Nagambie’s Go Adventure Nagambie has claimed two national Gold Awards, beating iconic Australian adventure experiences and putting regional Victoria firmly on the tourism map.

Nagambie has secured its place on Australia’s tourism map after local operator Go Adventure Nagambie claimed two Gold Awards at the prestigious Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, marking a historic milestone for regional Victoria.

The family-run business triumphed in the Adventure Tourism and Tourism Retail, Hire & Services categories at the national ceremony held on March 6, becoming regional Victoria’s first ever multiple Gold winner at the awards.

The result placed the small Nagambie operation among the very best tourism experiences in the country outperforming high-profile adventure experiences including jet-boating on Sydney Harbour, motorcycle expeditions through Cape York Peninsula, and Segway tours around Uluru.

For owners Lee Rowland and Kimberleigh Rowland, the moment represented the culmination of decades of work building a tourism business around the waterways of Nagambie.

“To be recognised at a national level like this is incredibly meaningful for our whole team,” Rowland said.

“We’re a regional business built around helping people connect

Founded in 1991, Go Adventure Nagambie has spent more than three decades introducing visitors to the natural beauty of the Nagambie Lakes and the Goulburn River, offering experiences ranging from kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to pedal boats, canoeing and luxury pontoon boat winery cruises.

For Nagambie locals, however, the biggest celebration belonged to a homegrown business that has quietly spent more than 30 years helping visitors discover the region.

The Rain!

Dear Editor,

The recent rainfall across our region is very welcome. After a long dry spell, it has brought much-needed relief for farmers, families, and our local environment.

Paddocks are turning green again, water supplies are improving, and it is heartening to see the land beginning to recover.

For those working on the land, every drop counts. Crops and pastures benefit, livestock have better access to water, and local wildlife is given a chance to thrive.

This rain is a small but important step towards easing the pressures our rural communities have faced over recent months.

It is a reminder of just how much our community depends on our natural resources and how quickly conditions can change.

While there is still work to be done, it is encouraging to see the land respond and to know that our region is capable of bouncing back.

Easter Chocolate Prices Stay High Despite Falling Cocoa Costs Australian shoppers are noticing significantly higher chocolate prices on supermarket shelves in the lead-up to Easter, even as global cocoa prices ease from historic highs.

Dr Vinh Thai, a professor of logistics and supply chain management at RMIT and founder of the Australian Maritime Logistics Research Network, explained the complex factors driving these persistent increases.

"The price of cocoa – the key ingredient for making chocolate - has experienced extreme volatility in recent years due to various supply factors such as extreme weather in West Africa, disease, fertiliser issues, and other supply disruptions.

"Crops have improved during 2025/2026, and it is forecasted that cocoa supply issues will be further eased, pulling the price down from its peak of over $12,220 per ton in April 2024.

"But despite the easing prices, the shelf price of chocolate at retail outlets remains elevated for various reasons including increasing costs of other ingredients and components for production, and now the impacts of the conflict in Iran.

"Meanwhile, there is also a time factor involved as the cocoa shipments used to make chocolate this year were purchased at the price peak, thus cost savings from the current cocoa price drop have not yet been passed on.

"So, when will the price of chocolate reduce? We may see it reduce toward the end of 2026 and moving into 2027, provided that the current conflict in Iran does not prolong, and there are more certainties related to other supply-related factors like weather conditions, which can be hard to predict."

The volatility stems primarily from West Africa's dominant cocoa-producing regions, where extreme weather events, crop diseases, and fertiliser challenges have repeatedly disrupted supply in recent years. While 2025/2026 has seen better harvests and forecasts for further supply relief, retail prices have not yet reflected these improvements.

Several ongoing pressures keep shelf prices elevated: rising costs for secondary ingredients and production inputs, plus new uncertainties from the conflict in Iran affecting global supply chains and energy prices. Additionally, manufacturers bought much of this year's cocoa stock at or near the April 2024 peak of over $12,220 per tonne, delaying any potential pass-through of lower commodity costs to consumers.

Dr Thai anticipates relief may not reach shoppers until late 2026 or into 2027, contingent on the resolution of geopolitical tensions and more stable weather patterns— factors that remain difficult to forecast reliably.

Nagambie Cemetery Trust Update: A Positive Path Forward Twelve months ago, the Nagambie community came together at a town meeting to discuss the future of the Nagambie Cemetery and the reform of the Cemetery Trust. The meeting, held at the Nagambie Senior Citizens Hall, drew strong community interest, with 26 residents attending to share ideas and show their support for ensuring the cemetery remained a wellmaintained and respectful place of remembrance for generations to come.

