Vanessa Safavi

Born in Switzerland, 1 980.

Of Iranian and Swiss descent, Vanessa Safavi is an extensive traveler, using her journeys to get to know different cultures and to investigate concepts of ethnography, alienation and identity. She combines multi-layered cultural and art historical references in the form of objects, materials, and pictures, imbued with connotations of her own multicultural background, her travels and her ethnological research. The installation of taxidermy birds entitled Each Colour is a Gift For You alludes to ideas of exoticism and formal beauty, while, at the same time, their presentation refers to the positions employed by scientific researchers.

Vanessa Safavi uses a range of distinct approaches, media and materials in her practice and has exhibited her work internationally. Previous exhibitions include solo presentations at The Breeder, Athens; Kunsthalle São Paulo; Kunsthalle Basel; Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris; Kunsthaus Glarus; and Pro Helvetia, Cape Town; and group shows at Frieze Art Fair, London; Scaramouche Gallery, New York; Zero gallery, Milan; Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin; and CRAC Alsace, Altkirch. She is represented by Chert, Berlin.
