I want to extend my sincere thanks for all the donations and time invested in making our group what is today and what it will be moving forward.! ! We have been able to grow our group larger than it has ever been since its creation in 2007 and consequently have raised the most amount of money to date. I have complete faith that our new leaders will take the organization to even greater heights moving forward.! ! There is still much work to be done with our partner organization, but given the strength and nature of the partnership we will continue to alleviate the issues still plaguing the Ugandan community in the coming years with your continued support.! ! - Brad Guillory and Nichole Rosato!

ABOUT US

GlobeMed at Northeastern University  In 2007, 3 students gathered in a coffee shop in Boston to discuss their passion for global health and social justice, they came to the realization that their university had no way of becoming informed about these issues. From this, they formed GlobeMed at Northeastern. In the coming years, the club progressively became a presence on campus and a leader in the activist movements amongst the other clubs on campus. The club went through many hard times, the most important one being the transition from the clubs first partnership, Warmheart Thailand to their current one, Kitovu Mobile in Uganda. However, the club has since thrived eventual raising over 20,000 dollars for 3 different projects throughout 4 years, as well as raising campus awareness through educational events.!

since our founding in september 2007 Â , our chapter has grown from to members.

[KITOVU MOBILE AIDS ORGANIZATION] [WORKS IN MASAKA, UGANDA] POPULATION: 289,000

KEY FACT: Toilet coverage in our partner area remains below 10%! KEY FACT: The operational area is predominantly rural and poor, with high rates of HIV (12%)!

Masaka is the chief town of Masaka District in southern Uganda lying just west of Lake Victoria. For a long time Masaka was the second largest town in all of Uganda. This status was changed after the Uganda-Tanzania war of 1979 and the civil war from 1981-1986. Today, the city is still rife with activity and life boasting three internet cafés. There is a bustling food and manufacturing industry, though most of the inhabitants are cattle and crop farmers.! !

[About Kitovu Mobile AIDS Organization] FOUNDED IN 1987 Kitovu Mobile AIDS Organization (Kitovu Mobile) is a Faith Based Organization under the hospices of the “Registered Trustees of Masaka Diocese”. It was started by the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) in the year 1987 as a response to the HIV and AIDS crisis in Rakai district. The Organization employs a holistic approach to addressing needs of both the infected and affected people within their communities.  The organization’s headquarters are located at the outskirts of Masaka town in Masaka District.  It operates in four Districts of Masaka, Ssembabule, Rakai and Lyantonde. The operational area is predominantly rural and poor, with high rates of HIV and large numbers of people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS who are the beneficiaries. The most vulnerable include PLHA, orphans & other vulnerable children and widows etc. The partnership with GlobeMed began in 2009.!

[Why hygiene ! and sanitation?]! We know that without proper hygiene and sanitation there is no chance for development in troubled areas. The community selects those who will benefit most from the self help groups which is usually comprised of 15-20 of the village’s poorest and least educated women. The women often have to care for multiple children including orphans within the village. The real beneficiaries of these self help groups can then be said to be the children. !

07 TOPICS! globalhealthU was a success this semester and we are continuing to be able to have greatdialogues as time goes on. It was important that we learned about the larger issues surrounding our partner to provide context for what we are doing. A favorite moment was when one of our members who grew up near the area we serve shared his personal story. He told us about how things were very hard growing up in Uganda, and reassured us that pit latrines were an important part of making the peoples lives their better. This was important to hear for our whole group who were energized and moved by his words.!

This year of GlobeMed we have seen a surge of new excited members. This has presented us with a great opportunity to build a real sense of community within our group that wasn't possible in the past. We were able to have several community building events over the semester and members ended up on trips together over the summer.!

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

GLOBEMED AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. ! ! OUR QUESTION: I believe in _______.! ! BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose this simple question because it forces people to look at some of their most fundamental beliefs about not just health, but life as a whole. We hoped it would provide answers that might help refocus every aspect of our groups operations. If your actions are not aligned with your values and beliefs you cannot possibly be on the right path.! ! !

2011 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

2011 DELEGATES: Allie Hillner, Brad Guillory!

“The summit stands as a testament to the solidarity of GlobeMed chapters across the country. It is easy to forget the size of the GlobeMed family and it is always refreshing to see them all under one roof. You sometimes lose sight of the larger picture when you are developing and fundraising for your own project. The summit lets you see the cumulative effect of a dedication to poverty on the whole, and its always sight to behold.”! !

-- Brad Guillory, c/o 2011!

DR. JOIA MUKHERJEE! Chief Medical Officer, ! Partners in Health!

“I joined GlobeMed as a sophomore, in a time of my life when I had very little idea of what career path I wanted to take. As the years have passed, and as I've become continually interested in global health and inequity, GlobeMed has been a great outlet for me as I've worked toward a career in medicine. As a senior, I can now look back at not only what I've given to GlobeMed, but what GlobeMed has given to me--a desire to help those in under-served countries as I continue in my medical career. I cherish each moment that I've spent in this group, and hope to see our Northeastern chapter expand long after I graduate.”! ! – Katie Coleman, c/o 2011!

GlobeMed at Northeastern plans to continue their growth by obtaining more dedicated members throughout the summer and fall. We hope to build on our momentum by focusing on community building in the fall of 2011 to bring our group closer together. We also plan to become a more fully integrated and recognized name on campus with a reputation that matches our accomplishments. In the distant future I can see our chapter set an example of how to function not just for GlobeMed chapters but among all student organizations on campus.!