Following that meeting and the submissions received from the community, the Victorian Department of Health stepped in during 2025 to appoint four members to ensure the continued operation of the trust while it reformed. Those appointed included local members Traci Stumer and Trevor Forbes, along with two experienced representatives from the Avenel Cemetery Trust, who provided valuable expertise and guidance during the transition.

In further positive news, the Department of Health has recently appointed four additional community members to the trust in recent weeks, further strengthening the governance of the cemetery and ensuring broader local representation moving forward.

Over the past 12 months, the newly appointed members have been working steadily behind the scenes to strengthen the operations of the cemetery. This has included reviewing and updating documentation, continuing the everyday operations of the cemetery including burials and plot management, and applying for grants to improve the facility.

That work is already delivering results. Funding secured through successful grant applications has allowed for several important upgrades, including the renovation of the cemetery pavilion, the installation of new pathways to improve accessibility throughout the grounds, the installation of several park benches where visitors can stop, rest and reflect while visiting loved ones, and the ongoing process of mapping cemetery plots to improve record keeping for the future.

Trust member Trevor Forbes said the past year has been about rebuilding strong foundations for the cemetery and ensuring it remains a place the community can be proud of.

“The cemetery is an incredibly important place for our community. It holds our history, our families and our stories,” Trevor said. “We’ve made strong progress over the past year and there is a very positive future ahead. With continued community support, we can ensure the cemetery remains a peaceful and well-cared-for place for generations to come.”

As the trust continues its work, community involvement will play an important role in maintaining and improving the grounds. Volunteers are warmly invited to lend a hand with small working bees and ongoing tasks around the cemetery. Jobs may include pruning the roses, helping weed pathways, and assisting with general improvements to the grounds.

“The more hands we have, the better the cemetery will look,” Trevor added. “It’s something the whole community can take pride in.”

The trust would also like to thank the many community members who have already assisted by providing copies of documentation relating to burial plot purchases. This information has been incredibly helpful in ensuring cemetery records are accurate and up to date. If you have purchased a plot at the Nagambie Cemetery and have not yet sent through your documentation, the trust encourages you to do so to help ensure all records are complete.

Join the Fun: Celebrate Ghanaian Culture at Nagambie Library Celebrate Cultural Diversity Week by joining a special event at Nagambie Library to meet Ras Ato, author of two children’s books. Ras will share his books, along with a variety of fun, childfriendly activities.

The event takes place on Friday 27th March at 11.00am.

Ras will introduce aspects of his Ghanaian culture through stories, games and songs. While the session is designed with children in mind, adults are warmly encouraged to attend and take part.

Essential Caravan Muster Rolls Into Nagambie Delivering $17,500 Boost for Community Groups More than 140 caravans rolled into Nagambie for the Essential Caravan Muster, raising $17,500 for local community groups and charities.

Nagambie has received a major boost from visiting caravanners, with the Essential Caravan Muster raising an impressive $17,500 for local community organisations during a vibrant weekend event in town.

The event program included a sausage sizzle, a two-course roast dinner, and a Sunday morning egg and bacon breakfast, along with a fundraising auction and raffle that attracted strong participation from the travelling caravanning community.

With around 30 to 40 prizes donated by local businesses and supporters, the auction proved to be one of the highlights of the weekend, helping drive the impressive fundraising result.

More than 140 caravans rolled into Nagambie for the three-day gathering at Discovery Parks Nagambie, bringing visitors, volunteers and local organisations together in a celebration of community spirit, friendship and generosity.

Event organiser Dwayne Pendlebury said the generosity of the caravanning community was central to the success of the event.

“It’s fantastic to see visitors coming to Nagambie, enjoying everything the region has to offer, and at the same time contributing to local community groups,” he said.

Beyond the fundraising success, the caravan muster also provided a welcome boost for local businesses, with visitors exploring Nagambie’s cafés, wineries and attractions throughout the weekend.

“It’s actually quite rare for groups who come to town to run events to have giving back to the local community front of mind, so what the Essential Caravan Muster team has done truly means a lot to our town.”

Longwood Lights Up: Tones and I Concert Sparks Hope After Bushfires The Longwood Bushfire Relief Concert turned a quiet Victorian country town into a hub of celebration and support on Saturday, March 7.

