You may have thought, at some point, that your golf car is expensive. Whether you were purchasing a new or used golf car, a pack of batteries, or just a few accessories, the price of a golf car and its upkeep can get pricey. After reading this, you will be comfortable with your golf car spend. Originally reported in Bloomberg earlier this month, golf cars are an expensive delicacy afforded only by the mega rich in a small corner of Hong Kong. Would you believe that golf car prices are topping those of a Tesla or Porsche? In a small residential community called Discovery Bay, outside of Hong Kong, golf cars are the transportation of choice. Like many golf car communities in the US, like Boca Grande and Sun City, private passenger cars are not permitted. The quaint two lane roads are heavily populated with bicycles, pedestrians, and golf cars. Private residences in Discovery Bay typically sell between $8M and $80M. And here is why golf cars are so expensiveDiscovery Bay has a population of 20,000,

according to the 2016 census. The Transportation Department has capped golf car licenses at 500. In order to own and drive a golf car within Discovery Bay, you must have a golf car license. The short supply has skyrocketed the prices for golf cars and their accompanying licenses within the community. Since standard vehicles are not permitted, walking and biking are the only ways to get around if you aren’t one of the lucky few with a golf car license. Recently, licensed golf cars have been selling for $255,000USD within Discovery Bay. The upscale neighborhood is home to airline pilots, bankers, lawyers, and high profile investors. The ability to

own a golf car is not only convenient but is also a status symbol within the community. Residents take notice when nannies drive children around on golf cars or when they are parked at the community grocery store. Golf cars are coveted in Discovery Bay. Not only are golf cars highly sought after, they have also become lucrative investments. The region has been faced with low interest rates and soaring property prices, so investors have taken to putting money into unconventional investments, like golf cars in Discovery Bay. Golf car licenses in Discovery Bay can only be owned by residents and can be freely bought and sold between owners. Golf car rentals can yield as much as $12,000 month, costing more than an apartment rental. These factors combined make for the perfect storm for investing in golf cars. The next time you are hit with a golf car expense, just think of how expensive your golf car would be in Discovery Bay.

Electric vehicles may be all the rage now among automotive manufacturers, but golf car makers have been using the technology since the early 1950s. Specifically, the Marketeer Co. first began producing electric cars in Redlands, CA, in 1951. By the late 1950s, other companies entered the market, including Club Car Inc. in 1958. Sixty years later, Club Car LLC is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of small-wheel, electric vehicles. The company also makes gas-engine-powered cars and hundreds of accessories that let golfers customize their cars. Club Car operated as an independent company until it was purchased in 1978 by eight former executives of golf-car rival E-ZGO. The company was sold again in 1995 to Ingersoll Rand (IR). Interestingly, assemblers at Club Car’s Augusta, GA, plant had been using IR’s air- and DC-powered precision screwdrivers and angle wrenches long before the acquisition. They continued to use these tools for many more years because of their error-proofing capabilities. In 2016, however, management replaced them with cordless QX Series tools from IR to improve worker productivity and safety.

The tools are compact, lightweight and ergonomically designed so assemblers can work comfortably without the constraint of air hoses or power cords. With increased freedom, assemblers more easily work in tight spaces and reach certain fasteners on the cars they are assembling. This is particularly true for two-handed tasks when the operator needs to hold the power tool in one hand and a wrench in the other to install the fastener.

• A wireless communications system that integrates tools into a factory-wide network and enables configuration adjustments remotely and in real time.

Fastener access is also improved in a special staging area for cars that have already been assembled. There, workers attach canopies to cars, customize cars to meet customer requirements, refurbish fleet vehicles and perform rework to correct minor quality problems. Since the area is located outside the factory, it cannot be accessed with conventional pneumatic or electric tools.

The cordless tools enhance quality by reducing variance so that more fasteners are installed correctly the first time. In addition, software in the tools automatically counts fasteners as they are installed, ensuring traceability and reducing liability. If a fastener is missed, the tool notifies the user, and the issue is addressed before it becomes a quality problem.

