Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the 21 regions of Italy, and one of the five Autonomous Regions with Special Statute. A natural opening to the sea for many Central European countries, the region is traversed by the major transport routes between the east and west of southern Europe. It encompasses the historicalgeographical region of Friuli and a small portion of the historical region of Venezia Giulia, each with its own distinct history, traditions and identity. If you want to relive the fascinating history of ancient Rome but can't travel that far south, come with us to Aquileia, one of the biggest Roman Empire cities declared by UNESCO as historical and archaeological heritage for humanity. Founded in 181 BC, Aquileia has seen the passing of Caesar's legions in the first century BC and Attila's hordes five centuries later. Marvel at the enchanting plan of the city of Palmanova, taste the famous raw ham of San Daniele and stroll around the historic centre of Udine.
This tour will take your breath away!
DAY 1: Monday: Our tour starts today from Udine, a historical city which has been inhabited since the Neolithic age. Pick-up in the morning from Udine’s railway station where your tourist guide will welcome you on board our bus. We will start with a guided visit to the historical centre of the town. Enjoy the charming Piazza Libertà with its Loggia del Lionello, a splendid example of 15th century Venetian architecture, distinguished by its stripes of pink and white stone. It forms with other buildings the complex that makes Piazza della Libertà one of the most beautiful Venetian squares on dry land. In fact the clock tower is an exact replica of the one in St. Mark’s square.
Most of the works that were present inside the Loggia del Lionello are now preserved in the metropolitan museum.
We continue our visit to reach Casa Cavazzini, a precious museum of modern and contemporary art. This building, recently
archaeological remains of the XVI century. Our guided tour goes on with a visit to the superb Palazzo Patriarcale and the nearby Duomo.
You will be astonished by the perfectly preserved frescoes by the famous Venetian painter Gian Battista Tiepolo. Tiepolo’s paintings are of such greatness that Udine was awarded the title of "Tiepolo’s City" after Venice and Würzburg.
At lunch break we will eat in one of the innumerable restaurants of Udine. Taste some of the typical dishes of the Friulian tradition like “Frico with polenta” or “Musetto with Brovada”.
We will then climb up the steps that lead to the enchanting Castle of Udine. While admiring the spectacular scenery from the hill on which the castle stands, the guide will show you the characteristics that make this place so magical. From there you will enjoy wonderful views over the town and the unique countryside with the gorgeous
Alps on the back-ground.
While strolling down the most characteristic streets, browse round the shops! It is the perfect place to buy souvenirs for family and friends. We will finally take a seat on one of the many open-air cafĂ¨s in Piazza San Giacomo, the old town market, and enjoy a cappuccino or a spritz while watching the Udinese people passing by.
Day 2 - Gemona, Venzone, San Daniele, Cividale The alarm clock will ring early today, since we will be travelling to Gemona and Venzone. The two old towns - situated in middle Friuli - were completely destroyed by the 1976 earthquake and later rebuilt stone by stone.
Once you get outside the high walls of Venzone, you will easily walk through the small town, to admire the Cathedral, the Town Hall, the famous mummies in the crypt of San Michele, the picturesque old houses of the village centre.
Our next stop will be San Daniele, well known for the incomparable taste of its delicious prosciutto, which is said to be the most delicate of Italy. We will stop at a typical Friulian osteria to taste this exquisite raw ham.
Our tour continues with a guided excursion to Cividale, a little gem at the foot of the eastern Friulian foothills. Breath in its peaceful atmosphere while strolling around the narrow cobbled streets leading to the charming mine square. Other worth seeing attractions are the Tempietto Longobardo and the Ipogeo Celtico. our day ends with a stop for a little happy hour to savour Friulian wines together with a slice of Gubana, a typical regional leavened baked cake with crushed walnuts, sultana, pine kernels, and spirits filling, shaped as a snail-shell.
Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 - Palmanova, Aquileia, Grado Today we will head to Palmanova, a fortress town built in 1593 by the Venetians in order to protect the regional borders against foreign threats. Explore Piazza Grande and its historic square, pass under the three monumental towers which allow entry into the town: Porta Udine, Porta Cividale, Porta Aquileia.The town plan was based on a unique model, a perfectly symmetrical nine-pointed star, with a central piazza.
Our next stop will be Aquileia, an extremely important archaeological area,
UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will see what the excavations have brought to light: the remains of the Roman forum, the burial ground, the marvellous mosaic floors, the house foundations and much more.
Our day ends with a stroll through
streets of Grado, an old fisherman village on the â€œGolden Islandâ€?. Grado has become a popular seaside destination coming
Enjoy some time at leisure for a walk on the beach or to taste some delicious seafood in one of the many restaurants near the harbour.
Day 4 - Duino, Miramare, Trieste To finish with a flourish, today we will join an excursion to Duino, Trieste and Miramare. The two castles are the main attraction. The castle of Miramare overlooks the Gulf of Trieste. In the past it was the residence of the Hapsburg family. Surrounded by a wonderful park of 22 hectares, the castle is a rare example of a noble residence of mid-seventeenth century. The Castle gardens provide a setting of beauty with a variety of trees. Other features of particular attraction in the gardens include two ponds, one noted for its swans and the other for lotus flowers, the "Castellettoâ€?, a bronze statue of Maximilian, and a small chapel.
The Duino castle is a charming tourist destination, dating back to 1389. This castle has been used as a prison and then became the residence of the Luogar and Hofer. These castles can be visited by tourists. Below the ruins of the ancient castle lies a white rock projecting into the sea, the Dama Bianca, which resembles a veiled woman and gave origin to many gothic legends.
To continue our tour, you will visit the city center of Trieste, a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services. Here you will stroll around the city, buying your last presents before returning home and you will have time at leisure for lunch.
After lunch, you will visit the famous synagogue.

After this exciting day To finish up this amazing tour, you will have dinner in another typical restaurant, savoring the local fish specialties. After dinner you will reach Udine where your bus will take you back to the station.
