The most difficult period was when we were trying to get our jobs. We have had to go through interviews over and over again...

Australia is a young and vibrant country and we engage with the world with positivity, determination and a keen sense of what’s possible. It’s a resolute spirit that goes right through to out approach to teaching and learning - to inspire confidence, create real world skills, and encourage independent thinking, teamwork and leadership.

Why?  Yes, why. During the first month after relocation, this question kept repeating in my mind. You may say this was the only first month, but for a father who carries so many responsibilities; this month was really tough. At this time my three kids enrolled to government primary school on 29 January, followed by Chinese New Year. All the major expenses happened altogether. My wife, a very patient and determined woman, has never given up trying, that admires me.  I have been through many interviews : Fujitsu, Hamilton, Peoplebank, Barlow & Sons and

some others. There was one company that was concerned this was my first year in Australia and if my family will be able to adapt well here or not. Two companies had same question - I am not “experienced enough” in this area ( pardon me, I have been in this field my whole life!!) but there was another who said that I was “over qualified” for the job! In the end, I really did not know what was their benchmark for recruitment. There is one thing I need to highlight here : after I went through the interview with Hamilton, I found that they were are also looking for  internal auditor and my wife has all these credentials. Straight away, she made her first appointment,

and ironically, she got the job and is happily employed in this company till today! Yes, this is her first and the only interview so far in Australia, and she is very happy with it!! Again, why?  In fact, I found that there are plenty of IT related jobs in Adelaide and SA, most of my friends were also working in  SAP, ERP, ICT projects, CRM. From their experiences, some of them can get a decent job easily within 2 weeks (from interview till official report to duty day),

There are sufficient employment in South Australia... some of them even got the offer far before their relocation. My wife and I had spent a lot of energy on job applications, yes we did! But the result was mostly negative. My wife is really super lucky I guess, and lucky me, she was contributing the main income for the family while I was still unemployed. After so many episodes of this, we came to a conclusion- a good interview skill plus some luck is a need to be nail the interview. I have been told by my wife, during her interview she was quite relaxed. The manager asked her some common questions and some bits of personal questions. She has been very honest to him and she even told him she can come for work right after the interview if the company needs her immediately. When they spoke on the issue of salary, she made h e r

calculations thoughtfully  in front of him ( the nature of accountant? ) She has also considered some leisure expenses into the calculation. In comparative to me, I could never do so. Perhaps this is because of my conservative character or I have been trained to be formal and invincible, be a gentleman with good manners in order to create the best impression for the interviewer. So, I have never been relaxed during the interviews! Never! Somehow, I just can’t. But I found that this might be an area where I have to improve as I find that Australians are very different f r o m us Asians. They are more like the “ happy go lucky” type , relaxed, easy going, calm plus a bit cool type of personality. I felt these only after I got my current job so you can count how many “unfortunate” interviews I have went through!  Conclusion - Interview is the key to successfully find a job, especially in Australia!  I have surfed about the “Things that needs to be done for interviews”, these are some simple practice (and added some of my personal opinion):

1. Research - Find out a little bit about the company you want to work for. I found that Australians usually are quite friendly, they care about one’s personal feeling and other non job related matters. Please don’t feel offended if the interviewer is trying to find out a little bit more on your personal life. If you don’t feel comfortable about it, you may show him / her a modest smile. Make note of things you want more information about and ask the employer about them at the end of your interview (it’s always a good idea to have a few questions to ask the employer, anyway!).  2. Practice - It sounds funny – and it looks even funnier – but practicing out loud for your interviews will help you sound more polished and concise and less nervous in the actual interview. Especially our job ( engineer, IT professionals ) usually does not train us to be a great presenter or good speaker. List a few key things you want the employer to know about you, and review common interview questions.  3. Dress to make a good first impression - In an interview, first impressions do matter. The best way to ensure a good first impression is to dress smart. If you are being interviewed for a job in an office, it is usually best to wear a dark-colored, conservative suit (for both men and women, I think this is a very common practice no matter where) 4. Be Conscious of Good Interview Etiquette. This list could go on forever – there is literally an endless array of “dos” and “don’ts” for an interview – and not everyone agrees on every aspect of that list. There are, however, some basic “interview etiquette” tips that are important to remember. Be on time for your interview. This is, perhaps, the most important. Employers expect employees to arrive on time to work. They may see a person who is late to an interview, when he or she is supposed to be showing his or her best side, as someone who will have difficulty arriving on time to work or meeting deadlines if hired. Be aware of your body language. When shaking hands, make sure your grip is firm and confident. Have good posture, but avoid appearing like you’re as stiff as a cardboard cutout. Even the most experienced professionals get nervous in an interview – it’s normal. However, if you appear too nervous, the interviewer might draw the wrong conclusions about your ability to do the job – especially if it involves interacting with people! Conversely, make sure you don’t slouch – this could give the impression that you are lazy or uninterested in the position. Maintain eye contact with your interviewer to convey confidence. When speaking, be polite and professional and avoid using slang and profanities. The more confident and polished you appear the more likely you are to leave the interviewer with a positive impression of you. Keep the interview positive. Avoid making negative remarks about any previous jobs or employers. Also, refrain from complaining about any job-related tasks or responsibilities you were given in a previous position. Employers want to hire someone who is positive, enthusiastic, and able to meet and deal with challenges. GMS is the only agent with a single focus on Australian Migration

