Club on Saturday 28 March.

The initiative has been launched by Country Racing Victoria together with Racing Victoria, as a way for the racing industry to formally recognise firefighters, emergency services personnel, affected industry participants and volunteers across the state.

At each meeting, the host club will provide a dedicated marquee and hospitality area for invited guests who served on the front line. Racegoers can expect a full afternoon of country racing, entertainment and community connection, with appreciation woven into the day’s program.

CRV Chief Executive Officer Scott Whiteman said the

initiative was founded to recognise the people who put their safety and lives on the line for regional and country Victoria.

“The bushfires that engulfed parts of Victoria were a catastrophic event, impacting several of our communities, racing participants and race clubs throughout the state. Regional communities are built on the dedication of volunteers, and during the January bushfires we saw firsthand the incredible work of firefighters and emergency services across a range of regions,” said Whiteman.

"It's important that we acknowledge the efforts of our firefighters and volunteers, and the series of events organised is a small way to highlight our gratitude to those who served on the front line. These race days are our way of saying thank you and giving something back to those who give so much to our communities. It’s a small token of our, and the respective communities’, appreciation for their efforts.”

Details regarding invitations and attendance for eligible volunteers and emergency services personnel will be coordinated directly through the host race clubs in the lead-up to each meeting.

If ever there was a race day to turn out in numbers, this is it. Bring your family, invite your neighbours and fill the lawn at Seymour. Let the crowd show our firefighters and volunteers that their long days and sleepless nights mattered. A strong community shows up — and on February 20, ours can lead the way.

Artbox Summer Season Ends on a High Note with Wendy Cook’s ‘Nature’s Inspiration’ Before Moving to Euroa Strathbogie Shire Council’s popular mobile gallery, Artbox, closes its summer season in Nagambie with a captivating new exhibition by local artist Wendy Cook.

Titled Nature’s Inspiration, the show celebrates the intricate beauty of the natural world through Wendy’s distinctive nature-inspired realism. The collection features finely detailed watercolour and pastel paintings of animals, birds and plants, alongside her muchloved pet portraits and a vibrant selection of expressive alcohol ink works.

Since moving to Nagambie in 2005, Wendy has developed a profound connection to the region’s wildlife, landscapes and everchanging seasons. Her art captures quiet, intimate moments — a subtle expression on an animal’s face, the delicate pattern of a wing, the texture of leaves — inviting viewers to pause and truly see the world around them. Working fluidly across watercolour, pastels, acrylics, oils and alcohol inks, Wendy’s joyful experimentation with different mediums shines through in every piece.

The innovative, shipping-container design of Artbox allows the gallery to bring high-quality art experiences directly into communities across the Strathbogie Shire. After Nature’s Inspiration concludes, the gallery will relocate from Nagambie to Euroa for its next season.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery said the exhibition offers a timely opportunity to appreciate the restorative side of the natural world.

Strathbogie Shire’s New Recovery Hub Opens in Euroa – A Central Place for Healing, Support and Rebuilding Strathbogie Shire Council has officially opened a dedicated Community Recovery Hub in Euroa, creating a welcoming, single location where residents affected by the recent bushfires can access coordinated support, practical assistance and essential services.

“The Recovery Hub is about making sure our community has a trusted, accessible place to turn to during what can be an incredibly challenging time,” Mayor Jeffery said.

Located at 34 Railway Street, Euroa, the Hub was launched on Wednesday morning by the Minister for Emergency Services, the Hon. Vicki Ward, together with Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery.

“Recovery doesn’t happen overnight, and this Hub will be a cornerstone of our longterm approach to healing, rebuilding and strengthening our community for the future.”

The Recovery Hub brings together key government agencies, wellbeing providers, recovery specialists and community organisations under one roof. This coordinated approach makes it significantly easier for individuals, families, businesses and community groups to find the information, guidance and help they need throughout every stage of their recovery.

Services available at the Hub include: •

Connections to community resources

Mayor Jeffery said the Hub would play a vital role in supporting both immediate recovery needs and long-term community resilience.

“By bringing services together in one location, we’re removing barriers and helping people get the support they need more easily - whether that’s practical assistance, wellbeing support, or simply a place to connect with others who understand what they’re going through.

In addition to one-on-one support, the Hub will host regular community meetings, workshops and activities to encourage connection, promote mental and emotional wellbeing, and empower residents to actively participate in shaping the Shire’s recovery efforts.

The Hub is also committed to community-led recovery and long-term preparedness. Working closely with partners, it will help build greater resilience and support a safer, more prepared future for the entire Strathbogie Shire.

