SADDLE UP Early-onset diagnosis inspires Avenel Equine Hospital nurse to bring community together for a night of hope, resilience and giving.

The local community is being invited to come together for an evening of inspiration, generosity and support as a special fundraising event is held at the Avenel Golf Club on Wednesday 29 April from 6pm to 8pm.

Hosted by the dedicated team at Avenel Equine Hospital, the fundraiser will raise vital funds for Parkinson’s research and the Riding for the Disabled Association Australia, with proceeds shared equally between the two causes.

The event has been initiated by Avenel Equine Hospital Surgical Nursing Supervisor Kathy Seach, whose recent diagnosis with earlyonset Parkinson’s disease at just 37 years of age has inspired her to take action and bring the community together for a meaningful cause.

Kathy shared that her diagnosis, while lifechanging, became the catalyst for something positive.

“At the age of 37, after a long process of tests and specialist appointments, I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease. It was a lifechanging moment, but it didn’t take away my determination. Horses have been part of my life since I was about 3 years old, they are not just my profession, but my passion and my strength. This fundraiser grew from a desire to turn something challenging into something positive, to raise awareness and support others facing similar journeys.”

Held during Parkinson’s Awareness Month, the event aims to not only raise much-needed funds but also build awareness and understanding of Parkinson’s disease within the wider community.

Adding to the evening’s program will be two highly respected guest speakers, Emma Booth and Kylie Christian, who will share their inspiring journeys of resilience, determination and success in the saddle.

Kathy said both women had made a lasting impression on her and would bring powerful stories to the event.

“Emma is one of many inspiring clients I’ve had the privilege of meeting through Avenel Equine Hospital. Seeing Emma’s passion, love, and determination made a lasting impression on me. she showed me that it’s still possible to ride and pursue what you love, even when my condition progresses. Her journey is truly inspiring, and I know her story would resonate deeply with others.

I came across Kylie’s story quite unexpectedly one evening when I couldn’t sleep. As I read about her journey, I found myself really connecting with her experiences it was both powerful and deeply personal. When I discovered she was available for public speaking, I immediately felt how impactful she would be for our clients and the wider community.

Bringing Emma and Kylie into this event felt like a natural choice. Their stories are not only inspiring, but also incredibly relatable, and I know they will

leave a lasting impact on everyone who attends.”

Kathy’s colleague, Avenel Equine Hospital’s Katie Wilcox, said the fundraiser reflects the kind of person Kathy is — dedicated, resilient and quietly determined.

“She has worked with us for a number of years now, starting with the stable staff team and quickly moving into the nursing team, before becoming our head surgery nurse last year,” Ms Wilcox said.

“During her time at AEH, she has completed her Cert IV in veterinary nursing, worked full time and excelled at her job, while also being a wonderful mum to her son Jax. “She was confronted with her Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2024 but has continued to put her all into everything she does. I can’t remember her ever taking a sick day, but I recall countless times where she has stepped in to cover for her colleagues and cared for patients that needed her.

“She is incredibly capable, calm, modest and unassuming but boy is this lady tough! We are so lucky to have her at AEH and I often look to her as a source of inspiration.”

Ms Wilcox said the idea for the fundraiser came directly from Kathy.

“This event is Kathy’s brain child. When she approached me with this idea I could feel the passion radiating from her and I feel honoured that she wanted to do it with AEH and bring this fantastic event to our community. I have no doubt that it will be a roaring success. Thank you Kathy.”

Entry to the fundraiser will be by gold coin donation, making the evening accessible for all members of the community to attend and show their support. The night will feature raffles, a silent auction and lucky door prizes, with a growing list of generous donations already being received from local businesses and supporters.

Kathy said the level of community backing so far had been overwhelming.

“The level of support from the community has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way. It shows just how much people care and how willing they are to come together for a good cause. Donations keep flowing in, not just from local supporters, but from far and wide as well. I never imagined that my little idea would inspire so much generosity and encouragement it’s been incredibly humbling and uplifting.”

Guests will also enjoy nibbles and refreshments, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment for community members to gather and support the important causes.

For Kathy, the event carries deep personal meaning beyond fundraising.

“It means a great deal. It’s about supporting people living with disabilities and recognising the challenges they face in accomplishing even the simplest everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. It’s also about showing that a diagnosis doesn’t define who you are or what you can achieve. The funds raised will help ensure that individuals like myself can hold hope for the future, whether through advancements toward a cure for Parkinson’s or the therapeutic benefits that horses bring to so many.”