Unlike standard corded hand tools, the QX series features several advanced technologies, including: • A closed-loop transducer control that delivers precise torque and accurate, traceable results. • A multifunction display module that allows for quick setup and feedback on every tool. • Eight user-programmable configurations for torque, angle, and speed.

Overall, nearly 50 of these tools are used at the Augusta plant, which encompasses 400,000 square feet and produces several hundred cars per day on four assembly lines. Lean manufacturing is emphasized throughout the plant, along with product quality.

Plant managers say that Club Car assemblers love QX tools because they increase worker flexibility and eliminate the overhead hazards of hanging air tools that inevitably lead to bruised foreheads. Another benefit is assemblers can now easily talk to each other on the line because the tools operate so quietly. For more information on cordless fastening tools, call 704-655-4000 or visit www.ingersollrandproducts.com. MAY 2018

“Moke Canada” – Moke America selects Albion Golf Cars as their Canadian Distributor From British classic to the Caribbean icon, the Moke has become a symbol of fun in the sun. Introducing Moke America: A 20th-century collectible car reinvented with 21st-century green-friendly electric power. Now offered in Canada exclusively by Albion Golf Cars of Toronto. The Moke (rhymes with “bloke”) is far from a museum piece. Our electric car is versatile, carbon-free and efficient. This upgraded version has more leg-room, expanded trunk space, a kick-ass sound system and sex appeal. The Moke stays true to its roots while keeping its headlights on the future. Moke - History What began as a military invention for the British army in the late 1950s became a cultural touch point with celebrity fans like Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret, James Bond and the Beach Boys. Created by the British Motor Company and Alec Issigonis, the father of the original Austin Mini, the Moke was designed to be combat ready, a car that could be parachuted from the skies. While its life as a military vehicle didn’t last too long, the open-air car has become beloved by stars, surfers, and Caribbean travelers. Moke became synonymous with easy breezy island chic. Moke – Today Today’s Moke is entirely reengineered while keeping Moke’s classic design and spirit alive. The car is bigger, wider and stronger. The car is

2,300 pounds. It’s the heaviest Moke ever built. It feels sturdier than the old Moke and has been raised from a 13-inch wheel to a 14-inch wheel, so it’s taller. The Moke uses a five-step E-Dip process to control the quality of the paint; the undercarriage is rust-proofed to prevent corrosion. More of a car than a golf cart, the Moke sells between $23,500 and $28,000. Moke - It’s Electric! Most importantly, the new Moke is green. There’s an electric revolution in Europe, and countries like the Netherlands are going to have entirely electric cars by 2024. It was obvious that this endeavor had to be electric. The old Moke had engines that were very noisy. With ours, it’s silent when you drive. You can charge it with a 110-outlet. It plugs into any household outlet. Eight hours gets a full charge, and a full charge can get you almost forty miles of drive time. Moke America is a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) with a maximum speed of 25 MPH. That makes it street legal in all 50 states. In Canada, your local county has to approve public street use. The Moke is perfect for Canadian’s looking for a unique vehicle to patrol at the Cottage, Trailer Park, Hobby Farm, or wherever a lower speed electric vehicle is “cool”. THE GATED

COMMUNITY

The Cutting Edge of New Urban Transport Paradigms Based on Innovations in Gated Community Mobility

O

nce you leave the well-kept, well-organized confines of your gated community and venture into the world beyond (which you were happy to leave in the first place), it is highly likely you will be again back in the rough-and-tumble of traffic congestion and those aggravating, unexpected delays in getting to your destination. When you think about it, one of the delightful benefits of residing in a planned community is continuity and predictability of its transport system. These benefits are a function of the well laid-out roadway infrastructure and the kind of vehicle most people use—that is, our beloved personal transportation vehicle.