The Community Recovery Hub is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

He is spreading the word to as many active groups as possible, to highlight and make aware of the importance of the first few minutes to help a person who may require CPR or the use of an AED. The focus is on educating all of us about how we can make a difference in the first few minutes, prior to the ambulance arriving. If you would like to attend, please stay on after line dancing if you are attending, or come along especially, at 12.30pm on Friday 20th February and enjoy a light luncheon and listen to the expert advice given by Neil. Please invite any other friends that may wish to come, no need to be a member. Please let me know or put your name on the list if you wish to attend for catering purposes.

Following our meeting this month, we further discussed the recently introduced Heat Policy to ensure the health and wellbeing of all our members who attend our activities, especially the very active line dancers. We had previously advised that if the forecast is to be 36 degrees or above, the class will be cancelled for that day only. But we are still working on the issues, and how best to ensure all line dancers are advised in time. The blanket approach does not work and we will soon be able to put a more suitable solution in place that will cover all scenarios that have arisen.

Our first outing for 2026 was the BBQ at the Goulburn Weir held on Monday 9th February.

We were very luck again with the weather, even though it was a hot day, the breeze and the shade made for a pleasant evening. Thanks to all those who supported our function. Thanks to our chefs, Abe and Mike who soldiered on in spite of the fact only one bbq plate was functioning on each of the provided facilities. A few joined in some fun games, while others sat back and relaxed and enjoyed the surrounds of the beautiful setting at the Weir. We had the accompaniment of the Corella chorus, but I am sure all that attended agreed it was an enjoyable first outing for the club year.

We have welcomed eleven new members to date this year, and Julie, one of our very new members came along to the BBQ on Monday evening.

Welcome to her and all the new members who have already started participating in many of our activities already. Especially Tai Chi and Get Moving, the class continues to grow, we had 21 attend again last session and we may need to form two circles to cater for all our enthusiastic participants.

Our next movie day will be Tuesday 24th February, “Annie”. Come and enjoy the movie and the interval snacks! Especially in this hot weather, we can offer a cooler environment to chill out for a few hours.

Movies are held on second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with the next one to be Tuesday 10th March, screening the classic “Wonder” then 14th March will be “When a Man Loves a Woman”.

We have a full calendar planned for the year, and our social committee are working hard on bringing you some new and different excursions and experiences.

We have signed up to do a Bunnings BBQ each second month, so as you can imagine, this is a big task for our usual team that run them for us, Abe, Adriana and Chris. But we are looking at a roster to be able to give them a break as it is a big thankless task that they have and continue to do for our fundraising efforts. There is a roster at the clubrooms if you think you can spare a few hours to help over at Seymour Bunnings on a Saturday morning, we have the following dates at this stage, 7th March and 4th April. Further dates will be advised once we have them confirmed with Bunnings.

Recovery Hub now open in Euroa Strathbogie Shire Council has opened a new Community Recovery Hub in Euroa to support residents impacted by the recent fires. Steel and metal disposal – What you need to know Strathbogie Shire Council is asking residents, contractors and businesses to help protect local community spaces by ensuring steel and metal waste is disposed of correctly.

Council has recently identified an increase in steel being dumped at public locations such as recreation reserves, football grounds, cemeteries and Council works sites. Under environmental regulations, this material is considered unlawfully dumped waste and may result in EPA penalties for those responsible, as well as property owners.

Council understands that people may be unsure about disposal options, particularly for large or bulky metal items. To support the community, Council’s Waste Team is available to provide advice on safe, legal and responsible metal disposal and recovery options.

If you have steel or metal materials to dispose of, please contact Council before taking action.

Early advice can help avoid fines and ensure our shared spaces remain safe, clean and accessible for everyone.

Where roadside trees are removed, contractors will work directly with adjoining landowners to offer options for retaining timber or woodchips.

These arrangements are made directly with contractors and are not managed by Council.

On-site assessments by Council Following an emergency, Council officers visit impacted private properties to develop a detailed understanding of how the bushfire has affected our community.

Right now, assessments are underway. These inspections are being supported by staff from neighbouring councils and partner agencies, helping to manage the significant workload and complete assessments as quickly as possible.

The information gathered will help impacted residents with applications for government assistance and planning for recovery or rebuilding. Properties with damaged or destroyed homes, buildings or infrastructure are being prioritised as part of a phased approach that progresses as more roads are formally reopened.

Tree works and debris management Council has completed all post-fire tree assessments across the shire, with approximately 4000 tree-related jobs now in the system. Seven specialist crews are currently working to remove hazards, with the immediate focus on risk mitigation to ensure public safety.

Crews are currently active in Ruffy, Upton, Tarcombe, Longwood, Gooram and Creightons Creek, with a scheduled plan in place based on tree size and level of damage. High-risk works are targeted for completion by late February to early March, subject to changing risk conditions.

