Kensington Golf & Country Club There’s something special about Kensington Golf and Country Club.
Kensington is a Private Country Club that boasts a world-class golf course, seven clay tennis courts, a Junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, a fullservice fitness center, and extensive social/dining options. It’s been named “Best Private Country Club” by Naples Daily News three times and it has hosted numerous U.S. Open Qualifiers, most recently in May of 2016. Additionally, Kensington recently hosted the U.S. Ladies Amateur Open Qualifier in July of 2016. However, when you talk to members, the first thing they always mention is the community. “I’m a third year member and, right-away, I was welcomed into the community like an old friend,” commented Tom Jennings, who came to Naples from New Jersey. He added, “I think we all get to know each other because of the size. I don’t think there’s anybody there that I haven’t met at least once.” Intimacy is the cornerstone of the Kensington experience. It’s a tight-knit community with just under 300 golf members. In addition to golf and tennis leagues, members meet at the club for regular social events including wine tasting nights, Friday night dances, bridge groups, book clubs, and Pilates classes. You can feel the warmth when you walk into the club. The members and staff treat each other like family. When members walk into the club, they are always welcomed by a staff member who knows them on a first name basis. Every effort is made to create ‘magical moments’. The members give back to the staff for this exceptional treatment in many ways, culminating with the Annual Staff Christmas Party where the members serve the staff. GolfCoastMagazine.com

Of course, people come to Kensington for the golf. Tom was thrilled the first time he played Kensington, saying that, “The golf course is certainly the best of the gated communities. The first time I played it, I came back the next day.” The Robert Trent Jr. designed golf course is built around a 20-acre nature preserve. Each hole is designed to complement the environmental aspects of the property. One unique feature is the coquina shell waste areas that replace traditional cart paths. This, along with the fact that the holes are insulated from the property lines, gives the course a natural flow that is never disrupted by the community. The design of the course is often based on deception. There are plenty of risk/reward opportunities, and each hole takes on its own personality. On top of that, each of the holes have up to 8 tee locations, giving the grounds crew the opportunity to change the entire dynamic of many holes. Dick Erick, who has been the Head Golf Professional at Kensington for over 26 years, shared his thoughts on the course:

“This creation of Robert Trent Jones Jr. is totally unique to Southwest Florida. The playing characteristics of the course incorporate strategy and finesse. In most cases the long hitter does not get a distinct advantage. The greens are not large or over undulated but have distinctive movement with rather subtle rolls built into the design. On occasion a risky shot will result in your ball finding a ball collection area just off the greens edge. You are assured of many challenging putts over the course of a round. One major design feature of the golf course is its versatility. The design of the tee complexes have up to 7 or 8 different tee locations. This helps create not only the variety of yardages but also many different angle changes to the holes. Implementing crushed coquina shell material as our transition areas also helps alleviate the problem of having too many hard cart paths. The transition areas are an integral playing surface as well as providing a beautiful esthetic appeal and contrast. The most consistent comment from our members, and guests, is they never get tired of playing the course.”

demand. Members are not required to live in the surrounding neighborhood, and many come to the course from the beaches and surrounding area. Kensington is centrally located on Pine Ridge Road one mile west of the I-75, making it convenient from almost anywhere in Naples.
It’s clear that the members take a great deal of pride in Kensington. The club is memberowned, and you can see it in the way the course is maintained. The course is always immaculate and the board of directors is constantly working to make the membership experience better. Steve described the unique experience at Kensington when he said, “I’ve played nearly every course in the area. This one is special to me. Everyone knows each other, we party together, and the staff are family.”
Bruce and Susan Armstrong joined Kensington in May 2000 when they bought a home in the community. Bruce recalled, “We went around with a realtor who knew golf courses. We were looking for something that we could play over and over again and not get bored. Kensington has a wonderful layout, is always in great shape, and you can walk it year-round. We’re so happy that we were steered in this direction.”