Australian artist Tones and I delivered a headline performance at the Longwood Recreation Reserve, pulling in a crowd of nearly 5,000 to a community with a population of roughly 263. The fully sold-out show featured opening acts to build the atmosphere before the main set took over the evening.

Organised through dedicated local initiative, the event started without any initial financial backing or sponsors. The team managed complex logistics—including crowd flow, safety measures, temporary setups, and helper coordination—to create a secure space for thousands in a rural setting. It became a true grassroots production driven by residents.

Just before the concert, the Victorian Government provided assistance via its Regional Events Fund to assist with running expenses. This help aimed to draw visitors to the area, support nearby

businesses, and offer encouragement to a region dealing with recent bushfire impacts.

A portion of ticket proceeds—$5 per ticket—went straight to the Strathbogie Disaster Relief Fund to assist affected families and emergency services.

The overall fundraising total reached tens of thousands of dollars, delivering meaningful aid during recovery.

Post-event feedback from those who attended flooded social media channels. Many described the atmosphere as vibrant and uplifting, with the gathering standing out even against larger urban performances. People noted the mix of attendees from different backgrounds coming together for a shared positive experience, marking a welcome shift after a challenging period.

The presence of a major artist in such a small, disaster-affected location so quickly afterward carried special significance. It underscored that rural communities are valued and deserve attention and resources.

Gratitude extended to the extensive network of helpers, local organisations, security providers, water services, and all involved in pulling off the production. Their combined efforts turned the night into something memorable.

Victorian Government Opens $5 Million Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre at Snobs Creek The Victorian Government has officially opened the new Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre at the Snobs Creek Hatchery, a $5 million facility designed to provide a major boost to the recovery of this endangered native fish species.

Funded through the $96 million Go Fishing and Boating Victoria Plan, the centre enhances local breeding capacity, secures supply for future releases, and supports the ongoing vitality of recreational fishing across the state. Construction spanned more than a year and created 20 local jobs during the build phase.

Equipped with advanced recirculating aquaculture systems, the facility precisely controls light, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen to create ideal conditions for breeding Macquarie perch and trout cod—iconic and threatened native species.

This year alone, 131,770 Macquarie perch have been released into Victorian waterways to aid

species recovery, including: •

10,755 into the Broken River

•

3,000 into Dartmouth Dam

•

32,495 into the Goulburn River

•

22,440 into the King River

•

40,550 into the Kiewa River

•

22,530 into the Ovens River

Once fully operational, the centre will produce up to 500,000 Macquarie perch and 500,000 trout cod annually—a nearly four-fold increase over previous capacity. It complements the Arcadia Fish Hatchery, which produces 6 million Murray cod and golden perch each year.

“This new Recovery Centre is a game-changer for Victoria’s endangered native fish, ensuring our great fishing traditions continue for generations to come”, said Minister for Outdoor Recreation Steve Dimopoulos “We are backing fishing because it gives Victorians more ways to get outside, make memories, and connect with their communities.”

Member for Northern Victoria Jacelyn Symes added, “This centre is a fantastic asset to the region, protecting iconic species like the

Macquarie perch and ensuring that recreational fishing can continue to thrive right across the state.”

VFA Rescues Fish from Bushfire Contaminated Waters In February the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) rescued 40 Macquarie perch and 55 trout cod from Hughes and Sevens Creeks on Taungurung Country. The fish were relocated to a temporary home at the Snobs Creek Hatchery following the Longwood bushfire, which risked contaminating the waterways with ash and debris. The rescue was conducted in partnership with DEECA’s Arthur Rylah Institute. These fish are now being cared for in the new Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre and will be monitored for eventual return to their original habitat. They join other fire-rescued species at the facility, including alpine spiny crayfish and Moroka galaxias.

The centre marks a significant step forward in conserving Australia’s endangered freshwater fish while reinforcing investment in outdoor recreation, encouraging Victorians to enjoy nature, build community connections, and create lasting memories through fishing.

Fuel Price Cap Failing Regional Victorians Amid Growing Supply Crisis The Allan Labor Government’s daily fuel price cap is failing to shield regional Victoria from price gouging, as escalating concerns mount over fuel access for independent retailers and farmers.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland highlighted that major fuel price surges are coinciding with severe supply shortages for independent retailers in regional communities.

“These independent retailers are the very businesses that deliver fuel directly to farms ahead of sowing and harvest,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Right now the issue isn’t simply price. We are also facing an access crisis that is directly harming regional Victorians.”

