A full day for IDAHOBIT BY TIM BOTTAMS INTERNATIONAL Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia is nearly here, and many of the city’s organisations are doing their part to celebrate. This Tuesday, in recognition of IDAHOBIT, the City of Ballarat will host a flag-raising ceremony at 4.15pm at the front of Town Hall which will be followed by a gathering at Ballarat Library. With International Transgender Day of Visibility recognised also earlier this year, City of Ballarat mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said both events point towards Ballarat becoming a more inclusive city. “Several years ago, there were debates about whether we
should even put the rainbow flag outside Town Hall and we’ve come such a long way since then,” he said. “It’s really heartening now especially to see young people coming to these events feeling the confidence that they can be welcomed in their own city and stand beneath their flag literally with pride. “IDAHOBIT, I guess, is representative of all the queer communities, so that and Transgender Visibility Day represent the areas we’ve got to be doing better for as a community so there’s still some work to be done.” As part of the day the Rainbow Hearts Community Pride Flag will be unveiled. four recent workshops across Ballarat’s libraries. Ballarat’s IDAHOBIT offerings will culminate with the drive-in pride night hosted by CAFS at the Ballarat Showgrounds from 6pm. The screenings will consist of two short films, and a feature, Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt), and Cafs Serena Eldridge said it will provide a “different dimension” to the day’s celebrations. “There’s a lot happening on the day, and we wanted to add something a bit different to it while still allowing those people and everyone else to participate,” she said. The funding will take the form of quarterly instalments of $25,000 to aid the cancer research institute. FECRI’s director Professor George Kannourakis said he was was “blown away” by the announcement and that with a staff of 15 scientists and five students, the money would allow the team to hire an additional member each year.

“A hundred thousand dollars a year will fund a senior scientist each year, will fund their salary and support for each year,” he said. “It costs the institute about $1.8 million a year to run. So, $100,000 is a major thing for us, especially when they say it’s not just this year which means we have security. “I always say cancer research
is a team effort, not just between the scientists but between the supporters of research.” The annual intake will comprise the JG King cancer research fellowship, and it is hoped each new scientist will further the institute’s research into what Professor Kannourakis calls bar code proteins and their role between cancer and the immune

JG King Homes chairman John King said the regular funding will allow them to “formalise” their relationship with FECRI and provide ongoing support for their research. “This is for not just for this year, this is for years to come, and we hope in the future we can make it even more significant,” he said.
