os niños saben que el Internet es una “caja mágica” capaz de responder preguntas, que proporciona plantillas imprimibles de casi cualquier animal para colorear, además de ser lugar para ver videos divertidos que se repiten sin cesar, etc. También saben que las redes sociales son una excelente manera de mantenerse en contacto con amigos y familiares.

Lamentablemente, el internet también es un lugar peligroso para pasar el rato, especialmente para los niños. Los acosadores cibernéticos, los abusadores de niños, el contenido inapropiado, y más están al acecho, esperando la oportunidad de comunicarse con sus hijos. Tal experiencia podría dañar a un niño por el resto de su vida.

Una encuesta realizada por la Universidad de Phoenix encontró que la gran mayoría de los adultos en EE. UU. están preocupados por los factores de seguridad en línea que afectan a sus hijos, como extraños o acosadores que hablan con ellos (83%) y comparten material sensible (80%), siendo las redes sociales (Facebook, Snapchat e Instagram) la plataforma que causa mayor preocupación entre los adultos (67%). La encuesta también mostró que 6 de cada 10 padres consideran importante educar a sus hijos sobre la seguridad en línea (60%) y sobre el monitoreo de sus actividades en internet (56%).

La Dra. Pam Roggeman, decana de la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de Phoenix, ofrece algunos consejos para que los padres discutan con sus hijos sobre cómo prevenir el ciberacoso a través de medidas de seguridad. “Asegúrese de hacer preguntas y mantenerse al tanto de las tendencias actuales, así como de las plataformas populares y cómo las usan los niños. Mantenga un diálogo abierto con su hijo y hágale saber que pueden acudir a usted si detectan un problema o una actividad en línea inusual", agregó.

1. Ser empático con su situación. Los niños suelen tener miedo o vergüenza de hablar sobre el acoso cibernético con sus padres. No se acerque a ellos de inmediato con soluciones, ya que esto puede hacer que duden en compartir sus dificultades con usted en el futuro.

2. Enséñales cómo reaccionar. Muchos niños pueden no saber cómo responder a un acosador. Dígales que guarden evidencia y que busquen ayuda. Si se sienten en peligro, necesitan saber a quién y cuándo pedir ayuda. También deben hablar si alguien que conocen es víctima de ciberacoso.

3. Proteger sus cuentas. Muchos sitios de redes sociales permiten a los usuarios bloquear o reportar personas. Asegúrese de que sus hijos tengan contraseñas seguras y privadas y que cierren la sesión de las cuentas cuando no estén en uso, ya que esto puede llevar a otras formas de acoso cibernético como el robo de identidad.

4. Realizar una auditoría de la lista de amigos. Siéntese con sus hijos para hacer una auditoría de sus listas de amigos en las redes sociales.

Si un compañero está acosándoles, anímelos a que lo remuevan. Pídales que mantengan sus listas de amigos solo de personas que realmente conocen y con las que pueden hablar.

5. Servir de ejemplo. Evite publicar comentarios negativos en sus canales sociales y limite sus conexiones solo a las personas que conoce.

Keep Your Kids Safe Online

ids know the Internet is a “magical box” capable of answering questions, providing printable templates of pretty much any animal to color in and the place to watch endlessly repeatable fun videos, etc. They also know social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family.

Sadly, the Internet is also a dangerous place to hang out— particularly for children. Cyberstalkers, child molesters, inappropriate content, cyber bullies and more are lurking, waiting for an opportunity to reach out to your children. Such an experience could damage a child for the rest of her or his life.

A survey made by the University of Phoenix found that a large majority of U.S. adults are concerned with factors of online safety affecting their kids, like strangers/predators talking to them (83%) and sharing sensitive material (80%); social media (Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram) being the platform that causes the most concern for adults (67%). The survey also showed 6 in 10 parents consider educating their children about online safety (60%) and monitoring their activities online to be important (56%).

Dr. Pam Roggeman, Dean of the University of Phoenix College of Education, offers a few tips for parents to discuss with their children on how to prevent cyberbullying through security measures. “Be sure to ask questions and keep up on current trends as well as popular platforms and how children are using them. Keep an open dialogue with your child and let

them know they can come to you if they sense a problem or unusual online activity,” she added.

• Be empathetic to their situation. Children are often afraid or embarrassed to talk about cyberbullying with their parents. Don’t approach them right away with solutions, as this may make them hesitant to share their struggles with you in the future.

• Teach them how to react. Many children may not know how to respond to a bully. Tell them to save evidence and reach out for help. If they feel in danger, they need to know who and when to call for help. They should also speak out if someone they know is a victim of cyberbullying.

• Protect their accounts. Many social media sites allow users to block or report people. Make sure your children have private strong passwords and sign out of their accounts when not in use, as this can lead to other forms of cyberbullying like identity theft.