5. Be Prepared to Ask the Interviewer Questions. This is where your research comes in. Employers want to know if you’re truly interested in the position. They also want to know that you have all the information you need to make a decision, if offered the job. It isn’t a good idea to turn the tables and “interview” the interviewer, but it is a good idea to go into the interview with a few questions in mind. This is your chance to ask additional questions about the business, the position, the requirements, and the expectations of the person who will fill the position. 6. Follow up with a Thank-You Note. Make sure you let the interviewer know how pleased you were to have the chance to interview with him or her. Immediately after the interview, send the interviewer a thank-you note, thanking him or her for taking time to interview you. This is not only proper etiquette and a common display of appreciation, but it also allows you to reaffirm one or two key points of the interview. It also lets the interviewer know how interested you are in working for the company. Being polite and professional always makes a good impression.

To sum up, most Australian interviewers ( they could be white, Asian, Indian, Japanese whatever...) they are very friendly, easy to talk, willing to share, understanding and not too formal or fierce at all. But again, it really depends on your luck. Finally, I got two offers ( after 3 months of struggling ) - one was located out of the city, 25km away. The other one is in the city but the offered salary is slightly below my expectation. After several discussion with my wife, I decided to take up the employment in the city although the salary was a little below my expectation at that point of time. Over the past one year, my salary has increased to match with the level of my responsibility. I cycle to the office, sometimes I even just spend half an hour to walk to work. On an average, we spent 3 months for job applications. Some of my friends experienced up to 5 months jobless period. Besides the skill during the interview, I believe the interview skill and luck plays a part your determination helps to.

To those who are preparing to embark on this All of this advice comes down to three important journey soon, I wish you the very best of luck and things to remember when you're interviewing: being sincerely hope that my sharing as above will aid you prepared, professional, and polite is the best way to in every` way. make the right impression! For the first two months, I suffered from these repeating interviews but it actually gained me a lot of positive experience and very useful for my coming days. As I’ve mentioned, my wife got the job offer   much quicker than me, so I really can’t say “It’s hard to find a job in Australia.” I didn’t sense any discrimination during the interviews too, unlike opinions from others that were posted in some forums.

My friend Dolly introduced Global Our visa was approved. We made Migration Solutions (GMS) to us. our initial landing to Australia in Me and my wife met with GMS for April 2010. During this trip, we an hour consultation. After meeting basically travelled around SA , up with 2 other agents, we decided checking out the schools for our to go with GMS. children, visiting the immigration department to find out more about settlement information, visiting a few recruitment agency. The trip was fruitful. We came back to Malaysia and decided to make our permanent settlement 1 year later.

We proceeded with the South Australia (SA) State Sponsorship. The state sponsorship took one month which was ahead of SA processing time. We immediately proceeded to lodge our final visa application with Immigration office.

Our three children began their

school. I attended several


interviews and landed with a full time job in April 2011.

My wife decided to take a break to take care of the family. In Malaysia, My wife and I worked to support We were guided through the the family. Here in SA, my income alone is sufficient to support our cost entire application. Subsequently, we of living. Although we do not have were asked to perform the medical a luxurious lifestyle here, but we check up.