And well might these renown think tanks entertain such a focus. Across the globe urban centers are rapidly growing, especially in developing economies. According to the Ask Anything website, which has compiled population statistics of various sorts, 15 of the 20 cities of the world with populations over 10 million are in developing economies and 5 developed countries. The United States has 9 cities over 1 million population, while China has a whopping 99.

Bear with me as I process a few factoids about cities and urban transport, and how our gated communities and their transportation systems could serve as a model for much larger cities. Having done that, I have points to make regarding the implications for personal mobility and traffic management as relates to personal transportation vehicle (PTV) manufacturers

Gated communities as a model

Urban transport systems are much in the news. At least it’s not difficult to find such news. Simply put “new urban transport systems” in your browser and you will see what I mean. Leading consulting heavyweights such as Deloitte and McKinsey are vying for prominence in the rapidly emerging field of integrated urban transport systems and so-called smart cities.

16

The fact that there are, throughout the world, so many significantly large urban centers, coupled with the fact that most are steadily growing larger, makes it clear why so much emphasis is being placed on urban mobility, transportation infrastructure, and transport-related information and management systems.

A gated community is a planned community, and in general, they are planned for what one could call, “efficient living”. Take The Villages in Florida, for example. Note that the noun “Villages” is plural, and, indeed, this community is comprised of a series of village centers with domiciles clustered around each center. Each center has restaurants, a theatre, a bank, a food mart, a recreation facility (in addition to golf), and various retail outlets. So far, the description would fit various large cities in the United States, which have developed neighborhoods with similar amenities. Where the differences come in is in mobility, getting from point A to point B. And these differences are huge. The typical urban center is congested, has poor air quality, and the center itself may be at a considerable distance from the homes it services.

Contrast this to a gated community, where mobility is conveniently afforded by personal transportation vehicles (PTVs), which a small, yet quite accommodating for shopping, travel to gym or pool, trips to the grocery store, and so on. As to pollution and congestion, these issues are minimized. Mobilizing for the future—what vehicle types will best the needs for mobility? While gated communities offer worlds of efficiency compared with a typical city center, that efficiency centered around mobility, both stand to improve their environment via a concept rapidly gaining traction globally. That concept is “mobility as a service”, or MaaS, as it is acronymized. This is a concept of mobility that goes beyond (but does not exclude) individual vehicle ownership. Public transportation is a form of MaaS-nothing new in this--but other concepts are, such a ride sharing, on-call mobility, and shuttles. Closely tied to the various versions of MaaS is autonomous vehicle technology.

register, book, ride, and pay. Book a ride in the Modally App and await the nearest OLLI to pick you up and transport you to your destination. LM Industries recently signed an agreement to use and develop in-wheel electric motors, designed by Proteon Electric. Protean Electric has designed and developed a unique in-wheel electric drive system for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric light-duty vehicles. The Protean Drive® system can improve vehicle fuel economy, add torque, increase power and enable improved vehicle handling to both new and existing vehicles. I cite this example of new technologies that can potentially refine and enhance mobility in a gated community and, eventually, a metropolis like New York or Atlanta. And what better place to test and commercially operate this technology than a gated community? The fact is that autonomous vehicle technology is exploding, virtually all of it the product of startup teams of young, electronics, software, and mechanical engineers. And these start-ups are being acquired right and left by the big boys in the automotive field from vehicle manufacturers to major parts and components suppliers. What about golf cars (particularly PTVs) and light portage and transport derivatives?

The Olli self-driving shuttle from LM Industries Driverless shuttles are being currently tested on college campuses and could fit well in the mobility environment of a gated community. LM Industries (stands for Local Mobility) has designed and is testing a self-driving shuttle called Olli. Using a LIDAR sensor and an integrated software/actuator system, which responds to road conditions and is the heart of the self-driving experience, the Olli is beyond simple to use. Via an app, you can

Product advances in this industry are painfully incremental, speaking of golf cars and their derivatives. Truth be told (you are free to disagree with me), there has been more new product development by independent parts and components suppliers to the golf car industry than by the golf car manufacturers themselves. While this article features a shuttle application, the technological advances cited are quite adaptable to PTVs, whether in an on-call fleet operated by the gated community as a public service, or as individually-owned vehicles. But I don’t expect these innovations to come from Club Car, Yamaha, or E-Z-GO Textron. It will be the start-ups, the innovators, that may well source their vehicle component from the Big Three, but then renovate that component in what would be a radical makeover in the technology and mode of use for small vehicles in the gated community.

