Mark’s business another NEIS success story

Florist Allirra Sullivan has increased her expertise since the merger of Cottage Connection and Sunglasses on Kent in Maryborough’s CBD.

Unique shopping experience Shoppers in the Maryborough CBD would have noticed some changes happening at Cottage Connection in Adelaide Street. New owners Darren and Linda Smith have incorporated their Sunglasses on Kent business into the well-established florist to offer a unique shopping experience. While maintaining a highly professional florist shop, Darren and Linda have managed to add even more class with their range of sunglasses and fashion accessories. By Darren Smith. Since 2007 it has been the privilege of Sunglasses on Kent to offer our customers the latest styles in sunglass fashion from big brands such as Oakley, Rayban, Vogue and Maui Jim. After feedback from customers we recognised a demand for high quality leather and fashion handbags and wallets. Our customers were telling us they wanted “something different’’ in fashion accessories that no one else was wearing. It was quite obvious that people wanted quality and style without having to shop out of town. Our range was extended to include a large range of hats and Fascinators for race season. With the recent acquisition of a well-established local florist shop,

we decided to amalgamate both the fashion sunglass and handbag business with Cottage Connection at 197 Adelaide Street, Maryborough (opposite Dimmeys). With over forty years of floral experience, we offer a personalized service that ensures success of your special occassion including Weddings, Anniversarie’s, Formals & Sympathy tributes ect. With a fleet of delivery vehicles covering most areas on the Fraser Coast and Wide Bay, customers can be confident their fresh flower will arrive on time. Mark Wall of Total Removal Services is another NEIS success story. The Hervey Bay father of three was working in furniture remvoval when family circumstances needed him to be close to home. Mark decided to start his own business so he could be close to his wife and kids. The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) is a Federal Government initiative that assists people who are registered with Centrelink, are receiving a benefit and who have a promising business idea, to start their own business. Mark said that with the excellent help from Dawn Jensen at Sarino Russo, he was able to complete the NEIS program and establish Total Removal Services. Matthew on track with Stickit Rural

Matthew Hegge didn’t enjoy school and after drifting around for a while he tried a few different training programs, none of which appealed to him. Matthew’s Job Service Agency, EPIC, in Hervey Bay suggested he do a Certificate 11, Workplace Practices program conducted by Stickit Rural Training. There were many challenges for Matthew during the 10-week program, including organising himself to be punctual for training sessions, learning to participate in a team environment, thinking outside of the square and being organised in his daily routine. An important part of the program was the work experience. Brendan Condon, Principal, Stickit Rural Training, said he was impressed Matthew’s efforts to improve his employment opportunities. With the support of Matthew’s Job Service Agency, EPIC, Stickit Rural Training offered him an

Mix n Match leading to suitable pathways Positive outcomes – it’s as simple as that . . . and that’s what Gail Endres of Fraser Coast TESS had in mind when she designed the Mix n Match program. The 10-week program has a mixture of Engineering and Agriculture with the aim of matching each participant with a suitable career pathway. Gail (pictured) said that by offering each participant a career pathway, the program allowed them to focus on the most suitable industry. “The program gives the participants the opportunity for possible employment pathways into an apprenticeship or traineeship or other employment,’’ she said. There are many pathways in the Engineering and Agriculture Industries and the Mix n Match program will help each participant to identify theirs,’’ Gail said. The program has 14 participants who were recruited and referred by Job Service providers, Sarina Russo, EPIC and Fraser Coast TESS Youth Connections.

