Preface Music Music is for everyone. This book is written for general music classes and provides teachers and students with a sequential and musical approach to learning music. The author believes in the ability of each child to make music through singing, performing an instrument, listening, improvising, dancing and moving, and reading and writing music in creative ways. This book will provide opportunities for the above mentioned experiences. This book is compliant to the requirements of BEC. In addition, the approaches of Kodaly Concept and Orff-Shulwerk are evident in the activities suggested in the book. The teaching materials and pieces are based on Filipino folksongs, foreign songs, and original pieces by the author. Classical compositions for listening and singing purposes are included from grades 1 to 6. The children will enjoy the games, rhymes and speeches, body percussion activities, Philippine music, and world music made available in this book. Each book (1-6) will have an accompanying CD where all the songs and music will be recorded. A teacher’s manual will be provided to show the procedures of each lesson.

Arts According to Jean Arp, “Art is a fruit that grows in man, like a fruit on a plant or a child in his/her mother’s womb.” With this in mind, the author came up with this book that aim not only to teach art to its young readers, but more importantly, to cultivate the artist inside of them. This is to inspire creativity and teach them the basics of art. This will also allow them to learn and explore the different elements and guide them with the principles in creating an artwork. Each child has the potential to be a great artist, we just need to provide them with the fundamentals and develop their creativity. The teaching and instructional materials are carefully prepared to suit each grade level. Provided are lessons on the elements (dot, line, shape, form, color and texture) of art and the guiding principles (balance, rhythm, harmony, proportion, contrast and emphasis) that will be valuable in teaching them how to appreciate and create an artwork.

Physical Education This book is intended to enhance physical education classes through different motor skills that incorporate intellectual and social development. These developmental skills are essential in childhood stage to be able to bring the full potential of each pupil based on their learning style. Lessons are packed with different learning experiences that are suited to their age. Three activities are integrated per lesson to achieve learning in different ways. These activities are Picture Smart which promotes visual intelligence, Smart Moves which intends to develop bodily-kinesthetic intelligence and Think Smart to nourish the student’s intellectual, mathematical and abstract thinking. Moreover, values, social interaction, safety measures in doing physical activities and a sense of nationalism are evident in most of the lessons.

This book is made with this in mind. Having children hear from each other as they talk and share about each topic; see and recognize ideas and concepts; and to apply them as they do the activities that the author designed for them.

The activities in this book are designed to teach new concepts and skills to children while enhancing what they already have. They aim to get the students interested in their body and in keeping themselves healthy and strong. Nutrition, Personal Health and Safety are topics which can enhance their health and will lead them to a more healthful lifestyle.
