The ability to rejuvenate the land is written into our Torah (Leviticus 25), as a practical guide to give our fields a much needed rest from constant activity. The laws of “shmittah” dictate we give our fields that rest every seven years - a sabbatical - as a way to recharge the land. Although it is tough to let the land lie fallow, it clearly benefits crop growth and harvest yields infuture years. As it goes for the land, so it also goes for the soul. I am glad to have the opportunity to take a two and a half month sabbatical, from November 11 thru February 20. As my sabbatical approaches, I am experiencing many conflicting feelings. I feel gratitude to our congregation and our leadership and staff for this opportunity to renew and recharge.  I feel excitement at some of the goals I’ve set for myself: to explore my own spirituality, be with my family, to read, to study, and to travel.  I feel a certain amount of anxiety, because I care deeply about our Temple Sinai community and about each of you.  As much as I want and need this time away, I am honored and blessed to be a part of your lives through simchas and sorrows, and I worry that I may miss being there for one of you in a time of need.  I ask for your understanding in advance if that happens.

WHAT AM I DOING DURING MY SABBATICAL

My sabbatical will take place in two parts. During the months of mid-November-December, I will be traveling with my family to New Zealand and Australia.  This will be precious time to reconnect with my family, who so often share me with you, our beloved congregation.  Of course, this is much more than a family trip. Everyone tells me that the sights and sounds of New Zealand and Australia are beautiful. The word ‘shema’ means ‘listen, discern, understand, absorb, and incorporate.” My sabbatical is about having the opportunity to appreciate a different perspective in another part of God’s creation.  More important, my sabbatical allows me to slow down.  While there are many specific things that I want to see in New Zealand and Australia, one of my goals is to let go of my need to have everything planned and discover God’s creation and spiritual nourishment in the moment.

I will then be back for the second and third weeks in January, before I take the second part of my sabbatical (January 20-February 20). This time will be spent reading, studying, and thinking. There will not be enough hours to to get through my “to read” pile, but I am going to make a valiant effort.  There are also several online learning opportunities that I will be taking to “refill my rabbinic tank.” In the end, I hope that I will return to Miami a better husband and father, a better Jew, and a better rabbi.  - continued

WHO WILL BE LEADING SERVICES?

Cantor Norman will be primarily leading with Rabbi David helping. However, our congregation is rich with talent. So many of you have participated in giving a sermon/d’var Torah, teaching, reading Torah or leading a part of our liturgy.  We would love to have you!  In the next few weeks, we will be setting up an online sign-up. Please share your talents and wisdom with your fellow Sinai partners.   IN CASE OF A LIFE CYCLE EMERGENCY OR FOR OTHER PASTORAL ISSUES

Cantor Norman will be the senior clergy on staff and will coordinate this work. Rabbi David, Rabbi Kingsley, Cantor Shulkes, Rabbi Rothberg, and Rabbi Zarren-Zohar will all be helping with this, as they have in the past. ACCESSIBILITY AND EMAIL

Given that much of my sabbatical will be across the world, I will not be present for any life-cycle events. I will also not be checking email. My assistant, Suzanne Summers, will be the only one with access to my email. She will judiciously forward things that are crucial to an email account that I will try to look at a couple of times a week. During the two weeks that I will be back in January, I will do my best to address anything that has come up, before I take the remainder of my sabbatical.  Otherwise, my away reply will read: I am on sabbatical and not checking this email account until February 20. If this is an emergency, please contact Cantor Norman Cohen Falah (cantor.norman@tsnd.org) or my assistant, Suzanne Summers (suzanne.summers@tsnd.org). SCHEDULING

If you need to try to schedule a meeting with me after my sabbatical, you can contact Suzanne Summers in the front office. She can look in my calendar and tentatively schedule it “to be confirmed” when I return in mid-February.  I will have limited availability during the two weeks that I will be here January 6-19. L’HITRA’OT / SEE YOU AGAIN SOON!