Each participant has the opportunity to undertake training and work experience in both industries. The outline of the program is: 3 day Employability & Life Skills reparation program as a pathway into MIX N MATCH’ program Work Safely in the Construction Industry – White Card MIX N MATCH is 10 weeks duration – 5 days per week a combination of 3 days per week at either Fraser Coast TESS Trade Training Centre for Engineering and Fraser

Coast TESS Farm (Mungar Road) for Agriculture; 2 days per week for Work Experience - 5 weeks in the Engineering & Manufacturing industry and 5 weeks in the Agriculture/Rural industry (each student has the opportunity to complete 5 weeks in both industries, a total of 20 days maximum of Work Experience; 3 x Agriculture units of competency and 3 x Engineering units of competency from Certificate II level. Phil has an extensive work history in the Fire, Security and Occupational Health and Safety Industries. Phil also owned his own business at one stage. He attended EPIC as he had required some assistance to get back into the work force. Phil, a very keen Job Seeker, made a concerted effort to find work. With his background in security he decided to sit for his security license to assist him in gaining employment. EPIC Employment supported him with this and paid for the course. Phil passed with flying colours receiving Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for most of the course. Also it was discussed to increase his employment opportunities so he could gain his Driver Authorisation. Again Phil completed this and was ready to go. Phil put in for several security jobs, here in Hervey Bay, on mine sites in QLD and also positions in Victoria. The Employment Advisor at

A job at Hervey Bay Airport is a positive outcome for EPIC job seeker Phil (left) with EPIC consultant Bob.

EPIC received an urgent call from the Hervey Bay Airport looking for Security staff. Phil was on his way to Brisbane when the employer rang and asked if they could interview him the same day. He turned his car around and made the interview on time. Needless to say Phil was the successful applicant and is now a permanent member of MSS Security at the Hervey Bay Airport. Phil said he was very happy and grateful for the assistance his consultants and EPIC Employment provided.

Got some good news? We want to hear from you.

Tracy Christie’s story . . . Tracy has been a long term unemployed mother having last worked in 2009 in a reception position in Hervey Bay. Prior to this role Tracy had casual employment as a cleaner. Due to the length of unemployment. Her confidence was low and she did not have any formal qualifications to enhance her employment prospects. To assist the jobseeker, Sarina Russo Job Access referred Tracy to a computer course to enable her to update her skills with Microsoft packages and the internet. This was confidence-building as well as providing Tracy up to date skills. Tracy then attended a Certificate II in Retail course with Sarina Russo Institute, Hervey Bay in 2012. This course provided knowledge and skills that Tracy did

not have to enable her to move into the retail industry. In March 2013, the manager of Supa IGA, Stocklands, Hervey Bay contacted Sarina Russo Job Access requesting resumes for staff to work at the delicatessen. Tracy was successful in gaining a trial at the store. Although Tracy did not have any recent employment history or experience in this role, the employer was delighted with Tracy’s trial and offered her a position in the store. Tracy commenced employment at Supa IGA on the 9th of April 2013. The employer was required to train Tracy in all aspects of the delicatessen from setting up displays to learning to identify different cuts of meat and other produce for sale. Tracy has excelled in this role and is still currently employed at Supa IGA.

Mark inspiration to his peers Wide Bay TAFE teacher Tanya Watts thinks her student Mark Howden is an inspiration. As a person living with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disabilities, Mark has shown that disability is no barrier to educational success. From his early days enrolling with Wide Bay TAFE into the Certificate III in Community Services Work Mark has not only graduated with his qualification but went on to study Certificate IV in Youth Work. Bolstered by his success and the confidence he gained during his study Mark sought advice from his teachers about pursuing his dream to study at university. The decision to study university did not come easy to him but he forged ahead and applied to Griffith University to complete a Bachelor of Liberal Studies. He is now about to start his first semester of ‘summer school’ in his chosen career path. Tanya says, “We are thrilled for Mark. We know what going to university means to him. Watching him develop and grow as a student has been awe inspiring. “At no point did Mark ever say the words – ‘I’m going to quit’.’’ “The love, support and good advice of family, friends and teachers helped Mark to find strategies required to meet his goals. Mark sometimes approached his goals tentatively but once he found his inner strengths and devised his own strategies for learning there was no stopping him.’’ Tanya said. “We (the teachers) always be-

Students are often surprised at the differences in this style of learning but also by the challenges required to work in a self-directed framework. “We know Marks greatest goal is not just about university and education but to pave the way for others with intellectual disabilities to pursue their dreams of having a successful career. He has always maintained, ‘if I can do it, anyone can’. He is a true role model and a person to admire.”