Nagambie Community Senior Citizens Support Sought for Fundraising Event The next outing planned is to Ripponlea/ Como House on Tuesday 21st April. We still have spaces on the bus, we would love to get a few more to come along. The cost will be $45 covering bus and entry fees. A list for names is at the hall or email your details and we will add you on.

ATTENTION: TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS We have a very dedicated group of table tennis players (varied levels, so all welcome) that meet every Wednesday at 7pm at the Seniors Hall at 358 High Street. This activity is open to the public, young and old, so you don’t need to be a member to come and join in. Please spread the word to any possible interested players, as we really would appreciate a few more to attend to increase the size of the competition pool. If you would like to come, bring $5 and equipment can be supplied, turn up at 7pm each Wednesday (no breaks for school holidays). Call David on 0418 39 11 35 for further information.

We have introduced an invoice system as a reminder to members that the annual $5 fee was due on 1st January, and we appreciate all those who have paid using this system. It is very hard to remember what due dates are for all of the groups that we get involved in our community and we thought this reminder would be an efficient way to advise those who may have forgotten. It also helps with knowing if some previous members have changed addresses or no longer wish to be on the membership list. Please advise any change of details and also if those without emails, may now have one as this is the most efficient way to get information out.

Our next movie day will be Tuesday 28th April at 1pm held at the hall. The movie is, “We Bought a Zoo”. Come and enjoy the movie and the interval snacks, chill out for a few hours!

Movies are held on second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with the May date being on Tuesday, 12th May “Ghost” We have a full calendar planned for the year, and our social committee are working hard on bringing you some new and different excursions and experiences.

We have signed up to do the Bunnings BBQ for September 25 & 26th and final one for year is November 21st. There is a roster at the clubrooms if you think you can spare a few hours to help over at Seymour Bunnings on a Saturday morning please add your name, it will be greatly appreciated and help share the load.

Waterproofing Works to Begin on Seymour’s Historic Old Goulburn River Bridge Mitchell Shire Council is set to commence essential waterproofing works on Seymour’s Old Goulburn River Bridge to help protect the heritage structure from further weather damage and slow its deterioration.

The works align with Heritage Act requirements and follow Council’s decision in March 2025 to cancel the full restoration project due to significant costs, required borrowing, and the lack of external funding.

In July 2025, Councillors voted to maintain the bridge in its current condition, focusing on meeting conservation requirements and Heritage

Act obligations, with no further restoration planned.

To support this approach, Council has allocated $150,000 for the waterproofing project and committed to an ongoing program of surveillance and maintenance to prevent further deterioration.

Works are scheduled to begin on Monday 13 April and are expected to be completed by Monday 4 May, weather permitting.

During the construction period, residents can expect to see contractors, work vehicles, cranes, machinery and temporary work zones on site.

Exclusion zones will be established at each riverbank around the bridge’s abutments to ensure safe working areas for contractors and cranes, while also protecting the public.

There will be temporary impacts to users of the Goulburn River waterway, with exclusion zone buoys in place for boating traffic while cranes and workers are operating.

Council will provide updates if there are any changes to timing or site impacts.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said the focus was on protecting the bridge while adopting a financially responsible approach.

One Bite Can Kill: Act Now Before Snake Season Strikes Expressions of Interest sort for professional Snake Avoidance Training program It might only be mid-April, but the countdown to snake season has already begun and for local dog owners, the risk is real.

Every year, it happens. A dog darts into the grass, follows a scent, or investigates a flicker of movement. Seconds later, everything changes.

Snake bites are fast, silent and often unseen but their impact is immediate and devastating.

What follows is panic. A rushed trip to the vet. A bill that can climb beyond $4,000. And the harsh reality that even with urgent treatment, not every dog survives.

In those moments, instinct takes over. Owners try to pull their dog away, find the snake, or intervene and in doing so, can unknowingly put themselves in danger of being struck. What starts as a pet emergency can quickly become a human one.

It’s confronting but it’s also preventable.

Go Nagambie is encouraging residents to act

early this year, calling for Expressions of Interest in a professional Snake Avoidance Training program planned for September/October, ahead of peak snake activity.

The training will be delivered by Daniel Mannix from the Victorian Dog Training Academy, one of the most experienced providers in the state. Dogs are taught to recognise and actively avoid venomous snakes using real Tiger, Brown and Red-bellied Black snakes that have been professionally devenomised — meaning they have had their venom glands removed and pose no danger to dogs.

To further ensure safety, the snakes are kept cool prior to sessions, making them naturally slow-moving and lethargic during training.