• Perform a friends list audit. Sit down with your children to do an audit of their friends lists on social media. If a peer is engaging in bullying, encourage them to remove him/her.

Ask them to keep their friends lists to people they truly know and talk to.

• Serve as an example. Refrain from posting negative comments on your social channels and limit your connections to only people you know. Your children are more likely to make a change if you lead as an example.

Después del desfile, disfruta del emocionante Festival Sabores del Caribe, con una amplia variedad de comida caribeña, vendedores locales y cervezas artesanales proporcionadas por Exit One Tap Room. Los restaurantes locales del centro de Homestead también estarán abiertos para los visitantes.

La novedad este año es el Artists Corner, donde el público está invitado a unirse a la diversión mientras los artistas organizan una demostración de arte en vivo en el parque.

Homestead Main Street is hosting its Annual Carnival Parade and Flavors of the Caribbean Festival, next Saturday, March 16 from 4 to 9 p.m. Parade begins at 5 p.m. ome out for the Main Street Carnival Parade along Krome Avenue in Downtown Homestead starting at NW 4th Street and ending at Mowry Avenue, and enjoy a colorful and joyful parade with the Mocko Jumbie Junkanoo dancers and band in the lead, with floats, bands and the fabulous dancing horses of Club Hipico Mexico Americano.

This year Go! Latinos Magazine will lead the way with our editors Ervin Palacios and Bertha Lopez as Carnival King and Queen. “The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

Our idea is to bring the community together in a short but very colorful parade that everybody likes to get involved in,” said Yvonne Knowles, Executive Director of Homestead Main Street Organization.

After the parade, enjoy the exciting Flavors of the Caribbean Festival, with a wide variety of Caribbean food, gift vendors, as well as craft beers provided by Exit One Tap Room.

Downtown Homestead’s local restaurants will also be open for visitors.

This year the event will include “The Artists Corner,” where the public is invited to join in the fun as artists put on a live art demonstration in the park. Also, dance to the music of DJ Rawsoul and his Rawsoul Vibes Entertainment throughout the evening along with exciting special guests performing on Losner Stage.

“We are celebrating the ninth year of Main Street’s Carnival Parade and Festival. Last year, we had over 2,000 people show up to the event. Every year we are growing in attendance numbers thanks to our local community. Their participation and support have contributed to the excitement of our carnival celebration. We would also like to thank our sponsors who make it possible to present these events to the community,” added Yvonne.

The Main Street Carnival Parade and Flavors of the Caribbean Festival is organized by the hard-working members of Homestead Main Street, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the economic revitalization and historic preservation of the Historic District of Homes-

Visitors to the festival are invited to park in the parking lot on the west side of Losner Park, entering on NW 2nd Street. Krome Avenue will be closed only during the parade from 4:30 until 6 p.m. This is subject to change depending on crowd size.

Justo a la vista del centro de Miami se encuentra el Parque Nacional de Biscayne, donde los visitantes pueden venir aquí con sus botes, pescar, explorar y relajarse en este paraíso marino ", dice la guardaparques Yelitza Sepúlveda.

Con costas de manglares, praderas de pastos marinos, arenales, arrecifes y barcos naufragados, el parque ofrece diversas experiencias de pesca. Los pescadores y entusiastas de las actividades al aire libre pueden capturar cientos de especies bellas y deliciosas mientras disfrutan de la vida silvestre que ofrece el parque. El parque tiene el arrecife de coral más grande de todo el país y protege 4 ecosistemas: las aguas poco profundas de la Bahía de Biscayne, el pantano de manglares de Shoreline; el arrecife de la costa y los cayos de piedra caliza de coral.

El objetivo del parque es preservar y salvaguardar este maravilloso mundo acuático. Todas las actividades de pesca y otras actividades de captura están en gran parte regidas por la ley estatal, trabajando mano a mano con el estado para promover regulaciones y garantizar la sostenibilidad de los recursos pesqueros.

Muchos visitantes pasan por estas vías y, con frecuencia, sus botes encallan. Principalmente, enseñamos qué áreas son seguras para navegar y, mientras tanto, cómo evitar el impacto sobre el ecosistema de la bahía y la vida silvestre ", agrega Yelitza.

Free Fishing and Boating Classes Taught by

Biscayne National Park Experts

Puerto Rican Yelitza Sepulveda, Park Ranger, is in charge of the Spanish-language Fisheries Awareness Class and Boating Education Class. lorida calls itself “The Fishing Capital of the World,” as there are many opportunities for fishing excursions. “Our state is very fishing friendly, and South Florida is no exception. Just within sight of Downtown Miami lies Biscayne National Park where visitors can come to boat, fish, explore and relax at this marine paradise,” says Park Ranger Yelitza Sepulveda.

