WEST DES MOINES — Approximately 449 Iowa high school seniors were recognized by Gov. Terry Branstad for outstanding academic achievement at the Ninth Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition ceremony held May 1, at Hy-Vee Hall, Des Moines. The statewide program is sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Each high school was invited to select the senior student or students, depending on the size of the school, possessing the highest academic ranking based on grade point average for their first seven semesters. Students selected for the award also had the opportunity to recognize their favorite/most influential teacher. Dr. Fenchel has been selected to continue his post-graduate medical training at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minn. In June, he will begin his three-year residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Mayo Clinic/St. Mary’s Hospital.
