COVER STORY

25 HOWIE SEVERINO AT

years

Howie Severino is celebrating his 25th year as a journalist. In his career, he has run the gamut from print to broadcast and now, online journalism. Kapuso Magazine chats with the multi-awarded GMA News and Public Affairs pillar. Kapuso Magazine (KM): What inspired you to become a journalist? Howie Severino (HS): My father is an accomplished writer and diplomat, and both he and my mother, a teacher, encouraged me to read and write for pleasure and achievement. My parents allowed me to subscribe to news magazines even in grade school. Plus, as a kid, I wasn’t great in math :-). There was a whole slew of occupations that were a dead end for me. KM: What have been your biggest challenges as a journalist? HS: Learning to write, interview, voice and (more recently) anchor in Filipino, since I had forgotten how to speak it after spending much of my childhood in the United States. Using Filipino in my profession has made me feel whole. KM: Were there any other professions that you considered pursuing? HS: Law and diplomacy. KM: What made you go into documentary filmmaking? HS: I was a newspaper reporter in my late 20s when a filmmaker friend asked me to write a script for a documentary he was directing. That opened my eyes to a powerful way of telling a story. KM: How do you go about choosing a documentary subject? HS: I gravitate towards what I find interesting, but it also must also be significant to society. It needs to be a fresh angle even on an old topic. It has to be visual, and it has to be do-able, meaning it needs to be within budget and I won’t be killed doing it.

8

KM: Do you have any personal advocacy/ies? What are they? HS: Cycling and sustainable transport. But I advocate through example. KM: Describe yourself off-cam. HS: I love spending time with my family. I love the outdoors, kayaking and cycling. I enjoy looking at art. KM: How did you transition from broadcast journalism to multimedia? HS: I received a surprise opportunity to head multimedia journalism at GMA. I was already an avid online reader and blogger, but I had to cram for my role, which was not just content producer but strategist and manager of a wide assortment of talented people. KM: What are the advantages and disadvantages of online journalism? HS: Main advantage: Anything you do in traditional media you can do online, while there is much you can do online that you can’t do in traditional media. Main disadvantage: Online journalism never stops, it’s 24/7. Errors are magnified online. KM: As head of GMA’s Multimedia Journalism Department, what is your management style? HS: Consultative, mentoring. I may talk too much, but I also try to lead by example. I’m hands-on: I edit and write copy, headlines and captions; do interviews; follow leads and track down stories; take photos. I tweet the news and interact about it on FB. I like to experiment. I love the journalism part of the job, the newsroom vibe when there’s a big story. Trying to make copy and headlines engaging and perfect is an obsessive craft. I’m into that. KM: What is the impact of social media on journalism? HS: Social media has a huge multiplier effect on journalism -- nearly everyone becomes an accessible potential source of information, as well as means of distribution. Feedback is instant and keeps us on our toes. At the same time, the avalanche of information makes the role of journalists as verifiers and contextualizers even more important. Rather than becoming obsolete, we are as essential as ever.

Howie Severino started as a newspaper reporter and magazine writer in 1988, became a co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, established himself as a leading documentary filmmaker, and in 2009 was named Editor in Chief of GMA News Online, GMA Network’s news website. In TV, he was on The Probe Team for four years before joining I-Witness, now one of the longest running public affairs programs in the Philippines. Among his best-known documentaries are his series on Jose Rizal -- as an overseas Pinoy in Europe, as the man smirking in a famous photograph, and as the descendant of an illegitimate family from Biñan. He is also credited with documentaries on Iraq on the eve of the US invasion and the MV Karagatan, the secret sunken ship of the NPA. His documentary about language teaching in schools, Don’t English Me, has been widely shown in classrooms. At the PCIJ, he set up the Center’s Environment Desk, built credentials as a leading environmental journalist, and worked closely with Ramon Magsaysay awardee Sheila Coronel. He still produces environmental documentaries for I-Witness and often appears on television riding his mountain bike. Online, he was the first blogger on GMA’s web platforms. As editor of GMA News Online since 2009, he and his team have pioneered the use of Google maps for disaster coverage, crowd-sourcing for news, and Twitter for breaking news in the Philippines. He graduated from Tufts University in Massachusetts with a History degree, magna cum laude, and received his Master’s degree from Sussex University in England in Environment, Development, and Policy. As a college student in Boston in the early1980s, he got to know then exile Ninoy Aquino. After Aquino’s assassination in 1983, Severino returned home to teach at his alma mater Ateneo High School, and join the anti-Marcos movement. He was arrested on the same day as Lino Brocka and Behn Cervantes, and detained for eight days in Fort Bonifacio, then a dreaded army camp and not yet a high-end real estate development. In a 2009 trust survey conducted by Reader’s Digest magazine, Howie was sixth on a list of most trusted Filipinos. Howie is one of the Philippines’ most awarded journalists.
