The Georgia Museum of Art, which sits on a dramatic hilltop. is located in a .52,000 square floot,

state-of-the-art

building with l0 galleries, an auditorium, the On Display Cai€. an audio-visual theater, an

art ref'erence library, a studio classroom, a print study room and a museum shop. This

facility furthers

the mission of the Georgia Museum of Art to collect, pfeserve, exhiblt and interpret works

The museum was named the state museunr of art in 1982 by the

University of Georgia, the state and the southeastern region.


Hosting a variety of culturally diverse exhibitions. approxi:narely 20 pcr 1car. the museum draws bolh from its pennan(:nt collection and from other museums and private collections representing all periods of alt history. The museum also publishes award-winring publications and scholarly exhibitior catalogues, whlch are distributed nationally and internationally. The museum's permanent collection of over 7,000 works f'eatures l9th- and 20th-centulir American printings and American and Europcrn prinis and drawings dating f}om the 16th century to the present, and the Samuel H. Kress Studl Collcction of Italian Renaissance Paintings. The Georgia Museum of Art hosls many events, including lectures, lamily days, film screenlngs,

studio art clls>es and concerts.