This controlled approach allows dogs to safely experience the real sights, smells and behaviours of venomous snakes without any risk of harm.

And that realism is exactly what makes the training effective.

Dogs rely heavily on scent, and traditional training methods using non-venomous species have often failed because dogs can tell the difference. By exposing them to the real thing in a safe, controlled environment, this program teaches a genuine, instinctive avoidance response.

The sessions will be conducted in a rural-style

setting, designed to reflect the environments where most encounters occur, including sheds, gardens, open spaces and typical property surrounds. This helps reinforce practical, realworld learning so dogs are better prepared for situations they are likely to face at home or out walking.

Proposed Timing: September / October (Dates TBC)

For most dogs, just one session is enough to create a lasting behavioural response teaching them to recognise danger and move away.

Session Length: Approx. 4 hours

The cost is expected to be $400 per dog. While that may seem like a significant upfront expense, it pales in comparison to the financial and emotional cost of a snake bite. When faced with a life-or-death situation, there is no time to weigh up options, only time to react.

Planning ahead now could prevent panic later.

Sessions will be run in small groups, ensuring each dog receives individual attention, and if there is strong interest, multiple sessions may be scheduled.

Snake season is coming, it always does. The question is whether your dog will know to walk away.

Temporary Closure of Goulburn Weir Walkway for Essential Inspection Works Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) will temporarily close the public walkway across the Goulburn Weir structure from Tuesday 7 April 2026 to Tuesday 5 May 2026 to allow for essential works and a detailed inspection.

The closure is required to safely install bulkheads and work platforms so that thorough inspections of the weir can be carried out.

GMW Manager Storage Operations South Sam Wilkinson said it was important for the public to stay clear of the structure during the closure due to increased operational activities on site.

“The weir will be an active work site and will not be safe for the public during this

time,” he said.

“It’s important that people also stay clear of vehicles and equipment entering and exiting the area.”

Mr Wilkinson said the inspection was part of GMW’s routine maintenance program.

Nagambie Community Delivers Strong Support for Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal The Nagambie district has once again demonstrated its remarkable community spirit, raising a total of $24,479.78 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

This excellent result was driven by the dedicated efforts of the Nagambie, Bailieston, Wahring and Wirrate CFA brigades, who worked tirelessly collecting donations across the region. Their commitment played a key role in the success of the appeal, alongside the generosity of local residents and supporters who purchased raffle tickets and made donations to support children and families who rely on the services of the Royal Children’s Hospital.

A special acknowledgement must go to long time organiser and volunteer Pat Maroney, whose dedication over many years has been instrumental in coordinating the Nagambie fundraiser. Pat worked alongside a committed team of local volunteers who assisted with organising, fundraising and community engagement. Together, their efforts have helped build the appeal into the strong and successful community event it is today. Year after year, Pat has worked behind the scenes to bring people together and ensure the tradition continues.

The contribution of the Country Fire Authority brigades cannot be overstated. Their presence throughout the district, collecting donations on roadsides, travelling door to door and giving

their time so generously, has become a defining part of the appeal. The CFA’s support reflects the very best of community service, with volunteers once again stepping forward for a cause that touches so many families across Victoria.

Organisers have extended their sincere thanks to all CFA volunteers for their outstanding work and to every member of the community who contributed in any way. The funds raised will support the vital services provided by the Royal Children’s Hospital, which delivers specialist care to children and families from across Victoria and beyond.

This annual appeal remains an important event on the Nagambie calendar and continues to reflect the district’s strong commitment to supporting one of Victoria’s most important children’s hospitals.

A Proud History of Giving The Good Friday Appeal has a long and proud history dating back to 1931, when a group of Melbourne journalists organised a charity sports carnival to support the struggling children’s hospital. That first event raised just £427, but it laid the foundation for what would become one of Victoria’s most significant and enduring fundraising efforts.

In 1942, the appeal moved to Good Friday and introduced a full day radio broadcast, allowing donations to be phoned in from across the state.

This approach greatly increased community

participation and fundraising success, setting the format that continues today.

The involvement of the CFA began in 1951 and has since become one of the most recognisable elements of the appeal, with volunteers collecting donations on roadsides and throughout local communities. Their contribution remains vital, particularly in regional towns such as Nagambie, where brigade members play a leading role each year.

Over the decades, the appeal has grown alongside advances at the Royal Children’s

Hospital, helping fund facilities, equipment, research and patient care. What began as a small local fundraiser has evolved into a statewide tradition, raising millions each year and supporting children and families across Victoria and beyond.