Debris clean-up will follow once safety works are completed and is expected to take several months. Council will look to retain suitable timber for community firewood stack sites and habitat where appropriate, with remaining material removed or mulched.

There will be some community events with mental health support coming soon across the Shire.

Arcadia Hatchery: Where Big Fish and Big Memories Await Just a short drive north from Nagambie, along the peaceful banks of the Goulburn River, lies the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery Visitor Centre, a destination that has quickly become popular with locals and visitors. This is more than a place to fish; it’s a space to connect with nature, learn about Victoria’s waterways, and enjoy a day out for all ages.

At Arcadia, visitors can see native fish such as Murray cod, golden perch, and silver perch, and follow their journey from tiny eggs to the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of Victoria. Kokoda Trek Scholarship Opens: Euroa Year 11 Students Invited to Honour Local War Heroes Applications are now open for the Kokoda Trek John “Jack” Dawson Scholarship, offering Year 11 students from the Euroa electorate a powerful opportunity to walk the famous Kokoda Trail in 2026.

Beaches campaign that followed Kokoda, involving Australian and United States forces, along with a visit to the graves of those who lost their lives in that phase of the Pacific conflict.

Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland MP, announced that applications opened on 30 January 2026 and will close at 5.00pm on 6 March 2026.

“The Kokoda campaign is a defining chapter in Australia’s history, and this scholarship gives young people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience that history firsthand.”

The scholarship fully funds successful applicants to retrace the footsteps of local soldiers who served with the 39th Battalion and the 2/14th Battalion during World War II. Strathbogie Shire’s 2025–26 Road Reseal Program Has Begun – 24 km of Roads to be Upgraded

Strathbogie Shire Council has commenced the formal transition from state-led emergency response into community-led recovery following the Longwood Berry's Lane fire.

Council Chief Executive Officer Rachelle Quattrocchi said preparations for long-term recovery are already well underway.‑term recovery

Strathbogie Shire Council’s 2025–26 Road Reseal Program commenced on Sunday 16 February 2026, with approximately 24 kilometres of sealed roads across the Shire scheduled for resurfacing.

“Our communities have been through an incredibly challenging time and, while response efforts continue, we know the long road to recovery begins now,” Ms Quattrocchi said.

“This next phase is about supporting people not only to rebuild, but to recover in a way that strengthens community resilience for the future.”

The State Government has announced that impacted councils will receive between $450,000 and $1.3 million for recovery programs and staff, alongside grants of up to $75,000 for community organisations leading local initiatives. Council is awaiting confirmation of its specific allocation and program guidelines but has advertised for Community Recovery Officers and last week opened a long-term Recovery Hub to ensure support was not delayed.

“We could not wait for every detail to be finalised before acting,” Ms Quattrocchi said.

“Our communities need support now, and we are moving quickly to make sure the right people, systems and services are in place.”

Goulburn Murray Water and GO.FARM Partnership Drives Major Almond Investment and Regional Growth in Goulburn Valley Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) continues to demonstrate its vision of “water for a thriving northern Victoria” through a strong, long-term partnership with agricultural investment company GO.FARM.

Council will also establish a Municipal Recovery Committee to bring together state agencies, emergency services, community services and businesses, strengthening the connection between community needs and government support.

The collaboration has been instrumental in advancing GO.FARM’s $90 million ‘Goulburn Gold’ almond farm development near Coomboona, just outside Shepparton.

The project involved consolidating five former dairy and grazing properties into one large-scale almond operation.

“It’s not Council’s role to replace community leadership - we are here to enable it,” Ms Quattrocchi said.

“No community recovers at the same pace,” Ms Quattrocchi said. “We will work with every township including Ruffy, Longwood East, Upton, Avenel, Gooram and Creighton’s Creek to understand their readiness and to ensure no one is rushed and no one is left behind.

“I want to thank our amazing community volunteers who have worked so hard to support their neighbours in the wake of this disaster. To those who have volunteered and given up their time to support those in impacted communities, your generosity and community spirit has made a huge difference during an incredibly challenging time. We look forward to working together as we move to recovery.”

As Council moves into this recovery phase, it has introduced a new internal structure to ensure it can meet the needs of bushfireimpacted communities both now and over the long-term, while also delivering business as usual for the shire.

“Our staff have done an amazing job to support the response and recovery, while also continuing to deliver the services that our community expects,” she said. “We are recruiting for dedicated Community Recovery Officers to join our recovery team, who will provide essential support to affected residents in the months and years ahead.”

The Community Recovery Officers will be based at the Recovery Hub, which is located at 34 Railway Street, Euroa. These officers will assist with recovery, support community meetings and manage recovery projects.

Amid cost-of-living pressures, the government's Free Kinder commitment continues to deliver real relief, saving families up to $2,700 per child annually. This forms part of the landmark $14 billion Best Start, Best Life reforms, which are revolutionising early childhood education to ensure every child—regardless of location—receives the strongest possible foundation.

