PREFACE

Stitch and Design! Two simple words… two skills that you need to manage your everyday life. No, this learning module is far from making you a good dressmaker or tailor and designer but it gives you the basics enough to start making life easier and more pleasant for you…something that when understood well, will make you a better person inside out and will prepare you to handle succeeding dressmaking/tailoring lessons. This, you will find as you go through the five (5) lessons. This learning module serves as the foundation for your dressmaking/tailoring knowledge, attitude, and skills, which you will develop further as you finish high school and make you more prepared to handle one of the biggest decision you might be making in your life ... entrepreneurial endeavor…a business of your own, or to go to higher education. The lessons included in this module are presented developmentally so that after finishing the first lesson, you are ready to apply your learning to the succeeding lessons and accumulate more knowledge and skills until you complete all the lessons. The complete course (Grades 7-12) aims to prepare you to start a dressmaking or tailoring business or to go into tertiary education along this line. This learning module is a complete learning package which helps you in building the competencies you need to develop in the K to 12 Technology and Livelihood Education Program This, however, does not give you everything you need to know but it directs you to more learning materials through reading related books, researching and surfing the internet on the latest developments on the subject, and doing other related activities designed to enrich further your learning. Lesson 1 introduces you to the use of sewing tools and equipment. It has six (6) learning outcomes: identifying the different kinds of sewing machines; discussing the uses of the different parts of the sewing machine; demonstrating the care and maintenance of the different parts of the sewing machine; and demonstrating how to troubleshoot simple sewing machine problems. Lesson 2 is about a personal topic everyone engages in, design and clothing selection. It provides learning outcomes that enable you to: discuss the importance of clothes for body protection and other purposes; explain the role of the elements of design in clothing selection; discuss the significance of the principles of design in choosing appropriate clothes for any occasion; and determine the appropriateness of design based on the person’s physical attributes. Lesson 3 deals with measurements and calculations. It is composed of six (6) learning outcomes: using appropriate measuring tools; taking accurate body measurements; recording required measurements; performing simple calculations; demonstrating how to read measurements accurately; and estimating cost of materials for a simple project. Lesson 4 is about project planning and making. It is in this lesson that you are taught how to plan for your sewing projects and how to construct the projects. You will also learn how to perform basic sewing skills needed to make the two simple projects; estimate cost of materials for simple projects; and sew simple sewing projects… a simple apron and a gartered short pants.

Lesson 5 orients you to one important aspect of conducting a business‌that of ensuring a safe working environment for your workers. It has three learning outcomes: identifying hazards identify hazards and risks in the workplace; discussing the causes and prevention of workplace hazards and risks; and practicing occupational safety and health principles. Learning outcomes start with quick quizzes, which assess your stock knowledge on the lesson, followed by the glossary of terms, which gives you the meaning of important terms used in the lesson, the discussion proper, a summary of the lesson, a check for understanding, and enrichment activities. I am hopeful that this learning module will serve its purpose of providing you with a complete learning package that is informative, challenging, interesting, and fun meant to spark more interest in independent learning, and trigger your clamor for more dressmaking and tailoring knowledge and skills. In the preparation of this learning module, I had YOU in mind! I hope that through the varied activities and projects, I might inspire more interest on dressmaking and tailoring, skills that you can develop further for personal, professional, and entrepreneurial endeavors.

Using this Learning Module This learning module allows you to go through the material at your own pace. It encourages self-instruction and complements instruction. Thus, it could be effectively used by you and your teacher. Your teacher provides the necessary guidance and so it is important that you consult with him/her every now and then and submit the requirements as prescribed in the enrichment activities. It is also important that you go through each learning outcome following the sequence given so that you are prepared well for the discussion and could gain a better understanding of the lessons, assess your progress through the check your understanding portion, and enrich your learning. The quick quiz in each learning outcome is actually a mini-pretest. Its main purpose is to check your stock knowledge or entry behavior on the lesson. After going through all the lessons, take the post-test. The post-test is a compilation of all the quick quizzes. It will give you an idea of your total performance after going through this learning module. If you are not satisfied with your performance based on the post-test, it is suggested that you go back to the lesson which you think you need to understand further. To help you assess your progress after each learning outcome, an answer key is provided on pages ________. I recommend that you take a look at the answers only after you have answered the questions. Record your scores on these activities to serve as your guide on how much you know before going through the lessons and after. If you find some difficulties as you go through each lesson, do not hesitate to discuss it with your teacher. Remember, the goal of this learning module is to give you a comprehensive starter course in dressmaking and tailoring which is necessary in preparing you for succeeding courses, for future entrepreneurial undertaking, and/or for higher learning. Enjoy learning and inspire others to do the same!