Today, the Good Friday Appeal continues to bring communities together. For towns like Nagambie, it is not only a fundraising effort but also a reflection of long standing values such as generosity, volunteerism and a shared commitment to helping others.

Nagambie Library upgrade works Council is about to award a tender for upgrade works at the Nagambie Library to create a modern, accessible community space.

These include making the toilets fully accessible, installation of a small split system, lighting upgrades, installation of an automatic entrance door, new blackout blinds and improving soundproofing for a better library experience. The plans also include the development of an inviting outdoor area that includes a waterproof shade covering.

Council also plans to introduce an Open Library model, which will allow community access seven days a week.

GMW Storage Officer Wins Prestigious Victorian Water Industry Award Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) senior storage officer Holly Westbrook has been named the 2026 Victorian New Operator of the Year by the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA).

The 24-year-old received the award at WIOA’s recent Victorian Awards event in Bendigo. Westbrook works as a senior storage officer at Cairn Curran Reservoir, where she contributes to the operation, maintenance and safety of six storages in the Loddon/Campaspe region of north-central Victoria.

The annual ‘Victorian New Operator of the Year’ award recognises outstanding performance, initiative and attention to detail from water industry professionals employed in Victoria for less than five years.

Westbrook was recognised for her innovative use of technology, including drones, to improve site safety at GMW structures, as well as her strong achievements in just two years with the water corporation.

She said she was very honoured to receive the award.

“I'm just so thankful for all the people around me that helped me get to this point,” Miss Westbrook said.

“Without the support I've had, without the opportunities that GMW has given me, I wouldn't have got there.”

Miss Westbrook said she hoped her award win would encourage more young people — particularly young women — to consider careers in the water industry.

“When I first started, I was the only female storage officer within GMW. That alone was very daunting at the time,” she said.

“Now there’s a second one, Verity (Hore). We’re so close because there’s the two of us and honestly I really love that.

“I would love for us to be able to build on that even more. I would love for more girls to see that I won an award in a male-dominated field and go ’hey maybe that could be me when I’m older’ or ‘this looks like a fun job I would like to try.’”

The Institute of Water Administration (IWA) sponsored the award. IWA president Rob Murphy presented it to Westbrook at the event.

“In just two years, Senior Storage Officer Holly Westbrook has made a significant impact across multiple water storages in north-central Victoria,” Mr Murphy said at the event.

Holy Smokes! 30 Mini Mokes Set to Star at 49th Historic Winton A convoy of 30 Mini Mokes will take centre stage at the 49th Historic Winton motorsport event, thanks to the Moke Owners Club of Victoria, which is celebrating 60 years of the iconic vehicle in Australia.

The display will feature at Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla on 30-31 May 2026. Based in Melbourne, the club has around 300 members across Victoria and the Eastern Seaboard.

Trip Coordinator Ash Sharkey from Bendigo said the Mini Moke’s enduring appeal lies in its fun, versatile and hardy nature.

“The Moke is one of the most versatile cars around and I use mine to get to work every day,” Ash said.

“It’s done about 68,000 km since I restored it five years ago!

“We have a great time as a club, moking all over

Victoria and beyond, with a recent trip to see our Moke mates in Tasmania. Other Moking groups around the country also run big events such as a biennial roundup in Tamworth, but Mokes are just as reliable off road with some owners venturing farther afield to places like the Simpson Desert or on holidays to permitted beaches.

Ash noted that for much of the 1970s, the Mini Moke was the cheapest car in Australia.

“My Moke was my Dad’s and he was the second owner.”

Ash said the Moke is particularly popular with camping enthusiasts, and he plans to camp at Historic Winton himself.

He said it was first used to go round in second gear as a guard’s car at a chemical waste facility in Melbourne.

“I’m 24 and Dad bought the car at about the same age, so it’s been part of the family lifestyle for a long time,” Ash said. “It was in good condition, but Dad still chose to do it up including having the shell hot dip galvanised in Shepparton.”

“Dad had to talk the galvanisers into doing it as they didn’t know if it would work,” he said. “They did,

New ways to find the cheapest fuel price Fuel prices continue to bite across regional Victoria, and for communities like ours where driving is a daily necessity rather than a choice, the pressure on household budgets is being felt more than ever.

In response, the Allan Labor Government has introduced new features aimed at helping locals better navigate rising fuel costs and make more informed decisions at the bowser.

The Servo Saver feature within the Service Victoria app now makes it easier to spot both the cheapest and most expensive fuel in your area or along your regular commute whether that’s heading into Seymour, Shepparton, or along the Goulburn Valley Highway.