The reforms include building and expanding hundreds of kindergartens, delivering 15 hours of funded three-yearold kindergarten per week by 2029, and progressing toward up to 30 hours of Pre-Prep weekly by 2036.

Free blind safety kits available to local families Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland MP, is urging local families to collect a free blind safety kit from Consumer Affairs Victoria to help eliminate a hidden but serious danger in the home.

The kits contain ten plastic safety devices, screws and clear, easy-to-follow instructions that allow parents and carers to securely fasten blind and curtain cords out of reach of young children.

“Unsecured blind and curtain cords are a serious safety risk and can have devastating consequences for young children,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Tragically, these hazards contribute to the deaths of up to two Australian children each year.

Masters of rescue and support vessels are only exempt from items 1 to 4 when undertaking a rescue operation to retrieve persons in distress, provide for their initial medical or other needs and deliver them to a place of safety on shore, and must adhere to speed and distance rules at all other times, and items 5 & 6 for the duration of the event.

Masters of competing vessels are only exempt from items 2 to 4 & 6 for the duration of the event.

All occupants of vessels involved with the event must wear a lifejacket at all times during the event, and vessels must have all prescribed safety equipment.

Should vessels or persons not involved in the event enter the exclusion zone, the event will be automatically suspended until the vessel or person has moved outside of the area.

Third rates instalment postponed until March Strathbogie Shire Council has delayed the due date for the third instalment of 2025-26 rates, with payment now required in March instead of the original February timeline.

Rates notices, originally scheduled for dispatch this week, will now be mailed out at the end of February.

Importantly, no rates notice will be sent to properties affected by the Longwood Berrys Lane bushfire.

This pause allows time for damage assessments to be completed and property rating values to be appropriately reassessed.

Strathbogie Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery said ongoing rate relief for all those impacted by the bushfires was a priority for the Council, but financial support from the State Government was needed to deliver it.

“Rate relief is an issue we’ve advocated for with our local members of Parliament, the Treasurer and all

the Ministers who have visited the Shire over recent weeks,” he said.

“We look forward to making an announcement on this in the coming weeks.

“As we all know it’s been a really tough start to the year for so many in our community, and February can be a big month for household bills with backto-school expenses. Council hopes the later rate payment date will make things a little easier.”

Council continues to advocate strongly for additional financial assistance from the Victorian Government to provide meaningful rate relief to bushfire-affected households and businesses.

Mitchell Shire Celebrates 2026 Community Award Winners and Welcomes New Citizens Mitchell Shire came together in Seymour to honour outstanding local contributions at the 2026 Community Awards ceremony, while also warmly welcoming a new group of Australian citizens.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Seymour following a competitive expression of interest process, the annual event recognised individuals, groups, and events that have made an exceptional difference across the shire.

Citizen of the Year – Kenneth Hall Kenneth Hall has been a tireless and indispensable member of the Seymour community for decades. Always among the first to volunteer—whether during floods, emergencies or community events—he has become a cornerstone of numerous local organisations.

His extraordinary dedication to Kings Park stands out above all. For more than 14 years, he has contributed around 40 hours each week to preparing the grounds for cricket, football, the Seymour Show, the Alternative Farming Expo and many other activities. Even while running his transport business, he donated countless hours and often supplied his own equipment.

Since retiring, his commitment has only deepened. He has helped build new facilities, maintain playgrounds and gardens, construct walking tracks and a boardwalk over the lagoon, and support the creation of a volunteer-built pavilion—transforming Kings Park into a true community showpiece. His passion for cricket has also left a lasting legacy at Eastern Hill Cricket Club.

With unmatched knowledge of the park and alongside a small team of dedicated volunteers, Kenneth continues to take great pride in watching Kings Park thrive.

Young Citizen of the Year – Sam Quigg and Max Chetcuti In 2024, Seymour’s Vietnam veterans believed they had conducted their final Vietnam Veterans Day service. With dwindling attendance and most veterans in their 80s, they felt unable to continue the tradition.

As the 2025 service approached, they approached the Defence Mentor at Seymour College to ask if students might help. The Year 12 cohort responded immediately, determined that the veterans

would not miss their day of remembrance.

Two students led the charge: one became the public face of the event, speaking confidently to a crowd of more than 200 people; the other worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring every detail was perfect—even baking 180 scones to support catering.

Their efforts not only revived a cherished community tradition but also drew national and international attention. The Greatest Generation Foundation in the United States was so inspired that both students, their mentor, and four local veterans were invited on a 14-day journey to Vietnam to visit significant sites, hear firsthand stories, and provide moments of reflection and healing for the veterans.