• When an electric golf cart stops working we start by looking at the batteries, checking cables doing voltage tests, maybe even a load test of the batteries. In previous articles, I’ve talked about “voltage flow” and several ways to test various motor controllers. I’ve written about why the solenoid might not be activating and how to test the throttle. This time I’ll talk about test running a motor. Many times when we’re diagnosing a non-functioning cart we completely overlook the motor. Obviously, the motor is a vital component of the drive system.

To test run a Regen, Shunt wound motor: • Remove all cables from the motor • Connect a jumper from A1 to F1 and a jumper from A2 to F2 • Connect 12 to 24 volts; positive at A1/F1 and negative at A2/F2 • Swap F1 and F2 to change rotation direction

Is your golf car making a funny sound? Do you have a repair question? Need to know how to install something? Ask the Golf Car Guru.

NOTE: Some motors are labeled S1 and S2 in place of F1 and F2 CAUTION Allowing a motor to spin at high ROM can cause catastrophic failure! •

To perform any of these tests the motor must remain mounted to the differential for support. When not mounted to the differential the armature is only supported on one end by an internal bearing. If you put voltage into the motor and spin it while un-mounted the armature will destroy itself as it bangs around inside the motor case. Obviously, don’t try to spin the motor with the tires on the ground... the cart will move rather abruptly. be sure to have at least the rear supported on jack-stands. Test Run A Motor To test run a series motor: • Remove all cables from the motor • Connect a jumper from A1 to S1 • Connect 12 to 24 volts; positive at A2 and negative at S2 • Swap S1 and S2 to change rotation direction

M&M Golf Cars celebrated their 40th Anniversary of the M&M Golf Cars franchise and they also held an Open House April 18 to 21. Prior to M&M Golf Cars moving the Highway 54 Andover location Butler County lacked a golf car, commercial and industrial vehicle dealer, service and rental business. “I think the community was longing for some more golf car companies in town and especially getting Club Car back in town,” M&M Branch Manager Rick Longnecker said. “Club Car had been out of town for a number of years.” M&M Golf Cars offers sales for new and used golf cars and industrial work cars, golf car service, maintenance and customization and car rental and delivery. With winter weather surely to end soon, golf season is teeing off and

the Andover location is entering a busy time for all aspects of the business. March was a good month for us,” Longnecker said. “Mostly the last couple of weeks when it was nice and warm. I expect with the weather turning and people wanting to get out on the course next weekend, I expect to see a lot of people coming through the door.” The market for the Andover location is about a 100-mile radius. Tournaments in Winfield and Hutchison events are just two of many that M&M will provide cart rentals for. “That’s a piece most people don’t even realize we do but that’s a big part of our business is rental cars,” Longnecker said. “I’ve got 50 of them sitting out here and we can deliver them. We come and pick them up. Pretty much as long as you don’t break them,

we put fuel in them. We clean them up and get them ready for the next tournament.” Longnecker expects the rental aspect as well as the commercial and industrial side of the business to grow with time as golf courses see the service that M&M provides. “We’re really ready to start, to get out there and hit those golf courses and get the fleet stuff going,” Longnecker said. “I think those golf courses are really watching to see how we do. They want to make sure they have service and support for years to come. The way our service department is running and the way our sales are going I think we’re here to stay.” The industrial side of the business includes the Club Car line of utility vehicles.

