On the one hand warmly caressed by the languorous Indian Ocean and on the other coldly ignored by the frigid Atlantic, Cape Town is by nature a city of contrasts. A veritable cauldron of cultures, The Mother City draws her heritage from numerous ingredients, including dashes of the Indonesian, Dutch, French, British, German, local Khoisan and Bantu tribesÂ’ cultures. This is reflected in the wide range of architectural styles to be found in this city today, many Edwardian and Victorian buildings have been lovingly preserved and renovated, and splashes of the Old Cape Dutch style can still be found amongst the city skyscrapers. Clinging to the foothills of Table Mountain the Malay Quarter (or more correctly Bo-Kaap) is a mixture of colourful flat-topped homes laced with narrow cobblestone alleys. Home to a large Islamic community, many descended from Javan slaves imported by the early settlers, subtle Indonesian undertones linger. The city is peppered with places of historical interest with no less than 36 such sites in the immediate vicinity. Only two days after landing at the Cape in 1652, the Dutch began work on The Castle, originally a defensive fort, which still stands today and is the oldest European structure in South Africa. Widely considered the cultural Mecca of South Africa, Cape Town is home to many artists and performers. Galleries, museums, theatres and street artists are in no short supply.

Pack your trunk for a scenic adventure. The green and richly forested areas of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa are known as the Garden Route. No misnomer, as this region leaves the rest behind in terms of natural beauty and abundant plant life. The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, mild to chilly winters and is one of South AfricaÂ’s highest rainfall areas. Any time of the year is suitable for visiting the area, depending on whether you enjoy a peaceful retreat during the winter months or a bustling holiday destination during the summer. The most famous landmark of the Garden Route, The Knysna Heads, must be the most striking geological feature along the entire southern African coastline. They flank either side of a deep but potentially treacherous channel through which the sea rushes in to flood the wide lagoon at the mouth of the Knysna River. The Tsitsikamma National Park is also Africa's oldest and largest marine reserve, playing a vital role in the preservation and conservation of marine fauna and flora. Its rugged, unspoiled coastline is a photographer and hikerÂ’s dream.

Living up to its name, KwaZulu Natal’s southernmost Hibiscus Coast dazzles with iridescent blooms against a lush green backdrop, meeting a perennially-warm saltwater playground which stretches over 150kms from Amanzimtoti to Port Edward near the Wild Coast providing, a gallery of perfect hideaway coves and seemingly endless golden sand. And while our inviting stretch of Indian Ocean presents the year-round delights of playful dolphins and regal whales, this enchantment peaks to a crescendo each winter when the world renown ‘Sardine run” occurs - this offers the best possible 'ringside' seats for one of nature's truly greatest spectacles. This is any anglers delight as he can stand kneedeep in the shore-break for hours on end, casting lines after some of the most varied and abundant scaled trophies to be hooked as they follow the small silvery fish up the coastline.

Durban, Africa's bewitching seaside playground, where the fun never ends, has from its earliest days possessed a special charm...a certain mystique that adds a vibrant charisma to the meeting of warm Indian Ocean, radiant golden sands and lush sub-tropical greenery. The city center bustles during the day and, amidst the museums and civic buildings of colonial heritage, you will find yourself at the heart of a truly African city. It is a cultural concoction of communities, languages and cultures, including British, Indian and Zulu. Durban is a major gateway to Africa and is also the largest and busiest port city on the continent. Due to this, there is an extensive road network leading to and from any destination in South Africa.

Drakensberg means ‘Dragon mountain’ a name that brings to life the massive basalt cliffs of its northern reaches to the soaring sandstone buttresses in the south. The Berg - as it's popularly known - offers a myriad of delights to anyone of any age who needs to 'get away from it all'. Recognised by the ancient mystics of our land as breathing new life into the human spirit, the inescapable allure of this 200- kilometre- long wonderland is home to the uKhahlamba ‘Barrier of Spears’ Drakensberg Park, which was the first South African site to be nominated as both a natural and cultural World Heritage Site. 35 000 individual 'San rock paintings’ spread over about 6 000 sites have been catalogued, of which the oldest painting dates back 2 400 years. Sadly, the Bushmen have all gone from this area, but fortunately they created a fascinating diary of their lives for us to marvel over. In the foothills of this magnificent range, local entrepreneurs have established the Midlands Meander - a delightful collection of arts and crafts stores, delectable dining, homemade goods, farms stalls, animal farms, guesthouses and everything that epitomises their pastoral way of life. No trip to the Drakensberg is complete without sampling the many enchantments to be found along this route.

The Free State is often referred to as "The Golden Country", with fields of corn and golden sunflowers embellishing the landscape and a wealth of minerals deep within the soil. Traditionally a pastoral area, modern towns with shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, parks and sports facilities have mushroomed in recent years but more sedentary pursuits can still be enjoyed on and along the shores of the many dams and rivers in this verdant province

Mpumalanga means ‘the place where the sun rises’ a name that evokes images of light, promise and daily renewal. It is a name that this province lives up to. Hear the call of the wild here, from the high-pitched drone of the Anopheles mosquito to the guttural rumblings of the bull elephant. The countryside is dramatic, with vast sculpted crags tumbling down to the verdant lowveld at God’s window, giggling rivulets twisting through Bourkes Luck and reckless cascades of water at Mac Mac, Horseshoe and Forest falls.

The land of many South African heroes, Mpumalanga is steeped in history: Jock of the Bushveld trotted along these trails, Harry Wolhuter rode these paths, Mzilikazi took this course away from the tyranny of Shaka and the voortrekkers made their creaking plodding way up over the escarpment and into the future, leaving the past here for us to discover.

The Northern territories of the Kruger National Park which are located in Limpopo, are home to large herds of elephant and buffalo, the rarely sighted of tsessebe and sable as well as rich bird life which is not found in other parts of the park. Here, on the park's western border, exclusive privately owned game reserves and lodges offer the best in airconditioned accommodation coupled with day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. The Waterberg with its mountainous terrain also provides a rewarding wilderness experience with its mountainous terrain and rocky outcrops. Beyond the mountains, mopane trees and giant, ancient baobab trees dominate the plains sweeping northward to Zimbabwe and many natural heritage sites, and game reserves accessible to visitors. Here one can find 340 indigenous tree species, an abundance of animal life and the worldÂ’s highest concentration of leopard. Gauteng is one of the most developed areas in South Africa and as such has a wealth of attractions to offer the visitor, be it for business or pleasure. Johannesburg is a metropolitan melting pot of culture, art, entertainment and bustling activity. Gold Reef City with itÂ’s museums, casino, fun fair, bars and restaurants never fails to amuse old and young alike while the cities themselves are crammed with interesting sites, shops and a myriad of things to do. Archaeological artefacts of astonishing wealth and significance have been discovered here in the Northern reaches of South Africa, particularly at the Sterkfontein caves and even more so at Taung. This site yielded a hominid skull of such importance that it pushed forward documented occupation of Africa by one million years. Golfing and other exciting activities are in no short supply, with water sports, paragliding, hot air ballooning, horse riding and hang gliding all on offer. 38