Community Event of the Year – Kilmore Regional Busking Championships Launched in 2019, this event was created to give young rural and regional performers a platform to build confidence and gain valuable stage experience. Winners across three age categories earn the opportunity to compete at the Australian National Busking Championships in Cooma, NSW, with the chance for a wild-card invitation to the renowned Gympie Music Muster.

Now a respected and eagerly awaited highlight on the local calendar, the championships enjoy strong support from Kilmore’s business community. The event draws visitors into town, unites residents along Sydney Street, and fills the precinct with music, energy and joy. On busking day, Sydney Street truly comes alive.

Community Group of the Year – 1st Broadford Scout Group For the past decade, the 1st Broadford Scout Group has been a cornerstone of the Broadford community, delivering high-quality scouting experiences to around 60 young people each year.

Their impact extends far beyond weekly meetings. They support Australia Day celebrations, Clean Up Australia Day, ANZAC Day commemorations, and assist the Broadford Lions Club in raising substantial funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Committed to environmental stewardship, they participate in annual tree-planting initiatives and have installed more than 30 nesting boxes at Mount Piper to protect the endangered Brushtailed Phascogale.

Through a strong, accredited award program and the tireless work of dedicated volunteer leaders, the group has guided many young members to Scouting’s highest achievements, helping Broadford’s youth grow into confident, capable leaders.

Sports Person of the Year – Helen Mahoney Helen Mahoney is a constant, reliable presence at Wallan Football Club—often the first to arrive and the last to leave. Her unwavering commitment sees her give 100% to every task, event and person who walks through the door.

Her time, effort and dedication are deeply woven into the fabric of the club. Without her, the club would not function with the same strength, spirit or sense of community that residents have come to rely on.

Generous, dependable and fully invested in helping others succeed, Helen embodies the very best of community service.

Arts Person of the Year – Pauline Taylor For nearly 20 years, Pauline Taylor has been a driving force within the Seymour & District Art Society. She has held an impressive array of committee roles—including President, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Workshop Coordinator and coordinator of the Old Courthouse Gallery hanging team—often stepping in wherever needed.

She plays a major role in delivering the annual Art Beyond the Divide exhibition, dedicating countless hours to administration, artist liaison and coordination with organisations, judges and officials across Victoria. Always smiling, even under pressure, she is the first to volunteer for tasks far beyond what is expected.

Her service also extends to stewarding the Art Section of the Seymour Agricultural Show. Despite her extensive commitments, she continues to nurture her own artistic practice, reflecting her deep passion for the arts.

Access and Inclusion Champion – Chloe Hall Chloe Hall joined Riding for the Disabled Association Victoria in early 2025 as a 15-year-old equine studies student, initially expecting only a short school placement. That brief experience quickly grew into a weekly commitment and a genuine passion.

She has become a constant, reliable presence at every lesson day and an essential member of her centre’s team. Calm, caring and quietly confident, she brings out the best in riders and supports coaches with ease—whether horse-leading, side walking, grooming, exercising horses or assisting clients.

In a remarkably short time, Chloe has made an outstanding impact.

Her developing horsemanship, intuitive connection with riders and eagerness to learn embody the qualities RDA hopes to inspire in the next generation of volunteers.

Mayor’s Message Mayor Councillor John Dougall reflected on the significance of the evening.

“This year’s awards recognise the many individuals who give so much to our community,” he said.

“These outstanding people come from all walks of life, often contributing quietly and consistently to support and uplift those around them. Today is an opportunity to acknowledge the significant difference they make and to reflect on how much poorer our community would be without their commitment.

“As well as honouring our community champions, we also celebrate our newest citizens - people who have worked hard to reach this milestone. It’s a privilege to welcome them and share in their achievement.”

The 2026 Mitchell Shire Community Awards shine a well-deserved spotlight on the generosity, leadership and quiet dedication that continue to strengthen communities across the shire.

Letter to the Editor School Zones Return As students return to school for the new year, it’s a timely reminder for all of us to slow down in school zones and respect our school crossing supervisors.

These dedicated locals play a vital role in keeping children safe each day. Obeying speed limits and road rules is a simple but important way we can support them and protect our kids.

The start of the school year is an exciting time for students, teachers and families. While children focus on learning and new friendships, it’s up to us as drivers to make sure the streets around our schools are safe. Even small lapses in attention can have serious consequences.

After spending the last few weeks at home with my own children over the holidays, I think many parents will agree we have a renewed appreciation for the patience, skill and enormous role teachers play in our kids’ lives.

I encourage motorists to allow extra time for drop-off and pick-up, stay alert for children near roads, and lead by example by following the rules. Let’s work together to give every child a safe and positive start to the year.

To all students heading back to school, I wish you a happy, successful and safe year ahead.