Show and Shine set to lure hot rodders to Fraser Coast

Adrian Ross from Wide Bay Seedlings explains the business of growing to Globe News Marketing Manager Tony Bonner. The company is a big contributor to the Fraser Coast economy.

Our quiet achievers . . .

Wide Bay Seedlings One of the Fraser Coast’s quiet achievers is in the business of growing. Wide Bay Seedlings, a wholesale nursery to the agricultural industry, distributes vegetable seedlings to farms in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Owners Adrian and Vicki Ross operate in a big way supplying primary producers from their well-established business near Tiaro. “We deal directly with farmers,’’ Adrian said. “We don’t cater to the public or any of the big stores.’’ Adrian said their products included capsicum, zucchini, watermelon, rockmelon and tomatoes. “We are not the biggest wholesaler, but we supply 90 per cent of the country’s watermelon seedlings right up the east coast.’’ He said dependability and timing was the key to the company’s success. “We only grow what farmers order and they expect

delivery to work in with their planting schedule. “We have the ability to ship across Australia within a minimum of time.’’ Adrian and Vicki‘s business is one of the quiet achievers that contribute in a big way to the Fraser Coast economy. The couple spent 25 years farming near Biloela before taking on the challenge of establishing Wide Bay Seedlings off Mungar Road. The company grew 50% each year. The first greenhouse (see picture) was built with the help of some clever people. There are now several growing houses which can store up to seven million seedlings. Adrian said to produce a high quality product and to deliver it on time required good planning and exceptional staff. They employ local people and currently have about 30 staff from Mungar to Bauple. Females play a key role in

making the business work, Adrian said. All key leadership roles bar one are women. “It has turned out that females are more suited to working in our type of business; and I don’t have a problem with that,’’ Adrian said. To maintain the company’s infrastructure there are two full time tradespeople on staff. Adrian says he is a great believer in using local expertise and products. “We buy all our overheads locally where possibly and spend more than $1 million in wages each year,’’ Adrian said. “That all goes back into the Maryborough community.’’ The administration side of the business has been run from the couple’s home since the start; but that is about to change shortly when their purpose-built office opens in the heart of the operation. Business is growing on the Fraser Coast.

Mr Peter Hollier, president of the Conrodders Hot Rod & Customs Hervey Bay, has announced that the Show and Shine extraganzia will be held at the Maryborough Show Grounds on Sunday the 20th April 2014. It will be open to the public from 9.00am. “The Show and Shine is the highlight of the Conrodders North Coast Campout and it is expected to attract over three hunderd Hot Rod and Custom enthusiasts from across Queensland,” Mr Hollier said. “While we are excited about the number of cars that will be attending the Show and Shine the main benefit if running this event

is the fundraising opportunity that will directly benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. “The North Coast Campout is growing each year and constantly generating more visitors to attend as word spreads through the Hot Rodding community of what a great event it is.”

During the Show and Shine there will be a number of displays including the Queensland Emergency Services, food vendors, stalls, jumping castle and trade displays. “This event caters for all ages and is a great day out so come on out and see the cars on display,’’ Mr Hollier said.