Prices for golf cars range from about $26,000 for a Garia Luxury Golf Car that features and in-dash refrigerator among other options, to used electric golf cars for under $4,000.The Club Car line is what sells the most. “We’re a Club Car distributor and their flagship car in the Onward,” Longnecker said. “There are four different basic configurations. You have a two passenger, four passenger and then lifted and non-lifted. It kind of meets the needs of everybody from your basic golfer to someone that wants a top end consumer car.” Club Car offers some bells and whistles as part of their base packages. “They come stock with headlights, tail lights, signal lights, horn, which is normally something that would cost quite a bit to add to one,” Longnecker said. “You have a myriad of colors to choose from and a whole wall of options that you can go through and customize your own car.”

“The Carryalls and XRTs which run from your basic small utility vehicle all the way up to some pretty heavy duty utility vehicles and the four-wheel drive XRTs,” Longnecker said. “Golf course maintenance units all the way from the farmer who wants something that is dependable and reliable and will do what There are also 40th Anniverhe needs it to do an everyone sary models that arrived in in between.” Andover last week.

“It’s a custom color just for M&M for our 40th anniversary,” Longnecker said. “I have three of those. I have them configured gas or electric. All two passenger but we can build it any way you want.” M&M also is a Tomberlin dealer. The M&M Golf Cars LLC began in 1978 after founders Chris and Vivian Miller leased six new golf cars and leased five to their employer, the Mexico, Mo. Country Club, and sold the other. Since then the company has expanded to locations in Mexico, Mo., Bettendorf, Ia., O’Fallon, o., Lee’s Summit, Mo. and Andover. The Andover location has regular hours of 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. For more information visit https://www. mmgolfcars.com or call (316) 733-1255.

U

ber, Waymo and Alphabet (formerly Google) are the top companies ‘racing’ to dominate the driver-less car revolution that will be part of our everyday life in the near future. So far, these companies have been testing cars in both rural and urban cities to gather data for improvements and in order to prove their safety and to pass rigid government requirements.

GOLF CAR NEWS Driver-less Golf Carts to be Tested in Coronado Starting in May www.coronadotimes. com 4/1/2018

While these companies are not yet testing their vehicles in Coronado, there is a small local startup called AutoNado-4-1 that will be testing autonomous golf carts starting this May on the streets of Coronado. AutoNado-4-1 is owned by Arizona millionaire Lirpa Sloof, a successful entrepreneur that made her fortune selling cocktail drink umbrellas in the 1980s and then investing heavily in Coronado real estate. In the 1988 movie Cocktails, starring Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue, Sloof’s flagship pink umbrella product had a brief cameo. The driver-less golf carts will be pink (with a small umbrella print – see image above) in an effort to be clearly seen by people-driven vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Mayor Richard Bailey Coronado’s Mayor Bailey commented, “This driver-less technology represents the future of transportation and it is important for Coronado to be on the cutting edge of innovation.” The AutoNado-4-1 automation components are similar to Sin-

gapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), but Sloof is adamant that her company’s technology is much more advanced and safer. Sloof shared, “Look, you don’t build a multi-million-dollar drink umbrella company without knowing a little bit about technology and safety. Creating driver-less golf carts isn’t rocket science and we are talking ‘Coronado’ – one of the safest communities on the planet with plenty of wide residential streets to test on – I expect zero issues – in fact, we’ll make Coronado even safer with our self-driving golf carts." Coronado already has hundreds of golf carts on the “island”, however, they all require drivers paying attention to actually driving them. This means that today’s Coronado golf cart driver can’t enjoy their Instagram, Snapchat, lattes, or even catching up with a quick snooze as they drive around the “Village”. “It would literally change our lives! I could just program it to take the kids to soccer practice by themselves or I could catch up on email without the hassle of actually being focused on driving. Not to mention, I spoke with a Wag’N Tails employee about having our ‘robot’ golf cart drop Nibbles (our labradoodle) at their store on Orange Avenue for a shampoo, and they said that they could easily extract Nibbles from the golf cart and then place her in it again when her grooming was completed. I can’t wait!” Initial costs of a four-passenger driver-less golf cart will be $41,201.80.