_______________________ Nagambie Senior Citizens All activities have resumed for the year and attendances have been great. We have had six new members join this year already, and we are pleased to be able to offer lots of interesting ways to join in and enjoy getting to know other people. Please consider coming along to any of our regular activities offered.

We have recently introduced a Heat Policy to ensure the health and wellbeing of all our members who attend our activities, especially the very active line dancers. So if you are one of the dedicated dancers and the forecast is to be 36 degrees or above, the class will be cancelled for that day only. The other groups are yet to decide if they want to adopt this policy as some groups are less physical or like table tennis are later in the evening, or earlier in the day.

Our first outing for 2026 is the BBQ at the Goulburn Weir will be held on Monday 9th February at 5pm. This is always a popular evening, and we have been blessed in the past with the weather. Come and join us for the BBQ and some fun games, or just sit back and relax and enjoy the surrounds of the beautiful setting at the Weir. We ask for a small serve of salad or dessert to pool but the meat is supplied by the club. Please put your name on the list at the hall, or let me know via email or mobile (0419 567 580) and we can add you to the list for catering purposes.

The first newsletter for the year has been emailed to members, and as always, there are copies available to collect from the Post Office, the library, the Visitor Information Centre and the Community House, if you prefer to pick up a hard copy. For non-members wanting to see what we offer, please let me know via our email nagambieseniors@gmail.com. It is always an issue to ensure all members are informed about the events and what is being offered at the time for you to join in. The newsletter once a month is a great way to ensure you know, even if you don’t come to the hall currently.

Planning is well under way for the trip to Phillip Island on 16th – 18th March there are still a few places available if you are interested in coming along. Final cost is $450 per person (with club subsidy to members). It includes most meals, and accommodation. Entries to attractions included. This is excellent value, ($1600 full cost) We stay at the Kaloha Holiday Resort, (look it up, it’s great) All those who have signed up have paid in full, but if you still would like to come and you contact us we can squeeze you in. We have signed up to do a Bunnings BBQ each month, so as you can imagine, this is a big task for our usual team that run them for us, Abe, Adriana and Chris. But we are looking at a roster to be able to give them a break as it is a big thankless task that they have and continue to do for our fundraising efforts. Abe is very dedicated to raising the funds to cover subsidies for our trips and ensure that costs like the bus trip component is covered by the club’s fundraising efforts. I am sure not a lot of the members know what he contributes in the work he does around the club for maintenance issues, and all the planning and work required for social outings. There is a roster at the clubrooms if you think you can spare a few hours to help over at Seymour Bunnings on a Saturday morning, we have the following dates at this stage, 14th February, 7th March and 4th April. Further dates will be advised once we have them confirmed with Bunnings. We have requested the monthly dates for the rest of the year.

Our next movie day will be Tuesday 10th February, “Monster in Law”. Come and enjoy the movie and the interval snacks! Especially in this hot weather, we can offer a cooler environment to chill out for a few hours.

Movies are held on second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with the next one to be Tuesday 24th February, screening the classic “Annie”.

Mansfield Lantern Festival Secures Government Funding to Light Up Victoria's High Country The Victorian Government has awarded funding to the Mansfield Lantern Festival through its Regional Events Fund, delivering a significant economic lift for the North East region and highlighting Mansfield as a premier winter destination.

Scheduled for 19–21 June 2026, the festival will transform the alpine town of Mansfield—nestled at the base of snow-capped Mt Buller—into a glowing wonderland. Attendees can look forward to a captivating blend of illuminated lantern parades, fire performances, live music, artistic installations, delicious local food, and strong community spirit.

Organisers forecast more than 3,000 visitors in 2026, injecting over $500,000 in direct visitor spending into the Mansfield region and surrounding areas.

The funding will support expansion into a full weekend program, enhanced tourism promotion to draw crowds from across Victoria and interstate, and improvements that strengthen the event's appeal and infrastructure.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the backing, saying: “We’re thrilled to support the Mansfield Lantern Festival. Not only will it be an incredible spectacle,

but it will help fill local hotels, pubs, cafes and businesses with visitors.”

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos highlighted the broader impact of such initiatives: “The Regional Events Fund brings thousands of visitors to local communities, providing a huge boost for businesses and showcasing some of Victoria’s most incredible destinations.”

Mansfield Lantern Festival is one of the latest recipients of the $38 million Regional Events Fund, administered by Visit Victoria. The program also recently backed events such as the La Fiera Italian Festival, Benalla Street Art Festival, and HighCountry Hop Harvest Festival.

The fund invests in festivals, sporting competitions, and art exhibitions that generate employment, increase tourism, and celebrate regional Victoria's unique character. It provides grants of up to $500,000 for events with national or international draw, and up to $50,000 for those attracting statewide and interstate visitors.