A key update is the introduction of a clear ‘Highest Price’ warning, displayed in red when users open the app. This highlights the most expensive fuel options nearby, helping drivers avoid overpaying. At the same time, the app continues to mark the cheapest fuel in green, giving motorists a quick and easy comparison

before filling up.

For regional drivers who often travel longer distances between towns, these improvements could make a noticeable difference over time.

The update also includes a more user-friendly interface, making it simpler to see which service stations stock specific fuel types, an important feature for those planning longer trips across the region.

Since launching in October, Servo Saver has attracted more than 520,000 users across Victoria, reflecting strong demand for tools that bring greater transparency to fuel pricing.

The government has also stepped up enforcement, with more than $80,000 in fines issued to over 25 fuel retailers since 10 March for failing to report prices correctly.

This follows the introduction of new anti-price gouging laws in March, requiring fuel retailers to report prices daily and comply with a price cap. These changes mean Victoria now has what

is described as the most comprehensive and reliable set of daily fuel data in the country.

Data collected is also being shared with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to support broader oversight of fuel pricing.

Minister for Consumer Affairs Nick Staikos said the reforms are already having an impact.

“Our anti-price gouging laws are making a real difference – and we are cracking down on any retailers who are willfully trying to rip off Victorians.”

“With these changes it’ll now be even easier to avoid retailers ripping you off and find the cheapest fuel.”

Labor Delivers $2.7 Million Food Relief Package for Victorian Families The Victorian Labor Government is providing an immediate $2.7 million food relief package to support families struggling with the rising cost of living.

Victorian families are being hit hard by increasing prices, while the organisations supporting them are also facing rising costs. No family should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Foodbank Victoria will receive $900,000 to keep food moving to frontline services that need it most. A further $1.1 million will support seven regional foodshares in Shepparton, Mildura, Wodonga, Moira Shire, Geelong, Bendigo, Warrnambool and the Regional Food Security Alliance.

SecondBite and FareShare will share $200,000 to rescue and redistribute surplus food, while OzHarvest will receive $200,000 to deliver more meals to families in need.

Sikh organisations are already on the ground providing vital food relief to local families. The Victorian Sikh Gurdwaras Council, Sikh Volunteers Australia, Gurduara Council of Victoria and Australian Sikh Support will share in $200,000 to continue their important work.

Community Information & Support Victoria (CISVic) will receive $100,000 to keep supporting families who turn to them as a first point of contact.

This latest investment builds on the Allan Labor Government’s record funding for food relief in last year’s Budget.

While the package won’t solve every challenge facing families, it delivers immediate relief to help Victorians right now as the government continues to develop longer-term solutions to ease cost-of-living pressures.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the funding would help local organisations continue their critical work.

“We know Victorian families are doing it tough, this investment means our local Foodshare’s can keep doing what they do best and provide immediate support to people who need it most,” she said.

“I thank our local food relief organisations who are doing extraordinary work and Labor is proud to back them.”

Social Housing Boom Transforms Goulburn Valley Communities

Neighbouring Moira and Greater Shepparton are experiencing a significant social housing expansion, with Beyond Housing set to complete construction of 44 new properties within the coming weeks.

The housing support charity completed 19 properties in March and is on track to finish a further 25 in April. Nine of these houses have been funded by Homes Victoria, with the Peter and Lyndy White Foundation funding the other 35.

Beyond Housing CEO Celia Adams said these new homes would make a profound difference in the lives of locals.

“These new homes will provide housing for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. These are people whose kids go to school, who volunteer, who play for their local sports teams, and who are part of their communities,” she said.

“The homes will allow people to remain part of their community and provide a place where they can grow and thrive.”

Beyond Housing owns and manages more than 1000 homes across the Goulburn and Ovens Murray regions and is on track to build a further 319 by the end of 2027. These houses are rented to people on the Victorian Housing Register at below-market

Support Available for Those Needing Stock and Domestic Water Amid Dry Conditions With dry conditions continuing across the region, GoulburnMurray Water (GMW) is reminding customers that support is available for those in need of water and urging anyone without the proper authorisations to contact GMW to discuss their options.

GMW staff have been dealing with ongoing incidents of people illegally pumping water from GMW storages and waterways. In recent years, a number of cases have involved people parking at boat ramps or beside waterways on public roads and pumping water into trailer tanks.

GMW Water Delivery Services General Manager Warren Blyth said anyone caught doing this would face legal action.

“Water theft affects everyone in the community because there's limited water to go around. Illegally pumping water from storages and waterways means less for everyone else and is not the way to receive important water supply,” he said.

