Mission The Company of the Redwood Library and Athenæum is an educational and cultural institution that remains true to its 1747 Colonial charter establishing a library for “propagating Virtue, Knowledge and useful Learning.”

Purpose Reflecting its history and traditions, the Redwood Library and Athenæum is a library, a museum, and an historic building. Each of these aspects of its identity is key to the institution’s future, as well as to understanding its past. In order to encourage public access to its buildings, programs, and collections, the Library actively pursues policies and opportunities to increase its presence in the national and international educational and cultural environment by expanding, cataloging, preserving, and disseminating its collections and programs.

The Redwood Library and Athenæum celebrated the 265th anniversary of its Charter on August 24, 2012. From its incorporation in 1747 by a group of 46 colonists to its standing today as the oldest continuously operating lending library in its original building in America, the Redwood remains dedicated to fulfilling its Charter, “having nothing in view but the good of Mankind.”

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

This year the Redwood welcomed Dr. Benedict Leca as Executive Director. He is off to a terrific start, combining his love of eighteenth-century history and culture with a strong curatorial background and a vibrant leadership style. Recent exhibitions and programs included a stunning presentation of maritime history, Marine Paintings by John Mecray, presented in the Van Alen Gallery and shown to full advantage with special lighting by Sandra Liotus Lighting Design, LLC.; a spring History Seminar titled “Clockmaking in Colonial America,” featuring clock experts from Winterthur and the Concord Museum; a standing-room-only series on the history of architectural design by Rhode Island School of Design professor John Tschirch; book talks by authors Peter Kiernan (American Mojo) and Phyllis Levin (John Quincy Adams); and another robust Life of the Mind Salon series. In November, the Redwood awarded the first Abraham Redwood Medal for Contributions to American History and Culture to David McCullough, who spoke on his new book, The Wright Brothers. The award, designed by John Benson and made possible by a gift from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust, was presented in Bazarsky Lecture Hall at Salve Regina University. To honor the occasion, the Redwood mounted a special exhibition on the Lafayette Escadrille, the American aviators who flew with the French during World War I. The exhibition, sponsored by the de Ramel Foundation, remains on display until mid-February in the newly installed Helen Elizabeth Peirce Prince Gallery, donated by the Prince and de Ramel families. Escadrille co-founder Norman Prince was a direct relation of Redwood member and supporter Guillaume de Ramel and his mother, Lisette Prince. The summer Gala, beautifully produced in a stunning tent on the grounds of the Redwood in July, ended with a standing ovation for Michael Feinstein, iconic singer, pianist and Gershwin scholar. Without interruption since 1747 the Redwood Library has dedicated itself to “promote virtue, knowledge and understanding with nothing in mind but the good of mankind,” as Abraham Redwood and the original shareholders intended. They were successful merchants in the fourth largest city in the colonies who put aside their religious differences to build the first public Neo-Classical building in America. Working with Benedict, our strong staff and a dedicated board, we are actively sowing the seeds to secure the Redwood’s financial future and to carry that important message to the generations of the future. With your help, I know we can do it. Sincerely,

Edwin G. Fischer, M.D. President, Board of Directors

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is hard to believe that my first year is fast approaching completion, and I would attribute the speed of time, scary as it is, to nothing other than good things: the warm welcome I have received from all of you and the great pleasure I derive in leading this fabled institution “with nothing in view but the good of mankind.” As I am sure many of you sense, we are on the move: we are expanding and enriching our programming; we will implement an admission fee for adult non-members in 2016; and eventually we will be reconfiguring the Rovensky Room. These changes, I would hasten to add, are being effected deliberately, with a deep respect for tradition. But perhaps most important for you, our treasured patrons, they are being effected to provide you with more—more comfort, more content, more books, and more historical material with which to spark your imagination. Part of the enriched programming I speak of will be in the form of successive exhibitions in the Van Alen and Helen Elizabeth Peirce Prince Galleries. Between now and next summer, you will enjoy presentations of fine printing, aviation history, Newport architecture, marine photography, the history of tennis in Newport, and vintage automotive art. And while the Redwood Library was designed to generate knowledge on any worthwhile subject, we will always retain a special place for the period that conceived it in the first place, colonial America. It is for this reason that the next Redwood History Seminar - on June 3, 2016 - will be devoted to colonial portraiture and feature some of the very best scholars in the world on this important topic. The sum of our activities has really nothing to do with any great vision of mine. Rather, it is merely us, together as a team, fulfilling the prescient and benevolent dream of the genteel Abraham Redwood, a man who understood that the greatest gift we can offer ourselves and our fellow citizens is a cultured life shaped by unceasing intellectual discovery. With many, many thanks for your continued support,