In the past year alone, regional events supported by similar initiatives have welcomed over a million

attendees and generated more than 300,000 hotel room nights across the state. Since its inception in 2016, the Regional Events Fund has assisted more than 450 events throughout regional Victoria.

Visit Victoria's Major Events Fund complements this work by backing flagship regional happenings such as the Rip Curl Pro, Superbikes World Championship Australian Round, Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, and Beyond the Valley.

Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements noted the festival's role in the state's tourism success: “Events like this help create demand from people interested in exploring Victoria and convert them into visitors who contribute to our record $43.7 billion visitor economy.”

St Joseph's Primary Grade 6 Leaders Our Grade 6 leaders are ready and raring to go for 2026! The children were presented with their student leader badges and special Grade 6 shirts at our whole school Assembly last Friday.

We love to give the students opportunities to suggest, plan and implement ideas to help improve our school, through leadership roles overseeing sport events, fundraising, caring for our garden and library activities.

Little Joey’s Playgroup On Thursday we had our first Little Joey’s session for the year. It was beautiful to see how much the children had grown and how they welcomed new families to our sessions.

We read a wonderful story called The Terrible Plop, visited our garden and played our new ‘I Spy’ game. The children had a great time enjoying free play on the playground too!

Lakers Lawn Bowls

Hope to see a few more back this week.

We are now into finals time and club championships have been decided in the Men’s and Ladies A Grade.

Wednesday night went back on the 11th of February, with the weather being a bit wild we all had a great hit, even if the wind was playing havoc, we had a bit of fun.

Round 13, Division 2, Midweek: Nagambie defeated Avenel, 68/52. The best result came from Bill Boulton, Craig Fothergill, Kim Blennerhassett and Porky Page having an eleven shot winning score, 26/15. At the end of this round the Lakers sit in 2nd position.

Saturday saw us play Strathbogie on the 7th of February, where we only won 2 sets both of them from Sarah Sanderson well done, but the games were close this saw us go back to 5th position.

Round 13, Division 5, Midweek: Nagambie were defeated by Eildon, 25/44, Eildon maintaining its undefeated top position on the ladder. The best team result came from Tina Keady, Turkey Tom McConchie, Peter Keady and the ever-reliable Bardy McLeod (he will start to believe his own headlines soon), 20/15. The Lakers sit in fourth position, only two points clear of Colbinabbin.

On the 14th of February we headed to Voilet town the weather was great and we all had a fun day, we had a win 9 sets to 0 sets well done to all the team. This leaves us in fourth position.

Round 13, Division 2, Weekend: Fifth placed Tatura defeated Nagambie, 64/90. Unfortunately for the Lakers it was a sad day out, with no team coming home with the bacon. The closest result came from Roger Fraser, Lyn Sinden, John Tennant and Doug Condon, who went down by three shots, 18/21. The Lakers now sit in seventh position and will not make the finals; however, they should keep their spot in Division two. Its current position is seventh.

Nagambie Park Run

Round 13, Division 5, Weekend: Nagambie had a day out, defeating Rushworth, 88/53. All three teams recorded victories, the biggest margin was by twentytwo shots, brought home by Tom McConchie, Jan Goring, Wendy Reynolds and …you guessed it… Bardy McLeod, 37/15. The Lakers are in fourth position, with some formidable opposition at the top. We love a challenge!

Round 14, Division 2, Midweek: In a closely fought game Nagambie defeated Shepparton Park 60/52, ensuring their second position on the ladder and will now go into the finals with confidence. The best result came from Porky Pages team, made up of Bill Boulton, Craig Fothergill and Kimberley Blennerhassett, a strong nineteen shot win, 30/11. The Lakers finished the season in second place and will play first placed Shepparton Park in the first semifinal. At the time of going to press, this game will have been completed and hopefully we will have a good story to tell in the next issue.

Round 14, Division 5, Midweek: It was a must win encounter for the Lakers and win it they did, ensuring a fourth position finals berth, beginning next week.

Playing fifth placed Colbinabbin (only two points separated the teams, with the Lakers in fourth position), it proved to be an interesting encounter, with the Lakers winning by only four shots, 41/37. The best team win came from first time skipper, Tina Keady. She was well supported by Noel Luff, Jan Goring and Reg Dickinson, 29/11. The second semifinal will be contested between Nagambie and Seymour VRI and the result will be in the next issue.

Round 14, Division 2, Weekend: The Lakers, sitting in sixth position defeated third placed Seymour by ten shots, 80/70. A strong win, unfortunately coming at the wrong end of the season as finals start now and Nagambie won’t be represented in this one. The best result came from Roger Fraser, Lyn Sinden, John Tennant and Doug Condon, recording a fourteen-shot victory, 29/15. A good season of bowling for this team, as they moved up from third division to second division this year and can only get stronger.