Lean on menu at breakfast A Lean Comprehensive Breakfast Clinic will be held in Childers on November 2013. ‘Lean’ is a process that originated from the manufacturing industry, but has now evolved as a method that offers real benefits across a number of industries including finance, construction, mining services and the health sector to name a few. In fact any business that has a process can now benefit from Lean. The clinic will demonstrate the

benefits which result when Lean Principles are applied in the office, in product development and in non-manufacturing processes such as mining. The clinic will be held at the Isis Club, 46 Churchill Street, Childers from 7am to 9.30am. The cost of $35 includes breakfast. Maryborough Student wins university spot Maryborough State High School top Aerospace Studies student, Ming Zhang, has been successful in gaining direct entry into the University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Engineering Course through the Aerospace Gateway Schools Offer Scheme. The school is one of only a few Aerospace Gateway schools in the State and therefore top students can apply for direct entry into various Universities in Queensland including UQ. This benefit is a massive boost for the student as they do not have to wait till January to find out if they have received an offer to go to their selected university and so they can organise accommodation months in advance. University of Queensland only offer twenty five direct entry places per year for all of the Aerospace Gateway schools and the criteria is at least High Achievement (HA) in 5 subjects.

Effective time management is essential for efficient study. No matter how you try to stretch it, there are only ever twenty four hours in a day, and while some people struggle to meet deadlines, others seem to easily manage extra-curricular activities, a social life, part time work, and still hand assignments in on time. Their secret is PLANNING and ORGANISATION. Two tools can help with both. The first is the yearly planner. On this planner it is important to mark assignment draft due dates, assignment due dates, exam dates, holidays and other important events that will take up time. This allows the student to see, at a glance, which deadlines are approaching. The second tool is a weekly timetable. On this, the student may allocate time for activities they need to complete, including study, extra-curricular, work and social commitments, and down time. There are also a number of common routines adopted by students who effectively manage their time. Often these students will: Study the difficult subjects first. Prioritise and re-prioritise the tasks that need to be completed, Mix homework with study or revision, Know when the best time is for them to study, and use it. Make sure they are taking care of themselves, (and do not study when they are tired or hungry). Recognise that they do not need to give the same amount of time to each subject each week, but rather, they can ‘borrow’ and ‘pay back’ the time in various subjects according to assignment and exam schedules. (Although they still give the same amount of time to each subject over the course of the semester.) Allow themselves time to rest and relax so they feel refreshed when it is time to study. Using these time management techniques, it is possible to feel more organised, and therefore less stressed about assignments and exams.

What does the future hold for our school leavers? As the end of school for Year 12 students is fast approaching this can be an exciting yet challenging time of year. Faced with end of year exams, gaining a place in a university of choice or successfully gaining employment is just some of the challenges placed upon them and their guardians. Given the high unemployment rate within the Fraser Coast and the limited opportunities within our local market I felt it imperative to offer a service to our local youth in order to assist them to put their best foot forward in gaining sustainable and long term employment. Long, hard road leads to bright futures

The Foster twins, from Xavier Catholic College: Emily (left) with formal partner Blake, and Janet with formal partner Dominic.

F

or two Xavier Catholic College students the long road to a graduation they never expected to see is finally in sight. On Friday the 15th of November twins Emily and Janet Foster will take their place beside graduating Year 12 students to receive their Queensland Certificate of Education. Janet and Emily’s perseverance, determination and courage has amazed their teachers, family and friends and against all odds. The girls were born as tiny, premature babies with many complications, including intellectual and physical impairments that would be with them for the rest of their lives. Janet, born with a hearing impairment in both

ears, was born with physical impairments to her digestive system which would involve ongoing intervention from medical teams. Emily was born with developmental and physical impairments. Both girls have battled with significant learning delays. “The amazing thing for Emily and Janet is their ability to overcome just about any difficulty to meet their goals,” Learning Support Teacher, Claire Sinclair said. “While all Year 12 students have some form of study to do, these girls will study for hours and hours on end to learn the information they need for their assessment.” In 2011 the difficult decision was made to include Janet and Emily in all mainstream classes with one

subject less than other students to allow for extra study time and a program of work experience. “The original idea was for the girls to complete a modified program but to integrate them into existing classrooms,” Mrs Sinclair said. “But it soon became apparent that the girls were achieving well in all classes and would possibly be able to achieve their QCE.” But it hasn’t all been study, Janet and Emily have participated in a range of extracurricular activities including work experience at Woolworths, Target, IGA and the Xavier Kindergarten. They have also volunteered with St Vincent De Paul and Meals on Wheels. Both are avid dancers and took part in Xavier’s Senior Production in 2012. Janet also rides with Dundowran’s Riding for the Disabled Association and both girls love to write. “The girls will end up with more employability skills than the majority of Year 12s graduating this year;’’ Mrs Sinclair said. “They are confident and employable young women who would make great additions to any business.”