Ms Cleeland explained that extraordinary demand— spurred by international supply disruptions—has drained the spot market, leaving independents reliant on uncontracted supply in a precarious position.

“In the days following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, demand for diesel and petrol surged across regional Australia as farmers, transport operators and businesses rushed to secure supply,” she said.

“That surge has drained the spare supply that normally circulates through the market.”

The effects are already evident on the ground, with some independent fuel stations in regional Victoria running dry.

“Suppliers are now moving to allocation systems that prioritise customers with long-term supply contracts,” she said.

“That means independent retailers and regional communities are finding themselves at the back of the queue, which has serious implications for our agricultural sector.”

Ms Cleeland warned that the disruptions are rippling through regional economies.

“Trades, transport businesses and machinery operators all rely on reliable fuel supply to keep working,” she said.

“When fuel becomes harder to access, it disrupts everything from farming operations to freight, construction and small business.”

Australia’s heavy reliance on imported refined fuel— from refineries in Korea, Japan, China, and India— exacerbates the vulnerability, as many of these sources depend on Middle Eastern crude oil.

“With shipping routes disrupted and pressure building on refineries overseas, the entire global supply chain is under strain. This is not a simple retail pricing issue that can be solved with an app or a daily price cap.”

Ms Cleeland called on the Allan Labor Government to urgently engage with industry stakeholders to avert fuel shortages in regional Victoria.

“When governments fail to act early on supply issues, the pressure flows straight through to families, farmers and small businesses already battling rising costs,” she said.

“If independent retailers cannot access supply, price caps won’t matter. The pumps will simply run dry.”

More Victorian Kids Set to Play: Round 10 of Get Active Kids Vouchers Now Open The Allan Labor Government is breaking down financial barriers so more children across Victoria can join the sports and activities they love.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has announced that applications for Round 10 of the popular Get Active Kids Voucher program are now open, with more than 40,000 vouchers available to eligible families.

Families can apply for up to $200 per child to help cover upfront costs such as memberships, registration fees, uniforms, and equipment for a wide variety of organised sports and active recreation options.

Backed by a $23 million investment, the program continues to deliver strong results: nearly 20 per cent of children who have received vouchers have joined a local sporting club for the first time.

Since launching in 2020, more than 225,000 vouchers have been claimed, transforming opportunities for thousands of Victorian kids.

As Jaclyn Symes puts it: “We’re providing real support for families in Northern Victoria to make sure kids aren’t sitting on the sidelines because of cost.”

The program supports children and young people aged 18 and under who are named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card—and listed on a Medicare Card. A special consideration stream is also available for children in care, temporary or provisional visa holders, migrants, and international students.

Vouchers can be redeemed with any registered Get Active Kids activity provider, giving families choice and flexibility.

The Payne of Valour Exhibition Behind the Victoria Cross This year marks the 125th year of the Australian Army, which was formed in 1901, our Federation year.

As part of the celebrations, the world’s oldest living Victoria Cross winner, has been honoured with a photographic exhibition at the Puckapunyal Army Base Chapel. Keith Payne VC AM, was awarded the last ‘Imperial’ Victoria Cross medal, by Queen Elizabeth II on the royal yacht Britannia, in 1971.

Very briefly, he saved the lives of forty soldiers, in a fierce fire-fight, near Ben Het in Vietnam, in 1969.

While Vietnam became an unpopular war, over 60,000 thousand Australians served there, between 1962 and 1972. Those soldiers were serving our country at a time of international uncertainty, and believed they were doing their bit to make the world and our home a safer place. Of those who served, 521 lost their lives (8 Navy, 17 RAAF, 496 Army).

Now while we have been going about our normal business, Nagambie has been the temporary home of some highly decorated Defence Force personnel.

Victoria Cross and Medal of Gallantry recipients, as well as Norforce Indigenous soldiers, have moved among us. They have all converged here, from all over the country and overseas, to be part of the Payne of Valour Exhibition. The exhibition is not glorifying war or about medals. The exhibition’s focus is on what is brought home by our soldiers from war, ‘behind the medals’. There have been a number of conflicts since Vietnam, which our soldiers have been thrust into. The trauma they bring home is real and not only affects the individual, but family, friends and colleagues. To settle back into civilian life is a struggle for many, and sadly there have been too many who have taken their own lives. Between 1997 and 2023, 1,840 defence personnel, have taken their own lives, over 70 per year! PTSD is a serious by-product of war and generally stays with the soldier for life. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental

health condition, triggered by witnessing and/or experiencing terrifying events. Fear, flashbacks, nightmares and heightened anxiety disrupt daily life and can have a similar effect of loved ones. The Payne of Valour Foundation, with Keith and his wife of seventy years, Flo, are very supportive and active in addressing PTSD. They work with veterans on a very personal level and are pushing for the Federal Government to establish a facility to properly address the issue.