With mangrove shorelines, seagrass meadows, sand flats, reefs, and shipwrecks—the park offers diverse fishing experiences. Anglers and outdoor enthusiast can catch hundreds of brawny, beautiful and delicious species while enjoying the wildlife the park has to offer. The park holds the largest coral reef in the entire country and protects four ecosystems: 1. the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay; 2. the shoreline mangrove swamp; 3. the offshore Florida reef; and 4. the coral limestone keys.

Preserving and safeguarding this watery wonderland is the park’s objective. All fishing and other harvesting activities are largely governed by state law, and the rangers work hand in hand with the state to promote regulations and ensure the sustainability of fishery resources.

Considering this, Biscayne National Park designed the Fisheries Awareness Class in order to help anglers to identify the fish they catch, to understand fishing regulations and to get the most out of their fishing experiences. Over a thousand people have benefited from the fishing class since it began in 2007. Classes are offered in English and Spanish.

Park Ranger Yelitza Sepulveda is in charge of coordinating and instructing the Spanish-speaking classes. “Classes are free for all the family to come and are held on Saturdays every two months. We want people to know about our fishing regulations and how to preserve our natural resources. Also, we advise on equipment maintenance, tackle and fishing techniques like “catch and release” or how to identify and measure the fish. Moreover, we teach anglers what fish they can catch in federal waters and which areas are regulated for fishing.”

Likewise, the park offers a boating education class, which is designed to help visitors safely experience local waterways, and learn more about park ecosystems, groundings, safety, navigation regulation and simultaneously learn how to take care of the park.

“The boating education class focuses on how to navigate within the bay. For instance, when the tide changes, there are certain routes to avoid due to shallow waters. Many visitors go through these waterways and often their boats run aground. Mainly, we teach what areas are safe to navigate and, in the meantime, how to avoid impacting the bay ecosystem and wildlife,” adds Yelitza.

Heart Valve Disease ore than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). What It Is: The condition causes heart valves, which should open one way and seal tight when closed, to develop leaks. This can put a strain on the heart and interfere with proper circulation of blood.

How It Happens: It can be due to congenital heart defects, calcification due to aging, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease.

Who Gets HVD: While currently the prevalence of the disease appears to be greater in older Caucasians, HVD may be seriously undiagnosed or underdiagnosed in African-American and Hispanic communities, particularly among younger people. In addition, African Americans and Hispanics are especially susceptible to HVD because of a tendency toward an increased rate of high blood pressure and heart problems.

What To Watch For Signs you might have HVD can include: • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure.

These symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of them, see your doctor.

What To Do: Fortunately, if you are diagnosed with HVD, there are steps you can take to improve your chances of a longer, healthier life. HVD can be managed through proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and in some cases, medication. In addition, the heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. Heart valve disease worsens over time, although the progress can be so slow that it isn't detected until the condition becomes severe and surgery may be necessary.

A Problem: According to one study, not only were African-American patients with aortic heart valve disease 54 percent less likely to be referred to a cardiothoracic surgeon than were white patients, when valve surgery was recommended, one in three refused the treatment.

An Answer: To counter such statistics, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, aims to empower at-risk individuals to take action for their own health and to join the community of HVD patients and caregivers who promote awareness and share resources.

Mejoras de seguridad para las Escuelas públicas de Miami-Dade nmediatamente después del acto de violencia cometido en Parkland el 14 de Febrero de 2018, las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade (M-DCPS) iniciaron el proceso de revisión de protocolos de seguridad e identificación de oportunidades de mejora.

the necessary steps to protect our kids,” said Dr. Larry Feldman, school board member with 45 years of service to M-DCPS. Among the security measures implemented, it is worth noting that all classroom doors must remain locked during the school day, so anyone seeking to gain entry will be required to have a key or knock and be accompanied by an adult, either a teacher or security officer. “No one is allowed to be walking around on their own.”

Schools have reduced points of entry for visitors. They must go through one port, where their ID will be screened by the Raptor visitor management system (VMS), which checks visitors against custom databases set by each school that contain custody alerts or banned

visitors.

Moreover, every school has now a professional law enforcement officer through the establishment of agreements with 18 police agencies to increase the police force, including “68 new officers hired in less than a year through an aggressive hiring campaign by Miami-Dade Schools Police Department,” added Dr. Feldman.

Apart from these security measures, MDCPS started in July the Department of Mental Health Services and hired 30 mental health coordinators to identify and assist students who may be at risk of or suffering from mental health or emotional issues. Mental wellness programs are now a significant part of the curriculum in order to establish pre-

ventive and awareness measures including anti-bullying, sensitivity training and creating a culture of respect.

Communications are also a crucial part of these improvements. For instance, the use of social media through campaigns like “#SeeSomethingSaySomething” or “#ThinkBeforeYouPost” are key for creating awareness and responsibility.

As a message to the community, Dr. Feldman added, “It is important to train your children no matter what age to be very aware, to be looking around, to talk to those they trust, because an additional pair of eyes and communicating to others is even more useful than having loads of protection systems implemented.”