Benedict Leca, Ph.D. Executive Director

Also the best manner of breeding and breaking horses, both for sport and burden. London: Printed for G.S. and Sold by W. Mears, at the Lamb in the Old-Baily, 1732. Richard Bradley’s principal endeavors were in the field of botany, and in 1724 he was named the first professor of botany at the University of Cambridge, which office he held until his death in 1732. Richard Bradley (1688–1732) was the author of the first illustrated book on succulent plants, Historia plantarum succulentarum (1716–1727), and editor of the first British horticultural journal. Richard Butler. An essay concerning blood-letting. Shewing the various effects and peculiar advantages of bleeding in different parts of the human body, particularly in the foot. EXHIBITIONS Van Alen Gallery

Portraits of Interiors: Interior Illustrators in Newport Collections A fascination with artistic portrayals of notable interior spaces enticed guest curator Paul Miller to assemble an outstanding selection of art and furnishings for an exhibition in the Van Alen Gallery, from March 2014 through March 2015. Miller, who is Curator at The

Beaulieu Hall, Residence of Ambassador and Mrs. Wiley T. Buchanan by David Mode Payne, 1982.

Preservation Society of Newport County, borrowed works from several local cultural institutions, as well as from many private individuals for the exhibition. In addition to paintings, Miller gathered drawings, photographs, furniture, and textiles, and created two vignettes of furniture and decorative arts that were depicted in the paintings or inspired by them.

Atlantic by John Mecray

Marine Paintings by John Mecray John Mecray grew up a block from the ocean in Cape May, NJ, and eventually employed his considerable artistic talents to become a highly acclaimed marine artist. An exhibition of his paintings and drawings was shown in the Van Alen Gallery and Rovensky Delivery Room vitrines from March 2015 through October 2015. 8

The presentation was a collaboration between the Redwood Library and IYRS, School of Technology & Trades, which inherited most of the art works from the late Reginald H. Fullerton, Jr., of Watch Hill, RI. It coincided with the Volvo Ocean Race in Newport and delighted members and visitors with its dramatic depictions of historic yacht races.

His Booke: Ownership Marks and Bookplates Exquisite examples of book plates from private collections and the Library’s own Special Collections were on display in the fall and winter of 2014-15. Bookplates are a mark of ownership on a piece of paper affixed to the interior cover or a flyleaf of a book. They are sometimes called “ex libris” from the Latin meaning “from the books of.” From approximately 1450, with the creation of moveable type printing by Johannes Gutenberg, bookplates became popular among wealthy German nobles. The artist Albrecht Dürer is credited with producing the first dated bookplate in 1516. The inspiration for these printed bookplates came from the medieval practice of including a portrait of the owner in the front of Books of Hours (illuminated prayer books). As printed materials became more readily available across the European continent and across class lines, the use of bookplates also spread geographically and socially. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, there was a shift in subject matter and practice in the design of

Rhode Island (LORI) grant program and featured aspects of homes, furnishings, and artisanship from the Newport area. The grant enabled the Redwood to catalog 180 decorative arts serials, and to convert catalog records for books in this category, making them available (by appointment) for members and visitors to view.

bookplates to more pictorial and allegorical designs, reflecting the professions, interests, and lifestyle of the book owners. The earliest documented bookplate in the New World was printed in 1642 by Stephen Daye, a Massachusetts colonist who operated a printing press out of Harvard College. In the Bookplate: Redwood Collection of Book- south, armorial coats of arms plates, a gift of George Henry Corey. were popular, indicating the pride in family lineage. For many northern individuals who had escaped religious or political persecution, symbols of the aristocracy would not have been a popular choice. In spite of the changes in bookplate design over time, its purpose remains the same—showing ownership and pride in the possession of a book.

ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES

In the fiscal year 2014-15, the Redwood Library & Athenæum had great success with programs, events, charitable donations, and planned improvements. • The Original Collection was purchased in 1747 with £500 sterling donated by Abraham Redwood. It consisted of 751 titles, some of which went missing after the Library was used by British forces during the Revolutionary War. The Redwood has worked to purchase replacement copies as they have become available, using funds donated by generous members and supporters for this purpose. Eight replacement copies of volumes long missing from the Original Collection were purchased during the 2014-15 fiscal year, thanks to generous contributions from Angela and Garry Fischer, George G. Herrick, David L. and Leslie Reed, Leslie M. Murtha, Virginia Decker, Dr. Paul Del Guercio, Lisette Prince and Maureen Donnell. • The Hartfield Foundation provided funds to restore the historic iron posts and fence surrounding the Library. • Funding for Children’s Library programming was provided by a grant from the George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Foundation. • Sixteen Life of the Mind Salon programs were featured on Wednesday evenings in the fall and spring, inviting members and visitors to share lively occasions of learning and conversation. • The Donaldson Trust provided a grant to increase the number of fully processed and critically evaluated volumes in the Redwood’s art collection. • A collaboration between the Library and IYRS, School of Technology & Trades, brought the exhibition Marine Paintings by John Mecray to the Redwood in March. The exhibition was underwritten by many generous donors. Edward Kane and Martha Wallace provided the funds to produce a full-color catalog of Mecray’s work.