Defence Force personnel had their turn on ‘lucky’ Friday, the 13th and the public had the opportunity to view the exhibition on Saturday the 14th.

The exhibition was conceived by Professor Jola Stewart. Jola became friends with Flo and Keith’s younger son, Derek, and after spending time with the Payne family, a strong bond was built. The stories came out slowly over time, both from Keith, but more importantly Flo. As Keith regularly says, “Flo should have the VC!” They had five sons and whether away or at home, it came down to Flo to hold the family unit together. Keith was deeply affected by what he saw while serving his country. At 18 years he was sent to the Korea War (1950-1953) and by the age of 19 years, was a war veteran. Keith remained in the army and was part of the on-ground advisory and training team when Vietnam started up. He was a senior NCO (non-commissioned officer) at this point and so commanded various personnel in the field. What Keith had experienced in war came home with him, each time he returned to Australia and his family.

Flo and the boys had to walk on ‘egg shells’ a lot of the time, as they did not know which version of Keith they would get. The devoted father and husband or the severely affected war veteran. Life was a lottery. Progress is now being made with PTSD and is being recognised as the genuine and serious condition it is.

Community Comes Together for International Women’s Day at Fowles Wine The community gathered earlier this month as Strathbogie Shire Council hosted its 2026 celebration of International Women's Day at Fowles Wine, bringing residents together for an afternoon focused on connection, resilience and recognition of the important role women play in communities.

The annual event highlighted this year’s theme of resilience during disasters, a topic that resonated strongly across the region following the devastating Longwood Berry’s Lane bushfire, which impacted homes, farms, vineyards and livelihoods earlier this year.

Attendees enjoyed a relaxed afternoon tea accompanied by live music from Gayle Mawson, creating a welcoming atmosphere for conversation and reflection.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Scott Jeffery served as MC for the day, highlighting the event as a key opportunity to recognise the resilience and

leadership of women across the region.

Two highly respected speakers shared insights drawn from extensive experience in disaster recovery and humanitarian work. Michelle Roberts spoke about the importance of supporting children and families through crises and the critical role of community connection in recovery.

She was joined by Fyowna Norton from the Australian Red Cross, who discussed the role women often play in supporting communities through emergency response and longterm recovery, as well as the importance of preparedness and collaboration.

The event’s location also carried special significance. The vineyards of Fowles Wine Upton Hill property sustained extensive damage during the recent fires, making the venue a powerful symbol of local resilience and rebuilding.

The gathering provided an opportunity for community members to reflect on shared experiences, recognise the contributions of women across the shire, and continue strengthening the connections that support communities through challenging times.

Strathbogie Shire Council thanked everyone who attended and contributed to making the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration a memorable and inspiring event.

Victoria Police Seize 800 Key Cloning Devices Amid Soaring High-Tech Car Thefts Victoria Police seized 800 key cloning and reprogramming devices from prolific car thieves last year, as intelligence reveals more than 10,000 vehicles are now stolen annually using this advanced technology.

800 devices. Around 80% of stolen vehicles are recovered each year, and officers maintain close collaboration with affected manufacturers to address vulnerabilities.

Motor vehicle theft has surged dramatically in Victoria, with Crime Statistics Agency data recording 33,212 vehicles stolen in the year ending September 2025. This sharp rise aligns closely with thieves increasingly employing key mimicking or cloning tools to bypass vehicle security systems.

“Police are targeting the most prolific car thieves, which continues to lead to quick arrests.

Police intelligence indicates that well over a quarter of all car thefts now involve this method. Vehicles with push-to-start ignitions are prime targets, often vanishing quietly from residential streets or public areas without signs of forced entry, burglary, or violence. In most cases, owners report keeping their keys while the car simply disappears.

Toyota models are particularly vulnerable: 846 LandCruisers were stolen last year under circumstances suggesting technological theft, compared to 241 in 2024 and just 89 three years earlier. Other frequently targeted vehicles include Toyota Corollas, Hiluxes, RAV4s, Holden Commodores, and Subaru Imprezas.

