March/April 2011 Volume 7
New Series Join us as we learn to share our faith in a style that fits us as individuals
Coming to GKM this March
The single greatest gift believers can give to the people around them is an introduction to the God who created them, who loved them, and who has a purpose for their lives. During the months of March and April, we begin a new teaching series entitled “Contagious Christian”. My desire is that every believer, needless of age or gender or personality type, will discover that sharing their faith will be the most natural thing in the world. At work. At school. In social settings. At the gym. At the kids’ basketball game. In the midst of our insane schedules.
Wherever. Whenever. ! Let’s learn to be “contagious for Jesus”.

Saturday & Sunday April 23rd & 24th 2011, 6pm
In a prison system full of hate, violence and hopelessness, one man seeks to bring hope and forgiveness to others who are lost. But when a dark and cruel secret is revealed to him, the very fabric of his faith is put to the test. Can he put aside his personal hurt and offer God’s forgiveness to those who caused him pain, or are there some sins that can never be forgiven?

An Indirect Approach to Sibling Conflict One great way to challenge the sibling conflict problems in a household is to play games with your children. Games are miniature scenarios about real life. Whether you're playing a board game, a card game, or some kind of communication or role playing game, children have to use relational skills. Playing games can teach children how to win, how to lose, how to show mercy, and how to talk humbly. As you play games with your children, model honor. Have fun and enjoy the game but avoid put downs, bragging, boasting, hurtful revenge, and meanness. That seems to be hard even for some parents these days. Teach children how to win without being hurtful, how to lose without complaining, how to make a good move with humility, and show honor whether you're winning or losing. Kids need to see these things modeled in games so they can learn how to handle similar situations in life. Choose your comments wisely as you correct or confront others who may not handle themselves well. You may let some things go, but your comments are important, and children learn from the things you say. You may see selfishness and bad attitudes demonstrate themselves. Look for loving ways to correct while still enjoying the game. Play games regularly, continue to look for ways to communicate honor, and challenge dishonoring behavior and words. You'll be surprised at how much you can teach without your children even realizing they're in a classroom. This tip comes from the book, Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes In You and Your Kids, by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.

Microwave Toasted Almond Toffee Directions Cooking Time: 15 minutes or less. Makes: about 1 1/2 lb (750 g). 1. First toast your almonds. Just spread them on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 F (180 C) for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring once, until lightly browned. (Toast a few more almonds than you'll need for the recipe to allow for, um, taste testing.) Chop coarsely and set aside. Grease a 9 x 13 in. (23 x 33 cm) rectangular baking pan. 2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the sugar, butter, water and corn syrup. Place in the microwave and cook on high power for 4 mins. Stir, then continue to nuke it on high for another 6 to 8 mins, stirring every 2 mins, until the mixture is golden brown. During this process, please have your eager young helpers stand back from the extremely hot candy mixture. Even the bowl gets too hot for a child to handle safely. Remove mixture from the microwave, stir in the vanilla and immediately pour into the prepared baking pan, spreading to the edges with a (heat resistant) spatula. Let cool for a minute or two, then have your child sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot mixture in the pan. (Parental supervision is absolutely necessary to make sure your child doesn't touch the hot toffee.) As soon as the chocolate chips are softened, carefully spread them to cover the top of the toffee in an even layer. Have your child sprinkle the nuts over the chocolate. Let cool completely (at room temperature or in the refrigerator), then break into pieces
Ingredients 1 1/3cups (325 mL) granulated sugar 1cup (250 mL) butter 2tbsp (25 mL) water 1tbsp (15 mL) corn syrup 1tsp (5 mL) vanilla 3/4cup (175 mL) semi-sweet chocolate chips 2/3cup (150 mL) coarsely chopped, toasted almonds
