ARCHITECTURAL WORKS http://issuu.com/globozille/docs/works

“THE FOLLOWING IS A SELECTION OF MY ARCHITECTURAL WORKS THAT COVERS A DIVERSE RANGE OF PROJECT TYPES IN ASIA, EUROPE AND IN AFRICA. THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, I HAVE BEEN EXPLORING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOLUTIONS, PURPOSELY AVOIDING ANY SPECIFIC, CONTINUOUS STYLE OR LANGUAGE WITH THE INTENTION OF VENTURING A PARTICULAR SOLUTION GIVEN A PARTICULAR SITE AND PROGRAM, SOMETIMES WITH AN INTENTIONAL NAIVETY AND STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS TO PRODUCE A REACTION. ARCHITECTURE IS A PROCESS OF CONTINUOUS GROWTH AND DISCOVERING DIFFERENT APPROACHES FOR EACH PROJECT.”

MEDIACORP INVITED A GROUP OF LOCAL ARCHITECTS IN A PRIVATE COMPETITION TO DESIGN THEIR NEW HEADQUARTER AT BUONA VISTA MEDIAPOLIS SITE. THE PROPOSED DESIGN CONCEPT WANTED TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE TRADITIONAL TV BROADCASTING, INSTITUTIONAL LOOKING BUILDING AND TO CREATE A WOW FACTOR THAT REFLECTS MEDIACORP’S AMBITION TO ENTER THE 21ST CENTURY WITH A FRESH AND AVANT GARDE OUTLOOK.

FUNAN DIGITAL MALL REDEVELOPMENT SINGAPORE

THE CLIENT AND OWNER OF THE CURRENT FUNAN DIGITAL MALL, CAPITALMALLS, REQUESTED TO COME UP WITH A FRESH NEW DESIGN TO REDEVELOP THE SITE, IN ORDER TO CREATE A MORE PROFITABLE AND ATTRACTIVE MARKET PRODUCT. FUNAN HAS A LONG HISTORY OF BEING ONE OF THE PLACES IN SINGAPORE WHERE YOU COULD BUY ALMOST ALL TYPES OF ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS AT REASONABLE PRICES. THE IDEA OF DEMOLISHING THE CURRENT BUILDING AND CREATING A NEW ONE WAS RATHER CHALLENGING IF CONSIDERING THE AFOREMENTIONED HISTORY. THE CONCEPT IS BASED ON THE IDEA THAT NOWADAYS WE ARE SURROUNDED BY INVISIBLE WAVES THAT CARRY TONS OF DIGITAL INFORMATION AND THOSE INVISIBLE WAVES BECOME NOW VISIBLE IN THE EXPRESSION OF A “DIGITAL CANYON” WHERE ELECTRONIC FANS AND SHOPPERS ARE INDUCED INTO AN ACTIVE AND ENGAGING MULTIMEDIA EXPERIENCE.

2010 BOUTIQUE SHOP

SOME YEARS BACK, THERE WAS A LOCAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR A SPANISH STARTUP FASHION DESIGNER WHO REQUESTED FOR SOME CONCEPT IDEAS FOR HIS FIRST FLAGSHIP SHOP. THE PROPOSED IDEA WAS TO IMAGINE OURSELVES BECOMING AS TINY AS ALICE IN WONDERLAND AFTER EATING A SLICE OF THE SHRINKING CAKE. ONCE BECOMING MICROSCOPICAL, WHAT WOULD BE LIKE TO BE WALKING AMONG THE TEXTILE FABRICS? HUGE, BLOWN UP, TRANSLUCENT “FABRIC FIBRES” SHOWCASE THE FEATURE DESIGNS AND OPAQUE “FIBERS” OPEN UP TO REVEAL INSIDE THE REST OF THE FASHION COLLECTION.

SHOP INTERIOR: THE TRANSLUCENT “FIBERS” TO SHOWCASE THE MAIN FEATURE COLLECTION ARE MADE OF FIBREGLASS. THE OPAQUE “FIBERS” ARE MADE OF WHITE, SOLID SURFACE MATERIAL.

QING GONG REDEVELOPMENT GUANGZHOU

THIS WAS QUITE AN INTERESTING PROJECT THAT I WAS INVOLVED WHILE WORKING AS A DESIGN MANAGER FOR A REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO REDEVELOP AN ENTIRE BLOCK OF EXISTING “TONG LAU” SHOPHOUSES ALONG THE FAMOUS BEIJING ROAD AT GUANGZHOU. INSTEAD OF DEMOLISHING THE OLD SHOPHOUSES, THE CHALLENGING EXERCISE WAS TO PRESERVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE FACADES AND COMBINE THEM AS PART OF A ONE LARGER SHOPPING MALL. THE “TONG LAU” SHOPHOUSES ARE AN ECLECTIC MIX OF LOCAL CHINESE ORNAMENTS AND EUROPEAN NEO-CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE. ANOTHER STRONG, WESTERN ARCHITECTURAL INFLUENCE IN GUANGZHOU IS THE ART-DECO STYLE FOUND IN MANY OF THEIR OLD COLONIAL BUILDINGS THAT WAS USED AS REFERENCE TO RECREATE THE BACKSTREET FACADES. AN ECLECTIC MIX OF PERIODICAL ARCHITECTURAL STYLES PARTICULAR OF THE LOCAL HISTORY WAS ACHIEVED TO ENVELOPE THE ENTIRE RETAIL AND F&B PROGRAM.