“With water supplies under pressure, everyone needs to do the right thing and follow the rules.

“To ensure fairness in how it is used, we take a zero-tolerance approach to any form of unauthorised take.”

“People in urgent need of water also have the option of using emergency water supply points.”

There are approximately 300 emergency water supply points across Victoria. These bores and standpipes allow people to draw water for emergency stock, domestic or rural needs.

People can search for nearby emergency water supply points on the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action website.

Further support for primary producers is available through the Farm Drought Support Grants program. Eligible farmers statewide can receive up to $5,000 (ex-GST) as a co-contribution grant to help offset the costs of water carting. The grants are administered through Rural Finance Victoria.

Rise in fuel theft hits regional farming communities The Nationals Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, has raised alarm over a growing wave of fuel theft targeting farmers, warning that a worsening police vacancy crisis is leaving regional communities dangerously exposed.

Ms Cleeland said the sharp rise in incidents across regional Victoria comes at a time when policing resources are stretched thin, with more than 1,500 vacancies across Victoria Police and a drastic reduction in specialist farm crime officers.

She said the shortage of frontline officers is having real and immediate consequences for rural communities, particularly those already grappling with rising costs and economic pressure.

“This is what happens when you don’t have enough police on the ground,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We now have just two farm crime officers for the entire state, and at the same time, farmers across our region are waking up to find their fuel tanks drained overnight.

“This is not petty theft. This is targeted, organised crime hitting farmers where it hurts.”

Fuel theft in rural areas is not only increasing in frequency but also in scale and sophistication, with many incidents involving large quantities of fuel being siphoned under cover of darkness. Ms Cleeland said the nature of these thefts suggests coordinated efforts rather than opportunistic acts, placing additional pressure on farmers already operating in a challenging environment.

For many, the consequences are immediate and severe. With heavy reliance on fuel for machinery, irrigation, and transport, even a single theft can disrupt operations entirely and delay critical work.

Ms Cleeland emphasised the financial strain this places on farming families already dealing with tight margins and rising input costs.

“At a time when margins are tight, losing a tank of fuel can stop work completely,” she said.

“Farmers are doing it tough enough without being hit by crime on top of everything else.”

Ms Cleeland said the surge in fuel theft reflects a broader pattern across regional Victoria, where declining police resources are being felt at the community level. She argued that the reduction in specialised units, combined with unfilled vacancies, has created gaps that are being exploited by organised criminals.

“When you strip back dedicated units and leave vacancies unfilled, communities feel it,” she said.

“Right now, farmers are being left to fend for themselves.”

She said the reduction of the farm crime unit to just two officers statewide has weakened prevention and response efforts, and is calling on the Victorian Government to urgently address the issue by restoring resources to rural policing and providing clarity on future support.

Ms Cleeland has called on the Minister for Police to explain why the farm crime unit had been reduced to just two officers and what immediate action would be taken to rebuild support for regional communities.

“Our farmers deserve to feel safe on their own properties,” she said.

“I will keep pushing for the resources and support they need.”

While continuing to advocate for increased resourcing, Ms Cleeland is also encouraging landholders to take practical steps to reduce their risk of theft, including installing locks on fuel tanks, improving lighting and considering surveillance where possible.

“I know these properties are large and security isn’t always easy, but even small steps can make a real difference in deterring theft,” she said.

She also urged farmers and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“If you have experienced fuel theft or suspicious activity, report it to police and let my office know so we can continue to build the case for proper resourcing where it is needed most.”

St Joseph's Primary Community Spirit on Display at School Easter Egg Hunt Students, teachers, and families came together in a vibrant celebration at St Joseph’s Primary School in Nagambie on the last day of term, as local schools and early learning centres reunited for the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt—now in its third year and continuing to grow in both scale and enthusiasm.

What started as a small partnership between a few neighbouring educators has evolved into a highly anticipated event for Nagambie’s youngest learners.

This year, more than 100 children aged between six months and seven years took part, eagerly searching for brightly coloured eggs hidden throughout the playground at St Joseph’s. Educators worked collaboratively to ensure every child felt included and part of the celebration. Senior students also played an important role, helping to organise and hide the eggs for the younger participants.

Organisers emphasised that the event is about much more than chocolate. “This is really about building connections,” Mikayla Nicholson, Service Leader of Nagambie Preschool said. “It gives children the chance to meet peers before starting school, allows families to connect, and provides educators with an opportunity to collaborate beyond the classroom.”

The event reflects a shared commitment among local education providers to nurture a strong sense of community from an early age.

