2016 ANNUAL REPORT
2016 was a successful year for GO2 - there have been implemented three projects, two of them are funded by EU. Since March 2016, the new offices in the city center have given better accessibility and facility in interaction. Increasing the staff with 1more full time person and other 2 part time employees brought more intensity and efficiency at GO2 work. More promotion has been done, not only in local, national and international media, but in social media as well. By launching the monthly journal, called VIJA and focused on protected areas in four northern regions can be considered as innovation. The main achievement remains the participation in Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES 2016) in Silicon Valley, America, as Albanian representative thrpugh 45 participants from all over Europe - and the 2-week internship in the YTILI (Young Transatlantic Leaders Initiative) program at an American company.

Sustainable Urban Mobility PLAN for Shkoder (SUMP)
‘TEUTA – Towards European Union with better Urban Transport –supported by EU funds and coordinated by Rec Albania, and to adapt the EU Legislation on air quality directive at Albanian Legislation. [15th April 2016 - 15th April 2017]
In order to control the emissions from road traffic, the main source of air pollution in most urban areas, EU has developed the ‘Sustainable Urban Mobility System’, which is a plan of urban transport management integrated with the general Local Development Plan. As the transition in Albania brought rapid socio-economic changes, the legislation still lacks thorough planning of transportation, and there is a lack of effective policies and management plans in urban areas which are strongly related to life quality and improvement of air quality specifically. Goal: Creation local policy about the issue of urban mobility management, which will directly improve life of citizens and indirectly air quality. Objectivities: Compiling Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan attached by the Local Regulation on SUM that will be involved from General Local Plan for Albanian urban areas influencing life quality; Raise awareness for issues related to air quality and urban mobility. ‘Pollution of Drini River basin from Urban Waste’ cross border CRESSIDA project in between Kukes/Diber (AL) and Gjakova/Istog (KS) May 2016 - January 2017
Funded by Environmental Protection Agency – US EPA coordinated from REC-Albania. Since many years, one of the most urgent concerns in Drini River Basin remains the pollution from urban waste. The solid waste have become a very big problem recently, when the rise of the water level in Fierza Lake brings hundreds tons of waste in spring and fall each year. The amount of waste is coming from settlements of Kosovo (White Drin) and Macedonia (Black Drin), and all Albanian settlements along the river banks and the streams flowing in Drin River Bassin. The pilot project ‘Pollution of DRIN River Basin from urban waste’ is a cross border approach which aims to prevent the disposal of solid waste in Drin River Basin in order to improve the water quality, and more concretely in Kukes, Diber, Gjakova and Istog. The CRESSIDA project builds stakeholder capacities to face sustainability challenges in the Drin and Drina River basins, focusing on improving the flexibility and adaptive capacities of communities and businesses based on knowledge acquired through the 2014 Course for Sustainability, organized by the REC’s Sustainable Development Academy (SDA). [April 2016 – Dec. 2016]
Goal: To prevent the disposal of solid waste in Drin River Basin. Objectives: 1. To start up by cleaning the waste management of the settlements (parts of the four municipalities) along the Drin River Basin. 2. To increase group cohesion and cooperation in between the stakeholders at intra/international level of decision makers, local communities, civil societies along the Drin River Basin. Strategy for sustainable results: Creating a network and inclusive approach about ‘waste management issue’ by involving a diverse array of stakeholders potentially affected by the action, increasing capacities for local coordinators and improving dialogue with neighbor communities, will ensure the sustainability in long run. They will be able to implement the policies and fundraise related to DRIN River Basin issues in order to invest capitals in the future, such as: landfills, sewage systems etc. Results: A Database system of all spots selected by anthropogenic pollution criteria (solid waste and sewage). A common platform on web about waste management for the 4 municipalities, as a contribution from US EPA using their platforms or tools which might be open source. Creating the network and partnership in between stakeholders of 4 communities and joining others... Raising awareness for collaboration and broad cooperation on issues concerning the Drin River Bassin.
‘Public Awareness about Protected Areas in Shkoder’ 1st August 2016 - 31st July 2017
Supported by EU funds and coordinated by ALCDF. [Aug 2016 - Aug 2017] Shkoder district has made significant progress in expanding its network of Protected Areas (PA) of 3.2% of the territory in 2005 to 25% in 2015. About 80% of this natural heritage is the wetlands areas: 1. Shkoder Lake and 2. Buna River - Velipoje ‘both categories’ natural reserves managed and RAMSAR (international convention on wetlands and biodiversity). They belong to two neighboring municipalities of Shkoder and Malesi e Madhe. The deterioration of natural ecosystems comes from the nature itself, such as climate change and mainly the anthropogenic impacts: rapid urbanization by converting the land from natural to urban, by building infrastructure such as BYPASS, cutting trees, waste disposal etc. The second one is linked directly to our objectives, as our main goal is raising public awareness of the inhabitants and decision makers about the ecosystems in Shkoder region (protected areas). Objectives: - preserve the rich biodiversity in these areas - to promote the sustainable ecotourism as the zones contain high economical and social opportunities to develop this sector. Activities: Newspaper VIJA on environmental issues in general, Series of programs at one of the local TV and radio stations, Three informative meetings between inhabitants - decision makers and stakeholders, education for young generations of elementary school and University, Promotion materials etc.

Student Training on questionnaire on SUMP 19th May
It has been about two and a half months since the work of the Sustainable Urban Movement Plan (PLUQ) in Shkodra has been intensively started as a pilot project in Albania. The biggest challenge remains ANALYSIS, as no previous data is, while a good detail system and data from the field, would bring rational and cost-effective solutions. The Plan Design Method is the Polycentric Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (POLY SUMP), an European approach to standards referring to European directives - including air quality. The analysis will be scattered throughout the new territory of the new Municipality of Shkodra, and the distribution will be respecting three criteria: spatial, economic and demographic one. Settlements that are going to be studied through eg questionnaires, observations, traffic measurements, parking measurements, public hearings will be: Theth, Shkodra Suburbs, Postrribe, Dajc, Gur I Zi, Berdice, Velipoje and Shkodra center. 2000 questionnaires are going to be distributed (for three deceived groups, families, schools, businesses). Actually, about 700 questionnaires have been distributed by a
group of young students from the University of Luigj Gurakuqi (Department of Tourism and Geography) who have been systematically trained on how to do questionnaires (urban and inter-urban mobility ) with residents - separated by different zones according to a zoning made on the map. Data collection from the terrain by asking different target groups that make daily travels in the urban area for their activities, such as families, people that choose their mode of travelling to work and to school; In the framework of SUMP project there are done there are done 2000 questionnaires to habitants, school/universities, job institutions of Shkodra Municipalities from May 2016 to April 2017 1) How do families travel in the city? 998 questionnaires 2) Home do people travel to Work? 501 questionnaires 3) How do people travel to school? 501 questionnaires The data collected are going to be elaborated and used for the SUMP project with the support of the Economic Faculty and foreign experts.