Round 14, Division 5, Weekend: The Lakers have hit their straps at the right time of the year. After a slow start at the beginning of the season they have finished fourth on the ladder and will play Murchison in the second semi final on Saturday. A nineteen-shot victory against Seymour (69/50) in the final game ensured its position and the best team result came from Tom McConchie, Reg Dickinson, Wendy Reynolds and Bardy McLeod, 31/8.

I recently witnessed two great club games, the Men’s and Ladies A Grade finals. Roger Fraser and Noel Luff had a close encounter, with Roger maintaining a steady lead in the latter part of the game, winning by eight shots 25/17. Deb Luff and Lyn Sinden were very close midway through the game, then we saw Deb pulling away towards the latter end and finishing with a comfortable fourteen shot win, 26/12. Overall, the Nagambie club has three of its four teams playing finals, a pretty tidy effort for a small club, competing against some extremely strong and much bigger clubs. Whilst it can feel well pleased with itself it is now the business end of the season and it becomes a greater challenge which we thrive on. There will be no overconfidence just a head down attitude going into the remaining games. Go Lakers!

We have one more game left against Terrip at Terrip, and then Semi finals on the 28th.

Avenel Lawn Bowls Mid Week Division 2. The last home and away round for season 2025/26 saw Avenel travel to Shepparton East.

The home team were too good and secured its place in the top four winning 14 – 64 to Avenel 2 – 58. Dennis McGregor, Grace Kenworthy, Charlie Kemp, Spud Furletti (s) won 22 – 16. With the scores at 16 all on the 15 th end, Avenel found line and length to win the remaining six ends and the game. Jenny Furletti, Rusty Schwab, Jezza Boruch, Geoff Hateley (s) lost 18 – 23.

Moiann Papageorgiou, Kate Donovan, Fay Hateley, Noel Slater (s) lost by seven shots 18 – 25.

Mid Week Division 5 had a bye.

That’s a wrap for Avenel in mid-week pennant as neither teams made finals.

Weekend Division 2. Also, the last game of the home and away season. A tough day against second placed team Shepparton Golf who were too good across the four rinks winning 18 – 109 to Avenel 0 – 63.

Avenel did not make the finals in our first year in Division 2 but have gained invaluable experience at a higher level.

Walter Pedder, Ron Harrison, Pam Pedder, Howard Geldard (s) were one shot down at smoko. With guns blazing they came out for the second half with one thing on their minds – a win! And win they did, winning all nine ends in the second half scoring fifteen shots to zero for an epic 27 - 13 win Mark Morse, Marg Harrison, Kate Donovan, Ross Sinclair (s) after giving away a six on the third end were down 1 – 11 on the fifth end. Winning the next six ends put them back in the game. In a close finish Mooroopna held strong for a two shot win 19 – 17.

Avenel now progress to Semi Final 2 against Murchison at Dookie this Saturday. Wishing our neighbours, Euroa, Nagambie, Seymour and Seymour VRI all the very best in the finals for mid-week and weekend pennant.

Nagambie Golf RESULTS WEDNESDAY 4TH FEBRUARY We only had 4 players for a round of Stroke.

The winner of all grades was.Deb Ringin with 73net.

Deb was also the 9 hole winner with 36.5net Balls down the line for 18 holes and 9 holes both went to Deb. Deb also managed N/P on the 13th.

Deb also won the Seymour Club Voucher RESULTS WEDNESDAY 11TH FEBRUARY We had 8 players for a round of Stableford.

The winnner of all grades was Amanda Thompson with 38 pts.

The 9 hole winner was Moz Fowler with 21 pts on a C/B from Jane Bow 18 hole balls went to Amanda 38pts and Moz 35pts.

9 hole balls went to Moz and Jane 21pts.

N/P on the 3rd went to Jane and on the 13th Moz. Amanda was the winner of the Monthly Medal and the Seymour Club Voucher.

Nagambie Tennis Club Hotshots started again on Tuesday the 10th of February , it was good to see new and old players on the court, even though it was a hot day they all they all had fun and enjoyed they all zooper doppers after the game.

I’d heard of Parkrun years ago but didn’t take much notice until it launched here in Nagambie. While I wasn’t a runner, the beautiful boardwalk course over the water inspired me to give it a go, walking at first.

More than a year on, I’ve brought along family and friends, visited other locations, and even started running parts of it.

Parkrun has become a favourite way to start my weekend and connect with our community. Nagambie will always be my home course, and this month I volunteered for the first time to give back to the amazing team who make it happen.

Parkrun is a free, weekly 5km event held every Saturday at 8am in communities around the world, including right here in Nagambie!