By bringing together various schools and centres, it helps ease the transition into formal schooling while strengthening relationships across the sector.

Parents have praised the initiative for its positive impact. One parent noted, “It’s fantastic to see the community come together. My child gets to meet future classmates in a fun, relaxed setting, which makes starting school feel much less intimidating.” Children also enjoyed reconnecting with friends they know outside of school from other services.

Term 1 Reflection Term 1 was a busy one, from welcoming our new Foundation students and their families to our community, an excursion to Melbourne Museum, swimming carnival and lessons, Harmony Day, and Easter celebrations, along with many more amazing experiences. As a staff, we reflected on some of our highlights of Term 1:

-Mel Watching all the students come together for Harmony Day, eager to share and learn about Indigenous and other cultures that make our country special. Seeing the students make and share cultural foods, and celebrate our different backgrounds showed inclusiveness in action.

They each made heartfelt cards for him and are always asking questions about him.

As the event continues to grow, organisers are already exploring opportunities to expand, including introducing additional activities such as sports afternoons and involving more community groups in future celebrations.

Hoping my intervention groups are making a difference to those students, the respect shown in the Easter liturgy and the comradery amongst the children.

“The growth has been amazing,” St Joseph’s principal Maree Findlay said. “Each year brings more smiles, stronger connections, and greater community support. Our local IGA supermarket has been incredibly generous in donating eggs for the hunt. While each service contributes, the extra support is especially appreciated given the rising cost of chocolate. That’s what keeps this event going.”

Term One has been such a wonderful start to the year. It has been a joy to watch students grow in confidence, take on challenges, and support one another. Their hard work is really paying off, and we are so proud of the positive, engaged learning happening every day.

Avenel Primary In STEM Students have been learning how designers create things to meet our needs. We explored the difference between needs and wants, and investigated everyday items like bags looking at their parts, materials, and special features that make them useful for students.

Prep students planned and created their own playdough houses. They drew designs including windows, doors, and walls, before building 2D or 3D models using playdough and sticks, focusing on making their houses strong and safe.

Last Friday, as part of cultural diversity week, the Goulburn Valley Library organised a guest speaker to visit our school.

Our Grade 3/4s were fortunate to meet Ras Ato, who is from Ghana. He presented to the group, sharing information about himself, his culture and how he became an author.

Ras has written a children’s books that he read with our students. The stories are fable style stories with animals as the characters, set in Africa.

He also taught our students a native song and allowed them to ask questions about his life as an author and in Ghana.

After the experience, we discussed the highlights with our students.

Teddy, Maverick, Olive and Mila explained that they loved the stories and particularly the illustrations.

Teddy: “My favourite story was the Tortoise and the Birds Party, because it had a clever character and end to the story.”

Mila: “I enjoyed hearing about his life in Africa. I liked the language he used and the way the stories were different.”

Olive: “I liked his stories and the beautiful pictures; they really looked like Africa.”

Mila and Olive also agreed that he was ‘crazy and funny.’ He wanted everyone to have a nice time learning about his culture.

Call continues for Koala Protection Act (KPA) The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is still fighting for a national Koala Protection Act (KPA), grounded in a simple principle: the rule of law must protect Australia’s wildlife.

For four decades the Foundation has argued that the Koala, and all other species that call these forests home, deserve their own dedicated legislation — a law strong enough to properly safeguard habitat and ensure that the species survives for future generations.

In 2000, Deborah Tabart OAM, chair of the Australian Koala Foundation, convened a national legal summit bringing together Australian and international lawyers, scientists and conservation organisations to examine whether existing environmental laws could adequately protect the Koala. At the time they evaluated 22 different documents from State jurisdictions and by and large all agreed they were not working.

At the time, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 had just come into force. After two days of discussions, participants encouraged the Australian Koala Foundation to allow the new legislation an opportunity to operate before pursuing separate Koala-specific law, a decision that has been met with much regret from the Foundation.

Why? Because more than two decades later, the results are clear. Bob Brown, then a Senator, did identify and support such a law in 2014 but in 2016, the “big” conservation groups, thinking that Labor would win the election, decided to abandon “species specific legislation” and the rest of course is history, says Tabart. The Koala went from Vulnerable to Endangered in this time.

One of the most significant weaknesses of the EPBC Act is that land clearing does not automatically trigger federal protection, even though it is recognised as a threatening process. Only the Federal Environment Minister has the power to trigger that Act. The current minister is Murray Watt, the sixteenth person to hold the role since Tabart joined the Australian Koala Foundation in 1988, nearly 40 years ago. A Koala Protection Act would remove Ministerial approval and also “Permits to Take” which is by and large a “licence to kill”.

