It’s Time to Roll Again

After more than a year of a complete life First paved around 1914, the Mohawk trail change that no one would ever have is one of the Nation’s first scenic roadways. considered to experience; from mask wearing, social distancing, lockdowns, isolations and more – our world is slowly coming back enough for us to roll as a group and enjoy the experiences of traveling together as a club once again. This year we will be heading north and east to check some fantastic riding through the Deerfield River valley and northern Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts, New York’s Taconic State Park region and the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont.

NWMC 2021

Day One – Thursday August 19th To ease traffic situations and congestion with leaving Long Island, we will meet at the Mobil Station Rest area on the Hutchinson River Parkway and depart from there. Our route will have us meandering through Westchester and Putnam Counties then enter Connecticut’s Litchfield County where we will ride Rt 41 north to Massachusetts along the western valley of Mount Washington State Forest. This will lead us to our lunch stop destination in Sheffield, MA at the Blue Door Market & Café.

After enjoying what the local cuisine has to offer, we will head out northward again checking out some of the backroads through the western Berkshire Mountain region that, for the most part, are the roads were the locals travel to our hotel in Greenfield, MA.

Our travel distance for Thursday from the Hutchinson Rest area is approximately 200 miles. There will be planned rest/fuel stops and possibly a n unplanned stop or two. Never know what one will find to explore along the roads less traveled. The plan is for the club to enjoy dinner together in the town of Greenfield.

Day Two – Friday August 20th

NWMC 2021

Once gathered in the morning, the club will head out for a 175 mile journey of scenic roadways that will include the historic Mohawk Trail, Massachusetts Rt 2 with a rest stop in the home town of Williams College, Williamstown, MA. After a reload of caffeine or whatever your fancy is, we will continue westward of Rt 2 into New York State where the Mohawk Trail become the Taconic Trail through the Taconic Ridge State Forest. From there its slightly north and back east to roll into Bennington, Vermont with a stop at the Hemming Motor News Vintage Gas Station and Museum.

After a quick tour of the museum, our journey will take us further north in Vermont to Manchester Center where we will stop for lunch and have some time for shopping to check out all the shops in the area – perhaps we may even stumble upon a good deal or two.

Manchester Center The town center offers a wide array of Local shopping and eateries to explore. Plus, the Outlets Store include just about everything for the fashion oriented as well as a couple of restaurants and even a pinball arcade.

Before we shop or eat too much, the club will gather up to finish our last leg of Fridays journey on some scenic rolling roadways through the Green Mountain National Forest, with us taking Route 30, Route 100 and Route 112 back to our home base hotel in Greenfield, MA.

Friday evening will be open for club members to explore the nearby area for dinner in either the town of Greenfield or head west a few miles to the scenic town of Shelburne Falls to check out the waterfalls and local eateries and perhaps take a scroll across the Bridge of Flowers

Day Three – Saturday 21st Just because its our final day of the Summer Vacation, it does not mean the journey is completely over. Our motorcycles will just be barely warmed up on our return to Long Island when we will do a stop at the Yankee Candle Factory.

Now it would not be a motorcycle trip without checking out some vintage motorcycles, so we will head southwards for about 55miles via a combination of state routes and interstate to the New England Motorcycle Museum in Vernon, Connecticut to wander through the collection and reminisce a little of past owned or wanted to own motorcycles.

Once we are done dreaming on wishing upon old motorcycles, our final leg back to Long Island can be addressed several ways:  A combination of back, state, interstate riding to Bridgeport Ferries to Long Island’s Port Jefferson  A straight shot to the Bridgeport Ferry Station  And for those that opt not to ride the waters of the Long Island Sound, they can roll back to New York via the Merritt Parkway or I-95.

We put together a nice plan for members to enjoy a wide assortment of riding roads, little shopping, some eating and the enjoyment of camaraderie. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the weather to be on our side; but no matter what, we will have a great time.

***Note: visiting the listed museums will be based on their schedule of operation and/or if there are any covid restrictions still in place.