The hardest-hit areas for tech-driven thefts last year included Melbourne, Dandenong, Tarneit, Narre Warren, St Albans, Craigieburn, Southbank, Reservoir, Truganina, and Epping. Emerging hotspots in early 2026 feature Berwick, Malvern East, Clayton, and Glen Waverley.

Goulburn Valley Water Launches LongTerm Water Supply Review for Longwood Following January Fires Goulburn Valley Water has begun a thorough investigation into sustainable, long-term options for delivering safe drinking water to the Longwood community.

Since the devastating January bushfires forced the Longwood Water Treatment Plant offline, the town’s water supply has remained uninterrupted and reliable. Customers have continued to receive highquality drinking water through a dedicated water carting program, with trucks transporting treated water daily from the Seymour Water Treatment Plant to Longwood’s storage tanks.

To strengthen reliability during this interim period, two new storage tanks have been installed, significantly boosting the town’s storage capacity while longer-term solutions are developed.

General Manager Planning and Assets, Regan Flanagan, emphasised

“Our intelligence estimates as many as 30 cars are being stolen using key cloning technology in Victoria every day.

“Key cloning devices are showing up more and more frequently at search warrants and during intercepts of suspicious vehicles.

“There is no doubt this methodology is rife in the criminal world and as a community, we need to work together to reduce car theft.

“The best thing you can do is park your car off the street and install anti-theft devices, such as OBD port locks, to reduce your chances of falling victim.

“Victoria Police continues to bolster the number of police in the community so our officers can deter and prevent crime.”

Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Bob Hill emphasised community action as key to combating the trend.

Police recommend simple, effective deterrents: install affordable, easy-to-fit on-board diagnostic (OBD) port locks to block device connections; park vehicles off-street when possible; and always lock cars—even at home.

These steps, combined with ongoing enforcement, aim to curb the escalating threat and protect Victorian drivers from this sophisticated form of crime. the importance of the ongoing assessment: “We ask for patience as we investigate every option to come up with the most effective way of ensuring our customers receive the reliability and quality they deserve,” Mrs Flanagan said.

“Water carting will continue for as long as required to maintain supply throughout the assessment period”.

Before the fires, Longwood sourced its raw water from Nine Mile Creek, which was treated locally at the Longwood Water Treatment Plant. The bushfires severely damaged both the treatment facility and the Nine Mile Creek catchment, preventing any on-site treatment since January.

A dedicated team is now evaluating a full range of future supply options for Longwood. Goulburn Valley Water will actively consult and engage directly with the local community throughout the assessment process to ensure community needs and perspectives are central to the final decision.

Water security remains essential to the social, environmental, and economic vitality of rural communities like Longwood. Goulburn Valley Water is fully committed to identifying and delivering a robust, long-term solution that safeguards the town’s water supply for generations to come.

Mitchell Shire Set to Become Home of New Melbourne Cobras Hockey One Program Beveridge will soon host Victoria’s newest high-performance hockey program, with the launch of the Melbourne Cobras franchise marking a major milestone for sport in the region.

The team’s official launch on Wednesday 11 March brought together community members, sporting representatives, and government leaders to celebrate the franchise and its future base in Mitchell Shire.

Attendees included Consul General of India Anish Rajan, representatives from Hockey Victoria, Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall, Mitchell Shire Council CEO Mary Agostino, and partners from other organisations.

The Melbourne Cobras will play a vital role in nurturing elite hockey talent across Victoria while being headquartered in Mitchell Shire, further establishing the area as a premier destination for sport and recreation.

This development builds on the existing partnership between Mitchell Shire Council and Hockey Victoria to investigate a new multipurpose sporting facility in Beveridge. The proposed venue would cater to both community-level participation and high-performance programs, linking local players to elite pathways and supporting the Shire’s rapid population growth.

Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell’s $500,000 commitment to the Cobras program via Hockey Victoria has been instrumental in making the initiative a reality.

Planning for the multipurpose facility continues in collaboration with partner organisations. The project is outlined in the Lockerbie Precinct Structure Plan and is proposed for a site near the Shire’s southern boundary, east of the Hume Freeway.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall expressed delight at the Shire becoming the Cobras’ home base.

Access to housing essential to balancing the scales The chronic shortage of housing—from crisis accommodation to affordable private rentals—affects communities across Australia, yet its devastating impact on women, especially those fleeing family violence, is frequently overlooked.

stopgap that is often temporary, unpredictable and flawed. Booking a room offers no certainty about other guests, potential safety risks, or pet policies (many women face heartbreaking decisions about leaving pets behind, knowing they may be at risk).