10

• A Toy Lending Library was created in the Children’s Library, thanks to charitable gifts from the Newport County Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation, the NewportFed Charitable Foundation, and the Ocean State Charities Trust. • Newport: A Lively Experiment 1639-1969, the definitive history of Newport by Rockwell Stensrud, published by the Redwood Library, was reprinted in softcover thanks to a generous gift from Frank and Betsy Ray. • The Redwood “Screen and Discuss” Documentary Film Series presented six films and offered a robust discussion following each viewing. • Weekly and monthly programs, such as “If It’s Tuesday, It Must be Shakespeare” and the Redwood Book Club, continued to draw members and visitors to the Library. • Dr. Orin Grossman, noted Gershwin pianist and scholar, was the featured speaker at the John Quinlan Murphy Summer Lecture. He discussed Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and concluded his talk with a complete solo piano performance of the title piece. • Sixty-five members and visitors attended the fourth annual history seminar, Time Will Tell: Clockmaking in Colonial America, on June 5, 2015. Five experts on clockmaking and horological history spoke in the Harrison Room; a dinner at the New York Yacht Club followed. • Full-color gallery cards were produced for the Terry Reading Room, giving detailed information about the portraits and their artists. • Over 800 3M eBook titles have been made available to Redwood members. • Dozens of generous tribute and memorial gifts were given to the Library to honor the friends and families of the donors.

• Fifty-three periodical subscriptions were donated by members and supporters.

various interests and associations. Matthews was editor of Time magazine from 1949 to1953.

• Three musical performances were held in the Harrison Room: Diego Campagna (classical guitarist), Jim McGrath (guitarist), and the Newport String Project.

• Over 400 linear feet of materials making up the institutional archives of the Redwood Library and Athenæum were surveyed.

• In June, the Redwood hosted a reception for leaders from the “Culture as Catalyst” group, which strives to bring recognition to local cultural resources so that they can be a catalyst for economic development. The group is underwritten by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation. The leaders also participated in a workshop led by organizational management and systems expert Peter Senge. • The Library’s wooden card catalogs were moved from the Rovensky Delivery Room and placed throughout the Perry stacks and the 2005 Addition (to the left of the Circulation Desk) to open up the first floor space. The catalogs identify the volumes that are part of the old Cutter classification collection, which is found in the basement level. One card catalog was left in the Delivery Room as a link to the Redwood’s history. • The Edward Burke Postcard Collection, covering 120 years of Newport and Rhode Island history, was received and processed in October 2014. The cards were numbered and scanned, and are available as part of the Newport Ephemera Collection. • The Library’s expansive collection of Christie’s catalogs has been de-accessioned and re-purposed into a research collection detailing local and regional silver and furniture. This project is still underway, but once finished will be available for researchers with a reference appointment.

• Thanks to a generous grant from the IMLS “Museums for America” program, the Library was able to hire an Inventory Project Assistant to begin cataloging and describing the items in the Redwood’s art collection. • A LORI (Library of Rhode Island) OLIS (Office of Library and Information Services) grant enabled the Redwood to catalog 180 decorative arts serials and to convert catalog records for books in this category. The goal of the project was to improve access to the Library’s print collections as well as to improve internal cataloging and collection management procedures. • Tour Director Elaine Bunnell hosted 29 tour groups during the year. St. Michael’s third graders were thrilled to see a volume eaten by bookworms, even more so than being shown the oldest item in the Library, a 1425 BC papyrus fragment. Seniors from Salve Regina’s Circle of Scholars studying Newport architecture viewed Andrea Palladio’s Architecture in Four Books (1736) and saw the drawing that greatly influenced Peter Harrison’s design of the Redwood. The remaining groups included high school and college classes and professional groups including architects, educators, and bankers. • Most of these activities could not have happened without the help of the Library’s wonderful volunteers. The Library is grateful to all who shared their time and talent throughout the year.

• The 7,000 volumes comprising the private library of T.S. Matthews, which had been in storage since 2012, were sorted, reviewed, and cataloged. The collection, a bequest of this influential editor and author, reflects his

PLANNED GIVING Charles Bird King Society: Planned Giving Newport native and renowned artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862) holds a special place in the Redwood Library’s long list of dedicated supporters. Described by President John Quincy Adams as “an ingenious, thinking man, with a faculty of conversing upon almost any topic,” King lived in New York, London, and Washington, DC, but it was Newport that was dearest to his heart. Over the years, King contributed handsomely to the Library, giving money and books as well as scores of paintings. Upon his death in 1862, he gave the Redwood his own personal library, volumes of bound engravings, a significant sum of money, and 75 additional paintings.

The Redwood is deeply indebted to Charles Bird King and to all those who have helped it thrive for more than two and a half centuries by contributing to the endowment. It is fitting that the Library commends those who have made – or intend to make – such gifts by including them in the Charles Bird King Society. The following donors have honored the Library and helped to sustain its mission with bequests, planned gifts, or gifts to the endowment, thus joining the membership of the Charles Bird King Society. We are extremely grateful for their support.
