We built sketchbook out of cardboard and paper, binding the pages together with the coptic stitch method. I decorated the cover and used the book to plan assignments and make collages and drawings. I found it helped me be more creative without the pressure of making a “perfectâ€? ďŹ nished piece.

dea t h For the circle of life assignment I decided to paint a ceramic plate I thrifted. This way I would be giving it a new phase in its life and thus furthering its circle. The colors, from the center to the borders, represent the different colors of the sky during the day: dawn, afternoon, dusk and night.

When researching the dance of death, I found that one of its meanings is that death is the same for both the rich and the poor: death is the ultimate equalizer of people. I wanted to represent this by making a money bill worth one soul, meaning that every soul is worth the same. In the middle, I used a still from Walt Disney’s “Dancing Skeletons” animated film.

I taped black paper to my window and covered the rest with my curtains to make a camara obscura in my room. It was very fun to experiment with a form of photography that doesn’t involve a camera!

o ry t s This was my favorite assignment.

We had to write a story about shoes, but I decided to write multiple “shoe stories�: I would cut shoes from magazines and make up stories about the people that were wearing them.

chaos method In class we learned about different artists’ methods for making art that were not traditional. I picked collage, the cutting and pasting of images from different contexts into a new one, and frottage. I cut pictures from a magazine and rubbed a tree leaf in paint. This work is called “Phoenix”, becase the figure in the middle is emerging from the fire around it.

nstormi i a ng br c on o f t i s o ppo ce pts I worked together with Antoinette to come up with opposite concepts, and in the end we settled on day and night. We wanted to incorporate tarot elements into our work and the symbols attatched to the Sun and Moon cards speciďŹ cally. I chose day and, therefore, decided to represent the sun and the thriving of spring, blue skies, green meadows and owers.

color carpet I chose colors based on the type of contrast I wanted to achieve, painting them on a grid.

I painted each of the fifty tiles with a different color or a different hue of the same color. They were arranged with blank squares between them to make a “Tetris”effect.

r o o m Based of the photography of Jeff Walls, we had to build a model of his “Destroyed Room”. For that I used my sketchbook, propped up and with extra pages on the side to make the room. Then I cut scraps of colorful paper to act as the objects and glued them standing up on the floor of the paper room.

d e c o n s t r u c t i o n

To deconstruct a sheet h off paper, I tore up several sheets of colorful paper at the sime time, so I could sew dierent colored pieces back together. It was time-consuming and meditative. My favorite part are the gaps between the pieces; the sheets were all torn in the same places, but they didn’t match up perfectly.

When you destroy something and put it back together, it will never be the same as before its deconstruction.