Proximity to support services and emergency help cannot be guaranteed, and in small rural and regional communities, the location may become known to perpetrators. Availability itself is never assured.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Balance the Scales”, calls for meaningful change to achieve justice, safety and equity for all women and girls. Transforming the housing system is a vital part of this effort. Without access to safe, affordable housing, many women escaping family violence are left with impossible choices: remain in danger, move to another unsafe environment, or take an unaffordable and unsustainable path that deepens distress and instability.

We deeply value the cooperation of accommodation providers who have become an unintentional but essential part of the crisis response. However, it is unfair and unsustainable to place this responsibility on private businesses in the absence of adequate public options.

In 2024, 422 people who accessed Beyond Housing services identified domestic or family violence as their primary reason for seeking help.

One of our key responses is Safe Places—purposebuilt, federally funded crisis accommodation designed specifically with safety in mind. These properties are fully furnished and provide immediate access to specialist family violence supports for women and children.

Women escaping violence face not only physical risks but profound psychological harm. A secure, temporary home offers essential protection for both, creating breathing space to process trauma, plan next steps, regain agency, and shape their future.

Safe Places delivers exactly the kind of support women fleeing violence deserve—yet due to severe resource constraints, it remains out of reach for most. We operate only a limited number of these properties across our extensive region, and although we are actively expanding our portfolio, supply still falls far short of demand.

When dedicated crisis accommodation is unavailable, we turn to the private market—a

St Joseph's Primary Bike Ed On Wednesday the 12th of March we had a man named Bill Winters come to St Joseph’s to teach us about bike safety. We started in the classroom and got taught about indicating ‘left’ ‘right’ and ‘stop’. We learnt to wear helmets nice and tight or else they fall off our head, and to use the school crossing properly. We then walked out into the cooler conditions, but it didn’t dampen our spirits. We rode on the courts and weaved between cones and finally we were ready to hit the streets and go for a ride. The1/2’s stayed behind and did some more riding on the courts while the 3/4/5/6’s rode to the River Street swimming area, then back to the school crossing, where we practiced how to safely cross the road. We came back to class where we had a well-deserved fruit break.

I’m sure everyone had a great day of riding and learning. Thank you to Bill who organised this day.

The Year 1 and 2 students were excited to welcome some new friends to our school today! Gaambi Djinang Kindergarten students and their teachers spent an hour and a half with our Years 1 and 2 students playing, exploring and creating.

We worked in small groups to complete a colour treasure hunt, joined together as a team to keep the coloured balls on the parachute (and even running under) and we used our construction blocks and marble run game! It was great to see our students include the kinder students and for them to have so much fun together. After all the fun and games were complete, we enjoyed a picnic lunch together under the peppercorn trees!

This was the first of what will be many visits together.

Enjoying getting to know each other, playing and spending time with each other. Today was a great day for learning.

the applications was outstanding, with students clearly demonstrating their understanding of friendship skills, empathy, leadership, and problem-solving strategies.

Our classrooms have been busy exploring the U R Strong friendship program, building a shared language and understanding around healthy friendships, conflict resolution, and emotional awareness.

We are excited to share that 19 students have been successful and are now ready to complete their Friend-O-Leader training. We look forward to seeing them step into their leadership roles and support positive friendships across our school community.

RESULTS WEDNESDAY 4TH MARCH

We had 7 players for a round of Stroke.

The Winner of A,B & C Grades was the in form Moz Fowler 73net.

Moz was also the 9 hole Winner with 35net and managed N/P on the 8th.

18 hole balls down the line went to Moz 73net and Annette Mills on a C/B from Bev Brown both with 82net.

9 hole balls down the line went to Moz 35net and Annette Mills 39.5net.

Moz was the winner of the Seymour Club Voucher.

RESULTS WEDNESDAY 11TH MARCH We had 10 players but only 5 played 18 holes the rest played the 9 hole competition.

The Winner of A,B & C Grades once more was Moz Fowler with 34pts.

The 9 hole winner was also Marg Harrison with 20pts.N/P on the 3rd was Moz and the 16th Bev Brown.

We have changed the format for the distribution of balls down the line, so applying the new rules we have: 18 hole ball winners BEV BROWN ON A C/B from Marg Harrison both with 33 pts.

