MURFREESBORO — More than two months after MTSU football player and Marine Steven Rhodes stepped into the national spotlight, he still does not have cable TV. That means he will likely miss his appearance on ESPN’s “College Gameday” as a special Veterans Day piece on Saturday (811 a.m.). “I didn’t see much of the media stuff about me before, and there’s a chance I won’t see this one either,” Rhodes said. “And it’s not because I can’t get cable. I just don’t have time. I’m just focused on family, football and school right now. “As soon as I do this with ESPN, I have homework to do.” An ESPN crew interviewed Rhodes and shot additional footage after MTSU’s practice Tuesday night.

Rhodes will lead the team and carry the U.S. flag onto the field for MTSU’s Salute to Armed Services game at 3 p.m. Saturday versus Florida International at Floyd Stadium. The Blue Raiders will wear patriotic helmets with red, white and blue logos at the game. “It’s an honor to carry the flag. I did it (in the Marines), and I’m proud to do it now,” Rhodes said. Rhodes, a Marine sergeant, drew national attention in August when The Daily News Journal broke a story about the NCAA’s refusal to grant him immediate eligibility to play this season because he participated in military-only recreational league football games at a Marine base in 2012. Virtually every major news organization picked up Rhodes’ story. Social media pounded away at the NCAA for postpon-