GOSAN LIBRARY

THE PROVINCE OF DAEGU IN SOUTH KOREA ORGANIZED AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION TO DESIGN A NEW LIBRARY AT THE CITY OF GOSAN. THE NEW LIBRARY SITE IS LOCATED IN A LUSH GREEN PARK WITH DENSELY POPULATED TREES. THIS SITE CONDITION PROVIDED THE INSPIRATION TO DESIGN THE BUILDING AS A MODERN ABSTRACTION OF A CLUSTER OF TREES. THE PURE FORMS OF THE ELEVATED BOXES ARE THE EXPRESSION OF THE TREE CROWNS AND THE PLAYFULLY PLACED COLUMNS AS AN ANALOGY OF A FOREST.

2011 NEW SMU LIBRARY

THE CLIENT, SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY, ORGANISED A DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THEIR NEW LIBRARY IN HONOUR OF MADAME KWA GEOK CHOO. THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF STACKED PROGRAMS, INTENTIONALLY ROTATED ON EACH FLOOR LEVEL, TO DRAMATICALLY EXPRESS THE REFERENCE OF A “PILE OF BOOKS”. A GENEROUS, SHELTERED LAND OF STAIRS MARKS THE GRAND ENTRY TO THE BUILDING WHICH ALSO SERVES AS A GATHERING PUBLIC SPACE.

MIXED DEVELOPMENTS

2016 VIETNAM MIXED DEVELOPMENT

THIS IS A RECENT PROJECT THAT I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK AS A FREELANCER: THE DEVELOPMENT COMPRISES OF A HOTEL AND OFFICE TOWERS WITH A SHOPPING MALL PODIUM AND BASEMENT CAR PARKS. THE PROPOSED DESIGN ESTABLISHES A CLEAR DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE TWO TOWERS: THE OFFICE TOWER MOSTLY CLAD IN HIGH PERFORMANCE DOUBLE GLAZED CURTAIN WALL AND THE HOTEL TOWER CLAD IN WHITE ALUMINIUM PANELS WITH FEATURE BALCONIES FOR THE ROOMS, THUS BECOMING CLEARLY RECOGNISABLE ELEMENTS IN THE URBANSCAPE. THE RANDOMNESS OF THE OVERALL FACADE DESIGN ARTICULATION IS A RESPONSE AND INTERPRETATION OF THE NEARBY RIVER MOVEMENT AND REFLECTIONS.

THE PROPOSED MIXED DEVELOPMENT IS TO BECOME A REFERENCE POINT FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS LIFESTYLE IN JOHOR.

2010-2011 BIN ASHOUR MIXED DEVELOPMENT

WHILE I WAS WORKING IN LIBYA, I WAS ASKED TO COME UP WITH A MIXED DEVELOPMENT MASTERPLAN IN THE DISTRICT OF BIN ASHOUR, TRIPOLI. BIN ASHOUR IS CONSIDERED AS A PRIME AREA WHERE SEVERAL FOREIGN EMBASSIES AND HIGHER END COMMERCIAL STREETS ARE LOCATED. THE PROPOSED PLANNING AND DESIGN WERE INSPIRED FROM THE COLONIAL, RATIONALIST ARCHITECTURAL STYLE BUILT BY THE ITALIANS IN THE 1920-1940. THE PROPOSED PROGRAM IS COMPOSED OF LOW RISE HOUSING, TWO LEVELS OF COMMERCIAL SPACES FOR SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS SURROUNDING AN INNER SQUARE.

SABHA OLD TOWN REDEVELOPMENT

WHILE I WAS WORKING FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF LIBYA BACK IN THE YEAR 2010, THE AUTHORITIES REQUESTED TO COME UP WITH A REDEVELOPMENT MASTERPLAN FOR THE OLD TOWN AREA OF THE CITY OF SABHA. THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AS THE LOCAL POPULATION GRADUALLY MOVED OUT TO MODERN HOUSING, THE OLD TOWN AREA HAS BEEN LEFT ABANDONED AND THUS A PLAN WAS IN NEED TO IMPROVE THE AREA. THE PROPOSED MASTERPLAN OBJECTIVE WAS TO REHABILITATE AND ENHANCE SELECTED BUILDINGS AND PUBLIC SPACES TO BRING BACK TO LIFE THE OLD TOWN AREA AND TO APPRECIATE ITS HISTORY. BUILDINGS HIGHLIGHTED IN DARK GREY ARE MEANT TO BE REHABILITATED USING LOCAL CONSTRUCTION SKILLS AND MATERIALS. THE YELLOW LINES ARE THE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN ROADS TO BE IMPROVED WITH NEW PAVEMENT AND LIGHTING. A SERIES OF ENHANCED PARKS AND COURTYARDS ARE INTRODUCED.