9 hole ball winners were Kylie Carmichael with 18pts and Monica Hurley and Moz with 17 pts.

With two teams playing in grand finals of midweek bowls, it was a nervous but confident approach shown by the Lakers bowlers and lo and behold they came home with the choccies, the bacon, medals and whatever else they could proudly claim. Both sides were victorious in close encounters and some highly entertaining bowling. Division two were victorious by twentyfour shots and will be promoted to Division one next season. Division five were also victorious, winning by thirteen shots and will now move up to Division four next season.

Before giving full details of grand finals and because this paper comes out on a fortnightly, the previous encounters with opposing teams need also to be given some air. Division two finished the season in second position and defeated Shepparton Park, 60/52, to move straight into the grand final.

Division five had a harder road to travel, finishing in fourth position and played off in a semifinal and preliminary final, winning both, to enter the grand final. The preliminary final was played against Seymour, and the Lakers won this game 58/17, giving the team a quiet confidence when going into the grannie.

Moving into their grand finals and being played on neutral dung hills, Division two went up against the highly rated Shepparton Golf, played at Tatura. Three Lakers teams opposed three Shep Golf teams; two games were drawn; the third game was won by Nagambie. Details as follows: Rink 1 was skippered by Gary Ryan and he was strongly supported by Roger Fraser, Jen McClure and Doug Condon, winning 36/12. Rink 2 was skippered by Gary Wastell and supported by Kaye Tennant, Lyn Sinden and John Tennant. A drawn result, 18/18. Rink 3 was skippered by who else, the evergreen

Porky Page with his support coming from Whispering Bill Boulton, Craig Fothergill and Kim Blennerhassett. Also, a drawn game,18/18. An overall victory to the Lakers of twenty-four shots, Lakers 72, Shepparton Golf 48.

Division Five was fought out by two teams to each side. Nagambie played the undefeated and very strong Eildon crew and it was played at the wellmanicured greens of Seymour VRI, being neutral turf for both clubs. There was a quiet confidence amongst the Lakers players going into the game and steel determination was evident from the first roll, with both Lakers teams taking early leads, and maintaining their gritty starts to the very end. On Rink 1, the result was a three-shot victory to the Lakers, 19/16. John Sinden was the skipper and he had resilient support from Noel Luff, Jan Goring and Tina Keady. Rink 2 was also victorious and in an overall team effort, skippered by Bardy McLeod and supported by Reg Dickinson, Peter Keady and Debbie Luff (she injured her normally used right arm recently and played with her left) the winning margin was ten shots, 23/13. The overall result was Nagambie 42, Eildon 29.

Three of the Lakers four sides (this included weekend teams) made finals this season, a fantastic achievement and with promotions to higher divisions next season there is a very real air of excitement about the place. New people have joined and brought with them ideas and experience from other clubs which has helped, matured and grown the culture of the Lakers, that it is a friendly and welcoming club. Well done to our committee, selectors and so many others, in particular our President, Joe Gattuso. He has served four terms and is tireless in his efforts to be open, friendly and honest in his approach to allcomers (your shout brother). So, until next time “Start where you are. Use what you have. Avenel Lawn Bowls Weekend Division 6.

Avenel played Mooroopna Golf in the Grand Final at Mooroopna last Saturday. With both rinks winning their respective games, Avenel claimed the premiership in the GVPA Weekend Pennant, 42 – 30. Only losing one game for the entire season in the first round, the grand final win capped of a successful season.

Scores were very close with many lead changes and drawn ends in the first half for Howard Geldard(s) Pam Pedder, Marion Gittus and Walter Pedder.

On the first end back from smoko Avenel scored a four which gave them an eight shot lead and set them up for an eight shot win 22 – 14.

Nagambie Tennis Saturday tennis may have finished with grand final just gone even though we were not in there it was great to head to Benalla and watch the fight between Terip and Benalla on section 2. The last three games where on and the difference was on point between them , as they we battling out for the grand final all three sets ended up in a tiebreaker, ended up being a draw and Terip ended up in winning the grand final by 1 set well played and great there community after summer they had.

Section two saw Avenal defeat Euroa .

This does not mean we are not playing tennis, Tuesday we are still having a lot of kids turn up for hot shots, great to see.

Wednesday night is still social night Tennis and Pickle Ball from 6-8 pm, going up until Easter, bar and bbq open for those who want to come and watch.

Easter raffle is on so please support our little club and grab a ticket of members.