Temple Sinai has an amazing staff. Thank you to Susan Warech, Cantor Norman, Rabbi David, Marjorie Cohn Dolan, Suzanne Summers and Angela Mardy, Sam Williams and the maintenance crew.  I am deeply grateful to our wonderful President, Doris Pienknagura, our Executive Committee and Board of Trustees.  We are gifted with so many people of so many talents.  I look forward to this time away, and I look forward to returning with new energy, vision and enthusiasm. Until February… L’hitra’ot / ‫ להתראות‬/ See you again soon! - Rabbi Alan Litwak

A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Project Up-Start Donations

Dear Partners, Our Welcome Back Shabbat Dinner, the beginning of Religious School and Tikkun Olam with the Milk and Honey project started our Fall season at Temple Sinai. Temperatures are still high, but that does not diminish our activities and community involvement. Inspiring and beautiful High Holy Day Services touched our hearts. Contributions to support Project Up-Start have been overwhelmingly generous and surpassed our expectations. Surplus backpacks will be used to support the “His Home” foster care center that currently houses 72 immigrant teenagers that were separated from their parents at the border crossing. Tikkun Olam is a high priority for us – we cannot fix all hardship in the world but certainly can help alleviate it for some. Our Early Childhood Center started its 2018-2019 academic year with joy and laughter. Our little ones learned about the High Holy Days and are enjoying their English and Spanish classes in preparation for the new Bilingual Program led by Interim Director Marjie Cohn Dolan and our consultant, Dr. Ryan Pontier. Staff and Board of Trustees teams are busy planning and executing many activities in the next two months: Sukkah Sunday, Simchat Torah BBQ, Cu@ shabbat, Eliana Light Musician in Residence, Meet the Author with Martin Fletcher and Book Club. Empty Nesters have plans for a Mystery Train Ride as part of their Fort Myers excursion. Sisterhood Circle has scheduled a Sunday Morning Yoga and Zem3 Clothing and Chanukah Gift Shopping. Your presence will reward all these hard-working groups and bring life to our campus. And speaking of campus – our campus is beautiful but needs upkeep and maintenance. Our Men’s Club has been very active with landscaping, will continue to improve the Nature Trail and plans to fix the empty planter in front of the Temple Office. Finally, we will replace all aged AC units at the Early Childhood Center.

KRISTALLNACHT COMMEMORATION AT TEMPLE SINAI TEMPLE SINAI’S SPECIAL SERVICE IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRAGIC NIGHT THAT FORESHADOWED THE HOLOCAUST AND IN HONOR OF THE GERMAN JEWISH MUSICAL TRADITION

Temple Sinai is proud to announce a unique service which will commemorate the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Instead of the traditional Friday night music, the congregation will become transformed by the 19th Century German music that was enjoyed by Jews in Western Europe and particularly in Germany prior to the Holocaust. The service will be enhanced by the presence of holocaust survivors and a special guest speaker.

“Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.” -Yehuda Bauer

The service will take place on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 6:15 p.m. at Temple Sinai of North Dade, 18801 NE 22 Ave, North Miami Beach, 33180. The public is invited to attend. A dinner, the cost of which is $18 for partners and $25 for non-partners, will follow the service. For reservations to the dinner, please RSVP to Temple Sinai at 305-932-9010.

VOTING & ELECTIONS: JEWISH VALUES RAC.ORG

The Sage Hillel taught "Al tifros min hatzibur, Do not separate yourself from the community" (Pirke Avot 2:5). Moreover, it is our responsibility to play an active role in our community and choosing its leaders. Rabbi Yitzhak taught that "A ruler is not to be appointed unless the community is first consulted" (Babylonian Talmud Berachot 55a). Rabbi Yitzhak further explained that in the Torah, Bezalel could be chosen to build the Tabernacle only with the community's approval. This deeply embedded ethic of political participation has guided Jews to enthusiastically participate in the American electoral process. More than any other segment of the white population, Jews played an active role in the

Indeed, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was partially drafted in the conference room of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, under the aegis of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. Given our historical role in the civil rights struggle, allegations of voter disenfranchisement and evidence of higher numbers of disqualified votes for citizens of color compel us to speak out. It is our duty to ensure that all citizens are afforded the opportunity to vote and have their votes