Membership Options Full Golf Membership A Full Golf Member is entitled to use all of the golf, tennis, swimming, fitness and social facilities of the Club. Golf Members are entitled to a seven-day sign-up privilege to reserve golf tee times and tennis court times. Non-Refundable Initiation Fee: $38,000 2016 Dues, Capital Fee, Capital Reserve: $1,154/mo. Individual Golf Membership An Individual Golf Member (the one member) is entitled to use all of the golf as described above. In addition, the Member is given 22 guest passes each year, two each month except February. A Spouse or Significant Other has full social privileges, but cannot play or be a guest for golf. Use the Right Knee for Perfect Pitching Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, Master PGA Professional When I worked for the great Ken Venturi, he stressed how important it was to use the right knee for your little chip and pitch shots. Many amateurs swing down into the ball with only their arms. This leads to weak, off-line shots that are also frequently thin or fat. Their hands and wrists flop up (as seen in photo 1) and making solid contact is difficult. Photo Two shows how my student Terry has kicked in his right knee a little bit to start his downswing. This will get the leg doing more of the work and will let you keep your hands and wrists out of it more. Terry’s arms, hands and club are all pointing toward the target and he’s finished with a solid left wrist position that will lead to crisp, solid contact every time. Dramatic Renovation of The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club Golf Course The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club will complete a dramatic renovation – almost reinvention – of its championship golf course this November. The resort’s course is being redesigned with input from golf icon and acclaimed course designer Jack Nicklaus, who has a historical tie to the resort. The Jack Nicklaus redesign is being done in collaboration with noted course architect John Sanford of Sanford Golf Design. This major $9 million project follows $50 million in impressive renovations and enhancements at the resort over the last few years. The total redesign of the resort’s course began in April, and the entire project will be complete this November, with the course fully operational and reopening on November 17, 2016, according to the beachfront resort’s General Manager Jason Parsons. Jack Nicklaus is helping to celebrate his past and that of The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club
by reshaping the future of this iconic golf course. It was in 1951, on a family vacation to Naples, Florida, and a friendly round of golf alongside his father, that the Ohio native accomplished the very impressive feat of first breaking 40 over nine holes on the resort’s course, shooting a 37. Old Corkscrew Golf Club Old Corkscrew is pure golf – no residential homes surround the 18-hole Nicklaus Signature designed golf course. Located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples on 275-acre magnificently wooded acres, the course is carved from the natural terrain of native oaks, towering slash pines and native vegetation. Tips From Local PGA Professionals Start Short in Your Warm-Up Christian Sheehan Pelican’s Nest Golf Club
Have you ever gone to a baseball game and watched a pitcher warm up? They start in the outfield with ten to twenty throws from twenty feet. The next ten or twenty are from sixty feet. The final ten to twenty are what they call “long tosses” from one hundred feet or longer. But they never go straight to the mound throwing heat! And that is what too many golfers attempt to do when they arrive at the course. Never mind for the first time after a long layoff. Start your pre-round warm up with little pitch shots, then some 9-irons, then some 5-irons, and then the woods. Stretch yourself into the full swing, and you’ll find your rhythm earlier in the round than usual. Practice Your Putting Trey Sones Alico Family Golf
I believe putting is the most important part of the golf game. Everyone should practice putting at least 15 minutes a day. Work on this simple and easy drill to improve your putting. Put two tees down the length of your Putter. Put another tee down at least 3 feet away. Make sure the putt is a straight putt. Make your putting stroke through the two tees feeling like a pendulum stroke. Do not hit the two tees. You will feel your shoulders working not your hands or wrist. While doing these practice putts see the ball hit the tee 3 feet away. Try to work on this for 30 times a day for six weeks. Putting-Pace Drill Jeffrey Raimer West Bay Club
During the summer months in South Florida we have many different types of greens speeds at various reciprocal courses and our very own course. A good way to work on your pace is to use the “tee method” you see below in the picture. Most players are trained to look at the hole when putting and your brain picks up that specific distance. We all have several putts a round that just fall 1” – 3” short smack in the middle of the hole. When you go out to warm up or have a practice session, stick a tee 18” behind the cup, have your eyes look through the hole to the tee so that your brain adjusts to this distance. You will find yourself making firmer contact with the ball, increasing your pace and making more putts. Knocking the ball 2 feet past the hole will help keep the ball online when dealing with grain on Bermuda greens. You need to be confident in making two footers, even if you should miss one a round, the three to four putts you will make because of your improved pace more than makes up for that one missed put. So, next time out simply stick a tee directly behind the hole 18” and putt the ball to the tee, watch your putts drop in the hole. Have fun practicing with this drill, it can be used on short, medium or long putts.