l o o h c S h g i H s a l g u o D n a m e n o Marjory St Ethan Behm and Dylan Parcheta are cousins but most of all, best friends. They are typical teenage boys who enjoy spending their spare time with friends, listening to music, playing video games and being outdoors.

it ation vi m r o f n i e the tragic events that unfolded at Marjor MorAfter

ry Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, where the boys are residents, they were determined to help the victims and families of this horrible event. With the support from their families, they started the non-profit charity, Carts 4 a Cause. The boys reached out to Jeffrey Allen Inc. and Nivel Parts for donations, and both companies were more than happy to help with their project. Jeffrey Allen Inc. donated a golf cart and Nivel Parts donated brand new parts and accessories. Ethan and Dylan then took the used cart totally apart. They had it painted and rebuilt it to make the cart look brand new. Once the boys completed the rebuild, they held a raffle for donations to raise funds for a charity they are passionate about. The first charity the boys are working with is Meadow’s Playground. Meadow Pollack was one of the 17 victims of Stoneman Douglas. Her father, Andrew Pollack, is building a playground and garden in memory of his daughter. He had a big fundraiser recently where the boys attended. The boys received many donations for the raffle as well as online through their website. The boys raised $5,000 for Meadow’s Playground. 100% of all donations will go to the charity they are working with. This adventure has allowed the boys to get down and dirty, use their hands, learn new skills, and really feel what it’s like to help others and make a difference. Carts 4 a Cause has become very important to them and they love what they are doing. They are very excited to continue this journey and help as many people as they can along the way.

HOW TO

MIlDEW GOLF CAR SEATS

During long-term storage, you may find that the seats of your recreational golf cart have begun to form mildew. While this doesn’t damage the seat itself, it can produce an unpleasant odor and come off on your clothes. Fortunately, mild cleansers such as bleach will not affect the vinyl seat surface and, with a small amount of scrubbing, will loosen and remove all traces of the mildew from both the seat cushion and the seat back. Things You’ll Need 8 Rubber gloves 8 Safety glasses 8 Bucket 8 Warm water 8 Bleach 8 Clean rag

8 Position the golf cart in an

open area where you can work without the fumes from the bleach causing you any discomfort. Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands and safety glasses to guard against getting bleach in your eyes. You may also wish to wear old clothes to ensure that you don’t damage good pants or shirts.

32

from

8 Dilute 2 cups of bleach with 4 cups of warm

water in the bucket, and then soak the rag in the diluted mixture.

8 Scrub the vinyl seats of the golf cart with the diluted bleach mixture. It will take a few minutes of scrubbing, but the bleach will kill the mildew and release it from the vinyl. You may also notice that the seat will lighten a bit. This is the warm water removing excess dirt and dust from the vinyl, not a discoloration due to the bleach. 8 Wipe the cleaned seat with a clean, dry rag to

remove any traces of the diluted bleach mixture, then place the golf cart in the sun to completely dry out any of the mixture that may have seeped into the seam between the seat base and the seat pad. Tips & Warnings

8 Do not use the bleach full strength unless the

mildew is severe. While it won’t damage the vinyl, the smell may permeate the cushion and remain with the golf cart for several weeks after you have cleaned it.

STEM Day Inspires Students with Stimulating Team Focused Learning

Club Car, an Ingersoll-Rand brand, known globally for manufacturing small-wheel, zero emissions golf, consumer and utility vehicles, is delivering an altogether new vehicle, one intended to inspire and help educate the next generation workforce. For five years, Club Car has been collaborating with the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) and EdVenture, a notfor-profit educational institution, to host “STEM Day at Club Car.” Club Car hosted 47 local middle school students from AR Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School and Guinyard Butler Middle School at its Augusta plant. HOW TO

W

ill a battery desulfator

Recover or Extend the Life of My Lead Acid Batteries?