In practice, projects are frequently “called in” or granted “controlled action” status. This means developments may proceed while further environmental information is gathered, a process that can allow large areas of Koala habitat to be cleared while assessments continue.

For the Koala, time lost often means habitat lost and as a result suffering illness including chlamydia.

AKF believes that Australia must now consider stronger environmental accountability. Around the world there is increasing discussion about new legal frameworks, including the concept of Ecocide — recognising severe environmental destruction as a crime.

The idea that the law evolves to protect what humanity values is not new.

Following the atrocities of World War II, the Nuremberg Trials established legal principles that led to the international recognition of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity.

Last week also marked International Women's Day, a moment to reflect on individuals whose leadership helped shape the modern world. Deborah Tabart OAM recognises and honours the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, a former First Lady who championed global peace in the years following World War I through international efforts that eventually evolved into the United Nations.

Many suggest the international system she helped inspire is now struggling to manage a world where “might over right” is again being tested. Some argue the UN Charter must evolve to meet the realities of the twenty-first century — and there is confidence that dedicated leaders around the world are working towards that goal.

The same principle applies to environmental protection. When laws are no longer strong enough to protect what matters, they must be strengthened.

The call for stronger environmental protection also comes at a time when citizens are increasingly engaged in planning decisions that affect wildlife habitat. Submissions to the South-East Queensland Regional Plan have highlighted ongoing concerns about land clearing, habitat fragmentation and long-term planning for wildlife across Queensland.

Younger conservationists are now raising many of the same questions that have been asked for decades — about clearing limits, planning horizons and the continued loss of primary Koala habitat.

The Australian Koala Foundation believes the answer is clear: Australia needs a law designed specifically to protect the Koala and its habitat across the nation.

A Koala Protection Act would ensure that the survival of the Koala is not left to flawed planning systems but safeguarded by enforceable national legislation.

The Australian Koala Foundation remains confident that such a law will be achieved.

Nagambie Golf RESULTS WEDNESDAY 1ST APRIL We only had 5 players for a round of Stableford. The winner of all Grades, the Monthly Medal and The Seymour Club Voucher was Annette Mills with 35pts.

The9 hole winner was Irene Keogh on a C/B from Annette both with 17pts.

N/P on the 8th was Annette.

18 hole balls down the line went to Moz Fowler with 33pts.

9 hole balls went to Annette.

RESULTS WEDNESDAY 8TH APRIL The day was perfect for golf but we only managed to have 4 players. We only played a 9 hole competition which was Stroke.

The winner was Kylie Carmichael with 51net.

9 hole balls went to Moz Fowler with 52net.

No N/P winners.

Nagambie Little Athletics End of Year Presentation for the 25/26 season. Our fourth Season.

It has been another fantastic and very busy season; we increased our registrations to a new record of 93 athletes competing from under 6 to under 13 which is amazing.

We started 4 years ago with 49 athletes.

We really hope to see our older athletes continue next season so we have our first year of under 14’s which would be exciting.

We have been able to purchase starting blocks for our u/11 to u/13 athletes thanks to a new sponsor Bushby Cleaning which is a great addition for our older athletes to learn when they compete at regional levels.

Across the season we have had a huge total of 1280 Pb’s and 164 centre records broken throughout the season.

This is incredible and a huge well-done to all you kids for striving to being your best and improving each week, this is what Little Aths is all about.

This season saw Nagambie Little Athletics represent for the first time at a number of Regional Events. In June we were at the Regional Cross Country Competition in Rochester, in November the Relay Championships in Albury and then in February Regional Track and Field Championships in Bendigo. Every single athlete that competed at these events did an amazing job , they all gave it their best shot, supported each other and celebrated every result and we saw some beautiful sportsmanship shown aswell. We came away with 6 medals from the Track and Field Carnival which was outstanding, well done to Ivy, Harper, Owen, River, Scout and Sebastian. We then had three athletes that went onto compete at State in Melbourne Harper, Owen and Scout , again another outstanding effort from these guys. Competing at these events is not always about the wins but it’s the friendships and memories the kids come away with and also the parents I think have a bit of fun aswell.

We also enjoyed a fun evening with an interclub meet with Seymour and Kilmore Little Athletics, we hope to make this an annual event in our season calender.

We also had Kelvin Lubeck and some of his athletes from Kelfit running club in Seymour come and join us for a morning to give some extra tips and tricks.