LEFT: Jason and Courtney bid farewell to Jason’s first business venture, Pop-In Teas. RIGHT: Jason in the early days.

Little business- big effort - big difference Jason Loft knew what he wanted to do when he finished Year 12 in 2008. The St Mary’s College student saw the opportunity to open a business, applied for a National Australia Bank Young Entrepreneur’s loan and set up Pop-in Teas in Bazaar Street. His father, local businessman and councillor Chris Loft, said Jason was destined to go into business. “Yes, business is in his DNA,’’ Chris said. “At his recent wedding his brother David reminded us that Jason At age 11 used to sell cold soft drinks on the beach at Agnes Water for a dollar when we were on our family holiday . . . he paid 35 cents a can , so a healthy mark up.’’ Pop-in Teas was the perfect opportunity for Jason to build his experience. It started purely as a tea only shop, selling wholesale and retail, Chris said. “Jason had to keep reinventing his business to stay in business and added coffee, using the great local sexie coffee brand. “He also expanded his food range to supply what the market wanted.’’ Pop-in Teas continued to grow and by August this year Jason had nearly quadrupled the turnover. “It’s a small business success story, Chris said. “Lots of hard work, long hours paying bills and paperwork, paying wages to staff, BAS and tax compliance. “He let the product speak for itself and that’s how his business grew.’’ Jason believes in marketing and enjoyed the success of us-

ing Facebook in the local area. While building the business Jason made time for soccer having captained Doon Villa for a number of years. However, business and soccer had to make room for Courtney, Now it’s just Courtney and a new life. Jason sold Pop-in Teas in August, they got married in September and are now looking for opportunities further afield. They bought a modest mobile home, trailer and two Vespas from the sale of the business and are working their way around Australia, planning to pick up work wherever it lands. Their first stop was the Gold Coast where Courtney picked up work on arrival. Chris said that Jason got a telemarketing job – the first time he has ever worked for a boss. “He appreciates the boss immensely as he knows the dedication it required to run a business.’’ So what does Loft the older think about Jason’s efforts? “As a young person willing to have a go, he has done an incredible job,’’ Chris said. “From leaving school and riding the challenges of establishing a small business in the hospitality industry at such a young age and more than survive he has done very well . “The frustration and challenge of needing to re-invent his business continually to survive and thrive including, dealing with all sorts of authorities and competition and remaining on top of it all, he has done amazingly well . “He will be a great employee wherever he goes as he absolutely appreciates the pain of employing people.’’

I am back living on the Fraser Coast and keen to contribute to this growing region. I have worked at the executive levels of business for over 25 years as CFO and or Director. Apart from high levels of technical expertise I have succeeded in building strong teams and relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. I have contributed greatly in time of strong growth and market decline. Some areas of technical expertise include Finance & Accounting processes, Cash Flow Management, Board reporting & governance, Treasury, Foreign Exchange, Debt structuring, production costing, forecasting and strategic policy development. Recently, I was the CFO for Australia’s largesthightech hydroponic glass house (D’VineRipe) in South Australia. The business has 27 hectares under glass and grows a

variety of tomatoes for the Australian market. The business is considered a manufacturing operation due to the technology and operational control. Previously I was the CFO in a successful, capital intensive large private company Hyne Timber, and prior to this worked in finance roles for a wholesale pumping company and the Qld State Gov.