Simple question, complicated answer. Sulphate crystal build up has been known about since the Lead Acid battery was first invented, and this build up leads to over 70% of premature failure of lead acid batteries. However all batteries wear out over time and no device can stop that happening. Over the last 30 years or so battery manufacturers have made great strides in combating sulphate build-up and improving the lifespan of their batteries, by introducing changes to the construction of the battery plates, and in ideal circumstances, proper maintenance and correct charging, sulfation should not be a problem. However we do not live in a perfect world and sulphate build up remains the major cause of battery failure. It has been found that a controlled overcharge of the battery will break down the crystals, and if used correctly will keep the batteries in good clean condition, and extend the useful life of the battery. This method is not recommended to be used on sealed lead acid batteries (also known as AGM or VRLA batteries) Around 20 years ago a simple device that created high voltage pulse sent to the battery was developed, called a pulse generator or desulfator. This, in practice, created the same effect as the controlled overcharge except it was not regulated, so over time these high voltage pulses damaged the battery plates. This negated the positive effect. The circuit board diagrams for this type of device are freely available on the internet and many of the low-cost devices available today are built using these designs. Shortterm solution, long-term damage. At the same time, alternative solutions were considered and experimentation showed that if a frequency pulse was sent to the battery it could break down the sulphate build up if the correct frequency could be achieved, however, different frequencies were required for different sizes of crystal that built up on the plates. So the devices using the single frequency method were and still are, hit and miss, some work some worthless.

48

What was needed was a device that would work over a range of frequencies, voltages and size of battery. Until the last few years building, this type of device was very expensive (in excess of $1,000) and large (the size of an old style video player). As no guarantee could be given to the end-user that sulfation was the problem with their battery no companies were prepared to develop them. Dramatic drops in the size and cost of components has allowed companies to produce small reasonable prices products able to clean the plates of batteries of various capacities and voltages. A small number of manufacturers around the world now produce products that can clean the plates of old batteries and stop the sulphate build-up on new batteries, so recovering them or keeping new batteries clear of the build-up. In effect recovering many old batteries and extend the life of any battery that is not charged or maintained in the correct way. This is ALL they do and is the only thing responsible manufactures claim that their desulfators can do, they cannot recover batteries with any internal damage, shorted cells or AGM batteries that have dried out. As it is not possible for suppliers to determine the condition or faults of the batteries customers intend to use the device on you should look for suppliers, who give clear information of how to test for faults within the battery, or offer a telephone or email service to help with any problems you may have with using a desulfator or with your specific battery setup. In conclusion, modern multi-frequency desulfators are not a magic bullet that will repair all faulty batteries, but they can significantly extend the life of your lead-acid batteries, and recover a large proportion of batteries that are sulphated and would otherwise be scrapped. This would greatly reduce you replacement battery costs, which is not insignificant on applications like solar storage batteries, ride on golf carts, fork trucks, large boats and motorhomes.

LABOR OF LOVE Chad Heffernan, Palmetto Bay, FL has spent the last six years (with more to go) working on his custom golf car. He shares his story: The build started out as a 1994 Melex with a Mercedes SL limo body. I had to weld together a new frame since the original was so rusted. I restored and painted the body, added an EMP custom wound motor, an Alltrax AXE500 controller, a 58.8v Nissan Leaf lithium battery with WiFi BMS and 17amp Charger (dead to full in 3 hours). Other upgrades include; heavy duty forward/reverse switch, custom seats, vinyl covered removable roof,

and twilights from a 1960 Pontiac retrofitted with LEDs. A killer stereo with a PPI amp, Polk speakers, and a JBL subwoofer. A faux teak floor, a trunk made out of an old shop sink (insulated to act as a cooler), and an Ausco disc brake setup. In the front, I replaced the front suspension with that of a 2008 Tomberlin, complete with hydraulic disc brakes, dual a-arms, and coil over shocks. Between the build, I started a club for golf carts in Palmetto Bay, FL where they are legal to drive on public roads. We have over 180 members now! MAY 2018
