Harold’s Herald THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY’S CIRCLE K INTERNATIONAL CLUB

Table of Contents Hi guys! I'm really excited for the upcoming year as GMU's CKI President. I want to focus on getting our club's name out on campus, having lots of service opportunities, and staying involved in our CKI division and district. One of the events I'm most excited for is this year's Relay for Life! Relay is a fundraising walk-a-thon, the proceeds of which go to the American Cancer Society. This event is special to me because many members of my family have been affected by cancer. I also think that Relay is a really unique and fun event! There's really no other service project that I can think of where you get to stay up all night long walking, playing dodgeball, dancing, eating pizza, and having fun all in the name of finding a cure for cancer! It's gonna be a blast! As far as my plans for next semester, the board and I have come up with some cool ideas but I am always eager to hear what you, the club members, want to see. Please come up to or message me on Facebook and let me know what you're interested in getting out of CKI. We really value your opinions and want to make sure they're reflected in what the club is actually doing. Let's work together to make this a great year for GMU CKI!

-Molly Patrick, GMU CKI Club President March Member of the Month!

Tijani Musa 1

On Friday, March 30th, NoVa Alexandria put on a great Culture Show in Falls Church to raise money for Eliminate. We went out to show our support and we also helped serve Baja Fresh before the show started. It was a lot of fun and we got to see some great dances

and hear some pretty good songs!

Hey Y'all, My name is Catie Dugan and I have been a member of GMU CKI since Fall 2007. You could call me ancient and need to graduate, but actually I am a graduate student. I just didn't want to leave CKI! :) I am studying International Commerce and Policy at the Arlington campus. I really enjoy cooking, travelling, reading and just hanging out! I am currently serving on the District Level as District Editor and the International Level as Better World Books Ambassador. My favorite service project is Clemyjontri Park clean ups! They are super fun and its a super awesome park! Hopefully you'll see why at Kiwanis 1 Day! Let me know if you ever need anything or just want to hang out!

K-Family We went to a Kiwanis meeting helped out with their in-house service project on Tuesday, April 3rd. We helped decorate bags and stuffed eggs for an Easter egg hunt. Our next event with our KFam will be the Kiwanis One Day. Come out and help us show how much we appreciate our Kiwanis Club!

Recent Events opportunity for youth age 5 - 18 to test out their public speaking and fashion design and modeling skills in a low-intimidation environment. Youth registered to compete in presentations, public speaking, or fashion revue. Volunteers served as room chairs and judges for the contest. As room chairs, we prepared the room for the contest and welcomed contestants and families as they entered the room. As Judges, we used standardized judging sheets to score each presenter.

We helped out at the national Epilepsy walk in DC handing out beverages as people completed the walk and at the Kid’s tent where kids were getting their faces painted. Afterwards we headed out for some burritos at Qdoba.

My name is Molly and I am your club president. I'm an International Studies major and about to finish up my sophomore year. I have a lot of interests from Harry Potter to comic books to reality shows and my favorite places to eat are burrito joints and frozen yogurt shops! I'm from Nashville, Tennessee and came to GMU to be close to DC for my major. I had never heard about CKI before I came to Mason and ended up going to the first meeting because a friend invited me. I love doing service so CKI became my niche! I've grown to love the organization as a whole and am so excited to be the president this year! My name is Eminet and I am the executive vice president. I am a sophomore. I am a pre-nursing major. I love helping others, seeing that smile just brightens up my day! My favorite fact is Circle K International makes you a better person. My favorite quote is "when life gives you lemons make lemonade." I’m Liz, your new secretary. I joined CKI my freshman year here at Mason and am now finishing my junior year. I'm an Accounting major and am currently enrolled in the Accounting Honors Program! I like trying new things, especially new sports. My current obsession is rock climbing! I joined CKI because I love participating in service events and helping the community. My most favorite program/service I've participated in was Special Friends. Special friends was a program where I was allowed to mentor special needs first grade students throughout the school year. One of my goals/dreams is to have the opportunity to travel abroad for a service project. I'm excited to be more involved with GMU CKI and look forward to the rest of the semester and the Fall 2012/Spring 2013 year!

Hi everyone! My name is Howard and I will be your service vice president for the coming year. I am a junior Government major from Malvern, Pennsylvania. As far as hobbies go I like to ski, play soccer, and read really boring books on political theory. After Mason I'm hoping to go to graduate school to study public policy. I joined CKI as a freshman having been a member of Key Club in high school. Needless to say it has been a great time ever since. If I had to choose I would say my favorite service project was when we set up fences for the White House Easter Egg Hunt in the pouring rain last year. As service vice president I hope to plan a lot of service projects that will be equally memorable. I'm always open to suggestions for projects so if anyone has any ideas feel free to let me know. I hope that by working together our club will be able to better the community we live in. Hello, My name is Robert Paredes and I am a Patriot. I’m a junior and my major is Sociology. As such I believe community service is essential to a community. Currently one of my priorities is overseeing the budget and finances of the CKI group of GMU as Treasurer. I enjoy my duties because I love the group’s constant participation in community service that helps raise possible revenue to help further their impact in a community. A side fact about me is that I am also an inventor on my spare time.

Hi! I’m Caitlin, your new Editor! I am a sophomore and an International Studies major from New Jersey. I joined CKI this year and my favorite service project so far was Fall for Fairfax because I love helping and playing with kids. I’m addicted to coffee and actively look for things to do to delay from studying. I also love reading, cooking, and taking naps. If anyone has any ideas for the newsletter, please let me know! And I would love it if you sent me articles or pictures to add to it to make it better! 4

Hey GMU CKI’ers, Greetings from your new NoVA LTG, Amsley Pietranton! I am SUPER EXCITED to get to know y’all and work with you over the coming year! One of my goals for the division this year is to have more divisional involvement. I lived in London as a kid! 3. I go to NVCC-Alexandria! 4. I’m Italian & Lebanese on my Dad’s side and Irish on my Mom’s! 5. My Mom is from New England & my Dad is from West Virginia! 6. I played soccer competitively from age 4 until I was 18! 7. Traveling to other countries is a passion of mine and I hope to visit all 7 continents! 8. My favorite author is Luanne Rice as I identify with her stories of Irish-American families set in New England. I later found out she was a relative! 9. I swam competitively and butterfly was my stroke! 10. My Initials are AMP. 11. I started skiing when I was two and a half. 12. My favorite color is PURPLE! 1.

Are you creative, artsy, or into graphic design? I am holding a contest for the design of a division logo. Send me your design by April 22 . I’ll post the entries on our divisional Facebook group and the one with the most likes will win! nd

I cannot wait to see what y’all do this year and you can email me at novaltg@cdcki.org anytime! With CKI Love, Amsley Join the NoVA Division Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.311841864955.45555.196413804955& type=3#!/groups/196277203817836/ 5
